I call it our secret spot because when Lawrence is busy from students moving in or graduation day, it's nearly impossible to find a quiet place to eat. Absolutely terrible customer service. I went in to buy a few simple items and decided to grab a beer. I only had about four things so I decided to self check out line. I rang in my beer and waited for a couple minutes for the self checkout attendant to put in his code to allow me to purchase the beer. Then after waiting I tried to wave him down and calling out to him and he just ignored me. He was helping people that showed up after me and we made eye contact. It's not like he was unable to help because of his age because he was able to for other customers that showed up after me. I ended up not buying anything after about 10 minutes I just left. Very disappointed in the customer service. In the future, I'll just drive farther to a grocery store that is better run. read more

I use the store's home delivery service. For a membership fee of $99 per year, delivery is free for purchases of at least $30. Prior to the pandemic, deliveries were by Hy-Vee employees in Hy-Vee trucks. The online ordering site did not offer the option of adding a tip to the bill. But since the pandemic, they have been using third party delivery services, and you can add a tip to the bill online for the delivery person. I find this new system confusing. If you decide to add a tip, the options on the menu start at 10% and increase from there. Since I do not place orders frequently, the orders often are for around $300. A 10% tip would be $30, which seems excessive, since delivery is supposed to be free. I called the store to ask about the excessively high tip default options. The person who talked with me on the phone said she has worked for the delivery firm, and she also thinks the 10%, 15%, 20%,... options in that menu are excessive. She recommends a tip that would be the same as what you would tip for a pizza delivery. That can be done by overriding the default tip options in the tip menu and typing in your own choice. The delivery person does not shop your order in the store. A store employee does that. The third party delivery service just picks up the bagged groceries in the store and brings them to your house. Since the delivery service is paid by Hy-Vee, I think it is reasonable to provide no tip at all or ignore the default tip amounts on the menu, and add in manually a tip of no more than $2 per bag. Since my $300 deliveries usual consist of about 5 bags, I think a tip of $10 is more than enough. I would have given Hy-Vee five stars, if the tip menu in their online ordering site included more reasonable tip amounts, so I would not have to override the defaults and type in my own choice, or leave the tip menu at no tip. read more

There is an inadequate employee working in the service meat department. When I asked him to weigh a pound of meat he threw the meat on the counter after I told him that he gave me the wrong meat his eyes filled with hatred after which he threw the meat on the counter with more force and then defiantly left. He hates other races it is unacceptable to work with people. I do not recommend this store read more

Popcorn. It all started with popcorn. Somehow a bag of Valley Popcorn cane into my life and it was delicious. When my became empty, I was sad. After a little online research, I discovered that HyVee sold Valley Popcorn. This began my love affair with HyVee. They have delicious produce and it always looks fresh. Nothing is wilted or dingy like in other stores. They have an olive bar with is a personal favorite of mine. In a perfect world, the olive bar would be bigger but that is minor. They also have a terrific meat selection and plenty of pre-seasoned meat dishes. The employees are very helpful and courteous. It's almost creepy they are so nice. They don't roll their eyes and talk down to you. They truly seem eager to help. I have even had some employees go out of their way to help. The store is well lit, clean, comfortably arranged and prices are comparable to similar stores. They also have Aisles Online which I have used a great deal. I order groceries online and pick them up at the store. This is very convenient for my whack schedule. My Wish List for HyVee is for a larger olive and a different fuel savers program. Dillons program. is much better because you are rewarded for how much you spend. Still an awesome store. They have stronger plastic bags, too. Lol. read more

This update is not about the whole entire Hy-Vee store. I have no other complaints with any other area of the store except the bakery. Although you are drawn in by the different cakes, breads, muffins, and assortments of sweets the taste is what matters at the end of the day. Today I stopped in and ordered one big cupcake and three little ones. They were decorated so cute that I seriously was looking forward to taking a big bite. Got home and couldn't believe what I had spent my money on. The big cupcake was a salted caramel cupcake. The three little ones were a red velvet, peanut butter, and raspberry. I bit into all of them and was so disappointed that I wound up throwing them all away. They were extremely dry and very dense. The toppings were so sweet that I couldn't even finish them. I guess what the real question is regarding this particular bakery is the true nature of the people who work there. Are they bakers or people who were just hired to bake? Trust me there is a difference and you can definitely taste it in those cupcakes. I will not be back to the bakery for anything else read more

Update: breakfast is delicious when you order off the menu. They let me sub hashbrowns for eggs and the pancakes are huge. Buffet is still lacking though. It was low on stock and looked stale at 10 on a Sunday. I do like the value of the regular menu though. Original: I wish you could rate the restaurant part separately from the store. I still want to give the store 5 stars but we had a terrible experience at the breakfast buffet yesterday and I would give it 2 stars. So I'm going to downgrade my 5 star rating to a 4. It was a Sunday and we went for the breakfast buffet. It was 10:30 and the food was all stale. They got a rush of people at about 10 to 11. They hadn't updated the food while we were there sitting and talking for about an hour so all those people got stale food too. The ice machine was broken and they were getting ice to refill an ice bucket. I don't know where they had to go to get the ice because we left before it was refilled and it took them at least over 20 minutes. People were waiting. Me and my friends walked in the store like any other person. We walked Towards the back where the make up was at and grab three items pacifically an elf primer in a setting spray and my foundation right? We are walking around getting food for breakfast since it's 8am then we get soda coke and cereal and a meat item. That's all by the way this was my first time at this store anyways we are walking around like normal people but at the beginning everyone greeted us like normal people but until EVERYBODY aka the workers and the manager saying hi asking if we need help with anything we said no thank right. Then 10 minutes go by me and my friends are about to pay but we didn't feel like spending 20$ on makeup so we put it back in a random place we're the drinks we're. I know it was wrong for us to put it there but we were on the whole other side of the store. Then me and my friends go back about to pay then the manager asked *where are the other items?* with a attitude and very rude and we kindly said over there by the soda. We showed her and she said "why is this here this isn't right?, where are the other items? Girl we had 3 things nothing else and she basically accused us of stealing. Like ma"am we changed our mind? That's why we put it back. Very rude and she banned us from the store we haven't stole a single thing. This is crazy but the thing is she wanted to pull up surveillance footage of us even tho we did nothing wrong. Followed us as soon as we walked in crazy. This manager is crazy and very rude didn't even let me buy my groceries so she asked us to leave and we left very disappointed of how rude she was to us. I have discovered with this HyVee you really have to watch the prices at the register!! They have items on the shelf that are very clearly marked on sale but when they scan them, they are at full price. I have brought it to their attention a couple of times but they always use excuses stating that just some flavors are on sale, forgot to take down sale tags (even though ad clearly state still on sale) Last week Sun Chips were 2/5.00 all flavors. They were scanned in at 2.99. When I asked, clerk said it was probably certain flavors when sign clearly stated all flavors! WATCH YOUR PRICES!! read more

Good for the basics but promotes obesity. When I fill up my grocery cart it is about 80% raw vegetables, 10% grains (quinoa, barley, etc...), nuts and cereals (fiber one), 7% dairy & dairy like products (yogurt & soy milk), 2% chocolate & 1% meat. This store has a pretty nice bulk purchase section for grains. I love being able to weigh out my food and see what I'm getting. The produce section/selection is pretty nice but the organics are much more expensive than going down Clinton Parkway/23rd and shopping at Natural Grocers. They seem to have all of the major brands of yogurt and soy milk I like and run regular sales on both. Here's the part that makes me a little confused/upset. They have all of these great things at decent prices but they hardly include them in the promotional materials and rarely offer healthy options in their gasoline break ads. You can get 10 cents off per gallon of gas if you purchase 10 frozen pizzas at $1.00 a piece and 2 cents off per gallon if you purchase broccoli. That's just one example of the blatant disregard for the health of their consumers in their ads. If you are a family strapped for cash which sale would you gravitate to for your kids? The fresh vegetables or the frozen pizzas? Change your ads and make your community healthier. Due to the disregard for human health I'm giving you a 2 out of 5. If I were basing this on your prices and availability of goods alone I would give you a 3/4 but your morals seem to be in the wrong place. read more

We just stopped in to shop here today to try out this store. Great selection, staff was friendly and helpful. I want to shop here but we ended up leaving to finish our shopping at Dillons. The overhead announcements every 1-2 minutes advertising sales and thanking me for shopping at Hy-Vee was entirely too loud and unpleasant. This was really disappointing. read more

When i first got to Lawrence I spent several weeks trying to find a nice grocery store. I probably a little more choosy than most when it comes to supermarkets, but it can be difficult to find one that satisfies. The selection at Hy Vee is quite nice. They have a nicely arranged dairy section in the corner that stocks several good brands (including Anderson Erickson -- my personal favorite). Their natural food section isn't too extensive but fills the need. Healthy choices are available for things like breads and tortillas (and others), so I'm able to avoid meals with hydrogenated oils or excessive high fructose corn syrup. The meats have always been good quality, though I haven't tried some of their finer cuts. The produce is rather nice as well; it hasn't bowled me over but it's never disappointed. I've found the prices to be very competitive as well. I haven't compared everything dollar-for-dollar but have been pleased with the general amount I pay for what I get. I was able to get several items for less than the cheapest prices at Wal-Mart stores and the brands are often the same or better. Also, the Hy Vee generic brand is usually quite good so that can save some money without compromising quality. Finally, the shopping experience is the best I've found in Lawrence. The aisles are comfortably wide and seldom crowded, though even when the store is hopping the checkout lines move very quickly. The employees are by and large friendly and helpful. I've tried several other supermarkets around town and this Hy Vee quickly became the one that provided the best value with the greatest ease. Review: 4 stars. read more

The store is very large and they have a good selection in their deli and ready made food area. The store is always clean and has a large variety to choose from. My favorite part of Hy-Vee is the diner/deli. If I'm having problems about what's for dinner the people at the counters are always willing to help me find a great meal already cooked. The meat department had a great selection of fresh cut meats for grilling out on game days. I recommend the pineapple brats. read more

This grocery store has been very disappointing. I have been going between here & Dillons for my groceries for about a year now, and I can honestly say I think I am officially finished with this Hy-Vee. First of all, it took me far longer to get acquainted with the whereabouts of all their products and I've spent more time wandering the aisles numerous times each just to find one thing than I ever have in any other store. I guess it's just the placement of certain things that doesn't make sense here? Second, it doesn't matter if I go at the busiest shopping time on the weekends or the slowest time during a weekday -- literally every single time I go there is a manager over the loud speaker every 4 minutes or so during my trip calling for extra checkout assistance. (She just stands there in front of the check out aisles with her walkie talkie watching the traffic flow & calling for backup every few minutes?! Really that's your job?!) It'd be one thing if the store became swamped unexpectedly and they suddenly needed to call for extra checkers, but I'm talking every. single. time this happens. It's like they are literally never prepared for shoppers, busy or slow, day or night. It makes for an incredibly frustrating shopping experience having to wait in line every time even when it's very slow -- they should have enough checkers ready at all times. It's absurd, and I've never noticed this being an issue at any other grocer I've ever regularly shopped at. My last complaint is that their fuel saver discounts on certain foods throughout the store is very inconsistent. When I first started going here a year ago in the summer, they had a LOT of items with fuel saver points and that was a huge draw for me (free gas?! hell yes!!). But then after about a month it's like it switched and there was almost nothing throughout the store with the points. Ever since, it's been kind of up and down, and it seems the things that do have fuel saver points you have to buy like a bunch of to receive the points. Worth it? Probably not. I usually really love this Hy-Vee but I recently went there and came home with not one but two expired products. The first were crackers that were only a couple days old so it's no big deal. But, then I tried to eat some dried plantains I purchased and they tasted horrible so I checked the date and saw they were 2 months expired. Just be sure to always check the expiration dates on all their products. read more
