Cherries

It was the tail end of the picking season. We were there a few years ago and the cherries were in front of us. No ladder needed. Yesterday we have to use a ladder to get the cherries. Still plenty and sweet though but the ones at the bottom are all gone.

Really great place to go pick cherries! I I've come here for about 4 years in a row. Make sure you check their facebook page to confirm when they open because it varies year to year. You also want to get there early in the day as they get really busy.

Long lines to pay

So we decided to stop by here this weekend since we love cherries. The prices are fair at $4/pound but I was expecting sweeter cherries. You would want to really come here with your kids for the cherry picking experience, not so much for the value. They were firm and crisp, but just not sweet... at least in the area where we went in which is to the left "after you pass the cone" they would tell you as you walk in. We kept trying different cherries on various trees, but still no sweet ones. You'll also notice some cherries that we're either yellow or a green color... don't eat those because they are super tart and you'll just spit them out. So the atmosphere was busy... when you see the lines for those in the payment line, you'll reconsider even going in, but you should. When you approach the entrance booth you'll get a big orange bucket and told where to go when you walk inside. It was just weird when you get to certain areas how families have just laid out blankets and hanging out under the trees inside, but oh well. There were very few ladders available unlike other orchards in the area that have many more ladders to use for customers. This would of helped because if you look, the sweeter and darker cherries are way on top of each tree, which you won't be able to reach and would need a ladder. Some tips... It's very dusty, so don't wear your best shoes or pants if your going somewhere important afterwards. It was sunny, so I would bring some type of headwear. Park wherever you see a spot, because most of the spots closer to the booths will be full. Bring cash, since the cash line is much shorter than the credit/debit line when it's time to pay. There is an ice cream stand near the payment lines, so bring more cash if your bringing kids, because they will want ice cream. And you might want to bring some water if it's a hot day. Although our experience was ok, I would probably want to explore another orchard next time... maybe one in that area that has more fruits to pick or even a fruit stand with local fruit and vegetables. The drive here was ok, but everyone was out... I knew that going in because of the traffic getting here. We still had a good time.

Cherry season! So many red cherries

Cherry season began this weekend, with Chavez and another farm being the earliest to open this season. We went on Sunday @ 8:30 and there were so many cherries on the trees! We didn't even make it past the 6th tree from the beginning of the row! There were that many cherries! Cherries were plump and juicy. Of course, the higher up the tree, the redder and bigger the cherries. Not too sure if this farm allows it, but next time, I plan to bring a step ladder. Another tip, go early. It gets hot in Brentwood. I also notice that u-pick farms tend to get crowded as the morning progresses- so another reason to go early! As far as Covid protocol, masks required. I noticed everyone was respectful, kept their masks on and kept their distance.

I went here with my family this morning and it was a fun trip. Took us roughly 1 hour to get there but it was totally worth it. We had to get up early to get ready and left home around 7:30 am to 8:30 am. There are a couple reasons that we needed to get there early: First of all, to avoid crazy traffic on the way there (you know, this is the cherry season and picking cherries is one of the most popular outdoor activities in this area around this time of the year); Secondly, it is the best time of the day to be under the sun: getting natural vitamin D, cool air ( not too hot when it gets closer to noon time) Finally, the lines for chẹck out is not crazy long when it is the time for us to get ready to go home Here, you can pay by credit card or cash.

$4/LB! It really doesn't get better than that. I went pretty deep and hit the jackpot. The cherries were dark, sweet, and dense ( the best combo!! ) I got 10lb and will be sharing with friends & family. Can't wait to be back before the season comes to an end.

It's cherry picking season 2023. This year the cherry season open late not until the end of May. There are a lot of cherries. My family and I had a good time. We spent nearly two hours at this cherry farm. $4/lb and $32 for a full bucket of cherries.

I was not planning on visiting Chavez U-Pick Cherries, but a last minute option opened up and I headed to Brentwood. Living in Sacramento, the trip is a bit long although nice through the delta. Their location is very large nestled between all the other u pick orchards. Parking is generous, but they fill up fast. The process is pretty simple. Sign a waiver, grab a bag, pick cherries, and pay by the pound. There was a long line to enter and to pay. Facilities are sparse with portable toilets and cash only. Expect sun and dust and bring water! Fortunately the experience is pretty easy. The trees are very accessible with big and juicy cherries at every height for the whole family. They charged $3.50/lb with no parking or entry fees. Contra Costa still has some strict COVID requirements but it's pretty easy in the orchard. It's not worth a trip from Sacramento, but it's a nice trip from the East Bay or Stockton. Highway 4 isn't the best and there isn't much else other than picking cherries. Your local farmers market may be cheaper overall but the experience is worth at least one visit.

Plenty of cheeries.

If you hate the crowd, get here early. Please keep in mind, it's a two lane roadway with traffic light and stop signs. Here is the run down: -$3.50 lb/Cash Only -Huge Parking Lot, fills up fast. -Bucket and bags provided, no charge. -No entry fee. -Only restroom provided is the Honey Bucket. -Cherry is firm, but not as sweet. The red cherry taste sweeter if you can find them. Most are average size, no jumbo size here. -Bring ladder if you want the cherries at the top of the tree, otherwise, not necessary. Very organize for the amount of people on a holiday weekend. Parking and traffic will not be an issue if you get here early.

Marsh Creek Cherries - No ladders needed, yet!

Shout out to my sister for doing the research and doing all the planning when it came down to our trip during Marsh Creek's opening weekend. Located in Brentwood, this U-Pick cherry farm offers a fun experience where you can purchase fresh fruit directly from the source. Staff encourages you to sample from the tree prior to plucking. This joint will set you back $4.50 a pound for u-pick version and they offer pre-picked cherries for $6 a pound. Additional items for sale: a fruit picker stick for $15, Marsh Creek Farm hats for $20, water bottles for $1, & local honey for $18. With our visit occurring during opening weekend, picking the cherries wasn't too bad. There was plenty of reachable fruit for ya girl who is a whopping 5'5. The darker, sweeter options located at the tip top of the trees were only accessible if you had a fruit picker. No ladders were available or seen. 5/5 stars for the memorable family fun. Our party left with 3 [small] buckets of firm, crisp, semi tart, & juicy cherries. I'd come back in a heartbeat but would recommend patrons to use the restroom prior to the trip out- the porta potties provided were horrendously disgusting.

The staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, and resourceful. We had such a great experience that we're already looking forward to coming back next year. Safety Opportunities: While our experience was wonderful, we did notice a few areas for improvement in terms of safety. The pathways leading to the cherry trees could benefit from some maintenance: trimming weeds, filling in potholes, and general upkeep would help prevent potential trip hazards and make the paths safer for families.

(3.5 stars, rounded up to 4)…read more The Urban Edge Farm is well-known for their peach and apricots during the summer time. But who said U-Pick season has to end after the summer? During the fall, they offer other U-Pick fruits, such as pomegranates, persimmons, and kumquats. Last weekend, we decided to try out their persimmon U-Pick. I initially found out about when their persimmon U-Pick would be available through an Instagram comment (there weren't any lnstagram posts or events on their website directly advertising this year's persimmon season), but I also double-checked by calling them the morning of before making the trek to Brentwood. The front of the farm area is a little store front, where you can buy fresh produce that's been harvested directly from the farm. This is also where you weigh your fruits after picking them. After completing the liability form via QR code, they drive you and your guests on a jeep to the fruit trees (and back). During the short drive to the persimmon trees, we also spotted baby cherry trees, a couple of pomegranate trees, and what appeared to be a grapefruit tree. As for the persimmons, there were about 5 Fuyu trees and 2 Hachiya trees. There were plenty of Fuyus available for us to pick. On the other hand, the Hachiya trees were quite bare so we only ended up finding and picking one that was ripe enough. At $4/lb for both varieties of persimmons, we ended up paying around ~$17 for 12 persimmons. The persimmons that were ripe enough to eat were nice and sweet. Getting the U-Pick experience without the summer heat and with reasonable prices was great. The only downside to this experience was the abundance of ants on the trees. The ants got on my hands, clothes, and even my face and the top of my head. The ants didn't appear to affect the quality of the fruit, since they were mainly on the branches and the tops of the persimmon leaves. I wasn't afraid of getting ants on me, but it was starting to get bothersome having to swat the ants away from my body and the persimmons I picked. I thought I had gotten rid of all the ants before leaving and getting into my car, but throughout the ride home, I spotted some straggler ants on my lap and arms, and even on the windshield! So take that into consideration if you're not particularly fond of ants.
