Such a pleasant experience. A family farm, very simple setup. We picked thornless blackberries and cherries. We went on Friday - no crowd at all. They put our blackberries in the cooler since they are so delicate while we went out farther for cherries. Many varieties of cherries, with both mature trees and young, small ones. We picked Rainier, Cassidy, and another variety I can't remember. Corals were in another area, but we had picked so many already, we didn't bother heading over there. But we saw those trees on the way out, and they were mature and FULL of fruit. Plenty of ladders around to reach the high fruit, and PLENTY of delicious cherries on the trees. One of the owners stopped by to point out the best trees to pick from - they were all so friendly and helpful. We brought a few our own containers and they were fine with that. They also used paper bags for the cherries we picked in their bucket - much gentler on the fruit than plastic bags! There are picnic tables in the shade and even a large tortoise outside! I seldom write comments, but due to the hospitality and kindness of the owner of this farm, I would write and give them 5-star. We went with a group of 7 and had very good experience there last Sat. There were tree lined picnic tables (7 or 8) with lots of shad, where we sat and enjoyed our food. We went there for blackberries, but all the ripe berries were picked by visitors on Thur. & Friday before we went. When the owner saw our disappointment, he offered to take us on his tracker car (similar to a gulf car) drive around to a smaller blackberries field next to his own house, I guest that might be their private garden, there were two kinds of blackberry trees. 2 of us went and got 8-lbs of berries in less than 20-minutes. Out of the almost seventy or so you-pick-yourself fruit farms that reside in the Central Valley area of Eastern Contra Costa County, I am so glad we selected Pease Ranch to go to experience my very first cherry picking. It was so clean and organized that half the fun lay in actually being able to climb the sturdy heavy-duty ladders and take in the lush trees for myself. It was a warm day in May when we decided that we wanted to try our hand at cherry picking and we realized that not many places were open during this time, but luckily we called in advance looking for a fun yet affordable place where cherry picking was not only open but easily accessible. Pease Ranch is just one of the many "U-pick," as they call cherry farms in these parts. They were actually hard to find, as there are actually two other U-pick cherry farms on both sides of the property, so finding their sign and small roadway leading to their parking lot was somewhat difficult. Once we did it was easy, as the staff asked how many buckets we wanted, and then we were off to their groves of cherry trees. Despite the small entryway, they actually have a significant amount of cherry trees on their property at Pease Ranch, but once we got our buckets from their outdoor weighing and cashier counter we made a bee line for their main orchard which faced their entrance on Marsh Creek Road. They had plenty of cherry trees waiting to be picked clean and luckily they weren't that packed with guests on the day we went, so as we walked, we noticed there were lots of trees and plenty of huge ladders ready to get to the top of the trees to find the ripest and reddest cherries of them all. As this was my first time, I had to take in everything pretty fast, the trick I learned was not to start filling your bucket with all the cherries you see right off the bat. You have to be thoughtful, as they charge $3.75 per pound, which is on the middle range of costs we learned but still was affordable for me. As you walk, my best recommendation is to walk up and down the rows of trees and look for the trees that have the reddest and ripest cherries growing on top of the trees, not the bottom. In other words, don't go for the lowest hanging fruit, the higher the fruit the closer to picking! And so the multitude of easy of maneuver ladders were in great use today. Also you have to let the cherries fall right off with just using a little tug of your hands. If they don't immediately fall off when you give a little tug, then they are not ready for picking and worth your time. After all was said and done, my bucket was about three fourth's full and as I brought my bucket to their cashier's counter, one person weighed it at about 7 and a half pounds and I was charged 28 dollars total, which was made even better when I learned they accept credit card thanks to having an iPad and square reader. There are honestly so many cherry and stone fruit picking farms to choose from in the local Brentwood area that it can get overwhelming, but we wanted to support a mom and pop place and when we called ahead of time and they said they were open during this time so the choice was easy. They have a small gated area with farm animals for the kids to briefly enjoy once your cherry picking is complete. Our day was over and we had so much in a mere couple of hours, it was a warm day spent on picking fresh fruit and enjoying the great outdoors in a more or less untouched area of the bustling metropolis that makes up the Bay Area, a fun and affordable activity that everyone in our party had fun with! read more

For my special 702nd review (I forgot that I hit 700 reviews), I am going to review this awesome Cherry orchard. Why is it so awesome? Two words. Rainier cherries. While there are a bunch of orchards in the Brentwood area, not all of them carry this variety of cherries. I like all kinds of cherries, but this is hands down my favorite one. The flavor is a little less tart and a little more sweet. Perfect for that afternoon snack instead of eating a bunch of chocolate bars. Well, actually, candy bars are better. But, cherries don't add pounds to the scale. Anyway, just a word to the wise, if you're planning to go cherry picking on a weekend, it's best to go in the early morning on Saturday. It's not like fruit can be expedited to ripen faster. Once the ripe cherries are gone, that's it for a day or two or three. We went on the Memorial Day weekend and left San Jose at 7am to get there at 8. By the time we started driving back at 10:45am, the line was all the way from Brentwood to the 580 (about 12 or 13 miles). As for the actual orchard, it's great. On this particular day, in addition to cherries, they had olallieberries. There weren't a lot of bushes, but there was enough to get a big basket full. We spent the first 30 minutes picking these, but then we saw the cars started to come rolling in, so we hustled to get to the cherry orchard. The orchard was HUGE. They had enough cherries for everyone. And for me, all the Rainier cherries I could eat....... for a week. It came out to about $3 a pound for any variety of cherry. Decent for Bings, but way cheap for Rainier. The service was friendly. They even keep your olallieberries in the fridge when you pick your cherries. Parking was decent, but was on a dirt road. There is no entrance fee, which I believe some orchards will charge. Also, this is NOT one of those orchards where you can eat while you pick. However, a smart consumer will at least try one or two to make sure they're sweet. Just don't tell them I said that. read more

The cherries that you pick per pound is very reasonable and most of the trees are colored coded, especially if you are looking for Rainier cherries. After driving around to sooo many different orchards, we finally found one that still had cherries available! SCORE! FRUITS We only looked at the cherries at this orchard. Rainier and Bing cherries were abundant. Not as big as I'd hoped, but we found a couple trees that still had sweet fruit so we loaded up. My nieces and nephews had fun climbing the trees (but shh...you're not really supposed to do that!) ATMOSPHERE I'm not sure if it's the spacing of the trees or the size of them, but this was a much SHADIER (in a good way) orchard! Compared to Bacchini's, we were melting under the sun but here we were able to find shade easily. PRICE Comparable to other orchards; $2.50/lb. Got a couple lbs of cherries for $5 and they were really yummy after you chill them in the fridge! PARKING There's a guy directing traffic for parking, so it's not a mad house. In order to exit, you have to drive through the edge of the orchard, making it a bumpy but fun ride out. Coming back here next year to load up on cherries! read more

for our annual family cherry picking trip, we ended choosing this place after doing a drive around the area checking out different u-pick farms. It was a weekday and the season just started so the area didn't have the crowd. There was a small parking area, picnic area next to it with sufficient shade. They don't have much of the red cherries although I appreciated the markings on each tree letting us know what type of cherries they have. I saw a few staff just roaming around and they were very nice. the cherries weren't that sweet tho and the trees didn't have much fruits so I wasn't quite happy with the experience. It was fun being with the family tho. read more

My first time ever for any kind of fruit picking. The Bing variety was really sweet and dark red. Most of the fruits were low hanging and hard to miss. I climbed on a ladder only to take a nice picture of myself plucking cherries otherwise most of the fruit was at an arm's reach. I recommend this ranch as they have a picnicking area which most others don't (Trust me I did my research on this), and you definitely want to sit down after the cherry picking activity to bite on the sandwich you carried because there are no restaurants or eateries around! Price of cherries is pretty reasonable for the whole experience ($3.50/pound). They have enough parking too but get there early. We got there at 9 ish and getting a spot wasn't tough but when we left it was really crowded. Also, getting there early is the best strategy for many reasons as the sun isn't too hot and the low hanging fruit is still untouched! The only reason I am giving a 4/5 and not a 5/5 is because of the bathroom situation. They have porta potties like all other farms but they were really dirty and not maintained at all! We got there at 9 am and it din't look as if they were cleaned & kept ready for the Saturday rush. But, otherwise great experience!! read more

**HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED IN THE SERVICE. I would not recommend this place solely based on their customer service. No one comes all the way to Brentwood to pick cherries because you just want to eat cherries, you come for the EXPERIENCE. These cherries were more expensive than the grocery store. We started out the day with parking our car and finding our friends. We had 9 people coming, and went to the counter to ask for several buckets. They made us share buckets because they were running out, understandable. We spend 2 hours picking cherries and finally get to the counter to pay for everything. Being 3 separate households, we wanted to divide the cherries at the counter and pay for whatever we were bringing home individually. There was no one in line behind us, but they MADE US COMBINE OUR CHERRIES AND PAY TOGETHER. Following that, they gave us 1 paper bag for our 7 3/4 lbs of cherries + 2 tiny bags, and REFUSED to give us any more bags or a larger bag. When we approached several different people at the counter to ask for the bags, they were rude about it. I'm a smart girl, I would've understood if they gave us some sort of cost analysis or an explanation of why they couldn't give us more bags. Instead, we got passed around to two other ladies who told each other not to give us any more bags as if we weren't standing right there. The funny thing is that the bags we wanted were given to other people who bought much less than we did, even as the three of us divided our pickings. If I just wanted to eat cherries, I would go to the grocery store. I had a blast with my friends, but NO THANKS to coming here again. You can see that I'm pretty fair with my ratings. There was this old man in his tractor driving around having "conversation" with Asian, Black and Latino families, basically telling them to "behave themselves" with words like "you people". Went cherry picking for the first time and stubble across Pease Ranch. We we're headed to another orchard but the line was long and backed up uthe side of the highway just to get into the parking lot so we thought we'd find a less crowded spot. We got prime pick parking at 11am in the small lot in front. The side sand lot is a long row of cars and would have been a short walk. Large cherries at the top of the trees at both the front and back orchards were sweet and delicious. Our 1 and 3 year old kids had an easy time picking tons of low cherries, although they weren't as big or sweet but still good. read more

The Pease family is very friendly and they have one of the larger u-pick farms in the area so they'll still have cherries when others are out. Pease Ranch is a great place to go cherry picking with the kids. It was our first time here and will definitely come back. I would suggest calling ahead to make sure what their hours of operations are and if there are fruits to pick. We live in the South Bay so wanted to make sure before we drove up. It is very clean, the staff were friendly and parking is right on the farm. They provide the buckets and boxes/bags for your cherries, have a good amount of ladders throughout the orchard, a sink to wash, portable potties and a picnic area. The picnic area is shady with tables and chairs and has a nearby garbage can. You can relax after the hard work and munch on the cherries and have nice lunch there. Our kids had a great time picking cherries, seeing the big tortoise and the pack of roosters and enjoyed their picnic. I highly recommend this place. read more

This is a lovely place to spend a morning/afternoon with your family. I have been coming to this ranch for last few years for cherry picking with my family. The Pease family is very helpful and they have ample of parking and buggies (carts) for transporting you to and from the parking. Also, the cherries here are fabulous. As mentioned in one of the previous reviews, they normally do have cherries when other farms have run out. Many varieties of cherries and very kid friendly too, My kids (4 and 7) have a lovely time here always. They have a small picnic area for the family where you can enjoy your lunch (they don't sell any food - so make sure to pack some of your own). They do accept credit cards but the minimum sale amount has to be $20 (or more). Overall a very nice place. My kids love coming here ! read more

The woman said that she was aware of the complaint but that "it had been a racist and biased complaint" and not to worry. I asked if she could assure us that the old white man on the tractor would not harass my friend and his kid. She said no. I told her they would not be getting our business. We went to DC cherries last year, about a week earlier. We decided to try this place this year. Likes- they have a lot of cherry varieties here (Utah, Cassidy, etc) , and they also have berries for sale- though you better get here early if you want them because they sell out in the first few hours after opening. I also like that they have a place where you can wash your hands by where you check out. Dislikes- maybe it was just the timing, but they ran out of buckets, so we had to wait to get some to use. They had a ton of Rainier cherries and not so many bings. Since bings are the sweetest this was a let down. Also- someone said you don't need a ladder here- that's not true at all- we had to use a ladder for most of our picking. So, comparison to DC Less sweet cherries but they have more trees and their trees have more fruit they have picnic tables but they are crowded- so be sure to being a mat to sit on underneath a tree Bring your own buckets so you don't have to worry about them running out- you can always use them as chairs too Go the weekend before or after Memorial Day- it will be less crowded and you'll get better cherries Like many of the places- cash only and $2 a pound read more

Pease Ranch is a pick your own fruit farm in Brentwood. Came here with my husband and friend to pick blackberries and cherries. It was so much fun! Products: there are several rows of cherry trees with a variety of cherries. There's a map that shows you where to go for specific types of cherries. There are also 2 types of blackberries- freedom and olallie. By this time of year, there wasn't much fruit. I think it was a combination of arriving late to the fruit picking game and not enough water for the fruit because the fruit that was left on the bushes and trees were dehydrated and dry. Experience: tons of fun! Basically, you grab a basket and pick the fruit you want. There were ladders amongst the cherry trees so if you want to pick the fruit at the top, I'd grab one. They're light so you can carry it multiple trees. The blackberry bushes are a bit thorny so be warned. Customer service: there isn't much interaction with staff besides the end when they weigh your fruit. But everyone was really nice! Location: Pease Ranch is on a major thoroughfare with other farms on the street. So if you want to pick fruit, you have many options. They have a big sign so you won't pass the ranch. They have a relatively small parking lot. The first lot when you enter the property is small but near the blackberries so park where you want to pick fruit. I have to say my family and I love this place! Been up here a couple times during the season and each time they had different cherries that were ripe. ^_^ On our last visit, their Cassidy, Bing, and Rainier varieties were ripe for picking. I love Cassidy and Rainieirs!! The cherries are amazingly sweet and huge! The trees are very low with tons of fruit. My two kids have a blast here everytime we come (7yrs old and 1.5 yrs old). The 7 yr old never wants to leave even if we're there for 6 hours. =) They have a nice parking lot, half of the spaces are shaded by trees and the other half exposed to the sun. I think they have about 8 picnic benches there. We usually pack a nice picnic when we go up there. They allow you to picnic in the orchard as well as the picnic site. We would bring our blankets while we are in the orchard. After about 1.5 hours of cherry picking, we would spread out under a tree to rest and enjoy the sun and cherries. We would continue to pick for another hour or so before we finish. We would end up with about 16 pounds of cherries by the end of the day. After we have paid ($2/pound), we would set up our picnic in the picnic area and relax. My daughter loves to look at the chickens when we're there. She would visit them at the beginning and also at the end. ^_^ 4.5 stars rounded up. If they had real bathrooms instead of portable potties, it would be 5 stars. read more

The sweetest white peaches I have ever eaten! I went with a group of friends on June 3 and the trees were full of white peaches. One of the peaches was so soft that when I plucked it from the tree, my nail pierced its skin. They also have delicious honey that you can sample. First time cherry picking and we went to Pease Farm -- had a blast!! They had a good variety of cherries other than Bing and Rainer. From the entrance tent, hang a left and go to the back for the sweetest cherries. They have some shaded picnic tables to bring some lunch! Other than 2 porta potties (that needed a good hosing down) there are no toilet facilities. We paid for a 12 pounds of cherries but upon weighing them \when we got home it only amounted to 10 pounds. And yes, they do "subtract" the weight of the buckets. All in all, the cherries came out to $2.75/pound versus the advertised $2.25. In essence they add a pound per person -- which is probably what we "tasted" anyway while picking fruit! 4 stars for the quality of the cherries and the grounds. 2 stars for the dubious weighing system. I averaged those scores to a 3 star rating. I still think it's a good deal and a fun day. **** For those that are curious -- I weighed the cherries on a kitchen scale and on 2 separate regular scales. My review stands. read more

We returned again this year...only at the beginning of the season this time. Cherries are still $2 a pound this year. A real deal and they don't spray them for pests. I don't normally like to give away my secrets, but frankly the Pease Ranch ROCKS for "you-pick" cherries. I've been there twice this season, due to my tremendous pound-a-day hunger for fresh cherries, and have not been disappointed. In contrast to more-trafficked you-pick cherry places in Brentwood, it's always very pleasant here. There's lots of space and people are relatively few. There are no ridiculous waivers to sign or minimum quantities to buy. Plus they have at least 8 different types of cherries, so you are advised to wander around looking for your favorite -- life is more than Bings and Rainiers. It's simple to do you-pick. Take a bucket from the booth in front (be sure to ask the nice people there what's ripe today and where it's located) and wander into the cherry orchard. This is the point where I get really excited: look, it's CHERRIES, literally growing on trees! Sample various trees to find the cherries that you like. Notice that each tree breed is marked with a different color of paint on the trunk. (Unpainted trunks are Bings.) Remember that oversampling will eventually cause fructose delirium and digestive failure, so pace yourself -- this isn't the Fiber Olympics. Once you find a good tree, cherry-pick it as appropriate to the breed. Ladders are scattered around for you to use. Leave stems on your cherries to keep them fresher longer, but don't break the branches in collecting them! When you're done, just pay for what's in your bucket. Now you can do it too! The price right now is $2 per pound. Sure, you might be able to get them cheaper someplace else, but they were picked by YOU and not an exploited immigrant -- just think how proud Michael Pollan would be. I haven't given you all my secrets about Pease, but this'll get you started. Have fun! read more

Will try that next time ;) Lots of cherries, first time cherry picking so took a while to figure out there were many different varieties, I think only found 4 of the many many varieties. Like the Cassidy! Lots of low branches where the kids had a great time picking with their little buckets- a huge place with abundant clusters on many trees. We asked a employee about where the berries were(few varieties too). He told us where they were, offered a ride in his golf cart, but advised us it wasn't the best pick by the time we got there, and being the weekend (best time to pick cherries during midweek) and the kids would probably not enjoy it too much, so we didn't end up picking berries this trip. Had a good time, not too hot yet, but wind starting to get allergies going, so we headed home. Fun trip, would definitely come again. read more

Didn't get to visit in May 2007, since one direction of Marsh Creek was closed for road improvements, and we didn't want to drive a big loop just to go to this one farm. It was nice that they had a bunch of picnic tables, shaded on-site. We had a picnic here one time. Would have done it again, if the street wasn't partially closed. We'll be back! read more

This place is awesome! Owners are really friendly, their cherry trees were wonderful. So many to pluck from and you couldn't pluck wrong for each tree had sweet cherries for picking. Bings and Rainiers are my favorite and when we came yesterday they were just plump and good for the taking season. Their orchard is huge and I like the fact that you can bring your own lunch and set up a picnic in their picnic area which is cleverly covered by large trees for shade. We will definitely come back!! read more
