There has been alot of fuss over the opening of this "french Canadian" restaurant here in Beaumont. I think the way they financed it certainly merits all the attention they got but that's all. First here it says "french" but all the medias speak of french Canadian...with poutine and tourtière on the menu. I had their poutine and being a real french Canadian I am not too proud to be associated with such a sad poutine. Large beefsteak size potatoes that are mushy inside, a few grains of cheese ( almost could count them on the fingers of one hand) and just a bit of sauce...in fact have way through no cheese nor sauce left in the plate...so dry mushy fries left there...and it was a small plate. Not worth the trip. Makes me wonder if the owners have ever eaten a real poutine in the province of Quebec!!! Hey there is more cheese in the picture below then my son and me had in our two plates!!!! Add to that the fact they have a very limited menu..one page. About 20 selections in all...with a two page drink menu ( yah, I know drinks pay off more) I am sorry to say it is also noisy when there are lots of people! Service is great though... read more

Lovely atmosphere, pleasant staff. Fish and chips was good, though a little more fish would've been nice as it's not an inexpensive meal. I, personally, found the fries cold, but the others with me said theirs were fine. Interesting variety of craft beer!! read more

My wife and I always take her mother to Chartier after we pick her up from the airport, it's become a fun tradition of sorts. Last night the tradition died. We ordered a bottle of wine to celebrate her arrival, they were out of that one, chose another and were told they were out of that one as well. We went with our third choice which was good but still 3rd choice. We ordered the bread appetizer with a selection of two kinds of cheese. The bread was delicious but the "sample" of cheese was exactly that! An embarrassingly small amount of cheese for $5 for each selection. I had the smoked meat sandwich (which was amazing) but the side of french fries was burnt and only contained the tiny bottom of the bag pieces. My wife and her mother split the beet salad appetizer and the orange beets, which was 1/2 the salad, were too salty to eat. They then split the salmon entree which was impossible because it was the smallest entree salmon I've ever seen and to top it all off it was overcooked. The accompanying vegetables were also unseasoned and burnt. We definitely went on a night where the kitchen wasn't prepared to perform. read more

I had dinner at Chartier and was less than impressed and my experience was not like other reviews. The atmosphere was loud and you had to yell to hear the person across from you. It would be better if they didnt play music. The temperature was warm and uncomfortable. The french onion soup was bland and all the other food at the table was not anything special. The food wasnt spiced properly and lacked flavor. A long island ice tea was ordered. It came out clear. It tasted of lemon and sprite.. we werent sure what it was. We drank it anyways. On the bill it was charged as a pop... The waitress did not ask to provide extra hot water for tea or more coffee. You would have to ask her and it took forever to get. The waitress also didnt ask what we wanted to drink when we greeted us she introduced herself and walked away. The decor is nice.. but the food not so much. read more

I will start by saying that a 5 star restaurant to me means it is world class. Maybe I am a huge snob.....whatever. I went to Chartier as part of a party of 7. We had a tasting menu at the chefs table and we were hosted by one of the owners, Darren. The service was very warm and friendly. Darren made everyone feel relaxed. It was more like going to a friends house for dinner. There was perfect balance between being friendly, but with excellent service. The room is super interesting it feels warm and rustic, but still elegant and classy somehow. It gets a little loud. Most people would not notice, but I have trouble hearing when there is a ton of ambient noise. Too many metal concerts in my youth. It seems these days, people love the noise. It is common in many restaurants, it seems and that is ok because it lends to the positive energy of the place. The food. They do homemade bread here and it is amazing! Really! We have seven dishes and all left very full. At the beginning, Darren said, "Tasting menus are usually small portions, but we are not doing that. Tonight, you eat!" Every dish was very good to excellent. Our group was very happy and there were many oooooos and aahhhhs. If I were to critize anything, it would be that many dishes felt very carb-heavy. I love carbs, but it affected the balance a little. Flavours tended towards the sweet side, which is definitely in tune with a lot of places these days. I found the flavours very complex. Perhaps to the point where the main ingredients were overshadowed. Dishes were delicious still - I think if I were ordering one dish, rather than sampling so many, this would be welcome. The only thing our group truly felt was off was the music. It was some sort of odd 90s playlist which did not feel fitting in the surrounding, nor the sophistication of the food. Kind of like nursery rhymes playing at a high school dance. Now that is a pretty minor thing. It was our only complaint and it was not so off putting that it affected our dining experience. There is nothing negative to say about a Chartier experience. The food is always delicious and just a bit unique. The service is impeccable and very genuine. I tend to get side tracked in conversations admiring the decor. I am so proud to be able to boast about this gem right in my own hood! You must go! read more

My meal was alright but made wrong which would normally be fine, the waitress was kind and right away offered something new but seemed scared to have to talk to management for help. It felt uncomfortable and awkward and ultimately it made me feel guilty. It hurt me to personally see someone almost in tears over a small mistake. Might come back for the bread bar but don't think I'd be back to sit down. read more

I would like to precede this review by disclosing that I myself am a cook and have been in restaurants for about 10 years and admittedly can have higher expectations and standards because of this. Love the decor and the atmosphere was nice, warm and inviting. Music was good and at an acceptable level for my personal taste. Our server was pleasant and attentive and despite it being quite busy she provided us with a few tasters of beer throughout the night. They were hosting a large birthday party with children right beside us, which did not detract from our experience either. We started with the steak tartare was good but absolutely too salty, and I love salt so that is saying something. Maybe with the abundance of capers additional seasoning isn't required? Or maybe less capers? Not sure... Otherwise the portion size, other flavours and bread were great. I would order it requesting easy salt next time for sure. The smoked meat sandwich was not awful but a little disappointing overall. We actually both ordered it as we are always big fans of the classic Montreal smoked meat sandwich. It good size for the price for sure in comparison to the rest of menu but the bread to meat ratio was less than desirable. Oh well that's probably what you get for ordering the cheapest dinner menu item. My other complaints were that I wish it was warmed up a bit and also mine was just loaded with the grainy mustard. It filled up all the little (and big) air pockets that the bread had to an almost comical level. I was getting those sensations in my nasal cavity as if I was eating wasabi, to which I am no stranger, but I must say that amount of mustard was unpleasant. My date, however, did not find this was a problem on their sandwich. I would look inside the sandwich and scrape off any excess if I ordered it again. Otherwise the meat itself was very nice, which I believe you can purchase from them to take home, if I interpreted the signage in the foyer correctly. Be advised the sandwich does not come with any sides, which we expected for the price of $13, but just so you know. Because of this we decided to share a 1 lb poutine which was probably the best that I've ever had! Just perfect in every way and I highly recommend it! 2 lb would be good if you weren't planning on eating too many other things. Saw one go out and it was just huge. But yeah... order the poutine. Drinks are good, a little overpriced though, mainly in regards to the beers. For dessert we had the Pouding du Chômeur which was phenomenal, don't let the presentation or terminology of "poor-man's pudding" on the menu fool you. It was an interesting combination of textures and flavors and I REALLY enjoyed it. I want to attempt making it. We also each had a truffle and it was exactly what you would expect. Dense, smooth, rich and chocolaty. Honestly if I was in the area I'd give it another go, mainly because my concerns were minor overall and the poutine and dessert were SO delicious, but I never am in the area unfortunately so driving the 30 min to go back just probably won't happen any time soon. We did have a pleasant date night overall and I applaud the service once again, thank you. read more

We were so disappointed by our meal and experience at Chartier. The striploin was tough and not cooked the way I ordered it. We asked for extra cheese curds on the poutine and that wasn't followed through in the kitchen but they didn't have a problem still charging us for them. My 15 year old grandson accompanied me as he is a poutine lover. It is the best!! I had the French Onion soup plus 1lb of poutine (my grandson had the 2 lb) and couldn't finish it. The soup was excellent! Great service!! I wish the wine list had more on the glass side. Lots of bottled. It is a small restaurant and consequently noisy when busy (which is most of the time). This is our New Most Favorite restaurant . The first thing you notice is the most friendly staff you could ever ask for and then you settle in and take in the surrounding atmosphere which is a very comfortable family dining experience. The food was awesome and the best is they source local,met the Manager Josh and several other staff as well as the kitchen staff and chef and you can really tell they have a true passion for this restaurant and just LOVE working there......This is Truely a Wonderful Dining Experience......Just Hope not to many people read these reviews because we would like to keep this a secret as much as possible Truly Folks go out and enjoy this Jewell and by the way they are talking of adding a bakery because their breads are out of this WorldOh and I forgot how wonderful the Food was as well......truly the best we have had for a long time. read more

Great service from a knowledgeable waitress. Background music was a little loud for our table conversation. My beef bourguignon was served over mashed potatoes which created a very savoury flavour, I think if a crisp fresh side had been added it would have complimented the dish. My husband had the steak and was disappointed at the toughness. We shared a rhubarb strawberry concoction that had good flavour if very runny. The night we went was rainy and gloomy and we were seated in a table away from any light which left us feeling unimpressed. The wall featuring the folks that helped kickstart the restaurant was a great idea. In the end I think savoury and local would best describe the strengths and who can argue with that? read more

Brunch and dinner all in one day. Took my pops for brunch this morning and was blown away with the amazing service, quality and food. Everything was high quality from start to finish. Want some amazing knowledge about your food and amazing personal service? Ask to sit in Samantha's section. She provided such amazing customer service (and sent me home with the dinner menu to drool over) that I went home and convinced my husband to take me back for dinner! Everything we ate was high end and delicious. The scotch egg (holy crap so good) duck and waffles (rich rich deliciousness) poutine (perfection, potatoes could have been cut ever so slightly smaller for a better potato to curds/gravy ratio) beef bourgnion (hubby says DELICIOUS!) and tomato tart (spectacular) all exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to come back and try more things off their menu. Honestly Samantha made our stay so enjoyable. In fact everyone who worked there really made you feel at home and it really seemed like everyone was happy to be at work. Seriously though, Sam - you rock.
