Came here on a Sunday with a group of girls, it was busy and every table was filled. That must be a good sign if its popularity! Finding parking was a bit tough so be prepared to have to drive around a bit or park a little ways away and walk. Single person bathrooms were nice. It took a while for the staff to come take our order but when they did they were great about substitutions and explaining menu items. I ordered the Vegan Bratwurst ($15.95) which comes with tomatoes, eggs, baked beans, Hashbrowns and toast. Upon writing this review I realize I never did get my toast but the portion was still huge and I ended up taking some of it home anyways. The bratwurst was flavourful and cooked well done which I enjoyed, the baked beans were very tomatoey and a nice pairing. I loved having like half a fresh tomato too. At the table the Pulled Pork Eggs Benedict special was a popular order choice and the pulled pork was so flavourful - definitely one I'd come back and order. Also got to taste the breaded pork schnitzel eggs Benedict ($24.95) and the schnitzel was so good! All the portions were huge and a couple of us had our meals boxed up to take home the leftovers. Place was busy 111AM on a Saturday. Had to wait 15min outside. No cover or good place to wait to dress appropriately. Lots of parking nearby you might just have to drive around a little. Took a bit longer than expected to get our order taken and for anyone to check on us once we had our food. We got a jug of water so I never ran out which was nice. Single-person bathrooms available. I tried the Breaded Pork Schnitzel: schnitzel itself was 8/10. But the fact that it came with eggs, hashbrowns, and toast turns out to be a ton of food! "two eggs" - more like 6. There was a ton of scrambled egg and it was cooked perfectly. Hashbrowns were good but glad table had salt and pepper as they tasted completely unseasoned. But they forgot my toast and no one came to check on use until we were 90% done our meal. I did get my toast and it was fresh - comes with only jam and peanut butter as topping options. Boyfriend got the special of the day - pulled pork eggs benny. He was really happy with the flavors and extremely happy with the portions. Could not finish. Sausage was 10/10 good - very peppery. We loved the sauces on the table - boyfriend loved the ?curry ketchup. Very cool you can buy this on the way our as well. Barb and Ernie's Restaurant has been in the same place in Edmonton for a very long time. I could guess at 40 years or so but I'm not certain. It was a full morning until night cafe for most of that time. Originally it was run by Barb and the eclectic Ernie but now his son runs it. The hours were reduced to mornings until 2:00pm so it's a breakfast and lunch place now. In the evening the kitchen is used by Langano Skies Ethiopian restaurant for take out only. That's an interesting arrangement that seems to be working.. But enough history, you want to know how good food is. It's good. We arrived for a late breakfast at around 11:00am on Thursday. There were many choices at medium prices but we ordered from the senior's menu because we only had to be 55 or older. The seniors prices were excellent. I did find it odd that they charge an extra $1:00 for multi grain toast (white bread toast is included for no extra charge) but the meal was still a good deal. We paid $8.95 each plus the extra dollar for the better bread. This gave us one egg, three sausages and lots of hash browns (a fruit bowl is a $3.00 option). What made the meal stand out was the condiments. There was house made mustard for the sausages and house made ketchup for the potatoes. They were delicious. The coffee was restaurant style but perhaps slightly better than average. Service was excellent. I think that our server was the original Ernie's daughter in law but that's just a guess because she talked like an owner. This restaurant might be called the "Old Country Inn" but literally everyone in Edmonton knows it as Barb & Ernie's. Barb and Ernie Feuchter are the original owners of this German-comfort breakfast restaurant, which opened in 1975. Many people (such as myself) have fond memories of crawling in to Barb & Ernie's during the 2000s on weekend mornings after a wild night out on the town. (I was in my 20s, after all!) The best part was always Ernie's signature surly attitude - super sweet to the ladies and quick to dismiss the gents. I would line up all the way outside the door just to get my hands on their smoked salmon eggs benedict - which I believed to be the height of breakfast luxury at the time. This is a great example of what restaurants can do: they create and capture memories. Barb and Ernie officially retired in 2011 and the restaurant was taken over by their son Thomas. Even though the Old Country Inn has been around for 47 years it is still a beloved institution that receives regular accolades. Edmonton Journal named them Best German Restaurant 2020, Best German Restaurant 2021, and Favourite German Restaurant 2022, as well as Best Overall Restaurant 2021. I hadn't visited myself in many, many years and looked forward to a nostalgic return. Said visit took place on a Sunday morning, and not much had changed in the fact that the earlier that you arrive, the better. (Unless waiting in line is your thing.) There is a small parking area in front of the Ritchie establishment but the spots are in high demand. You couldn't possibly miss the restaurant itself - not only is it located in a fairly desolate industrial part of the city but it's kinda hard to ignore an entire two storey Bavarian-style chalet just sitting there on 99th Street. The building is very distinct and a definite focal point of the landscape in the area. Crammed into the small entrance vestibule, I was transported back to age 25 and it was a good feeling. It can be nice when things don't change too much and seem to be just the way that you left them. We arrived not long after opening and there were still vacant tables available. This didn't last for long. However, we were luckily seated right away. The restaurant is somewhat large, comprising of two separate dining rooms with the kitchen sandwiched in between both of them. The inside is very homey and comfortable, much like the food itself. There isn't much flash but you will see paintings of grassy German fields and other scenery, wood paneling on the walls, and the odd beer stein here and there. Seated in the second (or south) dining room by a window, I couldn't help but smile. A sunny classic breakfast just feels right. Barb & Ernie's is only open for breakfast and lunch so you can expect to find a menu that focuses on all of your breakfast favourites with a German twist. You will not find avocado toast on this menu. I decided to order the "fanciest" coffee on the menu, the Mocha (With fresh whipped cream - $4.50). This beverage, while pretty small in size for the price, was a delight. It tasted like coffee and hot chocolate and I was good with that. The whipped cream added a little extra that made the drink feel special. Although the restaurant was busy, our server was very prompt and friendly. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time and as usual, the portions were massive. Barb & Ernie's claim to serve the best eggs benedict, and like I previously mentioned, their smoked salmon version used to be a staple of mine. However, there are SIXTEEN different types available, from meat-centric versions to seafood to vegetarian options. For this visit only one version seemed to be correct: The Old Country Inn Eggs Benedict (Ham, salami, corned beef - $19.95). If something is named after the restaurant itself, the general rule of thumb is that you should order that. All of the eggs benedicts are served with two poached eggs (cooked to order, I requested medium) on an English muffin with homemade white wine hollandaise sauce and hashbrowns. (You can also get tomatoes or baked beans as your side instead.) I have recently come to the realization that fried salami for breakfast is absolutely my jam, so this eggs benedict fit the bill. Heaping with meat (the meat value is certainly good), I dug into this benedict meat mountain. I always remembered the hollandaise to be especially memorable at Barb & Ernie's and was happy to taste it once again. Super creamy, you really get the flavour of the white wine. My eggs were poached to the correct medium doneness. I'm sure that there was an English muffin under there somewhere. The meat was the star of this dish. The ham was good, the corned beef was very tender and felt like a special treat, and the salami was delicious. Cured meats are the best. They have a few different options for their eggs benedict and they usually have a special running (right now it's eggs benny with pulled pork). We enjoyed buffet but during Covid they give you a checklist of what you would like and they bring it to you. They ask if you want seconds or more of anything. This was my first time at Barb & Ernie's for lunch time on a week day. It was busy and we were ask to wait while they set up our table for a big group. In the meantime take advantage and check their huge menu selection (breakfast all day included) also make sure to you are nor parked in the towing zone. The server provided us with water, right after that she took our drink order and orders, the food took a bit to arrive but we were a big a big group after all. The meals were decent portions (I would wanted to be bigger though) and they took a bit of time to refills our beverages. The sausages weren't over cooked and tasted phenomenal- the garlic really stood out which I personally really like. I am glad that we opted for an early breakfast. It started to get busy, that I noticed, around 10:30. There was a line up out the door by the time we were leaving. The parking lot is very tiny. Depending on where you park, the line up out the door can hinder you leaving. Please don't hit the people in line. There is side street parking available too. Barb & Ernie's is one of my favourite brunch spots in Edmonton. It's a great place to bring out-of-town friends when you want to showcase an Edmonton institution. They have a very extensive menu that includes plenty of vegetarian options. This always makes it tough to choose what to eat. I absolutely love their potato pancakes and omelettes but I'm partial to their Eggs Benedict with their super creamy hollandaise sauce. If you get the vegetarian version with tomato, you basically get an entire sliced tomato. Let's just say, the portions are generous. The drink portions are equally large. If you order a mimosa, be prepared for it to be served in a beer stein rather than a champagne glass. That's just how things are done at Barb & Ernies! If you decide to venture out here, be warned: this isn't some secret hole-in-the wall where you'll be seated immediately. Be prepared to wait in line. I promise it will be worth it! read more

A family run German style place specializing in schnitzels and similar, though they have quite a large menu and offer a lot of breakfast options through lunch also (came here with some co-workers who swear by always ordering the eggs benedict). They have a daily special and also keep some German beers on tap - yum. I had the schnitzel special, which turned out to be a pork schnitzel with a mild cheese topping, and you can choose your side - iirc, the options were fries, garlic mash, or spaetzle (fried dumplings). My co-worker who ordered the mash said it was amazing, and I really liked the dumplings. The servings are huge, very few of us could even finish our dishes and had extras left to take away. The schnitzel itself was a little bland, to be honest; seemed like a little more seasoning or at least salt and pepper would have been an improvement. So, not blown away by the schnitzel, although my companions all enjoyed their orders, but there's a ton of other things to try on their extensive menu. And did I mention the menu includes a rather humorous timeline of the business? We had a lot of laughs reading through the ups and downs of Barb & Ernie. I was intrigued with this place every time we drove by, so we stopped in on a rainy Sunday just before noon to giver' a try. There were a lot of people lined up so we had to wait awhile for a table. The food coming out of the kitchen looked pretty good! The decor here is pretty dated and the layout is odd. There are two seating areas with the kitchen between them so you have to go down a long hallway to get to the other dining room. The food storage area appears to be on the other side of one of the dining rooms so staff were constantly traipsing past the seated customers with various food items (a bucket of sliced tomatoes, a loaf of bread etc) to take to the kitchen. We were finally seated and were served very quickly. The breakfast menu is pretty extensive. Lots of choices here. Hubby had bacon and eggs and I opted for eggs benedict with bratwurst, we both had coffee. Our food arrived in record time! The downside to that, was that my food was barely warm. As if almost everything had been prepped ahead of time and then not properly warmed up before being served. My poached egg was perfectly cooked, the hash browns were my favourite kind, and the 2 big bratwurst links were delicious (I wish they would have been hot). The portions were very generous and I could not finish everything on my plate. I appreciated the fact that someone was always cruising around filling up coffee and checking up on us. It should be noted that there are some pretty interesting condiments available. The homemade curry ketchup and mustard were both delicious! This restaurant is quite a popular spot. A favourite of many of my friends this place is almost legend in edmonton. We ordered the wiener schnitzel and shared it. They split our soup in two which was a really nice touch. The sausage soup was exceptional. Really really good. I don't think that I have ever eaten a soup with this much meat in it. Schnitzel was gone in a flash it was so good. I think one serving of food here easily would feed 2 people regular sized meals, the portions are huge. We did not finish everything. We also had a few different salads with our meal, all really tasty. It is nice to see some fresh veg with the meal done in such nice ways. Curry ketchup is homemade and excellent. I decided to try a new breakfast place. I felt like it was average- not the best but not the worst either. The staff were pretty friendly. You can tell that it's family owned. It's a smaller venue however, there are lots of options to choose from food wise. Some of the omelettes were a bit on the pricier end compared to other breakfast places. I have driven by this place many times and have always wanted to try it out. Not only is the building unique, but the parking lot always seems packed. Saturday, my sister and I decided to finally try out Barb and Ernies and let's say we were not disappointed. As it was quite busy, we did have to wait for about 10-15 minutes before being seated, which we both expected seeing as to how busy the parking lot was. Once we were seated, the service was good and quite fast.They had a very good menu with many breakfast options which is always a good sign in my books! Having been to Germany this past summer, I was really craving schnitzel, so I ordered the breaded pork schnitzel with the potato pancakes and eggs. Let's just say that this breakfast did not disappoint. The only thing I can think to mention for those avid tea drinkers is that instead of an actual tea pot they have a small little vase like carafe that always needed refilling. As it holds enough for a cup and a bit, the staff were really good at refilling which was appreciated. We came on a Saturday around noon and it is quite busy but the line moves quite quickly. We were a party of 6, but were sitting within 10 to 15 minutes. There's a main parking lot outside with a lot of street parking as well if you're willing to walk a couple blocks or so. The menu is large with a great deal of variety. Come hungry as the portions are pretty big! I would highly recommend the bratwurst sausages and the potato pancakes! Our friend also tried the German maple bacon pancakes which he consumed entirely! I was not a huge fan of the schnitzel; a touch plain. They also have homemade mustard and homemade ketchup with a bit of a tangy twist! We received generally good service and had plenty of coffee. The food was amazing! I had the apple strudel crepe, with 2 poached eggs and bacon with a side of sausage. The portion size was just right. The side of sausage came with 5, more than i was expecting. The apple strudel filing was huge, the hollandaise sauce was amazing. The last time my family and I decided to visit for lunch, we were served three various salads, which clearly were leftovers from days past, soggy and unappetizing. The soup of the day was nothing more than leftover deconstructed rouladen in broth. The main meal consisted of over salted, soggy Wiener schnitzel, in short, the food is an abomination. The restaurant and building itself saw better days a few decades ago, and the staff was disengaged. If you want actual German food, go to Bauernschmaus or find a time machine to travel back to 1990 to The Gausthaus (The Mill), a true German restaurant. This was the place that taught me that I actually love Eggs Benedict. You see, prior to this, I'd only had BAD Eggs Benedict. You know, the kind of food that is on par with bad airline food (in fact one of the first times I had Eggs Benedict was on an airplane -- bad decision there). In fact, I mostly ignore the rest of their menu because although I love some of the other breakfast items (wait, they sell something other than breakfast here? I don't believe it. Their breakfast is awesome!), their eggs benny is the best bar none of all the eggs benny I've had in years. The only downsides I find for the restaurant are location, being rather busy, and occasionally one other problem. Maybe the location's a good thing for my health (if it were closer, I'd go all the time!). Being busy keeps them in business so that's not too bad (and it's worth the wait even if there IS a line out the door). But the other problem I've had is some discomfort with some of the leering of older men in the establishment. Now sure, I understand that a restaurant of this caliber ought to have some regulars, and some of them might be older men, but it's almost an expected part of the experience as a reasonably young woman to have the occasional inappropriately friendly look and/or comment by the older men who are present. For this reason, I wouldn't go here alone. Instead I go with a group and have a great time. I always have the original eggs Benny but they have many options available My husband always has the pancakes which he says are tasty. He gets the German pancakes. They are thinner than normal ones (almost like crepes but thicker). They also server erdinger German beer which is becoming one of our favourite beers. From Germany of course. I love German food and was looking for a good lunch spot close to work. In the past, I have really good schnitzel here. I decided to just try a basic grilled cheese and I was disappointed. The grilled cheese had about 4 cheese slices on it which was dare I say too much cheese! I also felt that the interior was a bit run down and don't have that welcoming feeling that some old buildings have. Overall sadly this will not be a new frequent lunch spot. read more

Worst eggs benny's I have ever had. Their hollandaise sauce is terrible. All lemon and no salt and they put way too much on my plate. The ham and eggs they used are both of very cheap quality. It's the reformed ham tube and the cheapest runny yellow eggs. The shredded potatoes were undercooked. Bit a decent portion. The service was nice but didnt refill my coffee and I ordered one German bacon pancake and they brought and charged me for a full order. So it was an epic fail on all fronts. Anytime I have friends and family visiting, I always bring them to this place. Barb and erinies has yet to disapoint! My personal favorite is the schnitzel cordon blu, however I warn you, show up with an empty stomach, because you better believe you're getting a full plate! My brother suggested this restaurant for breakfast. We were seated right away. Water and menu were provided shortly after being seated. After we placed our order, the food arrived soon after. I was impressed with the portion size! My bratwurst benny was enough to feed two people. The bratwurst was nicely seasoned. There was ample hollandaise sauce on the soft poached eggs. The hash was pan fried perfectly. The fruit was sweet. I really enjoyed the house made mustard with the bratwurst. Our server refilled coffee frequently and cleared plates once we were finished. The restaurant was clean albeit the decor very dated. The food made up for the ambiance. Overall, it was a very good meal. My only suggestion is that they add a half size option with their breakfast menu for small eaters. read more
