This is one of Edmonton's few patios that doesn't overlook a busy road or parking lot - and also that stays open during the winter, with heaters and/or wood fires! In the middle of the French quarter, they have a little sunken patio so the road is not visible and it's a little oasis of quirky decor and charm. There is a small stage off to one side where live music happens on some summer evenings. There's ample seating indoors as well as outside if the weather isn't cooperative. Menus are in both French and English, and lean towards French style food but with plenty of options from Croque Monsieurs to Poutine. The only reason for 4 stars rather than 5 is I've had some rather mixed experiences with the servers - on my latest visit the server first told me the restaurant was closing shortly (it wasn't; she had mistaken the time), then when I asked her some questions about the tent they were setting up for a special event she said she'd check but then never got back to me; and then after I ordered hot chocolate with oat milk, she brought me hot chocolate with what tasted like real milk. I asked her what brand of oat milk it was since it tasted so good, and she said she'd check. Since I'd also happened to order a vegan entree, I think she completely panicked that she'd served a vegan real milk; we never saw her again, and another waitress finished up our order. Nobody ever did confess I was drinking real milk. Fortunately I am not vegan, just lactose intolerant - but if I'd had some actual allergy that could have been a very serious oversight. We had a good laugh and concluded the first waitress must have been deeply hung over, and that is not a typical experience at this place, so hopefully she has either shaped up or been moved on to somewhere else. read more

Great place to stop while Fringing. I have had mixed thoughts of this place. Previously I felt that the servers were rude. I have been 3 times and we weren't served properly. Either they served us sloppily or one time the server rolled her eyes when I tried to pronounce my dish in French. I didn't feel welcome. I have to say it was a totally different experience and I hope it isn't because that it is because the Fringe is happening and they are having a lot more people. It was a beautiful day and they were serving meals only outside. Beautiful patio and if we would have had live music if we didn't have to dash to a Fringe play. Our server was fantastic. Friendly, helpful, and accomidating. A pleasant surprise from our previous visits. Menu is okay but I think they have too little on there in terms of food. it is shorter because of the Fringe festival, but expanding the menu wouldn't hurt. They only had 9 things to choose from. They do have a really thoughtful beer and wine menu. I decided on the chicken and brie sandwich with fries and my husband went with the cafe bicylette burger. The food came out promptly which was appreciated during a Fringe play. Both handhelds were hardy. My husband loved the amount of meat in his burger and I was surprised on how much chicken was in my sandwich. Both were really flavourful. I particularly loved the mix of the cheese/chicken/fig jam. It was a lovely combination. Fries were good but they were pretty skimpy on them. We could have used a handful more each. Would I run here? No. But on a sunny day during the Fringe it is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine and the atmosphere. read more

Went for the Valentine's Day dinner today for 5 course diner: the main course was unacceptably small and didn't taste very fresh, also the space could benefit from some fresh flowers and music. There were some ornaments on the tables, that looked like Christmas ornaments and no music was playing. Not very inviting atmosphere. People came to celebrate and not to just to eat and go away. The Chef was friendly however his presence felt more like food tasting and there was little to no space to have nice time. It was crowded with servers running around and chef talking. Sorry, I forgot the fancy name for it, but the presentation and taste were fantastic. We also had some dessert. There were only two choices, which was okay, but a few more choices would be nice. The services were okay. It would be 5/5. Unfortunately, the lady that server was foegot our water. They asked us if we wanted water, and we said yes because we were really thirty, water never came until I asked for and as we were almost done our food. When the food came out, we had no napkins nor cutlery. We again had to ask the server. Overall, it was great, I will come back again for more of Joseph's food. Came by for a meeting, and had to wait for my co-attendant, so decided to try their mini coq au vin. The meal came on three sliders for 15 plus tip. I had forgotten to order the gluten free option which is one larger gluten-free bun. The coq au vin came with ample amounts of gravy on three cute little buns. It was tasty, but messy. I was glad I was still alone-not first date fair :). I also ordered a flat white to go as I was uncertain how long I'd be sitting there. Their expresso has overtones of chocolate-not my favourite and still a bit weak for my taste. But the waiting staff was very attentive, unlike my usual experience here. I was asked by three different people, including my server, if I'd been looked after- and I had. The coffee was just over 4 plus tip, but I wouldn't come here just for the coffee. read more

I have finally found the BEST bagel in Edmonton. It's no secret that Montreal bagels are superior to every other bagel out there (sorry, New Yorkers) and I'm so glad to have finally found the legendary St. Viateur bagel here at Cafe Bicyclette. It's just as good as in Montreal! The ambience at this cafe is really nice- reminds me of Europe a lot actually. It doesn't tend to be very loud so it's great for a business lunch or if you urgently need to get some work done. The staff is very welcoming and the menu selection is quite wide. They serve coffee here with a small chocolate which is a nice little touch. While a bit pricey, I think it's worth it to come here to sit down and have a coffee with a friend. Oct 4th ordered a smoked meat sandwich, as a French restaurant I was expecting a Smoked meat that would have ressemble a Montréal SmokeMeat .. far from there.!! Buttered toasts meat that tasted more like honey ham that had been warmed up un a pan with butter.. butter doesn't make everything taste better, disappointing. The waitress taking the order said "what are you taking with that.. I had no interest in anything else but she said it's included.. ok I'll take the garden salad (was really good). Then surprise on the bill extra charges for the salad. During my lunch the waitress went outside pet a large dog.. back inside kept serving without washing her hands and setting up table. I had a friend of mine visiting from Berlin, Germany and wanted to take her to a quaint little cafe in Edmonton. I had heard about this place for years but had never visited. My mistake. Cafe Bicyclette is located in the heart of Edmonton's French Quarter and across the street from the Campus Saint-Jean. It is also a beautiful neighborhood to walk around in the summer. We had only popped into Cafe Bicyclette for a specialty coffee but they offer so much more. Our barista was a pleasant young lady who made our beverages with a smile. My friend is fluent in a number of languages and had a pleasant conversation with her in French while she made our drinks. My friend will be back in the Spring and we have put Cafe Bicyclette on our list to visit again but this time for dinner. Merci read more

The website had profiled a new chef, and we were excited to try out the new menu. My daughter took us here when we visited her. Even before you get inside, you will be drawn in by the outdoor patio with bright, colorful flowers, plus you can't miss the actual bicycle hanging up with flowers decorating it, too. This was my second time trying this out. I really like the set up indoors and outdoors. I had the burger and poutine. I must say that it was probably one of the best burgers I've ever had. It was packed with flavour, juicy, and the bun was soft and fresh. I was starving and by the time I had reached half of my burger, I was already full. It was quite filling especially with the potatoes that came on the side. I quite enjoyed my roasted/pan fried potatoes. I'm not really a roasted potato fan but this was nice. I was a bit thrown off at first when I got them. Their version of potato salad is quite different than most places. It's just roasted potatoes, slightly fried, and coated in a thin layer of gravy. My friend and I shared the poutine. We weren't too crazy about it and felt we had better elsewhere. I will say that they are generous with their cheese curds. On my first visit, I had a salmon sandwich and recall it being really nice. The service was pretty good and the staff were pretty kind and attentive. I would definitely like to come back more often as their menu sounds good. You can find street parking in the vicinity depending on the time of day you arrive. Come here for the best authentic poutine! Poutine Bicyclette features "old school cheesery cheese" curds, homemade gravy and hand cut fries. You know it's legit when the cheese curds are queaky when you chew. This is what I order every time I come here. This cafe/bar/restaurant is located in the French quarter of Edmonton. This is a great place to practice speaking French! The menus are in French, and the staff also speak French. I hear other customers speaking French with each other. It's almost like being in Quebec without having to pay for a trip there! If you aren't confident in your French skills, don't worry, they also speak English here. I haven't been here for an event. Cafe bicyclette open for business! Things are starting to slowly open back up again and I was excited to see their updated menu. I love coming to this little place because it has one of the cutest patios in the city. There are tea lights, umbrellas, fresh flowers, couch/pillows area and even some artisticly hung windows. They have done a great job of providing hand sanitizer before you go in as well as giving lots of space between tables and taking extra precautions to make sure we can enjoy a safe restaurant experience. I don't personally speak a lot of French but since Cafe bicyclette is in a French speaking area all the servers are fluent as are many of the patrons. It can be a fun experience in itself to go to a restaurant that is bilingual! I could not help but order the poutine and it did not disappoint. The fries were so crispy and well-seasoned complete with squeaky cheese curds and gravy. I was totally stuffed! The server came to our table so we didn't have to enter the restaurant, we could just stay on the patio enjoying our food and drinks. Another reason that makes this patio Prime real estate is because of the shape of the building around it perfectly shelters it from any wind which makes it so enjoyable on a nice day! read more

Was looking for the best Poutine in the city to experience the authentic taste not just some from a fast food place I can make myself at home. After having my coffee at the Duchess I was set on this place which was highly recommended by the locals in the bakery. This is the next best to the cheese factory and close to where I was spending the afternoon. Upon walking in I was greeted in french by a wonderful woman. She was super friendly. I ordered the poutine and a cappuccino. Both were very delicious. After seeing it made at the Edmonton Mall food court I was very skeptical but this actually looked so delicious on site. Ordering in French would be fun here if you're just starting out learning French! Their latté was great, as was their breakfast. I had the spinach omelette with feta cheese both days I came here. The first day it was fresh and the spinach was crunch but the second time I came the spinach was soggy. Perhaps just an off day or perhaps a struggle with consistency. The omelette came with a blackened grapefruit on the side, sprinkled in raw sugar. It was a great touch and my first time actually enjoying a grapefruit. The vibe inside the café is very chill. There is just so much charm in this little place. Don't be intimidated you don't have to speak French to eat here. I went with my book club and really enjoyed this cozy French cafe. The menu is in French but there's an English translation in small letters. I should have practised my French while there but I always chicken out. The staff was super nice and they let me have an onion soup for lunch even though it wasn't available on their menu until 5. It was delicious. And of course there's the poutine! Massive portions. This is a lovely, delightful French café located at la Cité Francophone across from the Faculté Saint-Jean. Came here after a visit to the Muttart Conservatory on Canada Day to escape the torrential downpour! And man, was Cafe Bicyclette ever the warm, dry haven we needed that day! Brunch-ing with a friend and her young daughter, we ordered the poutine, the brunch poutine and the (can't remember the exact name) crepe slathered in chocolate and ice cream. We also had a latte, a coffee and a hot chocolate. As should be predicted by the name of the cafe, the French generally always nail their espresso-based coffee. The latte was thick and creamy, the coffee nice and strong! The hot chocolate was the same size as the latte, so for those ordering for kids, watch out! The sugar high is real. Watching an 8 year old power through a chocolate mess of a crepe while pounding hot chocolate was certainly a demonstration that one can never have too much chocolate. Again, the crepe was an adult-sized portion... The poutine vs brunch poutine, however, was an insanely different story. The brunch poutine could probably feed three people easily (but comes with the fried egg, which is what sold me), whereas the regular poutine (equally delicious) was a more rational portion for one adult. I would 100% recommend either of these poutines because, again, the French/Quebecois truly nail what they know best with proper cheese curds and a marvelous gravy! At Cafe Bicyclette, you order at the counter and they serve you your food. The baristas/waiters speak both English and French, although many of the clientele were speaking French around us. Not sure if they are under new management but the staff here are incredibly rude and need to be retrained. Food and coffee is actually good but wow there is some serious tone and customer service lacking. I ordered a sandwich and wanted to swap the fries for a salad and the waiter said no problem but then some random lady comes up to us (VERY rude) and tell us that we have to pay for the fries and the salad. I love Cafe Bicyclette! Their menu is superb. I usually go for their Poutine, because it tastes like Poutine I've had in Montreal. The cheese is fresh and squeaky, and it's the only place in the city that I've been able to find St. Viateur Bagels for sale. (And once you've had a St. Viateur Bagel, there's no going back!!). I had wanted to visit this Cafe for months and when I got off work early Friday afternoon, I figured it was the perfect time to drop in. First impressions were great - I loved the decor and the atmosphere. There was ample seating inside the bright and airy cafe. I chose to sit outside as it was the first lovely day of summer and they had almost a dozen tables outside to pick from. I understand they have a great menu but I just had a chai latte. My personal favorite are the croissants with egg and avocado, but they always change the options available. You can get the breakfast sandwiches on bagels, baguettes, or croissants, and there's usually ham or bacon, and veggie options. And the lattes are always delicious. They have a gorgeous patio with a wood burning fireplace kept on throughout the winter months. There are blankets and seat cushions you can grab from inside. Stopped by for Sunday brunch and loved seeing people enjoying the weather on the patio and grass. There is also a small market open on the other side of the building on Sundays. There was a constant line out the door the whole time we were there, but it moves at a decent pace. You order at the counter, take a number/find a seat and your order is brought to you. The menus are written in French but the friendly staff are patient in explaining/answering questions to anyone who isn't fluent. There is also a lovely case on the counter filled with pastries and sweets. We ordered the Croque Monsieur and an Eggs Benedict, lemon tart and a creme brulee (because why not!!) We also saw lots of poutines go by but held back this time. Also, I don't drink coffee much, but the coffee here is delicious and comes with free refills. Croque Monsieur: a grilled cheese-style sandwich with ham and covered in bechamel sauce is how it was described, and that's exactly what it was. Fluffy bread, thin sliced ham in a sandwich that was lightly grilled and covered in sauce. Flavour was good, but it was rich - almost like a thick country gravy was poured on top. I couldn't eat more than a few bites - too rich for me. Served with a tiny jar of cherry tomatoes and sliced fruit. Eggs Benedict: a weekend special, we chose the smoked salmon option. They also use Montreal style bagels here, so for an upcharge, I was able to have my Benny on a toasted sesame bagel (totally worth it). The eggs were poached soft, the smoked salmon was just the right amount, and there was plenty of hollandaise. Served with deep fried baby potatoes which were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and fruit. Lemon tart: came with a tiny macaron on top that was delicious! The tart shell was buttery and firm, and the lemon filling was the perfect combo of tart and sweet. Might be my favourite lemon tart in town, and I love lemon tarts! Creme brulee: hard sugar shell that cracked beautifully and lots of real vanilla. Not too sweet, and served with a generous squirt of whipped cream and fresh raspberries on the side. Quaint little cafe with great service and delicious pastries. Judging by the long line our entire visit, we aren't the only ones who like it here! read more

So freaking cute. Even the patio outside is quirkily decorates with old window panes and bicycles suspended from the patio structure. It's located in the French Quarter and I've been wanting to go for ages! Inside it's bright and airy, books lined up along one wall and back and white images blown up and framed on the white walls. the menu can be found on a giant chalkboard. FYI it's all in French which was not ideal for me as I've never spoken a word of French in my life. But the staff are super friendly and helpful so don't let that put you off. I just wanted something light and went for the parfait yogurt. Which came with the tastiest granola I think I've ever tasted, the yoghurt wasn't over powering and the fresh pear and nectarine on top was divine. washed it all down with a mimosa. And they were massive - they filled a red wine glass. It was great. All in the atmosphere is perfect for either a date brunch with your honey or catch up with the gals. If you're an English speaker with zero French knowledge like me, don't let the intimidation of the French Quarter scare you away from this gem of a cafe! The food is delicious! I had the special of the day which, from my terrible attempt at reading French, was a chicken and pork pate on a baguette. It was pretty good, but nothing particularly special. The Chicken Pesto, on the other hand, was to die for. So, so flavourful! The sandwiches are served with a cute little mason jar of cherry tomatoes as a side. I also got a poutine, which was so good. I highly recommend trying it out! Another big plus to Cafe Bicyclette was the decor. The ambiance is very open. light, and welcoming. This has got to be one of the greatest little hidden gems in the City. If you don't know about La Cite Francophone and Cafe Bicyclette you really need to come check both of them out! This is in the heart of the French Quarter of Edmonton. This space has been a few different restaurants but finally La Cite took over the space and designed a great concept for a Cafe. If you are fluent or passable in French then the staff will converse with you to your comfort level. The food is great. I've had sandwiches but mostly I am there for the Poutine! And it is fabulous. They have a great patio space that is very artistic and year round. YEAR ROUND. Yes, in the winter they have an awesome patio space. In the summer you can grab some of the loaner sunglasses if you forgot your own. In winter they have loaner blankets, seat heaters, and patio heaters for your comfort. We had a hankering for some Café Leva brunch but it turns out Monday noon is the worst time to go there. There simply isn't any parking with students and hospital staff taking up all the spots. We were really sad as we finally drove off waving goodbye. We opted to go to Café Bicyclette instead hoping the parking situation (the worst part of every Asian driver) would fare better. Maybe because we were in the French district but there was plenty of parking on the street! Upon entering, you'll get a industrial feel with red bricks accented with tasteful pictures on white walls. The menu is written on a black chalkboard and it gets a little overwhelming at first because of the design and sheer number of options but you just gotta pump the brakes and go through it slowly: -You want coffee/tea/latté? Check -You want salads? Check -You want sammies? Check -You want dessert? Check The neat thing is, it's all in French! Yay, thanks French 30, I can finally distinguish what poulet means! The staff greets us in French (I really wanted to stretch the ol' Français legs dropping a comment ça va here and a alors there but decided not to fearing Tina's wraith). We ordered a full works omelette, a chicken croissant sandwich and some lattés. You do seat yourself and the staff does bring out your meal. The restaurant is a very open concept and you are prone to people watch. Before you know it, our meals came out tout de suite. The omelette was pretty zesty and I think with the combination of the sauté mushrooms and friend jambon, it made the omelette too salty for my taste. The chicken sandwich was really scrumptious. The chicken was cooked chicken breast with some seasoning that made the arugula fixings make it a wonderful balance. I kind of wish the chicken was warm but it was overall a really good meal. The caramel latté I had was a couple of stirs short of being too sweet and as I relaxed under the afternoon sun it really grew on me. My biggest gripe though was the price. I personally found it pricey for my taste: $4.50 for a latté (or am I out of a touch?) TL;DR: French speaking staff. Really good sammich. A bit pricey. read more
