This has got to be one of the greatest little hidden gems in the City. If you don't know about La Cite Francophone and Cafe Bicyclette you really need to come check both of them out! This is in the heart of the French Quarter of Edmonton. This space has been a few different restaurants but finally La Cite took over the space and designed a great concept for a Cafe. If you are fluent or passable in French then the staff will converse with you to your comfort level. The food is great. I've had sandwiches but mostly I am there for the Poutine! And it is fabulous. They have a great patio space that is very artistic and year round. YEAR ROUND. Yes, in the winter they have an awesome patio space. In the summer you can grab some of the loaner sunglasses if you forgot your own. In winter they have loaner blankets, seat heaters, and patio heaters for your comfort. On Sunday's in the summer there is also a great French Farmers Market held here 11am - 3pm. Vous devez manger ici! read more

This cafe has one of the best brunches in the city! Hard to go wrong with classic french breakfast food items, good coffee, and excellent service. Some of my favourite menu items include: the Croque-Madame, the Poulet Balsamique and frites. Hard to note any criticism because I have never had a bad experience at cafe bicyclette! Don't worry, you do not need to speak French to order there, but the francophone atmosphere is charming and fun. I recommend trying this place on a Saturday morning, it's close to Whyte ave that you can do some shopping after. read more

This cafe is beautiful! I love the culture in this francophone community. The marble tables, artwork, and decor really make this place more vivacious. The pastries are quite good (made by fanfan patisserie I believe?). The drinks are my favourite. They are so flavourful and satisfying! I think their latte art is some of the most beautiful I've ever seen! read more

2 stars because the latte and croissant were undeniably good. But I can't justify giving any more when the service and food was undeniably terrible. First off, this is one of those places where you order at the counter, then grab a table, then you get food brought to you. Half the people in the life are snagging tables before ordering, so if you abide by the rules good luck. We got a table, but it wasn't cleaned off yet, and god forbid somebody come and do that (eventually the dirty plates were taken away only when there was no room for our food). There is a tip option on the machine at the counter, before you've received any service (and if I could go back in time and take away my tip, I would). I got the wrong order TWICE before somebody brought me the right one. Who knows what I was actually charged for (the bill I asked for was on only the credit copy and not itemized). And no, it wasn't a situation where they were bringing me food meant for other people. They actually seemed to have no idea what I ordered. Twice. When I finally did get the 'proper' food, it was awful and I didn't even bother eating it. I ordered a ham/cheese/tomato sandwich on a bagel. The bagel was cold/untoasted and DRY. As if it had been sitting out for 2 days. The tomato was not in the slightest bit ripe - half of it was white. And no, nobody comes to check on you after they've brought your food. I asked for a water when my food was brought and was told that I could go grab some myself. Which is fine, but there was no sign indicating this or anything and it was said to me in a rude "I'm not here to serve you" manner. Again, if I could take back my tip, I would. I opted not to stand in line again only to complain, since I didn't figure it would get me far. Cut my losses and won't be going back, even for a good latte. read more

I have lived only blocks away from the French Quarter my whole life and ironically have never learned French. I heard about this place, have driven by it and really wanted to try it out. I decided to invite my friend who grew up in Ottawa and has a much more solid grasp of the French language, to assist me with the menu.....and for company I guess ;) We walked in and walked up to the counter where all the menu items were displayed in French and were promptly greeted by the person by the counter in French. I must have externalized my terror because he immediately followed with "can I help you with the menu?" He was super nice about it, and made me feel way better and less like some kind of outsider. We declined his help (after all, that's what my friend was there for) and agreed to try the smoked salmon eggs benedict and their famous poutine. Holy man did we ever make a good decision. That was probably one of the best eggs benedict I had ever had. The hollandaise was rich without being too thick and had the perfect amount of fresh dill to compliment the salmon. My favourite part was the biscuit that it came on instead of the traditional English muffin. It was toasted and crispy, and had little bits of ham in it. Seriously, so freaking good - I hope its a regular brunch item and wasn't just a special. The poutine was also fantastic. Perfect fries, perfect gravy...and of course perfect cheese. We ordered a small to share and it was a fairly decent sized portion. I should also mention that the place really filled up while we were there (Sunday morning at around 11 AM). By the time we left there was really only bar stool space left by the windows. I am sure that come summer when the Farmers Market reopens there will be a line to get in, so get there early. I loved the service, I loved the food and I felt really comfortable. Totally deserving of all the rave reviews and you need to try it for yourself! read more

Have been wanting to come here for ages and finally got round to it and it was even better than I had imagined. The decor is beautiful and really love their outside area, however it was a bit too cold to sit outside when I was there. It has a very authentic French theme throughout, the only thing I'd recommend is to have English on the menu as well as French. My friend and myself just had to take a wild guess at what we were ordering and hoped it was good. We definitely were not disappointed but it would have been nice to read the full menu. The guy that sat us said the English was our waitress, however she spoke very little English so it made it hard. I ordered the Tuna and it was absolutely beautiful, the flavours were unreal! I will definitely be back to this cool little hideout in the future. read more

This is a Yelp Elite hangout spot! I was here a few months ago and saw 4 other elites besides myself! Granted it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon and the place was jam packed with a big line up out the door. I had an americano and a pain au chocolat. I've been on a search for a pain au chocolat that would match my experiences in France and Cafe Bicyclette has done it! It's the most authentic one I've had in the city and now I know where to go when I'm having a craving! read more

Nice little cafe worth checking out when open for the market. Food is good - nothing exceptional - and not overly pricey. You should expect to spend some time in line. Sure, they are busy, but they are not too quick at the cashier - takes some time to finally order. And like the reviewer below, I have a real problem with places that prompt for a tip as soon as you pay - especially when you consider there is not full service from staff. Overall, if in the area, might want to grab a bite to sit on the lawn if you have some free time. read more

I had driven past this place a few times during my lunch hour, and always meant to check it out. I finally did today. The building in which it is nestled is pretty cool, and there are places to sit and enjoy a hot latte or espresso even in the winter months (weather permitting). The café itself, located within the so-called 'French Quarter' of Edmonton, just a few blocks from Whyte Avenue, is beautiful. It is bright and clean, and specializes in French cuisine. The chef, who was at the till when I was asking about what they served with chicken, offered to make me a wrap-styled chicken & mushroom crepe (hold the mushrooms!) on the spot. It took about 5 minutes and cost me $8, and was totally worth it. The next guy in line ordered his whole meal in French, which I thought was pretty cool...despite making me feel like a loser, barely fluent in the one language! I would definitely return to Café Bicyclette for lunch and would recommend it to a friend. I Heart Edmonton read more

I honestly enjoyed Cafe Bicyclette in the French Quarter. At 10$ for a smoked meat sandwich and an additional 4$ for a salad you are looking at restaurant prices. However, I did enjoy it very much. Very nice place with a number tables outside to soak up the sun or shade. I've heard that in winter the light up the stove and have blankets on the seat so you can enjoy the winter outside experience. Might have to come back then and try that out. My party ordered entirely in French. So if you want to brush up on those French verbal skills, this is the place. I should also mention I came here for lunch. Not sure how a dinner experience would differ. Currently, there is a LOT of construction going on in the area so keep that in mind if you are visit this summer/fall. read more

This is a lovely little cafe in the French quarters area! We have only been once on a Sunday and it was quite busy. Despite this, we didn't have to wait too long for food. Lots of brunch items to choose from: omelettes, eggs Benedict, soups, fresh pastries. We had a goat cheese spinach omelette which was very tasty! Included some fruit and a croissant. Also the poutine was amazing. Savory gravy with the real cheese curds. A French classic! There is lots of seating inside, Cool decor and lots of natural light Windows. Great place for a date or even groups for brunch! read more

We've been here for brunch and coffee and have always been pleased but unfortunately had a terrible dinner experience. The charcuterie board had meat that tasted rancid and cheese that was dried up. Our "cheese steak" was made with roast beef that tasted dried up and old. read more

There's is just so much to love about this place, as a French canadien from Montreal, I have been looking for a real good Poutine. It is safe to say I might have found the best in town. We went here for coffee and a snack. If you go, remember your in the French quarter and everything is in French, that being said, the staff are very helpful in translation and there is no judgement if you can't read or speak it. It's a nice quaint little place, great art on the walls, good music, and a very relaxed atmosphere. The server we had was very personable and very easy to talk to. I wouldn't say it was pricey, but I thought you could get more for the money you spent. Overall great place to relax. read more

Really nice cafe, went there on a cold November Sunday for Brunch. Was crowded. The Salmon Eggs Benny was great, wish had room to go for a second round:) The hot chocolate had a great taste but wasnt really "hot"; the cocoa was rich. The $8 medium traditional poutine (fries, cheese curds, gravy) was okay. Good portion. Being a French cafe, I thougut the poutine would be great but maybe I am used to other Poutine varities. Would definitely come back. Overall, satisfied. Friend ly staff and quick service. 4.5/5. read more

I'll start by saying it's a cute little place. Well decorated and a fun vibe. The coffee is good, strong Icon coffee from here in Edmonton. The issue I have is that every time I come here it's ridiculously slow service. I also find them to be pricy. I ordered a poutine ($7) and found the portion really small for that price. It's a place you should try, but only if you have boatloads of time and don't mind the demands on your wallet. read more

in the past few months Cafe Bicyclette has been steadily stocking up on more french style croissants and pastries. This of course is perfect in my books since how can you have a latte without a pain au chocolate? I haven't been here yet for brunch, but my friends say that it is pretty good. In the summer months you can sit outside and even well into the fall and even winter months as they have heaters (sometimes available) and blankets for you to use. During #yeg coffee month I even took a latte art making class with the owner here. It was a lot of fun and I hope they do something like that in the future! A bit disappointed with a few things here. I came in with my husband, all the servers were amazing and offered great service. The location is also wonderful. The first issue we found was that on Sunday we were told it's brunch all day. I'm not big on brunch so was going to get a regular poutine. Here's the issue, they have no regular poutine there, only small side ones. The poutine that they did have in a regular size was a breakfast poutine with eggs on top of hash browns. No gravy. The potatoes were super dry. I, along with another table near by, asked for extra gravy. It was evident that the potatoes were too dry and everyone was expecting gravy with a poutine. We got the gravy...and were charged extra. My husband got a bagel that had cheese, egg and bacon inside. That bagel cost $14! For one little bagel with no sides or salad. I don't mind paying for quality, but this was disappointing and by the sound of it, the chef is not very eager to change things. read more

Delectable brunch options with great coffee as well. On Sundays you can enjoy brunch, lunch or a snack while checking out the farmer's market. The desserts and pastries are great. I recommend the almond croissants, but they are all flakey and amazing. The space is bright and cheery with comfortable seating and a lovely patio in warm weather. A great place to catch up with friends for the weekend or to enjoy a coffee and a treat. Friendly to French and English speakers, a nice cafe near Bonnie Doon. read more

So my sister and I stopped into this spot for lunch on a hot day in la citie francophone (no idea if I wrote that right). Because it's in the French part of the city and right across from the U, everything is in French. I ordered croque Monsieur which the lady said was like a french grilled cheese and it was pretty good. It came with a basil watermelon salad which was pretty darn tasty but the desserts unfortunately were tres dissapointing. That made me sad. There is nothing i dislike more than seeing delicious looking items in a display window and then ordering them and finding out they well, arent good. They were just bland and unoriginal. But the patio and atmosphere was great and the lunch was pretty tasty. So all and all I would say, give it a try. I definitely am going to give it another go in the summer. I got a pro tip that the poutine here is some french term for out of this world. Lets hope it is. read more

Cozy spot but a few disappointments. The menu online differs from what is offered in house .. the weekend menu is greatly reduced from what's available online. I get that it's a French spot but it would still be a nice/helpful idea to have English too for those who aren't well versed in the language. Portion size was decent, food was lovely & tasty. Because you order & pay before sitting, a server doesn't come back around to ask how everything is. Different experience but nice nonetheless. Likely wouldn't go back unless I'm just grabbing a latte & a croissant because they looked delicious ! read more

Cafe Bicylclette is a must visit if you like the feel of quaint cafés or charming bakeries. Although I can only give it four stars based on this visit, I will be back to see if I can add one more :) The space is gorgeous. A nice layout, good design, and simple decor. There are many tables to choose from, including stools at the window. Despite today being Edmontons first real sign of snow, patio furniture was still out, with outdoor heaters and a cozy blanket on each chair. We weren't that brave, so we selected a corner table for two inside. At 3pm, nearly every seat was full. You order at the counter. After stumbling through reading the French chalkboard menu, I chose the breakfast croissant with egg and cheese. This was sooo good. Flakey croissant, runny egg, melted cheese, a bit salty.... I'll be back for this alone. My dining partner had the same and was equally satisfied.. but would have preferred to try the sold out poutine. I was also disappointed by my bitter Americano. However, I'm certain this place will only improve. Other choices included an omelette, soup, sandwiches, salads, yogurt and granola...and more. On the way out we grabbed a sweet scone and a dense, melt in your mouth cookie.. both so delicious! The service was friendly and although I was a little apprehensive about the language, I could make due with the limited memory I have from Grade 8 French class... and the kind girls at the counter helped as well. Like I say, I will be back. If our light lunch is any indication, I can't wait to see what they do for dinner! read more

This is a cute little café located in the heart of the french quarter in Edmonton, Alberta. Not very well known but is a perfect spot for a date, or a weekend brunch. However, I find the food over priced at times, and the quality/presentation quite sloppy at times. Myself, I tried the French Onion Soup and well, I was dismayed to have a lot of broth and less onion that I would have liked. The poutine is good, but that's really the only think I'd recommend 100%. I once ordered the crepes and peaches as a take out and while I can expect that it's not going to be presented beautifully, the last thing i'd hoped was a sloppy, cold mess. Additionally, after ordering a cheese omelette with spinach, I also experienced old, wilted spinach and rubbery eggs. This is a good place with a nice atmosphere, but be careful what you order. read more

A lovely cafe in the heart of Edmonton's French Quarter. With a lovely selection of must have French breakfast food and optional alfresco dining, this place is an excellent weekend brunch option. Came here for the first time yesterday after other brunch plans fell through and I'm so glad at this serious of fortunate events! The only wait we had was in line to order and that was quicks and we were able to find an open table to sit and wait for them to bring our food. The food arrived within 10 minutes. I got the eggs benny and shared a maple crepe with my friend. The food was delicious and priced very well. They serve ACE coffee, which is my favourite local roaster. The space itself is open, and bright as they have amazing natural light coming in from facing windows. Beautiful place, will return soon. read more

Wonderful trendy place, my son really enjoyed the crepes and chocolate, and my daughter loved the brunch poutine ( so did I as it was way too much for her. Wife had the eggs Benny which looked awesome. And I had the salmon / cheese omelet, with a nice thin slices of salmon topping it. I would have to say all the food had unbelievable taste and was very delicious. But I rather enjoy more then one cup of coffee for the price, as I had to order a decaf americano. It is fairly pricey(67+ tip, for breakfast is high for 4 people, two being kids) but the flavour and experience more then makes up for it. I'm not sure I would the frequenting it very often, if I lived here, but it was a nice treat. Patio is wonderful, but on a really hot day like today, getting an umbrella is essential. Although my children have taken French in school, they couldn't read the menu. But the staff is very accommodating. Merci read more

Brilliant cafe, we went as a group of 7 for brunch. We ordered coffee, pastries, eggs benedict and breakfast sandwiches. The food and service are stellar and the atmosphere is clean, fresh and modern. It's a cafe style set-up so you order up front and food is brought to your table as it's up, rather than saved and brought out all at once. Don't worry about not speaking French, staff speak fluent English and will answer all of your questions kindly and patiently. Show up early to get a table for a large group. The rush starts around quarter to 9:30AM for brunch. The patio was open on March 26th, much to our delight and some folks had brought their dogs. We also saw families and groups of young adults enjoying this wonderful restaurant. Lots of free parking around. Highly Recommend. read more

We love this café! A beautiful spot and always good food and warm drinks. The patio is lovely if the weather is right!

Hair in our salad. Three pieces of of hair in our vegetarian meal salad was what we found at the bottom. What's worse is the management taking about 5 minutes to hum and haw over returning to my table and resolve the outcome and while we stewed over the disgusting experience. Heard about this restaurant and wanted to try it, however we honestly had a poor experience overall. Must I say more? read more

In coming home last night from Cafe' Bicyclette, with my companion, we asked each other what rating we would give it....if we could actually, it would be a 2.5. Sorry everyone. I read a number of the reviews but unfortunately, it was a "hit and miss" kind of evening with regard to the food and the price point for what was prepared. I am not an expert in French cuisine, however, when the main accompanying dish is "risotto" and the "vegetarian" option is "ravioli" (and not it wasn't "ravioli", rather a layered "lasagna" made with baked wafers with sauteed spinach and onion)....not sure where the "French" is. Admittedly, the duck breast I had was quite good and not dry with a light pomegranate jus. So, the meal was a "fixed" menu, however, not a fixed price, so depending on what you ordered from the fixed menu, the price varied. This aside, we were served a glass of champagne/sparkling wine and then the appetizers were served. I didn't get the chance to see the menu because it wasn't on their website when I made the reservation, however, my companion did and noted that there were "non meat" options so he didn't worry, and neither did I. However, when I saw the menu while he excused himself a moment, I did let our hostess know and she said they would accommodate him with something "similar". So, on to our meal: The appetizer was ONE oyster (yes, one, on a VERY large bed of ice), the vegetarian option was a generous spinach salad sprinkled with pecans and chevre. My companion loves oysters so I gave him mine (mind you, I did tell the hostess that my companion eats fish). My companion enjoyed his oyster, however, would have liked at least one more little one....I shared my salad with him :-) The charcuterie and cheese plates that followed were very good and well presented. This part of our meal we enjoyed and I enjoyed my spinach salad :-) Before the main courses, we had a nice strawberry sorbetto. As I mentioned above, our mains were the duck breast with a mushroom risotto (the rice was well cooked, however, bland in taste) whereas my companion had the "ravioli" (a bit saltier than he expected). We enjoyed out mains fine, however, given the expectations based on the adjectives given to the food prepared here, I am willing to say the food was good, but not "phenomenal" or "amazing" based on others' experiences. Before anyone mentions it, the restaurant had two seatings, one at 6pm and one at 8pm. Staff was not running around and as far as the "busy" factor, it was steady. This was a nice thing, actually since it gave everyone a chance to eat tranquilly without worrying to rush and also the staff to serve without rushing. The awkward moment came when at around 7:45, you started seeing a lengthening row of people waiting and watching you, watching them as you finished your last sip of wine and to top it off, you were asked to go to the counter to pay, thus another long line of folks waiting to pay to leave so the "2nd shift" can get in.... Will we go again? Yes, since I think, hope and believe our next experience will be better on a culinary level .... **You are wondering about dessert? It was a charming looking heart shaped chocolate cake for two....however, again, the cake to the price point ($26) didn't add up to me or my palate.... read more

I must admit at first glance this place seemed kind of tiny but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in food and atmosphere. The staff here were so friendly and the one gentleman that took my order actually stopped and engaged me in conversation when it had gotten slow. The sandwich I picked up was also simply phenomenal! You wouldn't think grilled cheese, bacon, onion, and guacamole would work together in a sandwich but this was so flavorful I actually found myself wanting another one as soon I was done. I will definitely be back to sit outside at this wonderful establishment and absorb more of the beauty of the french quarter! read more

Best brunch spot in Edmonton (imo). Their eggs benedict is my favorite - especially smoke salmon. In the warmer months they have a great outdoor sitting area with a market that happens around the cafe on Sundays with live music often playing. They also serve come breakfast sandwiches, a limited selection of alcohol and have a dinner menu which I have explored but was not terribly impressed by. read more

Café Bicyclette is a hidden treasure in Edmonton. I have been there a couple of times now and it never disappoints. Their interior is very nice and has this unexplainable comfort. My wife and I popped in there for dinner on a Thursday night and were surprised to see a full house at 6:30pm. I think the servers were a little surprised also as they were run off their feet. Strangely, about 80% of the guests were women. Cafe Bicyclette is a cute space, white and brick and wood and antiquey all over. You really forget you are in the basement of a dated 80s modern campus. Decor is as good as it gets on a budget. Menus are also cutely designed. There are no beers or spirits, only a very small selection of white, red, rose, and sparkling wines. Wines are unfortunately served in a heavy tumbler; easy for the servers and cheap, but not optimal for tasting wine. By-the-glass pours were generous at about 7 ounces, especially considering wines were only $8 per glass. Unfortunately, the wines seemed poorly curated as both of our wines were lackluster. We shared a couple main courses. The steak frites was a block of tough sinewy undercooked beef and limp house cut fries, both in desperate need of salt. Nothing else on the plate. The coq au vin was an immense rubbery thigh and leg of chicken, braised some other time and reheated to order, unfortunately not long enough as it still had a slight chill at its centre. A scant few vegetables lay drowned under the flavorless and lukewarm braising liquid. The mains were $16, so really what did i expect. on the other hand, when food is worse than what i would typically cook at home on a weeknight, I wouldn't pay any price. Food at restaurants should be better than home cooking. The Cafe might consider bringing mains into the mid $20s and use better quality proteins. Service was as good as can be expected considering how busy it was. There were only two servers handling all front of house duties (host, serving, bartending, bussing). Yeah, we waited a while for stuff and the water was never refilled, but I thought the girls did a good job all things considered. Anyway, it is probably a pass for me with regard to going there for dinner again, but I'll give them another chance as I heard they make a great croissant in the morning. read more
