Thankfully, on my latest visit my boyfriend and I showed up right on time and were able to grab one of the few available outdoor tables. The view of the harbor cannot be beat. The server was very attentive and didn't seem disappointed that we only wanted to order a drink. We left after an hour as we weren't ready for dinner or happy hour food and the sun was beating down on us. We were surprised to not see any umbrellas outside given how hot it was. Fantastic restaurant in Orange County. Great views of the harbor and pacific. I had the salmon and it was the best salmon I've ever had at a restaurant. We just had our mother's 100th Birthday Party (luncheon from noon to 3pm) with 70 people at the Chart House and they did an incredible job of prepping a beautiful private room set-up, a delicious catered meal, and were exceptionally attentive to all our requests and needs. The view was stunning of Dana Point Harbor. The cost was quite reasonable. We as a family cannot recommend them more highly for a superior event experience - great for birthdays, wedding receptions, etc. There was no room fee. There was nothing but the food fee. OK, this place is amazing. I don't care about the other reviews. The views of the ocean are breathtaking at 270°. The food is outstanding and you have to get there early if you want to seat with the view if not you can just get up and see it yourself from the bar area or outside of weather permits. The spinach dip was good, but the stand out was the happy hour calamari. Also ordered the shrimp linguine and New York strip. The steak was cooked perfectly and came with yummy garlic mashed potatoes. The HIGHLIGHT of our night however was our server Tony. We were celebrating a special occasion and even thought he was busy, he made it a point to check on us regularly and make our night a special experience. Shout out to Tony!! (There is valet - $8.) Best items: clam chowder soup, crab cake, and hamachi crudo; drinks were fantastic. The sea bass was too salty and the calamari... not a fan. The best part of the calamari plate (other than serving size) was the fried noodles underneath the calamari. My hubby had the halibut on lobster risotto with a beurre blanc sauce. Also heavenly. Drink: well crafted, well presented. I had a delicious cucumber martini and hubby a jalapeño margarita. Both very yummy. Service: Jonathan was perfect. And we are picky about service. Attentive without being overbearing. My mussel shells disappeared without my notice as I ate. The wife, the kid and the sister were geared up and in the mood for King Crab Legs while the sister was in town visiting for Christmas. For two weeks before the sister arrived, I searched for King Crab Legs all over SoCal. Costco, our main source in the past, had something called Golden King Crab that was NOT King Crab, it was a smaller distant cousin from what I could tell. Went to the frozen section where they usually have large, $400 boxes of King Crab. None. Went to every grocery store and found similar or none. Where is all the King Crab?? I got an idea to go to a restaurant to find them and after reviewing many menus, The Chart House was the only one that had King Crab, but it had the ominous and financially fearful "MKT Price". Well, I decided to go for it and made a reservation. So, off we went to seek our King Crab Leg destiny. We arrived early, as we wanted to show the sister the fabulous sunset from the cliff overlooking Dana Harbor. Damn, the sun was setting over the hill behind the restaurant and we did not see a sunset after all. Since it was crowded and we were early, we were told we would have to wait for our table. Off to the bar. Bartender was great and the cocktails were spot on. Thanks James! Soon, a hostess found us and led us to a table. Since it was the Saturday (23rd) before Christmas, the place was packed and we had to weave and bob around tables and people and servers, oh my! Our server, Shandrea, came to us smiling and greeted us. She took our drink orders and an order of the delicious Kim Chee Calamari (don't ask, just get it!). Time to order and I asked about the crab legs. Shandrea said they are served by the pound, how many pounds did we want. I had no idea, so I said a pound each. As she was leaving the table, I realized I never asked what the MKT Price was, so I stopped her. Ninety-five dollars a pound (that's $95!). Well, since it was a celebration and Christmas and since we got a bread basket, butter and some grilled veggies on the side, I said, "let's do it, I still have room on the credit card." The crab came out pretty quickly, considering how crowded the CH was, and it was and it was fantastic. Lots of large, meaty crab legs & claws with melted butter, just what we were hankering for. The kid didn't eat all of hers so I scooped up what she didn't eat. Never did try the veggies! I was in a King Crab Leg coma and I wanted no other food or even dessert. The prime rib is a must! It was perfectly salted and prepared medium rare. I had an espresso martini and that was delicious. We also ordered the shrimp and avocado stack which was very tasty. I'd recommend more durable chips IMO, but we improvised just fine. It was pretty loud in there as far as ambiance goes. I also hadn't noticed an accessible entrance for those that can't go up and down stairs easily. We aren't local, and right after getting seated at a table in a back corner, a window table was being cleared. We asked for it and the host agreed to sit us there- next thing I knew they were checking in and seating someone else there. There was some kind of miscommunication between staff I suppose but no one returned to us to address it. Very slow service. My husband ordered a steak - filet mignon. I've never seen a filet with such a rough texture and so much gristle and fat in it. It looked like it was a totally different cut of beef disguised as a filet and it wasn't good. My fish dish was fine but completely forgettable. I like sea bass so that's probably what I had, but I honestly don't remember. I'd go elsewhere next time I'm in southern CA and in the area. Ordered take out and the staff was fantastic. From ordering to picking up the food, there service was great. Unless you are using valet, parking is difficult as you will need to find street parking. The views from their outdoor seating are breath taking. Ordered clam chowder, Alaskan black cod and herb crusted salmon. The clam chowder had good size chunks of clam however the soup did not have a very strong seafood flavor to it. Alaskan black cod was nice and flaky but did not have much flavor to it, nor the furikake rice. The herb crusted salmon was a little dry and the crumble on top had nice saltiness to it. We went last night for Valentine's Day. I made the reservation months ago and asked for a great table but that didn't happen. We ordered the sweetheart special meals. Lobster and steak....lobster was rubber and the steak was crap. Seafood dish, shrimp were still grey and raw. On top of all that the bill with tip was $600....outragious. I was really excited to bring my partner here for his birthday this past Sunday and everything was going great until our waiter kept forgetting the things we would ask for . It didn't really bother us until our appetizer came and it was cold ,when we let our waiter know about it being cold. He asked us if we were okay with him sticking it in the microwave to warm it up instead of it being remade . For the amount of money being paid for dinner I would expect the service of the food to be better . The waiter had also recommended to add on vegetables with our meals , which he then forgot to bring out and still added it to the bill . The food overall was pretty average and not worth the price , it just a shame because I was excited to visit this restaurant. Lastly I made reservations stating I was celebrating a birthday and never once was it offered to order a dessert or asked if we were celebrating anything that night . The good was poor at best. Everything came out cold or overcooked We ordered clams which came out like warm. Dangerous for shellfish and was inedible. We ordered their fish of the day. It came out on a bed of cool cream of corn and some other vegetable that I couldn't figure out what it was. The fish, halibut, was 1/2" think and dry. Came here with a big family group post wedding and it is such a gem!!! On top of this beautiful hill overlooking Dana Point. Just breathtaking views.. the service was great.. our server Jake was just the most patient, kind guy with my big crazy family. Anticipating our needs, even for the small kiddos. He was a gem. The food was delicious, i could eat that starter bread and butter forever but for my meal I got the macadamia crusted mahi and it was great.
