Had family visiting, so of course we wanted to go somewhere with a view. We hadn't been to Chart House before so we thought we would give it a try. The food was great. However, what made the experience stellar was our server, Johnathan. He was so helpful. He was never pushy but offered just the right amount of information about the restaurant's offerings. He timed everything perfectly. I never thought once "where is our server?" He had drinks perfectly timed along with food. When asked, he gave accurate and colorful descriptions of entrees and appetizers. The amazing service was paired with a wonderfully upbeat personality. I ordered the coconut shrimp entree and lava cake, as well as one of their non-alcoholic drinks. 1) The entree was a decent portion for $27. I was full. The taste was mediocre, however. The mango sticky rice was not really the Thai mango sticky rise you would think of. This one was more bland. I honestly prefer the dishes at Cheesecake Factory. 2) The lava cake was good and decent portion (I got the small size). 3) The drink was syrupy and tasted like sprite. It was $6, and in my opinion, it was not worth it. As for staff, there was one man who helped us out near the kitchen was was very nice and helpful. If i could leave zero stars I would have but yelp doesn't allow it. Originally when i first came here, i left a pretty good review. Then we made a reservation for the 4th of July, upon coming to the restaurant we learn from the valet that regardless of our reservation there is ZERO parking unless we had purchased a special 200 dollar ticket! What the FUCK? Are you kidding me. Why didnt you mention that when we made the reservation? Then the manager tells me i can always go park a few miles a way and get an UBER. He then asks me if I would like to get my reservation put on hold while i drive around a few miles in search of parking. I tell him Ummm yeah I'lI pass. Its a shame your poor valet guys have to take the brunt of all the customers frustrations you Mr Manager should have stood out up front and dealt with all the people that were stuck in my situation. My husband and I would go to the Dana Point Chart House for our anniversary for years and years and I was especially taken with their incredible salad bar and blue cheese dressing. I want back last night to relive my memories and was disappointed. Salad bar was gone. I ordered salad with blue cheese dressing. There was a white milky coating on the lettuce with no flavor and not one piece of blue cheese or flavor of blue cheese. My friend's salmon was burned on the bottom and the fish was dry. I was amazed that the chef would allow that fish to reach the table. I ordered my filet rare. It came barely passing as medium rare. Again, amazing the chef would send it out. I was ok with it, but it was definitely not rare. The waiter was good and attentive and he took the salmon off the bill and brought sorbet to my friend at no cost. For the money, I would never go back. There are places I go that are better for less money. So disappointed. Really went downhill. read more

Made reservation for family of six weeks prior to Mother's Day Holiday. We waited for an hour to be seated as the restaurant was backed up. We then were seated and waited to place our orders and waited 2 hours if not more before our family decided to leave.Our reservation was at 7:00 pm and we told the hostess at 10:00 PM that we were leaving the restaurant and would not be back. Not once in the span of 3 hours did anyone come to our table to explain the situation or apologize for the lack of service - we did ask for bread after order was placed but no other service was offered or provided the entire evening. I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE the Chart House. For decades, it was one of my very favorite restaurants. But in the past year, they have cut the menu, eliminated baked potatoes (WHAT?!!) and the food has not been up to par. The service was extremely slow the last few times I went there, but I assume that is due to a lack of employees rather than a problem with them caring. I go here at least 6-7 times a year. So I made a reservation for my husband's birthday. The worst service ever! Waiter was so busy trying to service a table who he thought would leave him a large tip. I heard them talking and I already knew they were not leaving him not much. I tip 20% always. Just because we don't drink because of medical reasons we should not be judged. We waited on service for water, my 1 glass of wine, salad, bread, they brought our meal out to us to a table with dishes that were not cleared. It was the worst service ever... Then we saw the same people outside and the valet was not much better. They retrieved thier car for them and I saw the tipped the young guy only a single dollar. As we waited an extra 5 min for them to get our car when we were there 1st. We did not take it out on valet guy double valet cost, but he did not open my door. I do have to say, we always dress accordingly when we go to this establishment and look appropriately atiriered. We celebrated our daughters wedding this past weekend at the Chart House. Having to scale way back on numbers due to Covid, we found The Chart House and all I can say is AMAZING!! Marisa Mcquillan is the event coordinator and she is fantastic to work with. Our guests loved the views, the set up and most especially THE FOOD! Location, view and food are all 5 stars, but my server was almost comically bad. She wouldn't speak to us, just came up to us and stared silently until we spoke, and even then only gave one word responses. We went for my birthday and when we ordered a dessert she said I can get the dessert we ordered for free since its my birthday. We went for our first Valentine's date as a married couple. The wait staff was wonderful and the food was decent. For the price we paid, though, you would think it'd be a little better quality. The steak and lobster were good, but the soups were a little lackluster and the dessert didn't impress. Our biggest issue was the reservation/host staff. I made this reservation MONTHS ago and specifically asked for a window seat. I even called ahead to confirm they saw this specification. We arrived 20 minutes early to our reservation they said that there weren't going to be any window tables open at 6, and there were 3-4 parties ahead of us if we still wanted one. We said we'd take whatever was available first. We then waited until 6:10 for a table that was not bussed by the time our host brought us over. We didn't sit down until 6:20. I understand that it was a real busy night, but how do they not have a reservation system down to where you get seated at the time you requested? It seemed like they were a little discombobulated and understaffed. I go back to the point of if you're going to pay a large amount of money, then you expect the experience to reflect what you are paying for. I feel like I could have gone to a smaller, less costly restaurant and have gotten better service. Salad was totally soggy and gross, Polenta was stone cold though .. crispy duck was recommended but it was terribly soggy, skin was like rubber. After we finish and dessert comes we aren't sure what the bday dessert is and turns out to have nuts on it.. when I asked if it's peanuts or almonds since hubby has peanut allergies.. another snarky comment "you need to let me know if you have any "allergies" before I serve you . .. oh thanks for telling us well. U didn't ask us at the beginning . I'm overall upset that dinner took almost 3 hours and the service was slow and rude. After years of wanting to try this restaurant and finally getting to go, I was less than impressed with the experience. 1. Valet parking is at the top, if you drive down past the top deck, there is what appears to be free parking. there are not signs communicating this. (If there are signs, they are not very noticeable.) The valet is amazing and super friendly and helpful. If the inside staff learned from the valet this restaurant would have had a legitimate 5 star rating. 2. Upon walking in there was no one at the front. We stood and waited as other staff who clearly were not the hosts knew we were there and saw us but did not welcome us. (It was not busy as at all) 3. Upon the host seeing us, let's just say she was extremely unfriendly and not a great host by any means. At this time we were just getting out of a long meeting with 6 people, tired, hungry and excited to check out this amazing spot in Dana point that is known as the spot to go! We communicated that we had 6 people she said you can go to happy hour or be seated in the dining rooms, we communicating "can we have a table for 6" she then repeated would you like happy hour or dining. Being a new guest we had no clue what this meant or that there were separate areas or really what was going on. The host did not communicate anything so we decided we would do happy hour. The host then said okay it's over there. As we walk to the section there were not tables for a group of 6 people there were 4 tops and 2 tops. 4. As we were standing there wondering what to do, a bartender and two waiters were literally standing at the bar talking they did not welcome us or try to help by any means. We were standing there like what the heck are we supposed to do here. ****I want to reiterate this restaurant is not a do it yourself kind of restraint like chipotle or maybe shwack down the street but goodness the experience leaves you feeling like you are less than and not welcome We finally had to ask, "is there a table for 6" the lady waiter said outside. No help taking us there or really anything just like oh yeah you it's over there figure it out yourself. 5. We are seated and it took awhile to have someone come to the table to provide menus or even take a drink order. The entire time we felt like a burden not like a group that is spending over $300-$500 on their order 6. We had to ask for boxes because the wait staff was MIA and really did not care to tend to the table. I'm going to be honest this was the worst experience for a first timer. The reason for two stars, the restaurant is beautiful the food is excellent. The chef is AMAZINg. The host and wait staff is terrible. I know there are problems with hiring now, however if I was server that was waiting tables at a restaurant knowing the tips off of the food here..best believe I would be bending over backwards to help the tables the best I could. At the very least being friendly is helpful. I am not someone who is picky or rude, I'm telling you this staff made my entire group including our business partners from out of the country feel like we were not welcome, less than and it's was terrible. This place is marvelous for both their food and their ambiance. When you make a reservation, be sure to request a window seat so that you can enjoy the view of the harbor if you're there for lunch or an early dinner, or so that you can enjoy the sunset if you time things right. They'll ask when you order if you want the lava cake dessert - but I've never found it to be worth the trouble. I much prefer their creme brulee. If you decide to order the mud pie - be warned - it is as big as your head. Seriously, the thing is HUGE - it could feed 4, easily. The steaks can sometimes be a bit underdone, but the fish is always amazing - and their selection of cocktails is fun too. All in all - a great place to go for a special occasion meal. read more

My wife and I have been eating at this Chart house in Dana Point for over 25 years. Sadly this establishment has declined over the years in both service and quality of their food. This is a great location for the view, but the food is overpriced for what you receive. For over 2 decades we have eaten here at least twice a year. They were 15 min late seating us and then sat us inside even-though I called days in advance and was told I'd get an outside seat for our party. The food was just not good; oysters were small and shucked sloppily; the steak was chewy, over cooked and over seasoned; same with the ahi; my guest said the swordfish tasted like it had enchilada sauce poured over the top. Food was good and pretty modestly priced in terms of what you're getting. I mean the chart house set meal was priced at around 40 something bucks. My wife had a salad, prime rib and lava cake for $40 bucks.. 10oz prime rib is priced at $34 which isn't that steep in my opinion. Both our prime ribs came out medium rare as ordered...
