Fantastic!! This might be the best Flores family restaurant yet! This one has a Mediterranean flair. I already have plans to go back! The service was fantastic, we were constantly checked on, by our waitress as well as the owner, who checked in twice to make sure our food was good! My Sandia refresher with chai seeds, and basil was so refreshing for the hot day. The Spanish lesson appetizer was full of healthy fats, with spiced marcona almonds, olives, garlic, and lima beans, which I never liked, but I liked these ones!! The chips were brought right away, they were homemade, and came with a chunky green salsa. My bandera enchiladas were fantastic! One with beets and calabacitas, one with chorizo, and one with papas and poblano! Oh my goodness - the flavor!! The beans and grains on the side were fantastic! Had a wonderful birthday lunch with friends, sitting outside on the lovely patio. The service was excellent, warm, friendly and efficient. The waitress overheard my friends says that today was my birthday so SHE put in an order for chocolate churros with chocolate dipping sauce (complimentary) and you can't get more thoughtful than that. I love the bowls because you choose your own grains and greens, protein and sides. The portions are very substantial. I always take half home. The manager always comes over to ask how we are doing and to see if we need anything. This is typical Tucson hospitality, especially at the Charro restaurants. read more

What a treat this place is! We started our evening with the cauliflower, ahi stack, and Brussels. My favorite was the Brussels. They tasted like they had an extra healthy kick because of the liquid aminos. The little peppers were an added bonus!! For beverages- we had the margarita zero and el maestro. I have always loved El Charro, but their latest evolution is are in the wrong direction. The vida grains are bland; the beans are flavorless, the pancakes were pasty. On top of the food issues, they ran out of the cinnamon butter for the pancakes and salsa. I get that they are a new restaurant, but how can you run out of items one hour into service? To top it all off, there is no changing table in the men's room. I get so sick of this institutional sexism so I usually ask for a manager to close the women room so I can change my daughter's diaper, I did just this but then there was no changing table in the women room either. The only reason they get 2 stars is that it is a nice environment and service is decent but they need to improve food and get changing tables in the restrooms. read more

If you've ever gone to El Charro and wished there were more vegan options, CharoVida is right up your ally. CharoVida, in the El Charo family, takes classic Mexican dishes and puts a modern vegan spin on them. Came here for a date night after it being recommended by a friend. The location and ambience were excellent and there are plenty of boutiques and shops to peruse while you wait. We got the horchata and violate margarita. The horchata was fine but tasted closer to sweet rice milk topped with cinnamon. I wish the cinnamon was mixed in. The margarita was small, but strong and refreshing. We started off with chips and salsa. The orange salsa had a unique tang unlike any salsa I've ever tried and the plantain chips along with the corn chips were a nice touch. For dinner we had the vida bowl with half greens, half grains, salmon, brussel sprouts, street corn, and guacamole. The salmon was cooked well and the street corn was one of the highlights of the meal, you must try! We also also got the Chile relleno with vegan queso and vegan chorizo. If your expecting a traditional Chile relleno, this isn't for you. The dish is much lighter, but still packed with flavor and instead of being stuffed, it is topped with the queso and chorizo. Overall, we had a great dinner, the staff was friendly, and if you're vegan, dairy free, gluten free, or just looking for healthier alternatives, CharoVida is a great option. read more

Birthday lunch for 2 of us in a new place was a disaster. Started with their putting 6 of us in a booth in the bar by the front door. I asked for another, and several were vacant and remained so throughout. The reason was the servers weren't serving there. Ha! Then, the service was abysmal...slow, slow slow. The menu and food were not much either. The server kept saying, Be Right Back. The manager came over and paid for the lunch of a woman who had to get back to work who was was the last to be served because the griddle could only cook one batch at a time. The manager offered dessert for the birthday celebrants, recommending the churros. Finally got the dessert menu. One of us passed and I wanted the recommendation. Did t come, didn't come but at last the order was taken. Took a chance to make it a to-go order. We asked for checks and when we finally got them, my free dessert was still no where in sight. It tasted ok except for the vegan cheese which tasted like plastic. My husband had a vegan burrito which was pretty good and reasonably priced. Tonight was my first time trying charro Vida. I'm not a fan of el charro but thought this would go better since it's mostly plant based food. I was disappointed almost as soon as we sat down and it took 10 minutes for water and 30 for beer. I made reservations for 6:15 PM and it was like we were ignored for most of our time there even though the restaurant was not crowded. The mini chimis were good. Really good but I think they're overpriced at $9 for what you actually get. Guacahummus is on the menu but that's it in terms of Mediterranean food. I'm not sure why it keeps being recommended as Mediterranean instead of TexMex, which it most definitely is. I ordered the Viva Burrito and asked for it without the Vida grains, enchilada style. When it finally arrived, it only had rice and no veggies so I asked for it to go back and my friend finished her dinner before I even got the "correct" burrito. The burrito that arrived had half of a burrito that was hot from the salsa verde and another half with the red enchilada sauce was freezing cold. The cheese on top has nod not even melted. The inside veggies had not even been warmed up. The hola hemp tortilla was hard and difficult to eat. I wish they would have used just a normal tortilla that Tucson has in abundance. I appreciate what they're going for with all of the vegan options but I don't think I'll be back. It took entirely too long to get food, it wasn't correct the first time, and the second time it just wasn't any good. read more

We got to spend waaaaay too much time staring at her butt. Not what I want with my meal. My next visit was with my husband for dinner. This time we couldn't be seated in the dining room as it was booked with reservations, but were offered seats in the bar. That was OK with us. Our server quickly took our drink orders and brought the out to us right away. We did a better job explaining the menu. I chose the ahi tuna tostada and my husband ordered enchiladas. He needs gluten free food and was pleased to find many choices on their menu. So he chose the enchiladas with no added protein. He said they were OK, but missed the meat. My ahi tostada was delicious. It has the same slaw my tacos had. I would give food 4.5 stars. Problem was, it turned out, our server was the bar tender. As the restaurant got busier she was focused on serving drinks and food to people seated at the bar. My husband wanted a refill of his water and I finally had to stop another server to request it. We also had to get another server to bring us a takeout box and our check. I would give service 2.5 stars. My rating of four stars is because of the view at lunch and poor service at dinner. It's nice having a choice of three different tacos for your dinner, all of which were well seasoned. I particularly liked the plant based chorizo. My husband had the dos enchiladas and was surprised that the meat was on the top of the enchiladas, not inside. Inside was melted cheese. Nonetheless, it was still very good. Would have given 5 stars but we had to wait pretty long for our bar drinks which were delivered just before our meal arrived. It was mid afternoon and not very busy. My prickly pear lemonade with pomegranate liqueur was awesome. Overall, nice variety of choices for both vegan and non-vegan eaters. What a wonderful addition to the Charro family of restaurants! As to be expected, the food was incredible, dishes were carefully curated, and the quality was exceptional. The concept is the be as healthy as the Spaniards, who were voted the healthiest people on the planet (I believe this is what the server said). Upon seating, the server explains what Charro Vida is all about and why. The majority of each dish is vegetables. I had the vegetarian enchiladas and they were extraordinary. Their grains and beans are flavorful. Their sauces are complex. I was definitely impressed. You will definitely spend a pretty penny on your meal, but it's worth a try! read more

When a group of friends and I walked in we were greeted with amazing customer service and directed to our table in a fast manner. They give you complementary chips and salsa (2 free rounds) and the chips are AMAZING. Perfectly warm and fresh i ordered the salmon de la costa and a horchata to drink. First, the horchata is perfectly creamy and exquisite. Secondly, the salmon was so buttery and juicy and you could cut it with a spoon! The sides (Brussel sprouts and hummus) perfectly complement the salmon and if you get all on one fork, it is an explosion of flavor in your mouth! I'm updating my review due to the recent experience I had here & also considering they've been in business longer than my first visit. I was meeting a girlfriend for lunch and we were going to order from the happy hour menu but I needed something to tide me over until then, so I order the daily soup. The server described it to me so-so. It came, and I did not like it. I was starving though so I ate about 1/4 of the bowl. Personally I didn't like how overcooked some of the veggies seemed and it did seem somewhat oily. When he checked in with me and asked if I liked it, I said "it's okay" and he just smiled and walked away. Kind of an odd response- why ask if I like it or not? It makes me think they hear this often because of the wide range of interesting things on the menu, but should have some different way to handle it. I set the bowl aside and much later he asked if I was done. I responded that I was and he said "hopefully you'll find something you like next time!". Yes, but I'm here now! Maybe a half comped bowl of soup would've been a fair offer but the $7 soup was on my bill. It's experiences like this that make someone not want to go back, especially when there's a great restaurant right next door with a happy hour at the same time. In terms of happy hour choices- I thought the hummus was just "fine" and the prickly pear tacos just tasted like BBQ which I find off putting when it comes to my personal taco preferences. The platter is perfect if you want to try various things. My favorite thing on the platter were the beans and beets (and I don't even like beets!). Overall, I would say everything was great! I think the server, who was very nice, may need to still learn the menu herself and be a little more assertive in making suggestions, especially with such an intricate menu. Enjoyed a nice lunch with my husband on Friday at Charro Vida. First time there. Super fresh tamales and chopped salad. Both were excellent. Our server Staci was great and knew the menu very well. The only thing off was their house margarita is described on their menu with only three ingredients--lime, orange juice and silver tequila. Sounded simple, fresh and just right. However, it didn't taste so great after ordering one. Staci explained it also included a prepared margarita mix and placed a new order for their Margarita Zero. That was the ticket! Fresh ingredients (no mix), was delicious. Hope the restaurant considers correcting their menu so others don't get the wrong idea too. Anyway, food, Staci and atmosphere were great!
