Food 4/5 I was pleasantly surprised by the food, especially after reading the mixed reviews beforehand. We visited on Thanksgiving Day, and this was one of the few places open in the area. We played it safe and ordered a cheeseburger, chicken tenders, and fries, and we were also told the chili was a specialty. Everything turned out to be quite tasty. The fries and the burger were especially good. I'd definitely recommend trying any of these items! Customer Service 3/5 We accidentally entered through the bar area, and since we're not from the area, we stood there for a moment trying to figure out where to order. No staff greeted or directed us, so we were a bit confused. After walking around, I eventually found the dining area, and once we were seated, our waiter was friendly. Ambience 3/5 The restaurant has a charming small-town vibe. It's a very cool little spot, nothing fancy, but cozy, and they have a bar area which is cool. The window views were also really nice ! My husband and I ate at Charlie's Mountain View in Government Camp, Oregon on a weekday in Sept, 2024 for lunch. We sat in the outdoor seating area under an umbrella in the front of the restaurant; about 80% of the tables were occupied. I ordered a Korean Beef Hoagie ($18) from the Sandwiches menu. It featured thin-sliced Korean beef, gouchujang (chili sauce) aioli, pickled carrots, and cucumbers on a toasted hoagie roll. (I asked for the sauce on the side because I wasn't sure how spicy it would be). It was served with your choice of fries, chips, or soup; I went with the fries. My overall rating: 3/5. The fillings for my hoagie were quite delicious -- the beef was seasoned and cooked well; the carrots and cucumbers were pickled with just the right amount of vinegar and sugar; and the sauces (served separately as a chili sauce and a tzatziki (?) complemented the tastes and were not overly spicy. My rating is only a "3" out of 5 largely because the fillings were quite thin given the thickness of the toasted hoagie bun, especially at the $18 price point. The bulk of the bread overpowered the tastes of the fillings. My husband's choice was the BBQ Burger ($17), which included a grilled beef burger, topped with slow roasted pulled pork, jalapeños, onion rings, pepper-jack cheese, and house BBQ sauce. He selected chips as his side. He rated his burger a "4", once he took the abundant number of jalapeños off that made the burger too spicy for him. Unlike my selection, his burger was huge with alot of meat and an onion ring on his burger. The fries were excellent and generous in quantity (5/5). Unfortunately, we can only rate the service as 2/5. While our waiter was attentive when we first arrived and was quite friendly, his overall service wasn't too good. As mentioned, my husband ordered chips with his meal, it was delivered with fries. (He didn't mention it to the waiter because it wasn't a big deal). Neither of us received silverware. My husband called him over to request a fork, which never came. I was hoping for a refill of my water after eating the spicy food; it was offered only after we were paying our bill. We also had to ask twice for a takeout box for leftover fries. The outdoor tables with comfortable, and we appreciated the umbrella to shield us from the midday sun. read more

When my friend put 0$ on the ticket for the tip (because he wanted to tip cash) the server snatched his receipt and said "you know when your doing that I'm paying for your food" and my friend said well I wanted to tip you cash. She didn't say anything. then when the food buzzer went off we went back to get our apps and they just refunded us and said we aren't getting our food. I've never been treated like this in an establishment and as a server myself I wouldn't DREAM of risking my reputation or tips over a misunderstanding like that. Ok, you are in the woods on Mount Hood ... what are you expecting? This is a bar that added food services. This is not Timberline Lodge, it's a bar. BUT, get ready for some of the best food in the area to be served to you. This is always the standby for us and every time we go they knock it out of the park even if you just get there Charlie burger! And if you're used to being waited on at your tables, forget it go up to the bar and order your food because it depends on the bartender, but this new generation are dictating how we are served so just give into it because the food is awesome. The beers are good and the spirits are very strong. Highly recommend recommended.! at the turn of the century this place was voted in Playboy magazine as the number two dive bar in the country for food, wine, spirits, apré ski activities. Oh yeah, I forgot it is an after Ski bar but during the summertime it's great to come here after a long hike or mountain bike ride. This is a great spot to be anytime of the year.. they also have wonderful breakfast services on Saturday and Sunday mornings. read more

Had dinner at Charlie's last night and it was perfect. 4 adults and 4 kids. Got us seated quickly, drinks delivered fast, food orders (which were many and changing!) all correct. The server was a real highlight - running around to the entire place (may have been the only server on staff?) with a smile, warmth and professionalism. My family and I were having a great time until we ordered our food at the bar. We paid and put $0 as the tip so we could give the bartender a cash tip. She then tapped on the receipt at the $0 tip and said "you know Im pretty much paying for your food". in a rude tone. We explained that we were going to give a cash tip but now we don't feel comfortable giving her a tip. She then said, " well we'll see how long it takes to get your food". I then went to get our food because we got notified it was ready. I gave her the buzzer and she snatched it out my hands and said, "Im not serving you, here's your refund". She proceeded to walk away before I could say anything and kept giving us looks with the rest of the customers at the bar until we left. I've never experienced anything like this and was appalled I got talked to this was by a woman pushing 65 while wearing pig tails. I really wanted to like this place--after a day on the mountain, it should be the perfect spot to unwind. Instead, it felt like I walked into a locals-only club where the staff and guests compete for "most unwelcoming." First, the staff. Cold, inattentive, and borderline rude. It took forever to get acknowledged, and when they finally did, it felt like I was interrupting their group chat. Smiles must be out of stock. Then the crowd. Imagine a bar full of people who peaked in high school and never left. Loud, entitled, and giving serious "this is OUR place" energy. Not exactly the cozy mountain vibe I was hoping for. Food? Fine. Drink? Passable. But none of it is worth dealing with the toxic atmosphere. Government Camp deserves better than this. Super shitty place. read more

We had our first visit last week while staying nearby. Our party of 4 placed a dinner order for take-out. We opted for 3 bonfire Turkey paninis and a chicken Caesar wrap (they accommodated our request for grilled chicken instead of crispy on the wrap). For our sides we ended up with fries, o-rings, and a side salad. My daughter and I split the wrap and a panini. Honestly, they were both fabulous. The caesar dressing was yummy, and the wrap full of chicken. The paninis had great flavor, and o rings and fries were all crispy. So far on our trips to Hood, this was our favorite meal. Simple food choices, but great flavors cooked perfectly make for a great dinner. We will most definitely be back. read more

My husband and I just left this place - hungry and without food - because the staff here completely ignored us. Not only did two groups who arrived after us get waited on before we did (which we chalked up to us having moved tables because our dog needed a quieter spot), we saw two other groups walk in WAY after us and immediately be waited on. There was not so much as a hello or "we'll be right with you." When you said something about it before leaving, the staff was dismissive and rude. Came here on a Monday afternoon after completing a multi day backpacking trip. Stumbled across this place after I tried going to Glacier Public House down the street and it was closed. Charlie's Mountain View is your typical dive bar, service wasn't phenomenal but it wasn't terrible either. Found a seat right away at the bar area and got myself a pFriem Pilsner on tap ($6 for a pint). I ordered: -Bacon Pepper-jack Burger ($16.50) - pretty standard burger, meat was a little dry and the fries were pretty basic. A bit pricey for what it was. I honestly was willing to scarf any type of meal down after my backpacking trip. I'll give kudos to Charlie's Mountain View for a quick beer and burger but nothing outstanding besides that. read more

This place has to be the best spot spot the grab food for a normal price when you are on the mountain... We are only in Portland but often we'll meet family from out of town to stay at the resort. I don't know if you have seen the prices but they are crazy and this short drive makes the stay a whole lot more enjoyable and a whole lot more affordable... I will say they have some good items that I really enjoyed. They have their friar on point because these French tries came out perfect. I don't know about you but anytime I'm in higher elevation the need for fried foods and and just good old American wares hits me hard. Definitely come in and support this great divy place because you're not gonna find many like it in the area. Now it's mountain food bits barfood it's just good food it's not farm to table it's not some over the top original ideas.. It is just good food done right cooked well and served hot. Here is what you need to know about eating in Government Camp and about the Taco Shoppe. Eating in Govy: 1. Don't stop and eat in Govy if you don't want to pay the "premium" as the prices in town are inflated because they're secluded and it takes more to get food up the mountain. (Even gas prices are about 50cents more than going out of town.) 2. All Govy businesses are having trouble getting people to work in town and especially at restaurants so they need to charge more to their customers to get employees to work for them and to stay afloat during these hard times. 3. Outside dining, inside dining, and take out are all available. They tell you to pick one method and stick with it! No in and out bouncing or ordering take-put then sitting down. 4. It's COVID and their community is more "transient" than most small mountain towns. They're doing their best to take precautions for their staff so they can stay open in the long run. 5. Welcome to tourist town! They got you! Where else are you going to go? The gas is expensive. All restaurants are expensive. Housing is expensive. If you don't expect to pay, eat in Sandy or Hood River before making your trek uphill. About this restaurant - Charlie's Mountain View: 1. We ate outside with a group of 5 which morphed into 8, which isn't uncommon for their outdoor "beer garden" style of table seating. I even cashed out and left early, because the group tables are so flexible. 2. The staff seemed overworked and are probably under appreciated by clientele. Our waiter was alone in the patio serving all the full tables alone! It was hard to get his attention or keep his attention or ask questions BUT I have to say that he was doing his best. Tip as you wish but I still gave 20% to help keep this waiter's moral up as well as keep him in Govy instead of leaving for work in Welches or Zigzag. 3. We were there at lunchtime and the table we got was the last available outside. I have been to 3 other restaurants in town and have had extremely long waits depending on the time of day. We were looking for a breakfast place, and even though Yelp did not identify Charlie's as a breakfast place, we decided to stop by. Food was pretty good would maybe give it a 6/10 but was kind of bewildered when the bartender wouldn't serve me? I had just came back from the mountain and was with a group of friends. Other people in my group had ordered alcohol successfully but when I came up to the bar to order a drink he refused me saying "you guys need to slow down on the shots". I said "what do you mean? I haven't even ordered alcohol?" Keep in mind I haven't even ordered alcohol at this point only food, and I was not visibly drunk by any means. There's parking and outdoor seating for warmer days. The inside has a ski lodge vibe. We got the Hawaiian BBQ cheeseburger, which was pretty tasty. The Caesar salad was light and refreshing. The Tilly Jane turkey burger was pretty onion-heavy and the bonfire sauce was spicier than expected. The real standout here is the French fries!! I don't know how they make them but they're perfectly crispy and delicious! Don't ever eat here! Just placed an online order and paid extra to get a bowl of soup, tried to call and get a refund because they didn't give me the soup. This has now been the third time that I have paid extra to get a different side or more of a side and they have not provided any side at all. I was then told by the staff that the reason I didn't get the side I had already paid for is because I did not leave a tip. I have been a long time customer and local up here that is going through a difficult financial time. I will be sure to never return to Charlies, I can not believe that I was told that I would have gotten food I paid for if I had tipped! By far the worst service I have ever had at any establishment.
