It was tough n chewy (overcooked--you need to cook on high heat but quickly so that it melts in your mouth) and overly sweet (need to balance out marinade) compared to my eomeonim's which I usually compare Galbi recipes to. While fat is the flavour you look for, a great galbi is not greasy like this was. The fat definitely was not rendered correctly. A lot of random Asian fusion going on so it can be confusing. . . Lo Mein was decent and will be something I will crave when I want a cheat meal. We dined on a Friday about 6:30pm. There is no instructions at the door, no wait stand or hostess. We asked a server if we just seat ourselves, they said yes, so we sat for about 5 minutes before being greeted. Server came and we placed our entire order. Two beverages- both sodas were flat and I got a lime instead of the lemon I ordered; an order of pork egg rolls- very tasty; an order of crab butterflies- their take on Rangoon's which had me wondering were the crab was; and an order of kung po chicken- the sauce was flavorful however there was a lack of chicken that seemed to be substituted with diced green and red peppers, neither are my favorite and are an odd addition to the dish. Ordered their tuna, crab kimbap rolls and a cheese butterfly from here for our starters. Food order would take about 10-15 minutes for pickup. Total is $21.04. Food took closer to 20 minutes. They might open on Monday at 25% capacity. The cheese wrap or cheese butterflies were crunchy, creamy and quite yummy, even without the sweet plum dipping sauce. No hint of crab or veggies of any sort. The crab kimbap wasn't bad, the tuna was better. Neither kimbap has any spinach but quite missed it in the crab kimbap roll for sure. Neither of the rolls had all of the different flavor and texture profiles that I would typically expect in Korean kimbap. I would definitely get the cheese wrap and maybe the tuna again. The pick up orders are handled in the back bar of the restaurant. They were cut out windows for payment and for pick up. read more

Food is very good. Kung Pao Chicken is a favorite of mine. Also recommend the Seolleongtang soup. Surprise surprise, super impressed with the offerings at this restaurant which was a mix of Chinese, Korean, and Thai dishes. I got the fresh seafood rolls with cellophane noodle - very fresh, and crispy on the inside with a well-wrapped outside soft rice wrap. But the star of the day was the soondoobu jigae, the traditional Korean tofu stew. They used a number of seafood items that infused the dish with significant amt. of flavor, including clams and mussels. The tofu was appropriately soft (without falling apart) and the portion was fairly large (a dinner portion). It came out bubbly hot, and kept its temperature throughout the meal. Having lived in the East Lansing area more than two decades ago, we had fond memories of delicious Charlie Kang lunches when they were a small and low-key Asian food option across from campus. Fast forward to their new-to-us location (they moved four years ago) just a few doors away on Grand River (now closer to Abbott) and their menu offerings have expanded, there's a bar in the rear, and everything we ordered was delicious and prepared to our requested spice levels. We did a takeout order to enjoy with family who live in the area, placing it in the early afternoon, due to convenience, for an evening pick-up. Our order was piping hot and ready at the requested time, so any concerns we had regarding the dishes being prepared too early because of our early call-in were for naught. We had Chap Chae (clear bean noodles sauteed with vegetables) with beef, Black Bean Sauce Stir Fry with chicken, Eggplant in Garlic Sauce with pork, and Mongolian Shrimp. Everything was very fresh and delicious! (Note my photo of the eggplant dish! The blue of the eggplant was gorgeous!) The only issue with our experience, having nothing to do with Charlie Kang's, is that the parking in downtown EL is absolutely horrible. Fortunately, I was able to run in to pick up the order as my husband circled the block, but beware that it's not an easily accomplished one-person mission. If we still lived in the area, I'd opt for delivery. Despite my complaints about parking, Charlie Kang's is now #1 on our list for Korean/Chinese food when we're back in East Lansing. read more

Just outside of MSU campus, the ambiance is nice and cozy, we went for dinner on a rainy day and sat by the window. The Szechwan chicken was yum but the Pad thai was extremely bland even after I asked for HOT (spice level) I asked for having my plate fixed to make it Spicer but it was no use. I learnt a lesson not to order Thai dish at a Chinese restaurant, I should have known better, but the hostess was nice and took half off the price the dish. Since I was stuck in East Lansing for work for Lunar New Year, I figured i could at least get some noodles to help facilitate longer life. Luckily, Charlie Kang's is pretty close to where I'm staying, and you can order takeout in the back of the restaurant. Ordering went pretty smoothly - I ordered my chapchae (stir fry clear bean noodles and beef with shredded vegetables) from a waitress who was still being trained, but she got it quickly enough. The food came quickly enough. I was pleasantly surprised by how much food the chapchae order came with - I couldn't finish the container of chapchae by myself, and it came with a similar-sized container of white rice. I was a little confused by adding white rice to a noodle dish, and would prefer they pair it with any other side that's not more carbs. Besides that, they also had some kind of banchan - kimchi and pickled vegetables I think. I am unfortunately not a huge fan of kimchi, but I was impressed by the nice little package. I would definitely come back here, but I'd probably stick to the Korean dishes. I love that I can get kimbap pretty close by. The Chinese food looks pretty typical of Chinese American takeout, which is fine, but the Korean dishes look more intriguing and I'll almost definitely be back. read more

I called in to get sizzling rice soup, asking what was in the soup as I have allergies. The girl on the phone stated there were, carrots, cabbage, onions, peas and chicken in the soup. I ask for no carrots and ask if I can add shrimp, no carrots wasn't a problem but they wouldn't add shrimp. I decided that was no big deal. I get the soup, half of it is water chestnuts which I'm allergic to and was not in the list of ingredients she told me. Very under seasoned and little flavor. Will not be coming back. Now mind you, the reason why I am writing an update is because since my last review, the restaurant moved to another nearby location and due to construction it was really hard to find the place...yet it was all WORTH IT! The restaurant's new look actually complimented the quality of the food that they served. Very clean, modern and hip. They did a great job with the atmosphere and decor. We were seated and ordered 2 bowls of Jajjang Myun and Soon Dobu, and Bibimbap and they did a wonderful job of omitting the fish sauce and seafood, egg, etc and made it vegan friendly. The food blew us away! My wife who had a difficult time with the children for the past few days during my business meetings totally forgot about all that because she enjoyed the food so much! Coming from Korea she said that this by far was the best Korean food she ever had since she came to the US, (that's 7 years of marriage, folks!) especially since they are considerate to the preferences of vegans and STILL it tasted phenomenal! My 5 year old daughter who was devouring the jajjang myun kept saying, "This is soooo good! So yummy! I love Charlie Kang's!" She insisted that I write a review and give Charlie Kang's 10 stars! And then said to give it 100 stars! My 19-month son was loving the jajjang myun and he was in heaven as he was gobbling up the noodles as much as his little mouth could with the sauce around his little lips! Plus the prices for each order was very reasonable, usually across the board Korean restaurants are outrageously over priced that my wife and I say it's cheaper to make it ourselves. I would hope that the waitstaff please bring new drinks out to the tables when someone needs a refill, and not return their used cup, especially if they have used a straw. We tried the stir-fry squid with fried rice and bulgogi with steamed rice lunch options. Each dish was accompanied with an egg drop or hot & sour soup. The squid was tasty in a salty dark sauce. As for the bulgogi, sweet & savory seasoned meat garnished with green onions. Simple & clean broth for the egg drop. Though, not a fan of the hot & sour. Kinda reminded me of sriracha enhanced base.
