Charlie's touts being "the #1 cheesesteak in the USA, officially!" Well, I demand a recount. Charlie's isn't even the #1 cheesesteak in Baton Rouge! (Go to Philly Me Up on Jefferson Hwy; you'll see what I mean.) I ordered their "Old School" cheesesteak. The whole experience plummeted when the young lady dressing my sandwich had the audacity to ask me if I wanted MAYONNAISE on it. Seriously? Mayonnaise?!!! On a cheesesteak??? Furthermore, people who know REAL Philly cheesesteaks know that the sandwich comes on one...and only one...roll, and it's from the Amoroso Baking Company. As for the meat, it was relatively flavorless. And the onions were virtually non-existent. Look, as a plain ol' sandwich, it was OK. But to call Charlie's "the #1 cheesesteak in the USA, officially!" is to do an unforgivable injustice to Geno's, Pat's, Larry's Famous, and countless other joints that serve REAL cheesesteaks. read more

I've joined an informal club. It doesn't have many rules and I'm allowed to talk about it. We eat cheesesteaks. Preferably at a different location each week. Here are my musings concerning this particular cheesesteakery. Their sign says #1 Cheesesteak in the World. I don't know about that because I haven't had every cheesesteak in the world but theirs was pretty dang good. It's in the mall food court so it could be busy or not. Grab a sample while you wait in line! My order was easily placed, quickly cooked to order and served. My lunch-mate didn't fare so well. He was asked for his zip code AND his pin # at the point of sale. This didn't sit well with my conspiracy theorist friend. I chalk this up to the mall food court employee training program. Never heard of it? Um...bc I made it up. This sandwich was probably my favorite cheesesteak in Baton Rouge (so far). The bread was perfectly toasted, with a slight crunch atop a doughy interior. The meat and veggies were seasoned well and piping hot. The cheese, while not Eazy Cheeze, was melted and plentiful. Add to that the very crispy and hot french fries and this was a delightful meal. I feel bad for some of the other places where I've eaten cheesesteaks in town. It seems like they put in a lot more effort for a lot less reward. Charley obviously has it down pat. read more

For a quick, hot meal, this place is really good. My son loves the California chicken sub. There's one guy who works there, the guy who "dresses" the sandwiches and hands you your order, who is super-friendly. He always asks, "How are you doing today?" and always has a smile, and when you ask him how he's doing he always says, "I can't complain." I like that guy. read more

Food here is pretty basic. It's pretty much that mall, filler food with decent quality. I almost always see an employee handing out samples. Because of those samples, I have gotten some sandwiches from there before, with fries, of course. The customer service has always been good and they are speedy! It takes the cooks minutes to finish cooking the meat for the sandwich and are quickly playing. Remember, this is located at the food court of the Mall Of Louisiana. Sub hot, sandwiches with various side options. Keep those sandwiches coming and win our tastebuds with those samples. As far as I know this is the only Charley's in town. Maybe we'll be back. Yeah sure it's a national franchise, but this mall food court place serves a mean sub. I was very pleased with my cheesesteak which included grilled jalapenos and the loaded fries I added to my order. Despite some weirdness with the order process (such as asking 3 times what toppings I want: I want whatever it comes with!), I would still go back. Ultimately, the people were pleasant, the food was hot, pretty quick, and a welcome change from many of the other food court offerings. read more

I decided to try this place out after a few hours of shopping. It's located right by Izzos in the Mall of Louisiana's food court. The line isn't the fastest, but it's not the slowest either. I ordered the Ultimate Club, which has turkey, ham, bacon, and cheddar cheese. They cook/heat up the meat on a griddle right in front of you. I also got a peach and blueberry lemonade, which is sooo good! The fries are delicious also. I'm not disappointed, and I'll definitely be back. read more
