I met a few colleagues here for dinner after a recommendation from friend. We didn't eat much as it was late but we tried an eggplant appetizer, a squash appetizer, the baked potato , the wagyu sirloin and the ribeye. Everything was cooked well except the potato was a bit too charred and tough for my liking. I absolutely loved the eggplant and squash appetizers and the grill flavoring was a really nice touch. The steaks were cooked to medium rare (which we ordered) but they lacked seasoning. They had many house made sauces at our table but I'm not much of a steak sauce fan (I prefer the steak speaks for itself). The meat was very tender and juicy and I haven't had chargrilled steaks in such a long time that it definitely satisfied what I was craving. The staff were incredibly attentive and polite and the restaurant had a nice ambiance. Given the price I'm not sure if I'd go back as the steaks were a bit of a let down (even if they hit the spot). I would give 3.5 stars but the staff were so nice and the appetizers were so good that I rounded up. read more

Wait staff was friendly, no issue there. Our entries took almost 90 minutes to arrive. They continued to apologize, after about an hour. We were told the pork chop (one of many dishes) was taking a long time to cook. When everything arrived, the pork chop was way undercooked. Bone was still red, and that's my favorite part! Other dishes were fine. They comped bread and butter, which we ordered because the food was taking a long time. I felt like management should've adjusted our bill because of the pork chop and the long wait. We just got an apology. The host/manager explained the reason for the extremely long wait was because they were busy. I still tipped 20% because wait staff deserve every penny, Overall, not too happy about our experience. I know restaurants get busy, but if they can't handle the crowds and serve their food in a timely manner, they should make adjustments. Ambiance was nice, looked like people were enjoying themselves. SOO GOOD! Went there last night for dinner, got the veggie salad, filet mignon, and mushrooms and shared everything with my friend - we didn't have a single bad bite! Extra bonus points for the vinegar and sauces at the table. And the service was seriously top notch from both our server and all the other helper type servers. I came with my friend but would be a great date spot, kind of a vibe without being like a scene, just upscale enough for a nice dinner and/or drinks spot. I went here for the LA Restaurant Week prefix menu on a Friday night. I got seated quickly and service was prompt. The cocktail took a bit but the bar was visibly backed up. The cabbage baked in the embers was burnt tasting. The little gems salad was simple but pleasing. The biggest issue was the 30 minutes of dead space between the openers and the entree. I received apologies for the delay twice but, at that point a cocktail on the house might have been more appropriate. After building frustration over that period, it all quickly melted away after I tasted the salmon, flat iron steak, and Brussel sprouts. They were amazing. After walking by this place several times in the past, and smelling the meats cooking, I'm glad I finally made it inside. read more

They're known for their proteins -- the 28oz bone-in ribeye was cooked and seasoned well (8/10), with a cool tableside vinegar pour on a special platter for dipping. Sides were solid: broccolini (8/10), steak fries (8/10) which has a special seasoning and ketchup. Its been a while since we were here but we had to return for the legendary happy hour! We were in line by 5:15 on a Friday night which is important to snag a prime seat to watch the action and experience the best Happy Hour in LA.. And everything was just as good as we remembered it! The black midnight margaritas are just so amazing and delicious I could have enjoyed two more than I ordered. And we started with fresh Oysters that are better than Boston. The cabbage toast are so much better than they sound. This chef is incredibly innovative and can make something as mundane as cabbage taste wonderful. The lamb ribs that are smoked to perfection are just about the best I have had anywhere in my life. The steak and fries with steak that just melts in your mouth. Reservation for two. The restaurant was mostly empty, except for a full bar likely wrapping up happy hour, yet we were seated at a table barely big enough for children. After asking to move, it took 10 minutes of unnecessary back-and-forth, only to be placed at another small table awkwardly squeezed at the back of the room. I'm not spending serious money to eat a porterhouse, several cocktails, and multiple side orders at a 2x2 table like I'm in economy class. We left and went to a Michelin-star restaurant, where the service and respect for the guest matched the pricing. As a big fan of Citrin, I don't know why I didn't try Charcoal sooner--but I'm glad I finally did! In fact, I've been back twice in the last month. I love the casual yet mature and elegant vibe. The meat-centered menu, featuring a dry-aging display of beautiful steaks and duck by the bar, really whets the appetite. Their steaks and burgers are amazing, but we also go to Charcoal for their elevated wine and cocktail offerings and delightful starters, like the perfectly shucked oysters and grilled calamari with green beans and almonds. OMG the best meal I've had since we visited Manchego several months back. There wasn't an off note the entire service. Run, don't walk! The roasted wild mushrooms - parsley, fermented garlic dressing, breadcrumbs ,- were a tantalizing mix of textures and bracing flavor; a great way to begin. The houses signature cabbage "baked in the embers" - yogurt, sumac, lemon zest - put a spoon on an ages-old ingredient. The novelty had us chuckling with every bite. Coming 2 to an order, rather than the advertised 4, the smoked lamb ribs were more tender than I knew one could coax from the animal. Dismayingly impressive cookery. Also tender beyond belief, the 16 oz. Durham Ranch Bison Ribeye - coffee rub - was perfect when delivered and merely excellent as it cooled. Any preconceptions about bison brewing lean and dry are to be tossed away. Unavailable sadly was the 21-day aged half Liberty duck - honey, coriander - (due to some shenanigans in Sonoma). This was the first I came for, so I've got something to look forward to. Finishing up with a dessert of chocolate & peanut butter crunch cake - Mcconnell's double peanut butter chip ice cream - was a win for both the unexpected textures and deep chocolate flavor. Coffee, often marginal at even the best places, was lovingly attended to here. General manager Nadia Bohr runs a smooth shop, with a knowledgeable, friendly, and fun front-of-house. Had a small company dinner here back in August. It was the last meal together before returning back to our remote lives. My boss, the COO, joined us. We were blocked from entering because there was a critical mass of runners jogging down Washington Blvd, but we made it to the restaurant about 10 minutes late. We sat right away, and those who were blocked by the 2nd wave of runners finally got seated after 10 minutes. When our server came to greet us, she gave a little introduction to how everything works. We have some people in our group that have eaten here, but it was nice to have that information spread widely to all of us. As you may know this place does family style, which is my favorite way to dine. She mentioned that she was going to listen to all of our orders and make sure that we had the right amount of food for our table. There were 10 of us takingthis to heart, I started off with a couple of appetizers, including the cabbage which got rave reviews. The cabbage was really good on the inside. The outside was really charred as to be expected. We also ordered crab claws, oysters, bread and butter. All was fresh and flavorful. Our server told us that we had to order everything together, and the kitchen was going to course the dishes. The sounded great because it helped us make sure we felt comfortable to order at once. The server went around and wrote down everyone's orders and seemed confident that it was the right amount of food. When the food start coming out, it was a comically large number of large portions. Our team eats a lot. We are very well fed and know how to put the effort into an eating marathon. We ordered so much food that we only ate about a third of it. Instead of letting us know what we had to duplicates of and what we shouldn't be ordering multiples of, it all just came. There were duplicates of meats and duplicates of crab claws. I wish I had pictures, but the restaurant is on the dimly lit side, so I didn't even try to take photos of anything. The amount of food wasn't just a little bit extra; it was obscene. We talked about packing it up to take the leftovers as the new server came to take our plates. Remember how we still had 2/3 of the food left? The to go boxes never came. What started as a nice dinner to celebrate our accomplishments, turned into an exit parade of guilt-ridden diners. Minus one star because of a narcissistic patron that ruined our night. I wanted to write a review because I witnessed a disturbing event tonight and then saw the patron next to me writing a yelp review about it. I've been coming here for years and so have the patrons at the bar, and the person who claims the bartender was making everyone uncomfortable was not only lying, but she was making a scene at the bar and making everyone uncountable. The bartender simply told her she couldn't save seats at the bar during happy hour and she was just doing her job, and the woman had a conniption fit. The patron seemed intoxicated or on something stronger, and was trying to get the bar to gang up on the bartender. The people next to me even pulled the manager aside to say this woman was being insane. She's completely fabricated the story and is quite obviously trying to cause harm by slandering charcoal's general manager, food quality and bar staff just because she didn't get what she wanted. Typical LA entitled. Such a shame people have so little going on in their lives the feel the need to attempt to ruin someone else's, or act like they're above the rules and feel the need to ruin half the bar's night. read more

That Lady and I decided on trying something new and decided to try Charcoal in Marina Del Rey. Parking is challenging but with some luck we found some street parking. If you come on the first few hours the noise level is high. Seek a table far from the bar, if you wish conversation. Trust me when I say the food is more than worth it. The offerings stagger the mind and flavors stagger the plate. Rely on your server for guidance. Luckily we had Erika. This is the way food is supposed to taste. The appetizers taunt you, the salads open new vistas, the meats and sides seduce you with flavors and pleasure. The level of service is wonderful. Little things are noticed like cutlery rests, plate changes, plus a playing card used to redeem your doggie bag upon leaving. Solid wine list. Expert bartenders that bring artistry to cocktails. I really wanted to like this restaurant but I'm writing this review to help the community steer clear. The service 10/10, impeccable! The food was nothing special especially for the price point. Overall, the whole dinner lacked passion. Took my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner and was so disappointed. We tried the Dine LA menu which was a killer deal and we were told the menu is more like a tasting, you get so many different things to try in smaller portions but each item sucked. The only amazing dish we got that made us excited and satisfied was the hamachi starter. The cabbage that I hear so much about was not it. The texture and flavor left us disappointed. The wings were good but dry. The salad was nothing special. Honestly nothing felt special. The salmon was great and soft and tasted phenomenal but the steak was so bad, so chewy and way too raw to enjoy. I left mine on the plate and just ate a few bites, so sick of chewing it and that really let me down. The desert should have been more pie but it tasted like peaches cooked with granola/oatmeal flakes on top. It wasn't the worst but I wouldn't have it again. It took so long to come out we almost just left the restaurant without it. We were so done with the whole experience. Save your time and money and take it to Casa 12 down the block, that place has passion and delicious food that is worth every penny! 4.5 stars! This is not your typical steakhouse as it's more of restaurant with a twist of Venice. Although there's a new location in West Hollywood, we decided to go to the original in Venice instead. It's a simple looking restaurant in ambiance and not much of a scene but the food was extremely good! No valet parking so make sure to have ample time to park. We got the arugula and radicchio salad to start and it was so crisp and flavorful, I really loved it. We then got the bison ribeye. I was skeptical to order it since bison is a little more gamey but it was delicious. We got the wild mushroom and broccolini sides and they were both amazing. Everything we had was beyond great. I would try another cut of beef next time or even a fish dish. On the table were 3 different sauces: bbq, steak and chimmichurri. I loved the chimmichurri. There was also an olive oil that was infused which was also really good. Although the food was very very good, there's nothing that's making me go back to this restaurant unless a friend really wanted to go. There was something missing for me and that's why it's a 4.5. I think it was the lack of ambiance and crowd. Still if you're in the neighborhood and want a steak dinner go here...it's just not a very sexy place. read more

Host issues. I discovered this place through Eater Magazine and had high hopes based on the journalist's recommendation. When I arrived, I asked the hostess (black hair tied back, white sleeveless top) if I could order food from the happy hour menu at the bar. She pointed at the bar, and I walked over. There were no open seats. Okay, I guess I'll just awkwardly stand in the middle of this sit-down restaurant while I wait for a chair to open up. This system is fine, I suppose, but I would have preferred if guests at least got to sit in a waiting area until a spot became available. It would have been different if the bar was its own separate area where there was room to casually mill about, but I did not enjoy standing in the walkway waiting for a seat and getting in the way of servers hurrying between the dining room and kitchen. Additionally, I understand that these technicalities may be caused by the restaurant currently being under construction, but it was not good hospitality that the hostess did not explain to me how the bar seating worked. I also understand everyone has bad days, but the host was not amiable. I work in the restaurant industry; if I talked to customers they way she talked to me, my manager would tell me to change my tone. On the bright side, my server/bartender (dark hair in a top bun, arm tattoos, heavier makeup) was perfect. She was welcoming, attentive, and timely. The food was tasty and fairly priced. However, even when construction is completed, I'll be taking my business to an establishment with better customer service. I wouldn't recommend Charcoal Venice. read more

Cabbage was nice, but did not "wow" me as it had no texture with cream sauce. - Mains were mediocre, I expected more smokey taste. Nothing special. - Sides were terrible. They were all too sweet, and they didnt give us the whipped potatoes. After paying and leaving the restaurant, I noticed that whipped potatoes were missing as I was walking out of the restaurant and seeing potatoes on other tables. I addressed it to the hostess as I was picking up my to-go leftovers and she told me "well thats something that you should have let your server know." This response was unacceptable. The restaurant serves comfort foods in a family-style way. The ambiance and vibe are very relaxing and chill. The waitstaff is very quick, efficient, and extremely friendly. Hubby and I went here because we saw it on one of our favorite shows, Insecure. We love steak so we were excited to finally make it here. We had a dinner reservation and when we arrived, we were sat right away. For starters, we had oysters and drinks. For our main, hubby went for the 48oz certified angus beef porterhouse and I went with prime skirt steak. In addition, we got sides for the table. Our food arrived hot and ready. Every bite was amazingly delicious. Both hubby and I could not put our forks down. We enjoyed every single bite! After dinner, I had to order dessert and a cappuccino. We went with Yuzu Curd. I have to be honest, I really had no idea what it was but I ordered it anyways. Haha. I'm glad I did because it was scrumptious! Even hubby got into it! Shout out to Chuy! He is one of the managers there and came over to our table because he recognized someone at our table from a DIFFERENT restaurant he worked at YEARS AGO. It was so crazy!! He really remembers faces. Anyway, the food was all excellent. I would recommend the cabbage starter, broccolini, skirt steak, chicken wings. Honestly the thing that blew me away the most was the SALAD! The arugula and Asian pear salad was incredible!!! You can't go wrong. Excellent service too! Overall: 3.8/5 (dine in) Half Dozen Oysters ($20): I didn't eat any since it looked very wet & slimy. My husband said he had better so you can skip the oysters here. Smoked Lamb Ribs (4 for $19.25): Lamb is really hard to cook. Unfortunately, Charcoal didn't execute as well as we hoped. The flavors were okay and didn't hid the lamb gamey taste well. DineLA Lunch ($35): The real reason why we came here. - Charcoal Crab Benedict: I was craving egg Benedict and this place had a black hollandaise sauce so I had to try it. You don't really taste the charcoal so it's mostly for looks. The crab was really fresh so eat it right away and don't let it get cold. - Cheddar Buttermilk Biscuit: Wow, this is way better than KFC's biscuits! The biscuit is warm, fresh, crispy on the outside, & soft on the inside. It melts once it hits your mouth and can be eaten alone or with a bit of butter. The pepper honey glaze threw me off a bit but it works & gives you a nice subtle flavor. - Smokey Grilled Chicken Wings: This came with 2 wings. They were dry and kinda tasteless. The oregano, chili, vinegar marinade didn't come through but you do get some of the smokiness. Midnight Margarita ($16): This was beautiful presented. She came out in all black with a black salt rim. The tequila based drink was really strong & good but funny enough, it didn't get me buzzed. Smoke & Fire ($16): This is Mescal based. It was also pretty good and just as strong as the midnight margarita. There wasn't a strong kick from the chili though. Kitchen Appreciation (2.5%): Interesting that they add this on but note you can have it removed upon request. But really are you going to remove it & risk looking like a cheapo? They didnt have any table available for one person, so I went to the bar. The place has a earthy laid back vibe. The menu was quite posh. I wanted a drink and some food to nibble on but their options are more like if you have a date or are out at a dinner party. I ordered the chopped salad and there are no substitutions but they will remove an ingredient for you. It had all the menu ingredients plus some extra veggies: green beans, okra and cucumber. I cant stand okra so it was not a pleasant surprise butttt the restaurant should list all ingredients in their dishes. . . The bartender was nice, he had a pony tail and made a delicious gin with Cucumber and lime ... it was $17 though‍ All that to say, I visited, I tasted and thats all folks! read more

The "ember fired cabbage" was boiled. Wayyyyy overboiled. Grey like your grandmother's cabbage from the 50s with the outer leaves burnt. How a chef could be proud to send this out I have no idea. Cabbage done right can be a startling piece de resistance, look only at how Francis Mallman does his cabbage over the open flame. Good cabbage requires TIME, and all the corners were cut here to devastating effect. In fact, I came here years ago when Charcoal first opened and the cabbage was fantastic, how this place has degraded over the years. Yogurt sauce was fine. The burger was mid. Too much acidity, nothing terribly special about it. You can get a better burger at Brizio at this price point, and a comparable or marginally better burger at Hinano's down the street for half the price. Got the Peach and blueberry crumble for dessert. Both fruits were out of season, and delivered nothing beyond the taste of the spices involved. Largely a disappointment. Drinks were good.
