Eek. I just joined Yelp, just to share this. Don't eat at Chap's. Save half of your money and walk across the street to Dunkin'. It'll be more satisfying. I've lived in New Haven since August, and I walk by Chap's on my way to school every day. Thought about trying it a while ago, but after some unfortunate other Yelp reviews, I decided not to. Until I got desperate today. I wish I'd stuck with it. I woke up with a serious hankering for eggs benedict. I tried all of my usual favorite places, but they were either closed or the item had been removed or never existed. After walking around, hungry and slightly hungover, for about 20 minutes, trying to use my phone to find somewhere open with benedict or florentine in my general vicinity, I caved and decided to check Chap's. Sure enough, they had eggs benedict on the menu. When I walked in, the restaurant was empty, even though it was 10am and had been open since 7. That should have tipped me off. I looked at the two people in the front, a brother-sister duo (?), and they looked at me confused. "What would you like?" "Umm... can I sit down?" I asked as I gestured vaguely at the empty restaurant. "Just one?" (*see note) He seated me at the table I'd vaguely waved my hand at and left me with a menu. I already knew what I wanted, but I checked for a drink I might be interested in. Negative, apparently it's all bottled beverages and convenience store coffee. So, when he came back, I placed my order for eggs florentine (the veggie-lovers benedict) and asked for some water to drink. A few minutes later the waitress came over and told me they didn't have english muffins and asked if I'd like another kind of bread. I was seriously considering just leaving at this point, but I still really wanted eggs benedict, and I didn't want to have to try again to track down somewhere else that would serve it. So after a moment, I asked her what my other options were. "Umm, any kind of bread..." Really? Cause you just said you don't have english muffins, so CLEARLY not "any." Let's try this again. "What kinds of bread do you have?" "Uhh... wheat, white, rye..." (Yup, so many options) "Okay. Wheat, I guess." At some point during this time, a group of four came in and sat on the other side of the small restaurant. They decided to order drinks, and a carafe of water and glasses were brought to their table. And I continued to wait. Then they got their other drinks and ordered food. And I was still parched. Finally I waved down the waitress (not easy, because checking on their customers is apparently not something they do) and asked again for some water. Water should not be something that needs to be ordered. I understand that some places prefer to save energy by only giving water on request. I can accept that. But I should never have to ask twice, especially when I was the first one there, the other table already got water, and the wait staff was just standing idly around anyway. Drink a cup of your generic coffee and wake up! As I waited for my food, several other groups of people walked in. I wanted to yell at them and tell them to turn and leave before it was too late. But I didn't want to make a scene, and I thought that even though the service was crap, maybe the food would be good. Oh, optimism. You always lead to disappointment. When my food came out, my mistake was really hammered home. The wheat toast had for some reason been flattened and cut into a circle shape, perhaps to make me forget it wasn't an english muffin? I don't know. The spinach appeared to be defrosted frozen spinach, and the "hollandaise" was definitely not right. I suspect store bought and packed with preservatives for long term storage. It may not even have had egg in it. The consistency was definitely off - it looked like colored water thickened with flour or cornstarch. Yech. The homefries on the side (not mentioned on the menu) were horribly bland, and everything had an overpowering black pepper taste, like frozen meals trying to distract from the taste of their preservatives. The one upside of the whole meal was that the eggs were poached well. I quickly finished what I wanted of the meal (two bites of the fries was enough) because by that point I was starving, and tried to flag someone down for a bill. Unconvinced that that would ever be successful, I finally just walked up to the register and got out as quickly as possible. And stopped across the street at Dunkin' Donuts for a bagel. *Side note. At some point, perhaps as a child going to a favorite California mini-chain, or perhaps during my waitressing days, I was taught to never, ever ask that question. The alternatives I was taught didn't really seem that much better, to be honest, but "just one?" sounds so judgmental. I don't really care about this, but it was something else I noticed. read more

I have been to Chaps several times since I've moved to new haven and always have a great experience. The reason I love this restaurant is because they are the only restaurant that I know of downtown that serves breakfast all day. My favorite is their Stuffed French toast, with fresh fruit served Inbetween to pieces of French toast with cream cheese. If I'm in a hurry I grab a fresh baked bagel sandwich, with bacon, egg and cheese for only $4. Last week they had a special with chocolate and banana pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon side for $8, my parents enjoyed it very much. For lunch my favorite is the new haven cheese steak with onions, peppers, and mushrooms, or one of their panini's. I like the lunch menu because there is a choice of vegetarian items along with the burgers, gyros and sandwiches. The service is always pleasant and quick, the waitstaff is always upbeat and efficient. I plan on eating at chaps this weekend, and have recommended it to several friends. read more

Ordered the Black and Blue Burger, looking forward to the "crumbled bleu cheese" topping, as it is described on their menu. Instead there was just a pathetic smear of blue cheese salad dressing on the soggy bun. The burger itself was good though, Ordered 2 bottles of 0-calorie flavored water (peach and watermelon). They brought me orange and fruit punch Vitamin Water instead (120 calories/bottle) . Not a fan of this place. read more

A modestly-sized, unassuming restaurant tucked in between Pad Thai and Est Est Est Pizza on Chapel Street, Chap's Grille serves your favorite pizza, pasta, salads, wings, subs and more, or so they advertise. They essentially serve classic American dishes. Sitting down for brunch, the environment was relatively pleasant - the tables were clean and looked after and the decoration was understated. Our waitress was very nice and helpful (she even recommended my friend, Kyle, the famous Avocado Omelets, which we later would question as to who called them famous). I ordered the Eggs Benedict. After we ordered it was only a short five to ten minute wait before our food arrived. The presentation of the food was excellent - it looked quite delicious and everything was carefully placed on the plate. Yet, the tastes I experienced left a lot to be desired. First off, the food was lukewarm at best. The potatoes, the eggs and the English muffins - all of them were more cold than hot - like they had been sitting out for half an hour. The eggs were mushier than I would have liked and had they been less bland, this might have been forgivable. The English muffin was tougher than I would have liked. The only redeeming parts of the plate were the potatoes, which despite their dryness were quite tasty and crisp on the outside. In all, I would have been able to recommend this restaurant for its the pleasant ambiance and nice service if it weren't for its unreasonably high price tag. In our four-person group, we each ordered one dish and one drink, which we split four ways. With a modest tip, the price came out to $14, much too high for me to even recommend going out to try it once. Perhaps Chap's Grille serves your favorite food, but they don't serve it that well - in the end, I left $14 poorer and doubting whether I liked Egg's Benedict, one of my fail-safe, go-to dishes. read more

I used to order from here very often, because they served Boar's Head meats, slightly better than what you can usually get from delivery. However, I stopped ordering from them altogether about 3 years ago, because they really fell off. Delivering partial orders, always out of many menu items, delivering an hour late, being rude. At first, I wrote it off as a "bad day" but after experiencing this for a couple months, I just stopped going to them. I haven't ordered from there in a long time, so I don't know if things have changed, but I would not recommend. read more

I had a horrible experience last night with Chap's Grille: I ordered my Fresh Mozzarella, Roma Tomato and Basil salad, had it delivered, and found that it was completely void of any basil at all whatsoever. When I called to let them know, they said "I'm sorry we don't have any basil today but your next salad will be free but tonight we can't do anything about it." This was a full 1/2 hour before they "close" and they refused any kind of credit or any kind of confirmation that I would receive said salad. Flabbergasted, the call disconnected. I called back and said that this was unacceptable. To which the manager got on the phone and told me that "Roma Tomato" meant romaine lettuce and that the basil was actually in the basil dressing. There was no basil dressing: it was Balsamic Vinaigrette. When he insisted that I was wrong I reminded him that if the menu was incorrect it was not my fault and they had the phone number where they could reach me if there was an issue with my order (which they used when they delivered). The manager at that point started yelling at me and told me that if I was unhappy with my order I could come down with my salad and get my money back. Which is exactly what I did. And as soon as I walked in the door, the manager started yelling at me, and tried to tell me that I was wrong, once again. Then he looked at my salad and realized there was no basil dressing on my salad. After much insistence that I was wrong and the manager deciding that I needed to wait so he could prove to me that there was some fleck of basil somewhere in my salad I asked to leave with my money, which he finally did. However he refused to return the delivery tip or even acknowledge that they had made an error and told me that he had never had a customer as unbelievable as me. I have never been treated with such disrespect as a patron of any establishment so I will never, ever go back. And it's a shame, because this easily could have been resolved with a simple phone call. read more

This small neighborhood restaurant specializes in breakfast all day long, but also serves exceptional Mediterranean food in serious portions, fresh and beautifully served! I was shocked by the one poor review about a bad delivery, because every time I eat here I'm more impressed! Our party of 5 ate a beautiful array of foods from waffles (13 year old niece) to a full Mediterranean platter with baba ganush, hummus, pita bread, super fresh salad lightly dressed, and stuffed grape leaves plus tabbouli. The food is truly outstanding, and very fresh. We took home several boxes full as well. I can't recommend them highly enough: they deserve at least an extra star! And the value was also exceptional -- super fair pricing! GO...you'll be glad you did!! read more

The place is overpriced and the service is bad. We spent nearly an hour waiting!! There was only one guy working there. While we were waiting, he brought to us clod tea!! And we waited almost 15 minutes to have our plates, which have nothing special for the price!! And our cold tea became iced tea just for waiting!! Definitely not recommend it. read more

We ordered delivery for my office. Not only did they tell us it would take over an hour to get here, they were 40 minutes late. Everything was soggy and cold. The food would have been okay at best if it were fresh. Not only was the food bad, and very late, we called twice to find out where the delivery was and we were hung up on TWICE. The unfriendly staff is serving uninspired, greasy food in the midst of a mess of noisy refrigerators, a blurring TV set, and Chap's grill regulars. The unfriendliness turned into blunt rudeness, when I discovered that the numbers on the bill were rough approximations of the ones displayed on the menu and the total didn't quite add up. Avoid it unless you like to be mistreated and cheated. read more

I work in the area and Chaps is a go-to for me! They have great burgers, and fries. I would only caution that you ask for your bacon well-done. Once, I got a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and the bacon was stringy. That was the only negative experience I've had there though, and I've eaten there many times. I love their breakfast! I get the omelettes. They come with home fries (cooked to perfection with onions and peppers), and toast. He will also throw a couple pieces of melon in there. It's lovely! read more

this is the grossest, most unsatisfying meal i've ever had in my whole life (no joke!) on two separate occasions, topped off with abysmal service. first time we went, my boyfriend and i ordered the same thing and they brought us ONE order of the meal instead of one for each of us. food took forever to come even though we were the only people in the whole restaurant and we didn't have time for them to make a new one so we had to just share. honestly, who looks at a couple (one person in which is a huge athletic boy) and figures they will be splitting an omelet on a saturday morning? this time, i ordered the eggs florentine. to any normal person, that means a pile of cooked spinach on top of a toasted english muffin with poached eggs and hollandaise. what i received was an untoasted english muffin topped with raw mesclun mix salad greens and two poached eggs, which were so undercooked that not just the yolk was raw/runny, but the whites too. i know that some people enjoy very runny yolks, but i'm not even sure that it's safe or sanitary to serve raw egg whites. i told the waitress that the menu stated that it would be spinach, and she informed me that there are some spinach leaves included in the salad mix. "So, it's not JUST lettuce," she said. my boyfriend ordered bacon this time, and it was unrecognizable as bacon or any meat in general. it seriously looked and smelled like someone had fried and served cat vomit. Not only will I NEVER return to Chaps in my life, but I have told numerous friends, Yale classmates, room mates, and even just acquaintances that Chaps is an over-priced, undercooked, rude, and frankly unsanitary establishment. they have all agreed, most mentioned similar experiences, and we all promise to spread the word in order to hopefully run Chaps off of our campus. read more

I used to eat here a fair bit -- always breakfast, almost always the stuffed french toast. Was a treat and relatively inexpensive for a sit-down breakfast out. The coffee varied in quality but was usually good (what you'd find in a diner, not an upscale hipster place). Service definitely also varied in quality. For what it is, it's totally fine, and it fills a need for less expensive breakfast places. We also never had to wait to be seated, which is huge in my opinion. Have eaten here several times for lunch and love the food and service. I have always felt like family, and the prices are quite reasonable! Today I had them cater a lunch for 15, and it was fabulous! Lovingly prepared with fresh ingredients. Specially recommended: all their Middle Eastern cuisine, especially the lamb, falafel/hummus wrap, and babaganoush, and their fries. YUM. read more

This place used to be amazing, but I think it's since come under new management. The service was poor and unnecessarily slow. Breakfast was so-so at best-- eggs were burnt, potatoes came out mushy, and the vegetables in the omelette were chopped in huge uneven pieces-- definitely not restaurant quality, especially for what we paid. Horrible..and I never complain..never again. I want my money back. I ordered the sampler..I usually don't order stuff like this I was just in a sampler platter kind of mood though. It came with chicken tenders, which were the only thing I ate (plain, because they didn't give me sauce) "hot wings" that were horrendous..bland and fatty and the sauce they gave me was watered down or something. Mozzarella sticks that were okay, but again, weirdly watered down sauce..watery cheap marinara..then lastly "nachos" which apparently means plain burnt tortilla chips with a side of some really awful salsa. All this cost me 13 dollars and it was the worst food I've ever ordered. My friend got a steak and cheese sub..it had some weird lettuce on it..and he said it was just okay..everything cost 29 dollars..that's with a 6dollar tip. My gross food is sitting on my counter barely touched. I will never order from here again. They already have more of my money than they deserve. Chaps Grille has excellent food and service. It gets crazy busy on the weekends so if you would like it to be a more relaxed setting, stop in during the week! Great breakfast food in the downtown new haven area! :) read more

Just happened by this place since our first choice was closed. I have to say, what a treat! My husband got wings and they were deep fried and super crunchy. Then, he got the fajita pita and said it was good. I got the vegetarian combo platter and was delighted to say the least. The chef makes the hummus and falafel on site. It was without a doubt some of the best I've ever had. I was stuffed after eating that and the small baby greens salad, so I took home the stuffed grape leaves and baba gannouj. Can't wait to dig in! Oh, and I ordered an extra hummus to bring to a dinner party! read more

Food was good, but service sucked. The cook was very friendly and informative. The owner(?) which was also the server brought us water initially, but never offered to refill out glasses. He wasn't very friendly. He could have made much more of an effort to make us feel like he cared. read more

have been a customer of this place for 4 years, and while the food is mediocre, at best, the location has always been convenient and the menu pretty comprehensive. However, today will be the LAST day I will deal with this establishment. Ordered food via campus food and was told the wait was 60 minutes. Now I'm a patient person. But when I called after 60 minutes and was told 5 more minutes, and then another 20 minutes passed, I was pretty frustrated. When I called Chaps again, they assured me that my food was just 5 minutes away and seemed annoyed at my concern that my food might no longer be hot. A total of 120 minutes (2 hours) after ordering, my food arrived. A cold coffee half-spilled, cold stuck-together pancakes with spilled congealed butter and NO SYRUP, cold eggs, and a cold "healthy" bagel slathered in butter. When I called to complain, the lady on the phone lied, told me she was the manager (I later discovered she was not), tried to blame the cold food on campusfood, and refused to issue any refund, just before hanging up on me.
