Best ramen in DC! Don't be fooled by the quirky Charlie Chaplin decor, the ramen delivers and even prefer over Daikaya. I was impressed by the wide selection of vegan/vegetarian broth: Shio (salt) vs Shoyu (soy sauce based) and Tan Tan Men ramen (seaweed). I'm glad that I ventured out and got the Tan Tan Men ramen vegetarian style. The classic ramen is pretty meaty with different cuts of pork with multiple broths to choose from. The Tan Tan Men ramen is bursting with flavor with rich broth from the sesame oil and miso, chewy noodles, and loaded up with veggies (napa, scallions, carrots, bean sprouts, onions, bok choy). I paid a little extra to add bamboo shoots - totally worth it! The ramen bowl hit on all cylinders. My husband enjoyed the Miso Ramen with flavorful broth and tender marinated pork belly. The fried Veggie Dumplings were delicious and tasted like spring rolls. Great for sharing! I LOVED the Dogs Life Cocktail which packs a punch with Teeling small batch whiskey ($40/bottle), walnut bitters, honey, lemon, prosecco, and an smoked apple ice cube. The ingredients blended so well together that I got another round. My husband enjoyed the Trollop with rye and single malt, apricot liquor, and bitters. It smelled and tasted like a Manhattan. The table next to us got The Lazaretto in which the waitress seared the pork belly with a blow torch, so the fat melted into the drink. So cool to watch! Sadly a vegetarian version is impossible. To top off an excellent meal, we sat right across the big screen and watched Charlie Chaplin's silent films. Entertaining - although not sure of the connection to ramen. As Chaplin's used to be just a cocktail bar that expanded to a ramen bar, it still has that lounge vibe. Oh man! I have mixed feelings on Chaplin's (probably as a side effect of what I ordered). Still, I'm getting ahead of myself. I dropped by Chaplin's with some girlfriends this past weekend, ready to gorge myself on cocktails and amazing food. I didn't have quite the incredible experience that I wanted, but it was still pretty damn good. The food (+ the cocktails): The DRINKS. The drinks are genuinely incredibly, and are definitely fairly priced. We ordered the Cure, which everyone raves about - and for good reason! The Cure was the perfect blend of fruity and bubbly, and a server burnt off the stick of rosemary when she brought it to the table (so it makes for a great Insta story too!). We also ordered the Daisy Duke, which was like the world's best frozen slushy. It was also super fruity and STRONG. Be prepared if you're about to order this Frozen Snow Monkey. The food was a little more disappointing, at least for me. Don't get me wrong - it was good! I ordered the chicken katsu, which came perfectly crisped and dripping oil. I also really liked the potato balls (described as potato salad on the menu). Still, I was bummed that there wasn't any rice to go with it, which would have helped soak up the curry. Granted, this is probably my fault (I should have asked), but I just assumed that any curry dish would come with rice. Lessons learned, lessons learned... The service: I'm pretty meh about the service - it was nothing outstanding, nothing terribly bad. All in all, the service was an okay experience. TLDR: Drinks = amazing; food = pretty good (next time, I'll try the ramen!). Ambiance: industrial esque, underground, and LOUD. It has all of the important properties of a great ramen place in DC Food: ordered the fried wontons to start. They were absolutely delicious and had the perfect amount of crispness. I ordered the Chaplin A.S.S.which was actually super spicy but delicious. It had a lot of chicken in it and the coconut milk made for an interesting flavored broth. I would definitely order this dish again. The regular A.S.S. I tried had more of a sesame seed flavor and was also delicious. Drinks: we went with the Tokyo tea as it was getting super crowded and hot in the restaurant. It was a pineapple based frozen drink with 4 different liquors and that you could barely taste. Dangerous, but delicious. Service: this is where Chaplin's falls short. After making reservations for a birthday dinner about two months ago and arriving on time, we were seated by the upstairs bar on high top tables literally inches from the two couples next to us. It was so loud up there that I almost lost my voice having simple conversation. The server could barely make it between the tables to deliver our drinks and get our orders. Upon asking if there's any possibility to switch tables, the host dismissed me with a simple "no that's it." We tried to deal with the absolutely atrocious spot in the restaurant but I ended up asking another host to please assist with a less cramped seating arrangement. Within 5-10 minutes, our new table was ready. Oh my goodness it made the world of a difference. While Chaplin's does have great ramen, the service was just not up to par. The place is popular and seems to usually be busy, but some of the staff need to give themselves reminders of the importance of adhering to a high caliber of customer service. read more

This is one of our favorite ramen restaurants in the DC area. My friend was suffering from a cold so the first thing that came to our mind was Chaplin's A.S.S spicy ramen. We have had this many times and this absolutely helps clear our sinuses. A.S.S ramen has some of our favorite flavors such as coconut milk, hot peppers, chicken broth and loads of ramen. I usually substitute chicken with pork strips and add an egg and pork belly to my ramen. My friend sticks with the regular A.S.S ramen but since he can't handle the heat so he gets a milder version. Price is nominal for the ramen but it may get a little expensive as you add more to it. Ambiance is great and absolutely love the service. They are pretty packed during peak hours so I would recommend to get a reservation before you go there or if you are comfortable sitting at the bar area then you can do that as well but they serve first cum first serve in the bar area. read more

Arrived on a surprisingly beautiful Saturday evening in April around 5pm and asked to be seated on the crowded patio. Our group of three were quickly seated and notified of the happy hour drink specials. We ordered drinks and some apps and enjoyed the weather, the service and wonderful conversation brought on by a perfect setting. We finished up our visit with some ramen and left happy and full. Probably my favorite Ramen in the city -- I still have a few places to try but this is in comparison to Reren, Daikaya, Haikan, and others. The Chaplin A.S.S. in particular is the perfect blend of spice and flavor; I'd give it an easy 9.5/10. The dumplings and chicken karage were also fantastic, but it's been a couple months and I don't quite remember enough to rate them fairly. The booze-injected dumplings were a fun experience (they inject them right in front of you) but flavor wise they were pretty gross. Wait staff was also polite and prompt, and the food came out FAST--15 minutes tops. The bad: the ramen didn't live up to my expectations of "ramen." I ordered the Chaplin, which is described as a tonkotsu broth. It was more bean sprout than noodle, and the broth barely had any flavor. There's many ramen options, salads, dumplings (drunken dumplings for adults too), and dessert options like cashew butter mousse for the sweet tooth. I didn't order a drink but they looked delicious. There's an extensive menu for cocktails, beer, bubbles, and wine. I really enjoyed my ramen and added corn and tofu and could barely finish it despite ordering the small. Chaplins was recommended to me by a coworker who previously lived in the DC area. I'm glad I went. The food was excellent, the Veggie Shio ramen was rich with a toasty sesame flavor but light enough to enjoy thoroughly. I also ordered the veggie wonton appetizer, which was good, though not very complex in flavor (nonetheless it was still fried vegetarian greatness, I would probably just try a different appetizer on another visit). It's worth noting here that Chaplin's has plenty of options for vegetarians. Chaplin's is very cozy, welcoming, and I noticed several conversations amongst strangers opening up at the bar. It's a place where you can laugh loud, get engrossed in a conversation, just people watch, or do all of the above. Our waitress was fast, attentive, and friendly, though I think she could have used a hand, as it appeared she was manning all of the tables at the restaurant on this Sunday night. Chaplin's completely ambushed me with flavor! I'll admit, I wasn't expecting too much from an establishment that didn't have any Japanese decor. How can a place repping Charlie Chaplin possibly have good ramen? Well they do! The Stamina Spicy's broth was on point. One thing I hate is when I pay $13 or more for ramen with broth that is too delicate. I don't want my noodles and meat to swim in hotdog water! The Chaplin A.S.S. draws its style from Thai coconut curry. While it is good, I much prefer going to an actual Thai restaurant that specialize in Thai noodle soups. In conclusion, Chaplin's truly surprised me in the quality of their ramen. Along with Daikaya, Sakuramen, and Jinya, Chaplin's definitely deserves a seat in best ramen in DC! read more

I had made a reservation and gotten there early, still had to wait 20 mins past my time to be seated. Even though I ate solo, the attentiveness was not there and when ordering, I ordered four dishes for myself, the waiter was questioning whether it's for me. Sir, let me be happy and order, and eat in peace. When the food came, the tan tan men was the best thing, the A.S.S. Noodles was not spicy nor sour, it was overwhelming with sodium which was the biggest downfall of the experience. I also did not enjoy the green tea ice cream, didn't taste like green tea ice cream. One comment which is an unpopular opinion to the owners, learn how to scoop ice cream, if one gives a half ass scoop and considers it a scoop; don't even bother calling it a scoop or put it on the menu. I lived in a place during graduate school which had a large Asian population and was also cold 8 months of the year, so needless to say, I've had excellent Ramen. Since I've left, I hadn't found a place with broth as heavenly and as layered as that place. But Chaplin's has made me fall madly in love with good ramen all over again! I had the Veggie Shiro broth and the ingredients combined made the dish SING. I added nori, ginger and a habanero sauce to the side to add in some heat. Everything was fresh and divine. Looking back, I probably would add I would just note a few things: there is no white/red onion, the only onion they have is scallions (which they also shave down to the white part of the green onion...maybe in order to cut down on the overpowering taste of onion?). My waiter was so inattentive so I had to flag her down a few times, which was annoying. I had the drink called "A Day's Pleasure." And I get why it was called that, because it is boozy as fuck! Didn't realize rye was so strong. The guy seated at the next table over raved about the Matcha Long Island. Oh and the decor! I really can appreciate any place that has nice decor. Loved the all black appliances in the restrooms and the fact that the wallpaper was music notes. They also lit some Rosemary while I was in and I thought that the sage scent wafting through the air was magical. I will admit that I was skeptical that delicious ramen could come out of a restaurant named Chaplin's & I will also admit that I was very wrong. I was going to go to JINYA but ended up at Chaplin's because I had a bigger group and wanted to make a reservation. I had the Chaplin (Pork belly chashu, stamina egg, scallions, bean sprouts, black sesame paste, tonkotsu) - ah, where do I start?! First, I've never had black sesame in a savory format like this but I loved it. It added a rich, nuttiness that really rounded out flavors. It also made for great presentation. The broth was really well-developed, but not too oily and rich. I also like that the noodles weren't too thick or thin. Lastly, what MADE the experience for me was the hot sauce. It's a house-made habanero that they use for the Stamina Spicy. Packs a punch, but is delicious! Read my review for JINYA, but damn Chaplin's knocked 'em out. I also loved that Chaplin's has Delerium Red on tap! I've never seen that before; I've only had it out of the bottle. During HH, Red is only $6 (as opposed to $12). Woo. My boss, client and I came to Chaplin's one late night after our event in DC. My boss was telling us this was her go-to for late night meals/drinks. She talked it up a bit much. LOCATION: We were sat at a table at the end of the restaurant next to a window. I was a little upset because the fun vibe was happening by the bar.
