Came here on a Thursday night to grab some ramen. They only offered patio seating at the time and we had 8 people. Even though it was busy, they were able to seat us within a few minutes by pushing tables together. Some of us in the group forgot masks, but the hostess was kind enough to go grab some for us! We all ordered cocktails which came out right away. I ordered the regular Chaplin ramen which is a tonkotsu based broth, soft boiled egg, and pork belly. I thought it was delicious! I also got to try the Chaplin A.S.S., which I know my friends were not too fond of because the coconut flavor is overpowering. I enjoyed the spiciness of the Chaplin A.S.S. One of the best ramen places in DC- where you can also get an incredible cocktail. Don't be fooled that it's a ramen house- this place is a VIBE with a speakeasy-esq vibe and great decor. Staff (especially the manager) are great! Service is quick and we have never had issues with food allergies when we've had our GF friend come with us. Chaplin's is one of my favorite happy hours in DC. During happy hour (4-7pm), their cocktails are half off and are all incredibly delicious. My favorites are The Cure and The Vagabond. This place is as good as craft cocktail only places, but with awesome food. 2. Food - Asian and amazing Ramen? THE BEST. There are places with great ramen, yes, I know. Why are they special? Their namesake ramen has black squid ink and its taste is totally unique. Their spicy ramen has just enough heat and kick, but not so much it overpowers. The balance and its unique taste is wow. You just have to try to know it. Bao buns- good, but not the best I had tried, but still the best in DC Chicken kara age (deep fried in case you don't speak Japanese) - nothing special. regretted getting fried chicken in a place like this 3. It's ramen season y'all! Grateful that a worker of mine recommended Chaplin's because it was everything I could ever imagine and then some! The restaurant is not far from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. As soon as you enter, they have a popcorn machine available to munch on while you wait for a table. There's also a glass of dog treats for the fuzzy ones. The two leveled restaurant had a theatrical 1930's feel to it! The second floor had a projection screen playing black and white Charlie Chaplin movies. When I opened the menu, I wanted to order everything! I read about the Whiskey pork goyza but opted to try the fried chicken and shrimp shumai for starters. I normally get the steamed version but the fried had a nice crunch to it. The server recommended the Chaplin A.S.S. and it was delicious! Creamy, flavorful, and glorious are the words to describe it. The ramen had a little kick to it with the red peppers but the bowl was out of this world. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the broth hit the spot. Kudos to the noodle texture tasted like actual Chinese ramen (hand-pulled noodle) instead of the ones made by machines. However, it wasn't spicy for me, and soup was somewhat too salty for my tastebud. Would be even better if some cabbage was added. I was very happy with my order - the peanut based broth was rich and the noodles had a great consistency. I added eggs, soft tofu, nori and bamboo shoots. It was worth the money spent - I like their marinated eggs but it does not come in the base tan tan men... boo. My friends ordered gyoza that were nicely fried that were really good. They have Ichiban on draft, and I enjoyed a pint. I have to say that the neighborhood has changed so much since I was living in DC that when I initially saw the location I was hesitant - the area is quite different now. I took my wife there for her birthday, and we were almost ready to leave right away. She was excited to try the pho bowl, which is supposedly their specialty, but it was a letdown. The menu only offered about five options for pho, far fewer than we expected. We ended up ordering three appetizers and one drink each before deciding to leave. While we love a good vibe, the atmosphere was just okay--not enough to make us want to stay for another drink. Based on the Instagram photos, we thought it would be a different experience altogether. This place had good reviews so I wanted to see it for myself. We came for lunch and had made reservations on Open Table but it wasn't really necessary as there were a good amount of tables available. Most people stay outside but we chose to sit inside. The theme is kind of weird and didn't make any sense but so does many restaurants. The size of my mojito and the deliciousness was worth the $14 for the drink. Our sever disappeared on us and then the owner's brother took care of us at the end but overall service was good as well. The bathroom was disgusting but I think it was under construction and looked to be the only single restroom for all customers. If you zoom in the wall paper is peeling on the Chaplin mural. Chaplin's has been on my list since I moved here and I finally visited for the first time 3 weeks ago and have since been back twice (because they are that good)! For starters, the ramen is phenomenal! The first time I visited I opted for the miso ramen and was blown away. After having tried another establishment the prior week and being unimpressed, I was searching for some excellent miso ramen and Chaplin's delivered. YUM! The next time I visited I went for happy hour, which to my surprise is everyday from 4-7 pm including weekends! I had "A Day's pleasure" which was really good and also shared some shumai and fried wontons with the table. And by some I mean several orders because, again, they have delicious food! Each visit I have sat in different places, including upstairs in their bar area by the window and downstairs in their more "formal" dining space. All experiences have been wonderful with great, prompt service and good eats. We really enjoyed our experience at Chaplin's. It was our first time there and weren't really sure what to expect. As usual it was a spot that I found through my yelp searching. Service was on point here. Bartenders were super friendly, and helpful with breaking down the menu for us. We ordered the infamous alcohol infused dumplings. They were not bad, but the alcohol was a bit too much for me. One bite was a mouthful of whiskey. A little weird for me. As for the ramen I was slightly disappointed, but not enough to not come back. For me it just fell a bit short of my expectations of ramen. The biggest issue for me was the pork belly chashu I'm used to nice thick pieces of pork that have some fat on it. This pork belly was very thinly sliced and had an overwhelming amount of fat on it. With the meat being such a major component of the ramen, I wasn't blown away. On the plus side the broth was delicious and their spicy hot sauce really packs a punch!! On to the drinks...gotta try their frozen drinks. They have a pink and a green one. Pink was more of a dark liquor blend, whereas the green was more light liquor. Both had a nice amount of alcohol, giving them a real kick. Hard to find a good frozen cocktail. They nailed these! For appetizer, we ordered some fried gyoza (shrimp and beef). Both were pretty good but I wish we tried the non-fried version to really taste the fillings. For my entree, I ordered the the chicken katsu and it tasted great. The peanut sauce/gravy was extremely satisfying and the chicken cutlet was juicy.
