This place is pretty great i am a ramen fanatic and this place has made it to my top 5 ramen spots in dc ! We didn't have the best service maybe the staff was having an off day, some people literally stared and didn't speak when we asked for stuff but again sometimes we have our off days so I didn't deduct a star for that. We had the Tori Karaage which gave a fried chicken and Mumbo sauce vibe according to my guy. the shumai I believe it was shrimp and chicken they were really good and came with a sauce similar to gyoza sauce We had the Chaplin it is salty but it tastes great, (not overly salty, just salted not seasoned most likely from the meat) not really a fan of the pork belly I love when my meat falls to pieces this needed a bit more chewing and pulling. The stamina egg was quiet amazing very similar to a nitamago egg. The star of Africa tea was really nice the beautiful small cups to ensure the tea is able to cool easily was a great addition. I would definitely come back to try something else. They also brought a nice aesthetic to their soft drinks and alcoholic beverages, most people ordered the cure as an alcoholic beverage possibly due to the burning of the herb. read more

Continuing my tour of restaurants outside of downtown and Georgetown with my guy, I visited Chaplain's for the first time this past Saturday. Long overdue considering that I had my eye on this place when they first opened up before Covid. Well better late than never; right? This is a cute, hipster ramen and cocktail spot. Nestled in the Shaw or is it Logan Circle neighborhood at 9th and P Street NW: Street parking was fairly easy to find around 5pm if you're willing to walk a few blocks. Not having reservations, we easily found seating at the upstairs bar which has an authentic view of the city's historic neighborhood. Views aren't just monuments and the mall. As for food and drink, it was really delicious. Also, they have Happy Hour from 4 to 7 on Saturday! The cocktail names pay homage to Charlie Chaplin's movies and most are half off during happy hour. My cocktail, The Vagabond tasted like a stronger version of a Pimms cup. Our bartender, Alexa was very friendly and responsive to our requests. My ramen called the Mappo Maze was delicious. It consisted of ground pork and tofu in a slightly spicy broth. I added some gyoza which were crispy and bok choy to give it more texture and veggies. Decided to stop by Chaplins because it was highly recommended for their Michelin starred ramen and unfortunately was very disappointed with the overall experience. We got seated outside, which usually isn't bad but the outdoor seating was next to a dumpster and sewage disposal which ruined our appetites and experience. The service was very friendly and communicative to our questions and any requests we had. My party all had some of their signature ramens, but when it came out there was a few egg shells in one of our bowls... yeahhh... we called over a waiter and we got the ramen remade and refunded but still ruined our appetites even more. The ramen brother is good, but the meat was over cooked and on the tougher side instead of the expected tender flavorful pork. The soft boiled egg was the highlight of the dish with a slight soy marinade and cooked perfectly. The neighborhood where it's located is very pleasant and tons of other nice restaurants around too... and some new apartment buildings which we marveled at as we walked along the street. The ramen is delicious as you can imagine - but I can't stop thinking of the whiskey injected dumplings!!!! It's so unique but it WORKS! Delicious. Came here with a large group on Sunday evening for dinner and was grateful the had a reservation that could accommodate us the day of! Service was excellent. We sat upstairs by a window overlooking the street, which was cozy and fun. Knocking off a few stars because the ribs and buns appetizers were pretty disappointing. The ribs came out cold, and not super tasty. Also, multiple of our beers tasted off. I ordered a beer that I'm familiar with and it did not taste right, and two others who ordered different beers said the same. Maybe something up with those tap lines? Man. This sucks to leave such a poor review but I'm very disappointed in this place. You can take this review as a one off, as I doubt this would happen again (crossing fingers). We're from Utah and my wife and I were recommended by a local to try here. We came around 7:00 Pm. The waitress seemed off, she took our drinks and food orders but she seemed rushed. We get our drinks, and as we are waiting for our food. Two other tables fill up as we're waiting. 40 minutes go by and these two tables get their food and we don't. So I tell the bus boy that we haven't got our food yet although we ordered a good 15 minutes before them. He tells the manager and the manager tells us what's going on. The waitress had a personal issue and had to leave. He apologizes that we'll get our food soon. 10 more minutes pass and finally we get our ramen. I'm not sure if they had to make a new batch or if they had to rush it out, but holy cow. I took my first sip and the temperature of the ramen was near boiling point. It immediately burned my mouth. Every bite after was painful. I tried telling the waiter who was covering what had happened and he laughed it off like it was a joke. I've been to several ramen restaurants in the US and Japan and this has never happened. The front part of the roof of my mouth is blistered. Same with my wife's. This sucks because I know they were in a tough spot with one of their only waitress leaving. I get it. The part that really sucked is the manager gave us the bill and charged us full price plus added a 20% tip. I just stared astounded. I wish I would had said something but I was shocked don't like to cause a scene. In Utah a discount or a free meal is offered without asking. The Chaplin a.s.s was at least a highlight, It has great flavor, that's if your tastebuds are melted to oblivion. Their cocktails are very good as well. Probably my favorite Ramen in the city -- I still have a few places to try but this is in comparison to Reren, Daikaya, Haikan, and others. The Chaplin A.S.S. in particular is the perfect blend of spice and flavor; I'd give it an easy 9.5/10. The dumplings and chicken karage were also fantastic, but it's been a couple months and I don't quite remember enough to rate them fairly. The booze-injected dumplings were a fun experience (they inject them right in front of you) but flavor wise they were pretty gross. I came here after a Wizards game, so I'm happy that I am able to find ramen late on a Friday night. First impressions, the decor here is not typical of a Japanese restaurant. However, it's still cute and gives off hipstery vibes! Really cool how there's also a bar inside and it was pretty packed. I really appreciate how the restaurant wasn't dead late at night. It helps with the ambiance and makes the restaurant more lively. Unfortunately, I had to skip on the drinks this time since I'm recovering from a surgery. For the food, gist of it, it was pretty good. Let me say the fried wontons were AMAZING. I'm always a sucker for crab rangoons and such. With Chaplin's fried wontons, I really liked that sauce drizzled on top and how they actually use crab inside. The ramen is pretty good and above average! I don't think it's as good as what I had when traveling in Tokyo. It's still really good, especially comparing other ramen places within our nation's capital. Overall, great food. This is my first time ordering ramen from Chaplin's based on many raved reviews of the place pre-COVID. I decided to finally try them out tonight. I unfortunately regret that choice. I ordered the Stamina Spicy because honestly, I love spicy ramen. It took Uber Eats about an hour & 30 minutes to finally deliver my ramen. I received it & warmed it up a bit. The presentation was really off putting & the pork honestly look like chitlins. I took one bite of the ramen & a sip of the broth. It was decent but could use a dash of salt. Unfortunately what I saw next completely turned me off, then eventually hangry (hungry + angry): a very long piece of hair in my ramen. I was so mortified & shocked to not only find this after I dug in, but to know that my food was clearly not handled in a clean, secure environment where hair nets are probably not used. I am currently traumatized & working to get my full refund. I did inform the restaurant to let them know what happened. They did apologize & said I would have to receive my full refund from UberEats. Highly likely that I will not patron this establishment again because I am traumatized. I really hate that this was my first experience after all of the good reviews my circles would say about it. Hopefully, if they see this, they will read this as not an attack but to drastically improve their cleanliness & handling of food preparation. read more

Came to Chaplin's because we've heard great things. The aesthetic is confusing. It feels like an American pub. There's a piano with a popcorn machine on top of it, a bike hanging on the wall, and very dark wood finishes surrounding. Nothing in the restaurant would make you think that they serve Japanese food. Which is fine... it's just a little odd. My partner and I were pretty underwhelmed by the food. The fried crab wontons were probably my favorite out of everything that we had. The Chicken Yakisoba tasted... old? It wasn't very flavorful and the ingredients didn't taste fresh. We ended up ordering the Beef Gyoza because we didn't like the Yakisoba. Those were okay, nothing special. Service was good. We were greeted immediately, our server was really nice, and the food did come out quickly. Chaplins is a fun spot for a meal with friends, but the vibes are definitely the priority here. It's dark and loud, and there's an option for a shot of whiskey in your dumplings which just makes them taste like a shot. The presentation is fun as your waiter literally injects the dumpling in front of you, but again, it becomes a gimmick rather than a well infused dish. The ramen and dumplings are pretty good, but I definitely felt this restaurant was going for energy over quality (but there's a time for that too!). I came here for dinner during Restaurant Week with a couple friends and was very disappointed. The food was subpar and not worth the $45 that I had to pay. I ordered the Vegetable Gyoza (fried) for my appetizer, Tan Tan Men (vegetarian version) with a Stamina Egg (egg cooked in soy sauce), and Bamboo Shoots for my main, and the Caught in a Cabaret for my dessert. The Vegetable Gyoza was unfortunately mediocre because the vegetable filling was mushy. The Tan Tan Men was pretty good, but was a little too salty for me. The Caught in a Cabaret was really disappointing. As you can see in the picture, the ice cream was almost melted by the time the dish arrived.
