Excellent food. I usually have lunch at the 29th & Willamette location on Sundays, at least once every couple of months. The portions are bountiful, served hot, very appetizingly arrayed on the plate, and not overpriced. Staff is friendly and attentive, and they recognize me, as I have been coming regularly since their Grand Opening day in the late 1970s. It is a converted Sizzler Steak House, and the owners have loose affiliations with the Azteca/Casa Ramos chain in Washington (perhaps operated by in-laws of the owners of that chain...?) I recommend the combination plates and the nachos, and a large mug of Widmer's Hefeweizen beer, served with a lemon. I never hesitate to recommend this place. read more

I really wanted some Mexican food besides the ubiquitous burrito places, so I took the kids to Chapala. The chips came nice and hot and were really good. The problems started with the guacamole I ordered. It had black patches in it like when your get an over-ripe or rotten avocado. It also had nothing in it. No salt, no lime, no onion that I could see or taste. I think there were some flecks of cilantro, but that was all I could see. The waitress acted like we were a bother most of the time. She really looked like she wanted to be somewhere else. This was my first time there, so when I was a little indecisive when I was ordering, I thought she was going to just walk off in disgust. Maybe she was having a bad day. She did bring the food and everything else in a timely manner, so no complaints there. I got the fajitas with chicken and vegetables. It was okay. The homemade corn tortillas are much better at Ranchito grill. These were just the regular store bought ones. The decor is pretty grimy. We had rips in our booth with tape that was peeling off. The wood trim on the window in our booth had a couple different colors slapped on. When I see decor that is totally neglected, I tend to wonder what the kitchen looks like. The salsa and chips were the best thing here on the night I went. I would imagine the rest of the menu is serviceable and filling. If you want food with a tad bit of inspiration or creativity behind it, I wouldn't bother with Chapala. If you want a heaping plate of bland carbs you will find it here. It is not cheap either, so you might as well stick to the Burrito Boys and save a few bucks. read more

Ugh, I so want to like this place. It's a short walk away, but sadly is by far the worst restaurant in the area. Their plates are way over-priced and the quality does not match. I can only wish that one day they see the light so we can get a good Mexican restaurant in the area. read more

Seriously insulting that a Mexican restaurant would charge as much as Chapala's does for sub par food. Averaging $12 a plate for something that I could purchase in the freezer section at the grocer's for about $3. The Willamette Street restaurant is hideous inside. It's filthy and needs a serious facelift. The customer service, if you can call it that, leaves an even worse taste in my mouth than the food. I really wish that people would realize that there is WAY better Mexican food out there. Hell, put some Taco Bell on a fancy plate and you'd be just fine. read more

The food is on par with your average mexican food in town but the prices are sky high. $15 for a wet burrito that costs $10 elsewhere just didn't cut it for me. I started the evening with a plate of Camarones a la Diabla. I took one bite and made a face. It tasted like ketchup with hot sauce in it. I told the very nice waiter that I couldn't eat it because it didn't taste good. He said they make it with ketchup!!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me?! This is my favorite dish almost everywhere I go and this one was garbage. At least the burrito was good even though it was expensive. Drinks were also VERY expensive. This place reminds me of Californian mexican cuisine, which I like because its what I was raised on. The employees are always friendly, the prices can't be beat for their enchiladas, and of the drinks I've had they are plenty tasty. Too bad they don't offer horchata. read more

I already posted with no response but oh well. I recently came to your 29 location for dinner with my daughter. My daughter had a bone in her chicken enchiladas and i ordered a chicken chimi and was served a bean one. I know things happen but the server argued with me that it had chicken in it which clearly it didn't. I've been to your coburg location many times with excellent service and food. maybe they should give your 29st some lessons. read more

We really like Chapala - both locations. The service is usually very fast, the choices are plentiful (we are vegetarian), and we have three kids who always can find something. I cannot speak for meat dishes, but for kids' burritos, vegetable fajitas, and (my favorite) carnitas de tofu, it is a consistent sure bet. I got what they call a mucho on their menu. All I ended up with was a mucho stomach ache.

Their food is excellent but when I called in a To-go order and asked about chips and salsa and if it was free, I was told that some came with the meal. When I went to pick up my order there was an extra $8.50 dollar charge on my receipt. It was quite frustrating when I was told that they are free with the meal and then get a bill that was an entire meals worth for chips and salsa. read more

My favorite Mexican restaurant in Eugene for over a decade. The food is very good and even though their prices have slowly risen over the years, I still find it a great experience. The service is very attentive and without exception the food has been served without a wait - very fast! This point stands out very much and my friends and I appreciate this about this location. It feels more family owned then a chain and the chips and salsa are fantastic. Try their Cadillac Margarita - you won't regret it. Occasionally there is a live mariachi going around in the evenings and I have not ever been dissapointed. read more

We found this hidden jewel by chance through friends visiting out of town. The waiter/waitress greet you with a smile, chips and salsa is served, and if you want more, which usually my husband does, they kindly bring you more, no questions asked! The food is delicious, the service is excellent, and they have lunch specials during the week as well. Chapala located in the Oakway shopping center has by far become our favorite place to go for the best Mexican food to be found this side of Oregon. read more

I'm sorry to say this but Chapala is the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever experienced. I was born and raised in Arizona among some of the most excellent Mexican food in the states but have lived in Eugene for 25 years. it took a while to get used to the cuisine here which is very gringo - ized. But I am used to it now. Believe me, even Taco Bell beats this place. We had lunch at Chapala today. We each had a taco, enchilada, I had a tostada and my partner had a tamale, rice and beans. It was terrible. No taste whatsoever! Everything was bland. They don't offer a hot sauce without cilantro. But most of all, just tasteless food. Mexican must be filled with flavor and spice. Not boring and bland. I didn't even finish and it was really expensive. I read reviews saying this restaurant is packed at night. Really? Well, perhaps the gringos in Eugene like their Mexican bland. That's the only thing I can think of. You can find more flavor in a cafeteria. read more

We were some of the first customers when they opened about twenty years ago and still go and eat there about a half dozen times a month. Everything about them is good. Starting with the kitchen is clean, have been in it and saw how they prepared the food. The menu is varied, many selections. I don't know how they do it but between making the order and the food being on your table is extremely fast. Last of all the food is simply good. A few tips, for adults, go into the bar area. It is quiet usually with the TV on some kind of game. The drinks are good and reasonable in price. They now have a new menu supplement and we have eaten three of the four items listed and they are excellent. The servers are fast, polite, and efficient. Parking is excellent. Due to health issues I frequently have to get a take out order, they are prompt and well prepared. I would consider it one of the best restaurants in all of south Eugene. read more

Disgusting. Overpriced. Queso was heated in a microwave. Chips stale. "Special" was stale taco shells, stale tostada shells, Everything was un flavored and covered in melted cheddar cheese. More than Amarican-ized. Ice burg Lettuce took up half the plate. Rice was stale. NOT what I expected for 12$ a plate. Margaritas are $6.50 for less than a SHOT of tequila in a small glass. Was mostly Mixer. Which gave us heartburn. If your foods going to suck at least liquor up your guests. Deep fried ice cream was ice cream in a stale shell covered in cheap chocolate syrup. The waitress NEVER asked us how our food was, NEVER refilled our chips even after we bought 5$ queso. After flagging her down for boxes she gave us ONE box. My husband and I both had left overs. One box made of cardboard. Our shredded chicken and beef was so sloppy and wet it fell through the bottom. TRASH. BOO. WORST 50$ Ive ever spent.
