Chipala grill is my favorite Mexican place in the area. The staff is friendly and the food is always cooked to perfection. I am a fan of Mexican food but in upstate New York is very difficult to find not only legit Mexican food but Mexican food that is cooked consistently good. Spending time in CA I was introduced to a lot of good Mexican style cooking. When I would come back home to NY I noticed that the Mexican food scene is big in Manhattan but when you come upstate your options are few. I have your answer! If you are in the area look no further than chapala grill. Chapala grill does not look like much on the outside. I bet people drive by here all the time and have no idea what they are missing. The type of food they serve is Mexican. They have a very large menu. I usually get the chimichangas with chicken. The chimichangas are fricken amazing!! You can get combo platters. They also have a good soup selection. There is a special area on there menu that is dedicated to vegetarians. Which can make the girls happy. There lunch menu is completely different than there dinner menu. If you go to there website. They have coupons you can use. If you are into that sort of thing. Coupon or not, you should def try chapala grill. They offer happy hour here every day. There margaritas here are huge. They will def do the job. You can split the iced mixed margarita drinks with more than one person just ask for straws. I have had the iced margaritas multiple times and sometimes the waiter will bring the blender bowl right to the table and if there is left over drink he leave it. The owner here is very nice. Sometimes I see him in the restaurant behind the bar. Overall. If you are in the area chapala grill is one of the best Mexican places in the area to eat. I highly recommend it here. I have eaten here over 20 times and I have not had a bad experience yet. read more

I'm gonna try and be un-biased here as my wife and I just moved here from El Paso, so there really can be no comparison. It truly would be unfair to judge Mexican restaurants to them. This is the first one we have tried since moving here and I gotta say, really un-impressed. For starters, the salsa is pretty runny and holy onions Batman. There were soooooo many onions in the salsa, and everything we had actually. We had 2 different burritos and they were both f-i-l-l-e-d with onions. Good thing I like onions. The burrito was pretty good and we both enjoyed them for the most part. The rice on the other hand was really not that good. Judging on the reviews, there are some people that REALLY love this place, so I am sure I'm gonna get some hate but it is what it is. This has been my go to stop for yearsssss now. The staff is absolutely so kind and helpful and everyone working, from what I see, seems genuinely happy to be there. The food is totally worth the price in my opinion. This was where my boyfriend and I would go for date nights all the time. I'm going to be honest,I'm not big on Mexican cuisine,the best I've ever had was Chi Chi restaurant in Yonkers back in the mid-late 80's(lol).my grandson wanted to celebrate his 19th bday here, I'm sorry I read or looked appealing to me. So I'll tell you my wife and daughters and grandson loved what they had, wife and daughter had taco dorado with refried beans & Spanish rice...they loved it ,another daughter had chimichanga combo,she raved about how delicious it was. I stuck with what looked familiar,Fajita Chapala, looked to be overcooked , couldn't tell green peppers from the onions,steak and chicken looked the same. 3 medium shrimp just barely made a decent fajita. No sour cream no salsa, used salsa that we dipped chips in. They did bring chips and salsa when we were seated. Watered down salsa lots of onions but very little tomato and anything else that's suppose to go in a good salsa. Wife and daughter had fried ice cream,& chimichanga ice cream,they loved it,everyone left full. The servers for me were the best part of this experience, friendly and efficient. As I said I'm not into Mexican cuisine, but I know a lot of people are ,so go and try it for yourself. Also very nice decor and a nice laid back atmosphere. read more

I have to say that I'm glad that we found such a great place to have good food and quality service this close to home. Very thing was very fresh and home made looking and tasting!! My friends and I popped into Chapala because of the GREAT Yelp reviews and the fact that it's a Mexican place near Storm King where we'd spent most of the morning. We were pleasantly surprised to find the service, food, and drinks all on point. When we arrived, Chapala looked like it could be a disaster. It's decorated like a mid to early 2000s restaurant in middle America, but honestly, don't be deceived. Who cares what the place looks like if it has great food?? All three of us ordered different things. I had the enchiladas with tomatillo sauce, and they were phenomenal. The meat was deliciously marinated, the sauce was just the right level of spiciness, and the rice and beans were phenomenal. We also split a fried ice cream which was delicious and each of us had a different beverage. I had strawberry virgin margarita...or, at least, that's what I called it. It was surprisingly better than good. It didn't taste like medicine or fake flavored...even if it was. Overall, it was a great place to stop. read more

What a great surprise! I'm not a big Mexican food fan but this place was close and we thought we'd try it. Inside was colorful, nicely laid out and busy for a Tuesday night! We thought that was a good sign and it was. Our waitress, Mirabelle (I may have that wrong), was courteous, prompt and friendly. We ordered drinks and food all at once and she took care of everything right away. My husband loved the chips and salsa before dinner even got there. He had Black Bean soup which was delicious. I had Chapala Chicken soup which was fantastic! I scraped the bowl. The broth was lovely, light and tasteful with a slight kick. There was alot of shredded, tender chicken plus tortilla strips and some vegetables. It was a big bowl, I didn't I think I could finish it all but I wasn't leaving a drop. Our dinners came out sizzling hot. The food was actually steaming on our table. My husband had steak with vegetables (carne assada) which he loved and was too much for him to finish. They brought him rice and beans in these cute little tortilla bowls, he couldn't even eat it all. I had 3 hard shell chicken tacos that came with typical rice and beans but they were not typical, they were great. So were the tacos. At the end of our meal, we spoke with John, perhaps the head or another waiter who was equally friendly. When we told him how much we liked the place and that we wanted to talk to the manager, John ran off and came back with two shots of 43 for us. My husband declined, so I downed them both! Aye Carumba! The manager Ignacio (I think I have that wrong too) came over at John's request and was friendly and charming. And when we repeated how much we loved everything, he responded jokingly and we were all laughing. He sent over two more shots of 43 but I could only do one more at this point :) . This is my favorite Mexican spot in the area. I drive here from almost 20 miles away! Think about it, I drive 40 miles for a meal. Has to be good! I have never been let down. I called to clarify a bill issue, by the end of the second conversation I was called a liar. I have never felt so insulted. Basically this manager who called himself El Capitan decided to take sides over the customer and even mistakenly accused me of having an issue with another waiter. How dare him. Too bad for them, because I'm a avid restaurant goer who appreciates a good meal. This man was very unprofessional and I will never recommend this place to anyone. So once again I have to shout my praises to this amazing restaurant. We went on a Friday at 4:30 to avoid the evening rush. It was not so loud and very nice actually with less people in the dining room. Hubby and I shared a plate of tamales as an appetizer and they were so soft, hot and flavorful - we thoroughly enjoyed them. We both opted for a combination platter and they both came out piping hot and so fresh, flavorful and delicious. Only one draw back this time and it was that they didn't refill our chips and salsa - normally they do but this time for whatever reason they did not but that does not deter from the amazing food and service for me. I've been back to Chapala Grill several times since I wrote my first review, but I don't think that my husband and I will be going back anymore. We used to drive well out of our way to visit, since we loved it so much, but the last 2-3 times the service is getting worse with each visit. It is no longer worth the 35 minute drive. Ignacio, whom we got to know on a very friendly level was almost becoming too sarcastic with us and was making us wait longer and longer for our food, drinks and the check. The last time we visited in August, we were getting really annoyed at the unusually long wait for everything. From our perspective, it seemed that our patronage was now being taken for granted and that we no longer were in need of top-notch, efficient service because we've been regulars for so long. It's like they won our business as regulars, so now they could just ease off on trying to please us and give us second rate service. That's what happens to marriages that end in divorce, too! Too bad and oh well.... They just can't seem to keep consistent with good service. read more

When Chapala Grill first opened, my husband and I would often go there for dinner and were very happy with the food, atmosphere, and customer service. As their reputation grew , they seemed to lose sight of their customers. I the last 3 times I was there, I was disappointed--and will not return. On one occasion, they "forgot" to make my children their food, yet served the rest of the table and said it would be right out. The rest of us ate, and 20-30 minutes later when we were finished, the chicken tenders arrived (the rest of the table was finished eating!). I worked for years in restaurants, and know two basics...1) offer to feed the kids first- never last 2) the kitchen can get you chicken tenders almost instantly. The manager apologized, but then disappeared; certainly not helping the situation. The service has also been horribly slow the last several times we were there, drinks were not refilled, and food took a long time to arrive. On one visit, my daughter ordered a shrimp dinner ($23 special), it came out with 4 small, overcooked shrimp on it. I don't mind paying for quality, but I left there feeling ripped off. With these experiences, I will not be returning and certainly will no longer recommend this restaurant. read more

Perhaps I came in on an off day because when I pulled up this place on yelp I didn't expect the rave reviews. I came in for lunch with my family and we were 1 of 3 tables in the place. Service was so SO slow. We had to ask for refills on our waters, which were our only beverages. No chips were brought out with our guac, only the chips that were on the table from our salsa which were almost gone, again we had to ask for more. I ordered the civiche app for lunch and it was mostly imitation crab meat with about 4 chunks of shrimp but the flavor was pretty good. Fellow Yelpers, you will be very pleased with your dining experience at this establishment. I for one live in close proximity to this restaurant and have never dined here. I have passed by thinking this was "another" Mexican Restaurant but based upon some recent reviews was compelled to try this place. Lucky I did because I found my newest little wonder. Although I find Mexican Food at restaurants very similar in taste, except at finer establishments in NYC and elsewhere, here was something different as with each bite my wife and I remarked on the freshness and quality of the food. As with others, I did have the pleasure of meeting Ignacio who is truly a warm and inviting host. He graciously seated us and recommend a few dishes while serving us complimentary salsa and chips. I for one would have liked a better tasting salsa but when the price is $0.00....who is complaining? The entrees clearly made up for this and the size vs. cost is well proportioned. Special mention as well to their margaritas and flan! Staff and service great, although at times can be very busy. If you really need a Mexican food fix this will just barely do it. Really uninspired food. The food is about what you'd get on Tex-Mex day in a high school cafeteria. Today I had cheese enchilada and chili relleno. Chips and salsa: chips right out of industrial size bag-unflavorful. Salsa; looked and tastes like a splash of tomato juice over some diced onions. Cheese was oily like some processed cheapo block cheese. Chili relleno not bad but same oily cheese. The only reason I gave them 2 stars was the service. Went there today ordered nachos with beef for$10 very small portion nachos where soggy meat was watery then we ordered a taco salad which was almost the same has the nachos horrible I ordered a steak quesadilla it came out three small flour tortillas with very little steak which I had to pay extra for. The service is another problem the waiter was nice enough just never came to see if we needed anything like s refill on our drinks only saw him when he delivered the bill. Ordered the Texas burrito, chicken mole, and kids taco dinners. The burrito consisted of some beef and rice with a side of beans and rice (some of which was hard). I was still hungry after eating this. My husbands mole was lacking flavor. And $6.50 for one hard shell taco and some beans and rice seems a bit overpriced for a kids meal. It did not include a drink or activity like some other places. Wasn't busy, but server only check in right after meals arrived, and never came back to refill our drinks. Pros and cons: the salsa they start you off with had nice flavor however, I like mine more chunky. This was very Runny. The Texas burrito was a good size. I ordered it with beef and vegetables. My only complaint with it, was the rice and beans were lukewarm. I was eating by myself. If I had been with a group, my food would have been cold. It's not like they had to want and bring other dishes out to my table at the same time, make my food hot! Other then that... I enjoyed my visit. read more

This restaurant is great! I've gone in for a late lunch on two occasions and it has been pretty empty. The atmosphere is nice though, the dining room is a bit dark but nicely decorated. Chips and Salsa are served right away and both are quite delicious. A pitcher of margaritas is a bit expensive but quite delicious and strong enough to justify the price. The Guacomole is quite flavorful. Burritos and tacos are all well prepared and spiced. Service is great. read more
