Vegetables 12/2019

$12.95 for adults (lunch) $6.50 for kids (lunch) Pretty good deal for getting to go up as many times as you want! Plus soft serve ice cream is included after your meal! After you get seated, then you may go to the bar/buffet area (not sure what you wanna call it) to make your bowl. You can also make 2 bowls at a time which is what I wish I did instead of pile everything in 1 bowl. There is a variety of meats but also tofu for you veggie lovers. The noodles and vegetables come next followed by the sauces. After making your bowls, you stand in line to get your food cooked. If it's crowded, it may take a while. Plus your party probably won't get to really eat together since everyone's food is getting cooked at a different time. You CANNOT start making your bowl before getting seated. When I was going back to the bar for seconds, the host was telling some of the people in the line that they had to get seated before getting their food. This is a great way to eat healthy as you can choose what goes in your bowl and how much sauce etc.

This is one of those places where you select your own ingredients and they cook what you select on a huge, hot grill. You put your own dish together, so if it's not great, only yourself to blame ... ;). I found it fun, enjoyed watching them cook the food. The ingredients were fresh and all the right stuff - various meats and vegetables and sauces. Not expensive, entertaining. Give it a try. See what you can create.

Shrimp, squid, beef, broccoli, spinach, onions, mushrooms, etc

I love Chang's! Yummy! Definitely busy during dinner time. It's usually manageable at 6:30 pm. They serve alcohol at this one.

Spinach, onion, celery, carrot, bell pepper, mushroom, bean sprouts, zucchini, broccoli, green onion, and more. Chicken, beef, pork, lamb, and fish (?) Definitely put some hot oil in your sauce as it gives a nice kick of heat. There is a to go option where you can [over]fill 2 bowls .. eat good at home too. 2 plates filled me for the day.

Since first reviewing Chang's Mongolian Grill at 122nd Avenue, Portland in 2013, I've come to a…read morechange of heart in categorizing this Mongolian-style buffet and grill eats joint. After having enjoyed or not enjoyed similar eats across multiple cities across the U.S., north, east, south and west I've come to a noteworthy and somewhat surprising realization. Chang's Mongolian Grill at 112nd Avenue, Portland, is if not the best, very darn close to the best Mongolian Grill I've visited to date - anywhere! As I've mentioned before, not the best restaurant in the world, it does oblige up some actually great stuff by way of their self-serve stomach stuffing, hunger stifling, long assed, and astoundingly delish buffet assortment! Since its introduction to the east and west through China by the infamous Genghis Khan during 13th century invasion of China - the food style has pretty much swept the world with its simplicity, taste and to a certain extent affordability. One of the most important advantages to these grills is the assortment of items you can put together to create a unique dish of your own. Almost any Mongolian resto buffet will typically incorporate crab legs: fried, steamed, or boiled. Also, Hibachi-style stations: with grilled meats such as fish, pork and others. Sometimes a fresh sushi bar: Sushi rolls and other sushi offerings could be available. Conventional Mongolian offerings: such as dumplings, noodles, and other traditional items are usually available. And last but not least, vegetarian options can include: Broccoli; Bell peppers red, yellow, and/or green; Carrots; red onions; Snap peas; Mushrooms. This all caters to dietary and taste bud preferences. Such options and diversity are developed to offer a mixed yet extensive and diverse dining experience, with self-serve and/or self-stuffing convenience. With this accessibility at your disposal, if you leave hungry, you most definitely have a serious problem they cannot help with. One of the most in your face stand outs for me at this Chang's is their attention to detail... constant cleanliness and upkeep of their buffet area, the overall cleanliness of the eating area in general - I rarely see an unclean table, as well as attentive staff, unless folks are just then walking away. Also, the grillers are fantastic... prepping your food just as you order it! These artists overall have the uncanny abilities only excelled by Teppanyaki pros! Overall, the homeyness, welcoming atmosphere and the aromas wafting around the restaurant grips you from the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out, not to mention when you leave your tummy and taste buds are super satisfied!

There are booths where you order food to come cooked, and then the hot pot tables where you order the ingredients and cook them yourself. It's very interactive, and they have plenty of meats, vegetables, tofu, dumplings and noodles. You can choose the broth you want at the beginning and they'll bring out the pot. Each pot is split in 2, so you order one regular broth and then a spicy broth. They also have a veggie broth, which I really enjoy. You can grab things from the salad bar, and they have different sauces/oils you can take and add to your soup. You're able to really customize the experience. It's a fun little experiment you get to do with your friends and family. The space itself is busy with customers walking around and staff brining drinks and food, but it's not crazy. We joke that the steam from the soup is a nice facial treatment. Lol. You can end the night with an ice cream cone and lollipop in the waiting room. I've been a few times, and I will say the first time is overwhelming with trying to figure out what to do, but after that you get more confident and interested in curating a soup that's to your taste.

Once we were seated though, things went downhill. Only one person out of our four person table had done hot pot before, the rest of us were clueless. The server didn't bother to ask if we understood how to order and were super unhelpful every time we asked a question, kind of waving us off. Apparently you place an order and have to wait 20 minutes before you can place another order? What? I've been to kbbq plenty of times and have never been met with this delay. We got their original soup base and curry base. Both were mid. Not very flavorful until the very very end when we had finished cooking and were ready to leave. Maybe eating boiled meat just isn't for me, but I feel like everything was pretty bland and tasteless. The best part of the meal was the ice cream we grabbed on the way out imo. They gave us $20 off coupons randomly, said we couldn't use them that night. Probably a ploy to get us to go back, but not even with a discount like that would I go back. Straight to the trash. Save yourself and go to kbbq or the Asian buffet that's 10 min away. Disappointing night out with the fam.
