UPDATE: This has become my go to Chinese restaurant. I found out I have a gluten allergy. This is one of the rare places I can have a meal and not worry about hidden gluten (iykyk). A little hard to find with Greashem's nightmare traffic, but worth hunting for. Promptly seated with water, tea, and lunch menus. Hot and sour soup came with lunch, and it was above average with lots of chicken and vegetables. Our orders came out shortly after finishing the soup. Beautifully presented and prepared. Hunan Beef was excellent with every vegetable you can imagine, sans celery thank god, i hate celery and most Chinese restaurants seem to extend their dish's with it. Val's mushroom chicken was beautiful, with lots of mushrooms and chicken. I know employees don't want to work overtime. I get it. We did arrive a half hour before closing time (9:30 pm) so we ate as fast as possible. 10/10! Happy to have found this place. The reviews looked good snd the pictures looked good too. We liked that the prices weren't too bad, lunch is $2 less then dinner. So like $10.50 & $12.50. The lunch special comes with soup too! Hot tea served as well :) We got Orange chicken (which is a dollar more), chicken fried rice and chicken chow main for $38. Everything tasted super fresh and didn't feel heavy afterwards. A lot of food so lots of left overs too :) The service was awesome, and the restaurant was really clean. This Americanized Chinese food was not the expected Sichuan or Szechuan food. The cooks were Asian and I suspect are Chinese but the menu is typical small town Chinese food. I asked about Sichuan peppercorn dishes and they only had one. Ma La Chicken or could be made with beef or pork. Unimpressed with lack of authenticity to the Sichuan name I feel should be called Chinese Food. That said the Ma La Chicken I ordered was tasty with tender white moist chicken not overcooked, onions, snow peas, shiitake mushrooms all fresh and crisp and not cooked poorly. Just not Sichuan. So if you are not looking for ethnic Sichuan Chinese food I can perhaps recommend it to you. It's Chinese food for white people. Kind of like Epcot Italy. The decor is ok plain. Seating is ample. Bathroom not clean. That part is pretty authentic Chinese restaurant and usually means it will be good. Service was fine. I think I put them off a little questioning non Szechuan menu Szechuan named restaurant. I had to show the waitress photo of The Szechuan peppercorn. Prices were good portions huge. I got the Hunan Spicy Beef. I wasn't sure what it was and with a Hot Pepper Icon next to the name. I thought it would be a good idea to look it up before buying. Its main ingredients are chili peppers, garlic, and Szechuan peppercorn. It has a sweet/spicy and complicated taste. It is famous for the distinctive tingly numbing sensation it produces when eaten...... So hot it numbs the Tounge! What? Ya. That's what I want. I ordered Hunan Beef. Our waitress was on point. Fast and polite. We sat next to the open window kitchen. It was awesome watching cooks play with Dragons. Our food starts coming out. Bam. Everything looked amazing. My Hunan Beef sets down. Bang. Love this place! The staff is quick to greet you as you enter, take your order, and the food is served piping hot. Each entree is large enough to share family style with leftovers to take home. Szechuan Open Kitchen is located off of Burnside, just across the street from the Gresham Fred Meyer and Walmart, tucked in the back corner of the parking lot, near Clackamas County Bank. Parking is always available. We've been coming here for years. They offer a large menu organized by your protein- pork, chicken, beef, seafood, and vegetarian. So many options from appetizers to entrees. We've always enjoyed everything we've ordered. Our favorites are the honey walnut prawns (ask for spicy) and the shredded pork with black bean sauce. I love honey walnut shrimp and I haven't found it on any Chinese restaurant menu on the east side of town. I've only found honey walnut prawns at restaurants on 82nd in Portland or in Beaverton. If you're in the Gresham area and don't want to drive into Portland, stop here for honey walnut prawns. The shredded pork is tender and so flavorful! We always go there for this dish. I stick to just ordering the entrees as rice is included. Hot tea is served with your meal, whether you're dining solo or with a group. The restaurant has tons of seating. Great place for family dinners. There are often birthday parties or some type of celebration when we're there. Wine, beer and mixed drinks are available. Reasonable prices! We haven't eaten from this restaurant since the pandemic started. Our food was amazing! It was always good before but it was just amazing. I do not feel like their prices have gone up. The portions are huge, even with takeout. We got two meals and it could have easily fed 4 adults. And we eat well, my husband is over 6ft and eats like a tall man eats! I really can not get over how flavorful it all was. The cashew chicken was so good, I will always order that from now on! We also got the chicken chowmein. Just okay. Don't order the fried rice. It's just not worth it. Kinda flavorless (no soy sauce or anything) and had shredded chicken which isn't my favorite. Chow mein smelled of fish sauce so while it tasted okay, my mouth was not watering. Green bean chicken was the star of the meal. Honestly the only reason I gave this place 3 stars. I just had a DoorDash delivery from this restaurant. Everything came hot perfect very large portions and extremely delicious. This is my number one spot in Gresham. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a Chinese food in the Gresham Barlow area. I wanted to take pictures, but my son jumped into it way too quick. We had the wonton soup which was delicious the lemon chicken which was delicious and the fried rice which was enough for a whole entire family. The food here is very gross. I ordered Kung Pao Chicken and for some reason they deep fry theirs with no vegetables and very little sauce. The fryer oil you could smell after the Togo container lid was removed. It's the smell and taste oil gets when it's past it's useful life and should be changed. The restaurant is tucked into the corner of a strip mall. The mirrors running the length of the restaurant help brighten up the space. Decor, primarily the booths, is dated 1980s mauve floral. Lunch itself was ok. Vegetarian options are extremely limited. Many interesting dishes on the lunch menu offer a choice protein but tofu isn't among the choices, unlike at other Chinese restaurants. Menu also lacks descriptions. After I ordered ma po tofu, thinking it would include more veg than a sprinkle of chopped scallions, I wound up ordering a second dish so that I could have some vegetables. We just happened to be in Gresham to pick up a laptop and I decided to look for lunch. I was excited to see that gluten free options were listed on the menu and they had breaded GF options. I haven't been able to find many restaurants that offer them since we left the Seattle area. I got the GF orange chicken and my spouse got the Happy Family. The egg flower soup was full of fluffy egg and definitely met our standards for good soup. The orange chicken was quite good, with crispy breading but tender chicken chunks. The lunch portions are a good size and a good value. Very happy I found this restaurant. We'll be back when we're in the area. read more
