We have always loved the Chang's in Gladstone but we recently moved closer to this location so we wanted to try it out. We'll definitely be making the drive to Gladstone in the future. This location doesn't feel very clean or kept up to give me a great feeling about dining here. The food area where we make our bowls was filled with beef but many other choices were almost gone. This area was very messy as well. Possibly from a busy lunch crowd but it wasn't wiped down or cleaned up at all. Our food was grilled nicely and everything seemed throughly cooked. The staff was reasonably friendly but we weren't offered any additional rice or wraps while we dined. In a party of 5 we each only had 1 plate because we just weren't happy with our dishes. Somehow they tasted nothing like what we were use to at the other location even though we made them just like we always do. Yet tonight something was really wrong with the food. Not the taste but we both now are at home very sick and in pain. The food was delicious and cooked to perfection, the ambience inside the restaurant felt nostalgic and homey, with little to no interruption in our family banter. The service was well spaced out while still being often enough to satisfy our needs. What ruined this experience for me and my family was the screeching noise we heard on the way to the car. After you get seated, then you may go to the bar/buffet area (not sure what you wanna call it) to make your bowl. You can also make 2 bowls at a time which is what I wish I did instead of pile everything in 1 bowl. There is a variety of meats but also tofu for you veggie lovers. The noodles and vegetables come next followed by the sauces. After making your bowls, you stand in line to get your food cooked. If it's crowded, it may take a while. Plus your party probably won't get to really eat together since everyone's food is getting cooked at a different time. You CANNOT start making your bowl before getting seated. When I was going back to the bar for seconds, the host was telling some of the people in the line that they had to get seated before getting their food. I love this chain, but this particular location is not it. The food was pretty good. The ingredients were fresh. But as I was eating I found not one, but TWO HAIRS. I told the server and he simply told me to go get another plate of food. It's a buffet! That was always an option! Then the server tried to usher us out without giving us ice cream. This was our first time here and I'm glad we finally made it by. I really don't understand why they don't have a higher rating. The food choices in the buffet bar were wonderful and oh so many sauce and oil choices at the end! I have never seen squid, cod and lamb as choices in a Mongolian Grill. Awesome! Then it happened. As we were making our way to the line to start our second round we noticed three people ahead of us, who were already halfway through the buffet, not wearing masks or gloves. This restaurant has a simple rule to follow. It's not rocket science. At the beginning of the buffet there is a table where you must use hand sanitizer and the disposable plastic gloves they provide while *wearing your mask*. I am not some Mask-Mandate Karen but this is an OPEN FOOD BUFFET for fucks sake. These idiots were breathing all over the food. The man actually bent UNDER the sneeze guard to reach over to grab something with his ungloved hand. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! Restaurants are already struggling to stay open and in business during COVID. So why is it that the fools who complain the MOST about lockdowns and wearing masks are the ones who are DIRECTLY responsible for keeping the infections going and making this pandemic go on and on and on?! UGH! Initially I had already decided to give Chang's a 4 star rating. But after one of the employees stepped in and politely but sternly ordered the three stooges back to put on their masks and wear the FREE gloves they provide I upgraded them to a 5. When you want meat and noodles this is the place to go, if it's open. Like any other Mongolian grills, getting the right mix takes a bit of practice. The offerings are the most diverse but it works for a craving. Avoid going on the weekends or holidays or you will have to wait a bit for each plate. We walked in and the older gentleman at the front looked at us and said "We are closing soon" we looked at him and said "you guys close at 9:30 right?" He sat us down and even before we could sit down, he had already put the check on our table. He kept looking at us and when we sat down around 8:30 after getting our first plate he was already pressing about getting 2nds soon. By far the best Changs I've been to. Cleanliness and good service are way more consistent here than any other location (besides Tigard location which ties with Gresham). Other than the few and far in between disappointing nights, this is the location to go to! Servers are on top of refilling drinks and staff with refilling meats and veggies at bar. The food was completely charred, there was hair in my wife's food as well, when I brought it up to my server he just argued with me telling me that was normal. Never have I ever had a bad experience from there until today. He was rude and didn't even offer me a coupon or something. I wasn't expecting free food, but we couldn't even eat our food. This place is now trash. He also made me really uncomfortable with just arguing me, to the point we were yelling at each other. my family has been to Changs for our birthdays for the past 15 years. They have always done a birthday meal for my children on their birthday. that is why we continue to go. It is usually a fun experience for my kids. This year the manager said I needed to carry my sons birth certificate with me. being he is a minor and didn't have ID. I've been eating at 'Mongoian Grills' for 40 years. People either like them or they don't. Me, I love them. I pick out exactly what I want and it's stir fried right in front of me. Sure, it's a hot grill top and sometimes it gets a little singed, but the other 98% is fine and I'm no crybaby (like some posters). I will never forget the first time I had Mongolian BBQ, It was a tiny dive and the food was amazing. Chang's is not quite that little dive but the food is just as amazing. Meats were fresh and the serving area was kept surprisingly clean considering how busy it's been each time. The Chef cleans grill every 12 plates or so and the staff is friendly and attentive. If you like Mongolian BBQ this spot is by far one of the best. I'm a big fan of Changs in Beaverton. Service and cooks are phenomenal and the food is always always amazing! However this location fell a bit short. I really struggled with 3 or 4 stars but decided on 4 because outside of the food being bland (which makes zero sense) everything else was up to par. In all honesty it deserves a true 3.5 stars. Like I said, I don't understand how the food was bland.... I made my plate the same way I do at the other location.... still my veggies were slightly undercooked and everything was SO BLAND including the meat. I use plenty of sauces, oils, herbs and veggies for flavor and nothing came thru. My second plate was cooked much better but I had chunks of grisle in my food that came off the cooking surface. I took a bite and chewed on a ch7nk of "burn" if that makes any sense. Total meal killer. But can't beat that price and quality on a good day! read more
