Well I have loved this restaurant since first trying it well over a decade ago. It is all you can eat noodles with all the added toppings that usually only exist in a noodle lovers dream. I am use to frequenting the Salem location in the past however I have to say on this last visit this location was amazing! Traveling with a toddler who is a just as big noodle connoisseur as I am I knew that on her first trip to Oregon our family had to stop here. We came in an hour before closing after visiting the gardens in portland and it did not disappoint. The staff were so wonderful and friendly. Our waiter was great! And they allowed us to make sure we stocked up on final call before closing the grill. Our interactions with the cook, waiter and hostess on October 8 were so memorable for us and the service provided was excellent! We were also excited to learn that the pro athletes like the Blazers come down from time to time to enjoy the restaurant and noodles we love so much. The ambiance was a great casual feel that was very warm and welcoming and made my family feel at home. The all you can eat price is great! I finally returned after 13 years and it was as good as ever! For three people, it was $90.00 including gratuity. The hot and sour soup wasn't as good this time though. They added chicken to it and it made the taste just sorta weird. The wait staff were super attentive though, which made for a nice dining experience. There were not many people in there either - a family of about 10 were in the back area, with only about 4 couples and us in the main area, so no real waiting. The family of 10 was like pigs at a trough, and thankfully they ate before any of the rest of us did, so the grill cook got them all out of the way while we were still working on our soft drinks and soup. read more

It's ok. One of my favorite places to go is HuHot, and so my expectations for mongolian grills are high because of HuHot. But, going to Chang's was a rather disappointment, mainly because of the lack of sauce variety. Chang's only had the basic of the basic: Soy Sauce, Oyster sauce, sugar water, salt water, garlic oil, chili oil, vinegar, and like a couple more. And they were all super watered down so trying to figure out how many ladles to put in was difficult. But there were no sauces savory, spicy, or sweet enough to cook yourself a good dish. And everyone I saw just put teriyaki glaze or chili garlic sauce after it was cooked, having all the sauces they put in before meaningless. But I understand that since there weren't enough sauce to begin with anyway. At least the variety of ingredients was nice. They even had lamb, which I love. That is what gets my approval, the amount of veggies and variety of meat. Salmon, shrimp, tilapia to name a few of the stuff available. Don't get the hot and sour. Very overpowering and not pleasant. The egg drop is ok, just out a bit of salt in it and it'll be fine. The crepe is not what you expect. They give you 4 sheets of edible sheets that have no flavor. I guess you get your dish cooked and wrap the cooked stuff inside? I did it once, not too bad, but the wrap material wasn't great. People there were very nice. Cook was very fun to talk to. I was leaning toward 2, but will give this place 3 stars. We used to have a few locations in Seattle and it wasn't uncommon to have a 5 star meal. On rare occasion, the sauces might be watered down, but when you hit the bar a second time, you know to double up on your ladles. We ended here after the main place we wanted to try was closed. The food was ok, but not nearly as good as I remember. The hot and sour soup didn't taste like chicken stock, it was a weak pepper broth and not good. The bar had everything I liked and everything looked fresh and crisp and the price was also fair. The sauces were not as rich as I like, but I was able to make a respectable plate. Eh. We got here around 5:30. Super early and it wasn't crowded yet. People trickled in after that. It had been years (15ish) since I've been to a Mongolian BBQ. I remember it being somewhat fancy at the one I went to previously (different company). So I was a little surprised when I came in here and they referred to it as a buffet. I guess I didn't feel that way in Denver when I went so long ago. The produce and meats all looked fine. Nothing old or scary looking. Then we got to the sauces. Man, I remembered there being a TON of fun sauces and flavors at the other one. This one had soy sauce, hot oil, sesame, sugar, salt and lime. That's about it. I added a good amount and proceeded to get my food cooked. It was cooked but felt like it wasn't cooked enough. All the veggies were still pretty raw. It was completely devoid of flavor. It was so incredibly bland. Thinking we didn't add enough sauces, we went back and tried again with a smaller load but more sauce. Nope. Nada. Zero flavor. We were incredibly disappointed. It just wasn't good. I dislike leaving reviews like this, but we won't be back. read more

Five stars bit most of the credit goes to me for picking the perfect ingredients, sauces and toppings. The staff is friendly but the height of the interaction is the drink order. The grill master did a fantastic job of stirring masterpiece and ensuring my selections were properly cooked. The selection of meats, veggies and sauces are all tasty and fresh. The cooks know their craft and do a serviceable job pulling it all together for you. The reason I gave this restaurant such a low rating is because it's ABSOLUTELY filthy! The windowsills are coated completely in greasy dust and masses of dead insects. The food station attendants do not understand English and when I tried to alert one of them that a vegetable serving tool had accidentally touched raw meat, she tried to put it right back in a veggie bin. I handed it back to her again and she had no idea why but finally took it away. I've come to Chang's several times. Always delicious, but maybe that's because you serve yourself. I usually go with the same food palate each time. There is one cook who is always super friendly and talkative, probably the reason we pick this location over the ones closer to us. Servers are a hit or miss but usually are also kind and friendly. This time, our server looked like she would rather be anywhere else but on a holiday that is super busy, I can understand. The thing I would say is if you have any severe allergies to any food, I would be careful when picking out your food or not come all together. All the food is cooked on the same stove (which is cleaned) and since it is serve yourself, utensils are mixed and matched (ex: people use the same utensils for tomato's, corn, jalapeños, broccoli, etc) instead of using the designated utensil for the food item. Overall, I always come back, time after time because it is delicious. They do not take reservations so I would recommend on a weekend to come right when they open at dinner time (5pm). I have never been for lunch so that experience could be completely different. read more

I really enjoyed my last visit. The food was fresh and the serving size was huge! There was a pretty large selection of meat and veggie and they had rice noodles, as I am gluten intolerant. The variety of sauces was awesome too, but I think it would be helpful to maybe put which sauces you can mix together to make other sauces. For instance, I made a mixture of sauces I normally use to marinate meat and make a spicy teriyaki, but my husband (who rarely cooks) chose sauces that don't really go together. He complained his food had no flavor lol. If there was some sort of card that had a "try these to make this" for those who may not be familiar, I think it would be helpful. Anyway, had a great time visiting with old friends while we were in town and they were one of the only places we could find that was open during the heat wave. Great customer service as well. Although I think the idea of a make-your-own all-you-can-eat Mongolian restaurant is cool, the end result is basically just another kind of fast food. You load up on meats, veggies, and noodles, pour tons of salty sugary sauces all over it, and wait in a long line for the cooks to fry your food. Then you can top it with even more sauces (namely, plum sauce) and then put your noodle-meat mixture inside a carb blanket, aka a moo shu pancake. Like I said, the food is good but it's in no way healthy for you. I think one of the biggest draws is that it's all-you-can-eat but unless you're a teenage boy or a bodybuilder, you might not want to stuff yourself on this food. read more

Things I like about Changs: Lot's of variety in terms of protiens, veggies, and what not. For lunch - around $10 will get you PLENTY of food from the buffet line plus rice, wraps, and soup, AND ice cream. Don't forget the ice cream. The staff is friendly, the cooks are fun. It's a quick decent meal and yes, if you are THAT hungry you can help yourself to more. Things that don't bring me back to Changs often: The food overall is OK - I feel like it's a bit on the greasy side sometimes...and this is due to all the oils and crap that I typically try not to add to my meal but are needed to cook the food. Even using a ridiculous amount of the flavored oils - your food still won't taste like it. It will cook out. You are best to add the jalapenos and cilantro. It get's crowded. Be prepared to wait in line for a bit. Also be prepared to carry 2 bowls through the line. Between the frozen meats and noodles/veggies....it's hard to fit in the little bowl. All in all it's not a bad stop. For Dinner hours you'll have to shell out a few more bucks. read more

This is one of my favorites among the various Mongolian places in the area. I find there are more tasty selections here and I'm a huge fan of the spinach noodles. The friendly (but very busy hence slow) waitstaff bring out rice, soup/salad, and rice wraps with your meal and a small bowl of ice cream at the end. The chefs are fast and don't overcook the food. Everyone is just so much more friendly here and they accommodate large groups well. Another nice bonus is that they provide hand sanitizer at the beginning and end of the food line, which is especially helpful with all the do-it-yourselfers clumsily spilling sauces and making the floor and serving areas all sticky. I have all these fond memories of the Mongolian Grill, and after a lunch trip with some coworkers, it's gratifying to find that the experience wasn't softened by time, so to speak. What I'm trying to say is that this was some delicious food - food that appeals to me as a programmer, I think, because you get together your components, and then compile (cook) it, see what it's like, and then go back again, fix some things, try it again, as often as you can fit in your stomach. You have no excuse if your food isn't good, because you're the one making it. As for my latest excursion: round one was pineapple pork with ginger and garlic, round two was spicy lamb with vinegar and lime juice, and round three was garlic and sesame chicken and noodles. The people cooking the food looked like they were having fun (I mean, wouldn't you?) Service was good, basically I have no complaints, and you're crazy if you think I'm not going to be paying a return visit pretty soon. also, protip - if you go near closing, you get to see what the staff make for themselves, which is interesting. also, don't be a jerk - tip the cooks. read more

My family and I went to this place for lunch while on vacation in Portland. I'm giving it 4 stars because I think the good outweighs the bad. First, the good. The selection of food is good. They have beef, pork,chicken, lamb, fish, and I think turkey too. Veggies selection is good too, and they look fresh. (See pictures.) They have a lot of sauces and the flavor is good. The restaurant is nice, clean and spacious. The waitress came over 2 or 3 times to check on us. Lunch price was only $9, which is fantastic. These are all good. Now, what keeps this place from getting 5 stars from me is how they cook the food. Their chefs are not gentle with the food. They mix and stir so hard that your noodles are all under 2" by the time they're done. Plus, food stick on their inverted wok like crazy, maybe the wok is too hot, or too dry or what, but I've never seen food stick on the cooking surface like that before. After every 3 or 4 servings, the chef was scraping a thick layer of blackened food from the wok. CRAZY! But in the end, the food still tasted good and I enjoyed my meal, so I'm giving it 4 stars. read more
