I hate to say this but the food at Chu's Eatery is not good. Certain Chinese restaurants mainly exist to operate the profitable bar and just have the restaurant side to support the bar. I think this is one of those restaurants. We ordered a chow mein with pan fried noodles and it was very meh. The main flaw is they used spaghetti noodles instead of pan fried noodles. That struck me as a cynical attempt to offer chow mein with pan fried noodles. At least they could have made a lo mein version and tried to pass it off as pan friend noodles. We also ordered the hot and sour soup. It was basically their egg flower soup reworked as hot and sour soup, and not a very good one at that. Had I known I would have just ordered their egg flower soup since it might have been an OK soup in its original form. We also ordered a meat and vegetable dish that was kind of OK, but not that good. read more

Chu's Chinese Food is great for big portions and decent 'American-Style' Chinese fare. We have enjoyed going to Chu's a few times in the past, our first time my husband wasn't so interested in getting Chinese so he actually ordered front he American menu and got a Cheeseburger. He was actually surprisingly content with the quality of the burger itself and ate it with enjoyment. I tried a few different Chinese food dishes and they were pretty great. I like the sauces they cooked the food in, they're not flavorless or bland and the ingredients in each dish make things interesting and fun to eat. The staff is very friendly and were quick to refill our tea whenever we needed it. It's definitely a staple in the area and great for a quick sit down meal. read more

First and last time that I spend money at this eatery. I know how to cook myself, my family is largely Chinese and recognize authentic Cantonese and American style Chinese food verses pre-fab commercially purchased restaurant menu items that save time in the kitchen. A few days ago I called the restaurant about their Egg Foo Young; it is a comfort food that I occasionally enjoy. I told the lady on the phone that I did not like pre-made commercial egg foo young patties. She stated that only the plain patties were commercially pre-made and said the other patties with meat were made from scratch by the se-foo. Tonight I ordered pork egg foo young and they were clearly pre-made commercial patties. I've cooked this dish myself at home, but didn't want to use a lot of oil for one dish and a mistake trusting this restaurant. I am insulted by this money hungry restaurant eagerness to sell so-lo-fon crap to the mainstream! If you want the best quality Chinese food then eat where other Chinese people have their meals like H&K Cafe; etc! read more

I have frequented Chu's as a child with my parents and most my adult life; I just turned 70. There are times 3 stars would have been generous; other times when 5 would have seemed not excessive. I have let some years slip by when they were not in form. Many people simply come to drink in the bar, which is completely separate from the dinning. Yes, there are times when you know the food has been setting, or repurposed, but not that often. Very tight with the condiments and even the pot of tea since Covid and like everything the prices have gone up. But I have always loved the place and some of the waitresses are the best. read more

I was suspicious when my order was ready in about 5 minutes, when I got it home it was obvious that my order was not cooked fresh, but instead it had come from a steam table. The best I can say is their bathrooms are first class. The rest of the restaurant is very old and the food is the worst chinese I've had in three decades. I had the combo. The soup tasted nasty. A hockey puck of egg foo young was nasty. Their chow mein had just crunchy noodles and was mostly cabbage. A nice pile of sweet and sour pork ribs was the most edible item on my plate. We were frequent customers of Chu's many years ago. Went for the first time the other night and it was the absolute worst! Food had seriously zero flavor - crab puffs had a weird taste to them and no dipping sauce. Pan fried noodles had no seasoning and were barely even cooked. Asked for pan friend noodles with the chow mein and got just pan fried noodles. Fried rice was super dry and no flavor. Took us asking several times for soy sauce and salt and pepper to actually get it. Can of Coca Cola was $3. Felt more like an inconvenience to eat there than it was worth and wasted $45 on a meal we could barely eat. My kids love noodles and they refused it We will never go back - sad to see good places go down hill so much over the years. read more

$8 lunch specials were a great deal. Comes with egg flower soup, very good. Then the entree (one of 12 or 15) comes with fried rice, spring roll and two really good crab puffs. Lotsa food and it was all hot and fresh. I ordered the General (Tso) chicken and it was the best General Tso chicken I've had in a long time. Not heavily battered like most places, but almost carmelized. This is how it SHOULD be made. Also ordered some Egg Rolls. Not to be confused with spring rolls. And these were perfect, too. Larger and bits of pork and cabbage inside. Delish! Both the hostess and server were super friendly and attentive. If I lived closer, I'd eat in here at least a couple times a week. The waitress seemed annoyed and had a bit of an attitude. Place was pretty much empty except the bar, which you can totally see into, an see the lotto machine, which is right next the bathroom. I had to take my 4yr old down the hall to use the restroom, an he said "look mom! Video games!" Not cool. Plus the food was flavorless, had to ask for silverware, plates, an water. And then they had the audacity to tack on a service tip fee. Neighborhood is very sketchy as well. Ordered take-out and it possibly could be a one-off, but the meal was terrible all around (and I'll say that even in the past I found their food to be just slightly better than average, and the only reason I continue to eat there is because my Aunt loves their egg rolls). To begin with the prices went up $1-$1.50 per plate, so two dinners and 3 appetizers cost $68!!! Next, and the worst, was the fried shrimp apps - they were overcooked and TOUGH, and the breading to meat ratio was AT LEAST 3:1!!! It was so bad that I ended up dissecting the rest of them and all were exactly the same AND they were all made up of HALF PIECES, as in you could see one side was pink/striped like a normal shrimp but the other side was WHITE INNER MEAT and you could also see where they'd been stretched out to make them as long as possible before breading them, smh (they denied doing so when I called to complain, but it was easy to see what had been done). Then came the pot stickers - these were very doughy, as in really THICK dough rather than the thinner wraps you'd normally get, and they were barely fried and on one side only, as if they were in a rush, and frankly the inside stuffing was also bland (plus the dipping sauce WAS NOT authentic Chinese dipping sauce). Then came my order of their house fried rice, and it was also a major fail. Flavorless and bland, it lacked that delicious "wok hei" or the "breath of the wok" that you get in the high heat of a seasoned wok, and aside from a handful of bean sprouts it was devoid of any other vegetables, and as a further insult, they substituted ham LUNCH MEAT for the barbeque pork ingredients. So yeah, I'm never going back and there are certainly other Chinese restaurants all over that do a better job so take my advice, you can do better. read more

The shrimp lo mein was bland and boring, the vegetables chop suey was comparable to tasteless mush and even the orange chicken lacked flavor and was overly soggy. The service was amazing. The ladies working were funny and delightful to be around. The experience was soooo much better because of them. The food was not my favorite Chinese food that I've had. The eggrolls were crisp and full of yummy stuff, but a bit bland. Same with the egg flower soup. I'm not a fan of the pieces of crumbled pork in either. The szechuan chicken didn't really have a spicy brown sauce taste--more like stir fry sauce. I didn't enjoy it. It was pleasant and cozy and the meal was ok. read more

We call it "old style" Chinese because it's what we ate at places like Chinese Village, Hung Far Low, Golden Dragon, The Republic, Canton Grill, and many more. A long time ago we moved into this neighborhood and tried Chu's and other than the awesome egg rolls, there was nothing to write home about. Tonight we gave it a shot for take out. First the egg rolls are still awesome and $6.95 for 3...can't beat that! Second the vegetable egg foo young was the best I've gotten from a restaurant in years! Light fluffy fresh crisp not greasy....as my daughter says "nomnomnom". We also had Singapore Noodles which had great potential but were a little bland because my husband specifically ordered mild because of my history of ulcers. I was also impressed that they send you home with your food in a small repurposed cardboard box instead of an overstuffed paper bag that tears. AND there was oolong tea bags in the condiments bag! Where do the real working men and women in Southeast Portland go to eat, drink, dance and sing? Here. It's the neighborhood bar with a very low 'meat market' quotient. The food is good. The bartenders are fun and personable. Singing and dancing allowed on weekends only unless someone decides to play music and start dancing during the week. Competition for karaoke is stiff, but everyone is allowed to sing unless you're stringing the cat. Frequent guests become extended family members or part of a large neighborhood. Like other bars, occasionally we are treated to meth heads who stumble in with severe twitches. But that's real Portland with real people away from the limelight. read more

My wife and I were thinking of Chinese food today and decided on Chu's. I just love their egg roles, so we headed there for lunch. I was really surprised that it was not more crowded for being lunchtime. My wife ordered Egg Foo Yung, Sweet and Sour Spareribs. Her lunch was great and the spareribs were juicy and flavorful. I had the Kung Pao lunch item with Hot & Sour soup, excellent meal, to include three egg rolls on the side and of course a pot of tee. Our food was excellent and the service was prompt and friendly. I would highly recommend this eatery, it has been around forever, but still delivers a good meal, bon apatite. read more
