My journey started with a busted receiver that I had bought on the open market. I was hesitant to go down the same path, so I spent a good amount of time doing research and came across Sheldon at Champlifier. I initially reached out as I saw a photo of the receiver I was interested on his website. He called me the next day and we had a lengthy conversation about what I was looking for, and more specifically the dimensions, as I had space constraints. He essentially talked me out of the receiver I was initially looking at due to my setup, and he was absolutely right. He recommended three units that he had in his shop and the pro/cons of each. He was up front on the costs and the labor involved to make sure they were in perfect working order before leaving his shop. We had multiple conversations as I made up my mind on which unit I wanted, and he was extremely helpful each time. When I made up my mind on the Kenwood KA-305, he gave me a lead time of two weeks, which he completed a week early and on budget. When I went to pick up the unit he hooked it up and we tested it out while he walked me through the dials. We gave it the "reggae test" as he put it, and everything sounded amazing. I went on my way with a beautiful unit and some speaker wire (which he makes in different gauges). My set up is on a new level due to Sheldon, and to top it off he called me a couple days later to make sure everything sounded good. His consultation from the beginning to the end was top notch. Talked to the owner on the phone, the said to bring my equipment in and he will tell me quickly wether he should work on it. So I pack up my turntable , drive there and I stand in the office for some time while they are having a conversation amongst them selves. No "hello", no "we will be with you in a minute", nothing. Then a woman hands me a clipboard abruptly and I notice a $70 charge on the sheet. I don't mind paying for someone's time, I think that is fair but I ask the owner about the charge because he said on the phone he was going to tell me wether it was worth fixing or not when I brought it in. But never said it would be $70. I then tell him I don't really want to spend $70 if it's not worth fixing... And remind him that he had told me on the phone that we were going to see if it was He asks what is wrong with it, and despite having had this conversation already, I start to describe what js happening and he just cuts me off and says then I should just buy another one. He did a super job, was very Covid-19 careful, explained everything he did. He's great, patiently answered questions about my amp that were unrelated to the repair, plus spent time talking to me on the phone before I brought it in. I had a portable 3-speed record player with a bad cartridge that I was dying to play for my NYE party, only problem was I didn't find Champlifier until two days before the event. "You can't hurry art" is what Sheldon told me from the beginning when I took my Marantz 140 amp to him for much needed repair/restoration. Yes, it took a long while, techs this good have quite a backlog of work. I was not in a hurry and never felt anxious about the wait. Once he got to the unit, Sheldon called and gave me two options: repair the actual problem or completely restore the unit innards (the exterior was "pristine"). I opted for the full restoration ("it will be good for another 50 years"). A couple of days later the unit was ready. When I arrived he had it playing. My Triad Silver subwoofer (circa 2003) stopped working and Sheldon fixed the amplifier which had damage from heat due to the closed design. He replaced damaged components and upgraded others to higher quality in January. The subwoofer worked for a couple of months and then failed again in March. I have always wanted to have one of the greatest integrated amplifiers from the golden age of Hi-Fi finally I came to find a nice unit in a small farm out of Madera Ca. The unit still power on but the sound was bad, it was noisy, it had some transistor parts broken inside and after 35 years living on the country it had a lot of dust but still a great system. Bought it real cheap and looking for someone to make it sound like it was mean to be. I knew was going to be difficult. The unit is rated at the best that Pioneer ever build SA9800 from 1980 silver face fluoroscan receiver. It did took a bit over 3 weeks and it cost me around 600 dlls but the unit now sounds amazing. Done several sessions of listening to Sinatra, Beatles, Dire Straits and is amazing how wonderful sounds and how quiet it is. Sheldon is a professional of this trade and is not cheap by any means but this is a hobby were you know you are gonna spend some greenbacks to get the quality you lust for. The unit was repaired and restored to Pioneer specs and now it's worth 3 times what it cost me to buy and repair. Great job. Highly recommended but be patient. Good job takes time. read more

Sheldon is THE MAN. I have a 1967 Magnavox portable suitcase style record player that one day just stopped turning on. SADDEST DAY EVER. I was referred to Champlifier by Gene (of Gene's Sound Service) because he couldn't see me for a couple months. Sheldon said it might take up to 2 weeks so I was obviously ECSTATIC when he called me 5 days later saying it was fixed! When I went to pick it up he took the time to explain the issue to me as well as give me a crash course in stereo electronics. He also showed me how to replace my record needle and emailed me links to buy new needle. What makes Champlifier awesome is you can tell Sheldon is honest and sincere, and actually enjoys his work. He is definitely a very busy man, so if your issue is a little more complicated than mine was, it may take a few weeks, like he says. I have a Yamaha P2200 stereo power amplifier from 1976 that needed a bit of work. I first took it to my previous repair guy over in Walnut Creek, but after he kept it for a month, he called me and said that he didn't know how to fix it. When I picked the amplifier up, I found out that he had even removed some pieces, and had not put them back (but at least he gave them to me in a little bag lol). After having several people recommend Sheldon at Champlifier, I decided to take my amp there. I brought him my P2200, as well as the bag of parts from the previous tech. He was optimistic about being able to fix it. He estimated 3 weeks for the repair. 3 weeks later, like clockwork, he called me saying that it was done. I was amazed that he was not only able to fix the original issues that the amp had, but also the mess that my previous tech caused, and get it all done perfectly on-time. Since bringing the amplifier home, I have stressed it considerably, and really pushed it to its limits. It has worked flawlessly, and performed far above my expectations. He gave special attention to the power supply and the phono preamp board. Over 100 capacitors were replaced, as well as many other components. Components not replaced were checked and verified. Lamps were upgraded to LED's. Weak or old solder joints were re-done. Components were cleaned and de-oxidized. This is just a sampling of what was done. Great service, came here with a friend because she had a Physics project due in 2 weeks. This place is a bit hidden on the 2nd floor, and is family owned. She was doing something with audio ports, but man was the owner extremely generous. He educated us and walked us through on every part needed. He drew parts and instructions on the board and my friend just snapped a picture of it. In the end when my friend had piles of small parts, he did not charge her. I found Sheldon and this company through the very positive Yelp reviews, so wanted to reinforce others' views with my experience. My Kenwood multiple CD player, circa 1995, has not worked since the beginning of this pandemic; very frustrating as I love music and my CD collection. I called Sheldon last week and he talked me through his likely diagnosis: a failed laser assembly. Knowing that I wanted to use it for the holidays, he offered to do some research on both replacement parts as well as alternative CD players. As promised, he called me yesterday (on a Sunday!) about a good deal on a comparable Sony player, which I picked up last night. Outstanding customer service which did not end there! Sheldon was really helpful when I brought in my malfunctioning Columbia GP-3, which was skipping and playing only at a very low volume with a tinny sound.
