Went back at 2:30pm and greeted by another 3-4 folk waiting with Fender guitars- when it was my turn to collect my ukulele after 3pm , the guy had already been inundated by guitars , he rushed to get mine restringed in 4 minutes, was very patient and attentive but was quite rushed understandably ---- 5 stars for the solo guy working who deserves to have at least 1-2 other people work, he was confident, professional and a total sound guy ......, but all I'm saying is be prepared for a wait on a Saturday !! Also , had no idea so many people have guitar issues --- it was a constant stream of people showing up with very fancy guitars , who knew , what an experience.

The serial number places it from the Yamaha factory in Japan in the early 70s. They said that it would be inspected and I would get a phone call about an estimate. They did not review the horn with me. It should have been my first red flag. A few days later I get a call informing me that 'the instrument needs a complete overhaul and that when they put a light in it it was just full of leaks everywhere and would cost $1500 in labor and $200 in parts and that it wasn't worth it because of the value of the instrument' in an arrogant judgmental tone. When I picked up the horn, I was again told about leaks. This told me everything I needed to know because I too have put a light down my instrument to find the leaks and know exactly where a 1972 vintage alto that's never had it's pad replaced is leaking. And it wasn't were he was pointing to. I don't know who hurt you or which horn you're confusing mine with but I felt like I was being lied to. If you didn't want to do the work, simply let me know. Telling me my instrument isn't worth fixing is unacceptable. I determine the value of my horn, not you. And being rude about it is even more unacceptable. I guess with the closing of AG Music in Oakland and abundant USD student rentals, there's no space for the community musician in their shop. Be warned when you cross their handyman-grade aluminum threshold.

The thing I was most impressed by though is I came in complaining about a sticking valve on a relatively new tuba. This was clearly a manufacturing defect, and I need the value to work well for an upcoming concert. He was there on a weekend when the shop was closed and spent an hour meticulously going over the value to identify the problem and got it working perfectly while I waited for the repair. I highly recommend his shop for brass instrument repairs.

This music center teaches and rent instruments to students of all ages. Victor also leads a choir group named Hip Kids. It has been around for sometime. Some kids we meet has been in the program since they were little until they graduated from middle school! Lot of great kids in the program. I'm happy that my kids are meeting good friends!

I brought in my DualSense controllers to fix analog stick issues and paid $100 to repair three knobs. Just one week later, I had the exact same issue with one of the supposedly repaired sticks. When I brought it back, I was charged an additional $60 to fix what should have already been resolved. What's most frustrating is that I couldn't get a clear explanation as to why I was being charged again for the same issue. If a repair doesn't hold up after a week, that should fall under some kind of workmanship guarantee--not an additional charge. I want to continue supporting this business because I've had good experiences in the past, but this situation felt unfair and left me questioning the quality and accountability of the repairs.

After some confusion about pricing for a service (installing a piano dolly on a concert grand) which was scheduled but not performed, I was able to resolve this disagreement with the management team. It was an uncomfortable few days, when I thought I had been treated unfairly, but everyone at Encore hung in there and made sure we resolved the issue. If I could give them a sixth star for being patient with my grumpy pants, I would! I have used Encore to move several instruments, both for professional venues and also for the homes of students and friends. They have been very good about communicating their schedule, which OF COURSE changes throughout the move-day, as they deal with various moves around the Bay Area. I've always appreciated how both the movers on the truck and the office staff have been in constant contact during the day of a move. Best of all they know how to carefully and quickly move a piano. I have seen them manage some daunting stairwells. During COVID times they have been respectful about safety, and stayed masked and distanced during their time working, although I wish they had a policy that required real masks, and didn't allow for ineffective coverings like bandannas and athletic gaiters.

Given that the price difference was minimal and that it would have been easier for him to do a single session instead of coming here twice, I appreciate that he recommended the separate sessions to give the piano time to settle before subsequent fine tuning. He also recommended an in-piano dehumidifier as my location is very humid (which is true) and there are visible signs of moisture damage inside the piano. I appreciate that he informed me of this, but without being pushy about it.

He even had us turn off the heater. One key was stuck and he fixed that as well. I had looked around- several music teachers do this as a side job and a local person wanted more than double for the same service. If you want dependable, high quality workmanship at a reasonable price this is the place!

This requires a lot of work, and this is ot a non-profit shop. I brought in several old Mcintosh vintage pieces. They needed a lot of work. One ended up costing a lot more to repair than what was estimated. They stuck to the estimate and asked if I would not mind at least paying for the additional parts needed. They basically lost money restoring an MP1-4 (look it up it is rare). they did it as a labor of love. They told me few were made and only a couple had ever come through the shop. They restored a pre-amp, tuner and power amp as well as the MP1. John explained what could and should not be done to bring these back to pristine condition. This is an honest good shop with techs who love working on vintage gear. I have to check if they are back up and running after the fire. I hope so!
