Champignon is a neighborhood staple that serves a large variety of breakfast and lunch food as well as pastries/coffee. I've seen the employees take their time with customer service and go the extra mile so I'm surprised by all the comments saying they were treated poorly. Compared to all the chains in the neighborhood, this cafe feels authentic and their food (especially the sandwiches and matcha) never disappoint! Just what I needed! After visiting my dentist nearby, I needed a place to grab a quick bite to eat. And after having passed this place on my way to the dentist, I knew I had to pay it a visit. It's a simple cafe/deli with a French name but with small cafe decor to match. The service is quick and efficient, for a lively and busy place (a lot of the medical staff come here from the nearby historial). Very good coffee with great vibes and positive energy. The staff is very friendly, and the overall service is excellent.

My son and I have grown very fond of this little spot. We look forward to our turkey, Swiss on a croissant on Saturday mornings. Quaint and cozy neighborhood spot that serves up decent coffee and assorted eats. Smoothies, pastries, bagels, soups, sandwiches, salads and such. Reasonable prices. At times after a run in Central Park I have a coffee and muffin while sitting at one if the sidewalk tables and watch the world go by. Very unassuming place in an area that's not too busy so it's kind of relaxing if you can get one of the sidewalk tables on a nice day. read more

Prices have become outrageous. I paid OVER $20 for the below meal. I used to really love this little cafe but their prices have seriously skyrocketed. I ordered an egg salad on a crossaint, some chips and a soda and it was $20 (!!!) and some change. When I asked for a receipt, it was not itemized but she did tell me the sandwich was $12, chips were nearly $4 and soda was nearly $2. Yikes. Beware the lack and inconsistency of price marking here. This is more expensive than going to Le Pain next door for a sit down meal. Service is generally not very polite or prompt at all. Takes a while to get acknowledged and the cashiers don't work with speed. I do like the guys who prepare the food. They're usually very nice. But for the price and poor service by the cashiers, I likely will not return. read more

This place is right by my work so i went to get a sandwich and smoothie. The smoothie just tasted like yogurt blended up with spinach when i requested for pineapple and mango as well... for it being $10 too it was not good and took such a long time to make too. Also the sand which was $11 and not worth it either. I think for the prices, wait time, and quality of food it's not worth it. So, first, I don't really understand the negative reviews, this place is excellent. $10.50 is NOT a lot for a sandwich in this neighborhood, especially given the quality and the friendliness of the staff. (Okay, maybe the lemonade was a little overpriced, but it's delicious!) Second, twenty plus years ago, when I first moved to the city, I used to love the chicken cutlet sandwich with provolone and Russian dressing at a deli downtown. It was pretty much my favorite sandwich ever. Today, I found the 1389 at Champignon, which is basically a gourmet version of the above sandwich. It blows that old deli sandwich out of the water. We stopped in at Champignon for a cool drink and a snack after a hot walk in Central Park. Champignon isn't fancy. It's a little old school, which I liked! It had coffee, snacks, pre-made sandwiches, and a menu of other offerings (sandwiches, smoothies, etc.). There are a few tables inside and a few outside. We had a couple of cold drinks and a pastry. But everything looked good! I would definitely stop by another time and get something to go to enjoy in Central Park! Cute French bakery close to nearby hospital. Excellent place to grab something. The paninis are delicious- the fajita panini is a personal favorite. The salads are super fresh- I've only had the create your own salads! The cookies are DELICIOUS! So soft, so good. It's a small place but it works! The store is a little bigger. They have lunch items that we didn't try. They had room to sit. A short line but the service was ok. The coffee was ok and the pastry was ok. Service is so slow and they are somewhat rude. I've been here many times over the years and the service and prices have gotten so bad that I stopped going. Today I decided to get a bacon egg and cheese on focaccia and it's unfortunate to say that the amount of bacon they gave me could barely be considered bacon bits. There were four small crumbs of bacon in the whole thing, and it cost me at least 9 dollars. Insanely overpriced. Go down the street and get a sandwich at a real place instead. read more

Stopped in today for breakfast. The champignon omelette is amazing!!! Probably the best omelette I've had on the UES. Not too big, not too much butter. Just the right amount of spices. I've been in this neighborhood for a long time, but I've never visited this place before. I regret not doing so earlier because it's a lovely little spot with exceptional food and service. For instance, when I accidentally dropped my wallet on the floor, a member of the staff named Carlos Camacho picked it up and called me the same day to let me know it was found at the cafe. Anyone who's lost their wallet knows how much this means, and I was grateful to find everything intact when I went to retrieve it. Carlos adamantly refused any kind of reward or gift, saying it was simply good karma. I hope that karma comes back to him soon. read more

ive had multiple items from here before, PROS: relatively inexpensive, takes credit card, staff is nice CONS: food is average i've ordered a bacon egg and cheese, and the bacon is just bacon bits stored inside of the scrambled egg!! its a sham!! i also ordered the breakfast egg wrap, which has bacon, egg, peppers, cheese, avocado, and it was good but small portion. the egg wrap seemed to be a popular item though, the 2 people ahead of me had ordered that as well. hazelnut iced coffee was ok, had a strange aftertaste in my opinion. they offered soy and almond milk as milk alternatives. blueberry muffin was decent. this place is way too busy for its mediocre food! i will prob keep coming back since the price is right and it's close to the hospital! read more

I find them to be eager to please. The prices are very reasonable. They have a wide variety of options to choose from. The combo half panini and salad runs about $7.50. The tables are comfortable. It's a small place. I usually find a seat before the crowds arrive. There's not much else to say. It's a nice spot when you want a quick bite to eat. Champignon does have a good select of items and their service is fine. Service is fine. Absolutely terrible!!! Worst experience I've had in awhile.. So i ordered the lobster/crab bisque- and decided to eat there- the "bisque" was watery and had zero flavor. I walked back up to the counter and asked for a refund and the lady behind the counter said she couldn't refund till the following day and didn't have a code so I asked her to call a manager and she said "no" No apologies for the "bisque" just no. Then I asked her to write down all store info I would need for a refund and she told me to just grab a bottle of water in exchange for a $9 soup. So then I said I would just exchange for a dessert-- she said no problem. We agreed I'd pay the difference (1.29) and then she says 10$ minimum! Are you kidding me!! So then she refuses to give me anything and says I can come Monday for a refund. I asked for manager info again and she refused so then I noticed there was no letter grade so I asked to see it that is when she asked for my card and said she would do the 1.29 charge and called me "honey" as she dismissed me. So demeaning the way she said it. All I wanted was a refund for shifty soup and somehow I ended up paying for even shittier cupcakes. Never go here. read more

I've been coming here for 13 years and I think I'm giving up. The bagels and pastries are decent but the woman who works the register is so rude, and treats customers with not only indifference but outright hostility. If your order or change are wrong, she will fight you. It's so extreme it's like that themed restaurant where people go to have servers be intentionally rude. They also have a completely arbitrary credit card minimum that they choose to enforce some days but not others. Today I stopped in to get a bagel, and after being completely ignored by the notorious cashier for several minutes while she messed with her phone and didn't even acknowledge my presence, she lashed out at me when I tried to politely get the attention of someone in the back, thinking they could prepare my order until she was ready, and then she refused to take my order because it was less than $10 and I had no cash, even though it was clearly a very slow day. I could easily have stopped at one of the 3 other bagel places on the same block but mistakenly went to Champignon first out of misplaced loyalty. No more...just go to Grabstein's around the corner. Lovely little cafe. Only about half a dozen table inside, and half a dozen outside. Calming music in the background. Had an egg/mushroom/cheese wrap and it was delicious. Not a large wrap... but perfect. Service was friendly. Their menu is quite extensive. I did not have any of their pastries, but they look appetizing. And they have a good selection of ready made sandwiches/salads to buy on the go. Everything is fresh. Consistent quality food and quick service! I love the vibe here, reminds me of a true Paris cafe. They have tons of baked goods as well as a wide selection of sandwiches and all day breakfast. My orders usually aren't too complicated but I've never waited more than ten minutes for a sandwich or salad and a coffee. The build your own salad is fresh and reasonably priced.
