Quality rooms,…read moreinteresting puzzles (beyond just "find the four-digit code" over and over), surprising twists, high-quality props and staging. The unlimited hints have come in handy a number of times! Gold Rush remains the fam favorite, for spoiler reasons I won't get into here, followed by Art Heist and Playground (so great that they have an escape experience for a bigger group!) We did Special Ops yesterday, which was challenging with four kids...let's just say they hit that hint button more than once. The staff is always incredible - helpful, patient, funny, engaged - and always goes above and beyond with all their customer interactions.

As someone who has done too many escape rooms to count, I'd rank The Escape Game squarely in the…read moremiddle of the pack. It's the kind of experience you would expect from a company that boasts locations at major malls across the country--accessible to all with standardized rooms with good (but not amazing) puzzles and tech. We completed "Special Ops: Mysterious Market," which places players in a Middle Eastern bazaar on a mission to infiltrate a criminal mastermind's lair. Think Indiana Jones meets Mission Impossible. The room had good production design with a healthy mix of analog and technical puzzles. However, our group of 4 people--2 experienced and 2 newbies-- found the number of puzzles a little underwhelming. I couldn't imagine doing the room with more than 4 adults, as there were simply not enough activities to keep us all occupied at the same time. Additionally, for a room that was rated 8 out of 10 in terms of difficulty, we did not think "Special Ops" was particularly challenging, especially given that it's supposed to be one of the more difficult rooms (tied with "The Heist" behind "Prison Break"). But YMMV depending on your experience and familiarity with escape rooms. Finally, as with most escape rooms, the overarching narrative falls apart if you scrutinize the twists too much. Despite these quibbles, the whole experience was still a fun afternoon diversion! We thought that the staff--from the front desk attendants to the game master--at The Escape Game were excellent. These were some of the most friendly and welcoming folks we've encountered at escape rooms in Hawaii and beyond. We particularly appreciated how the game master allowed us to customize the way we would like hints delivered--no helpful hints or nudges in the right direction without group consensus. We've found that some game masters can be overzealous in their attempts to be helpful, and this ruins the experience for all. So, having someone modify their system to fit our needs was unexpected yet welcome. One minor thing that could be improved is the process for requesting the kama'aina discount for online bookings. Currently, you show your Hawaii ID when checking in for the game, with an assurance from staff that you should be refunded to the credit card on file within 7-10 business days. I'm sorry to report that I never received the refund months after completing our room. It's not the biggest loss, but it does give me pause about doing further rooms, especially given the high price for games ($46 per person) that are not inherently private.

It's in a bit of a random spot off the street, and really can't see it from the outside until you walk in a bit to see the entrance area, which is a small area. Staff here were friendly, and also helpful in helping us with the escape during, especially since this was a family event with a younger kid, they probably felt bad for us, and we were not doing great overall, lol. Definitely exceeded that 3 hint limit! The room we did was the Y2K one, which was certainly a fun blast from the past room. For those who were 90s kids or fondly remember the 90s, this will definitely be your jam. The room itself was wide ranging of difficulty, while I wouldn't recommend for beginners, it's certainly got a good balance between difficult puzzles and easier ones. The room is also good for kids. Nothing jumpy with it that happens with this one, though, they might miss a lot of the references. But hey, if you're bringing your kids here you can tell them all about the things in there, "Back in my day...", and remind yourself how old you are! Anyways, don't want to say too much and give anything away. Have fun with the escape at Breakout Waikiki!

Their website says "call before you come" so I decided to call ahead but all calls went to voicemail. We decided to head in to see if it's available, and if not, we're gonna shoot for the next day. My group along with couple others and 1 person showed up waiting, peaking inside, trying all doors but nothing. Called the number on the door several times and nothing, every call went to voicemail once again. Then we find out owner is talking to the optometrist across the karaoke. Optometrist personnel tells a group to call the number on the door, the same number I have been calling all afternoon. And surprise! Owner picks up their call on the first try. I call again after they hang up to hopefully get a booking and calls went to voicemail again. At this point we just left. What kind of communication is this? You put contact information on your website, instagram, and your door and you nitpick which caller you're gonna answer? Communication in this business needs to improve drastically. This was a terrible experience.

Sometimes there is a group already in the room, and while there is a comfortable waiting area, you do not want to hear what is going on or it will spoil your own game. So if the previous players are going over-time or you are extra early, it is best to wait downstairs in the Logos bookstore until it is your booking time. She loves the idea of escape rooms, but panics when we're in them LOL! I scoured the internet for something we haven't done before and all the escape rooms were either too pricey, wouldn't explain how to escape when we inevitably didn't breakout, or didn't have private escape rooms. Then Google suggested Scaventours which in all my days of searching never appeared! Scaventours is on the ground floor of Marriot Waikiki. Opposite side of the hotel from the Valet. The side with the tour bus pickup. The sign says they're open daily from 9-7 I believe, but you can look up the games and book online. We booked our game morning of and all went well. There's no parking, so we parked at the Zoo like they suggested. We parked at the back half of the zoo (Mauka side) and just followed that road straight pass Denny's. That path lead us straight to the correct hotel entrance to find Scaventours easily. ALSO, the Zoo Parking wasn't taking debit cards and my husband only had a $10. He paid for 2 hours but the machine didn't give change so we got ripped. Be aware of that when parking there. After reading up on the games, I decided we would do Kanaloa's Curse. A scavenger hunt that stayed INSIDE the hotel with various puzzles fit for ages 6-11 even though some of them had me stumped. I appreciate that the game isn't timed and that there was an option to stay inside the hotel because I'm not trying to take my 7yo scavenger hunting on the streets of Waiks. It was super reasonably priced at $23 for my husband and I and $14 for my daughter. We were given the map and a clipboard of puzzles, complimentary pens and candy and we were off. The hunt took us through the ground floor of the hotel finding different things and solving puzzles. It took us just about an hour with my 7yo finding everything and doing every puzzle, so it was PERFECT for her!! At the end, we returned to the store, unlocked the treasure, she got some prizes, and we took photos with the mascot raccoon statue. She was immediately begging to do the rest of the hunts. "Not an Escape Room, Just a Frustrating Candy Hunt"…read more I've done a lot of escape rooms, and I can confidently say this was the worst one I've ever experienced. We booked "Sadie's Sweet Shop" at Room with a Clue expecting a fun, candy-themed escape challenge. Instead, we got a poorly designed scavenger hunt with no story, no urgency, and no objective beyond collecting candy. There is no escape element whatsoever--you're not solving puzzles to get out or to advance a storyline. You're just wandering the room trying to figure out what random combination of props might unlock another piece of candy. It felt like the creator designed puzzles purely for their own amusement, not for the enjoyment of players. Many of the puzzles were confusing not because they were hard, but because they were disconnected, self-indulgent, and illogical. To make things worse, the room was filled with red herrings--not clever misdirections, just pointless distractions that wasted time and made the experience frustrating instead of fun. The whole game lacked cohesion. There was no narrative thread tying things together, no build-up, no satisfying payoff. Just a cluttered space full of unrelated tasks. It felt like a rough draft of an escape room, not something worth charging admission for. Escape room fans: skip this one. Honolulu has much better options. Save your time and money

You can earn Shoyu packets by cracking codes, solving riddles, and answering triva correctly. To be honest, I did not think it was going to be super challenging, but compared to the mainland chain escape rooms, I would say it's about a 6 considering you want to "breakout" AND beat the other teams that have set records for collecting the most Shoyu packets. Plus, since they only offer one breakout room, they probably can't make it too difficult. I LOVED that our administrator was just as excited and happy to be there as we were. I wish I took more photos of the inside, but pls check it out because they change the theme every quarter or so. Can't wait to try the Christmas themed one that she (the manager/owner?) was telling us about!
