A celebration of culture is held at the Filipino Community Center a place that I've never been and happy to have a chance to see the festivities and events that embrace the Filipino culture that with scheduled conflict I almost can never make it though this year as I did have the time off took full advantage of the situation and what a fun filled day it was. In the lot and down the street is filled with food trucks and various vendors offering all types of foods from halo halo to a full plate lunch has my taste buds going into overdrive and didn't know where to begin. I did ended up starting with items from the Filipino Street Food tent as the event was just getting started so much so that some of the items weren't ready yet so it was the Hot Dog and Longanisa as I dove into my yummy meaty choices was hearty bite of deliciousness I moved out to the street and got the Halo Halo from the Halo Halo Place and got their "The Halo Halo" as it was voted the best Halo Halo topped with a scoop of ube ice cream is a light and refreshing treat and see why it's the favorite. To then Corn Onoz Hawaii with their Cheeto Z as it's coated with the vibrant and full of kick Flamin Hot Cheetos with Mahalo as their finishing sauce on top was too cute and creative :) along with entertainment it was indeed a festive event that I'm so glad to have experienced. Well I was wondering why they those character in the window and I was just too curious not to check them out and is obvious to see that this a virtual reality gaming place which is pretty cool to see the high tech pods and vehicles...a place to escape virtually. As you make your saying you can see a huge Pokémon character...Gengar to be exact and it reflects its right beside a huge gachapon machine as well, though the back are you can see some claw game machines and a bunch more of the gachapon which is a capsule toy dispenser with various popular characters actually got me looking for possibilities lol though luckily they were out and I was out of luck. Just when you think that's it there a sign and you can kinda see secret room "Space 62" where it's wall to wall of Pokémon cards I guess it all makes sense now and what a fun spot for all ages to enjoy right in the International Marketplace on the ground floor near the center. Initially, our main goal was to get Taho from One Three HI, however they were not there so we didn't get to have any Taho. HOWEVER, we did one lap around and ate some other food: TAKO4U: It was the first time I had Tako4U and we had the Yakisoba and the Most Valuable Chicken (aka MVC, which was Karaage Chicken) with the Honey Mustard mayo. I didn't get to try the Yakisoba, but the Karaage Chicken was really yummy. The mayo and karaage flavor didn't over power one another too much, so it was a nice balance that also maintained the crunchiness of the chicken. Additionally, I followed them on instagram and we got five free Takoyaki balls with the Yakisoba! The Takoyaki was definitely a bit bland, but still delightful nevertheless. ISLAND MANAPUA FACTORY: This vendor was also a first time for me, and I would say it was okay! I'm a HUGE fan of bao buns AND char siu, so I was really looking forward to trying their Char Siu bao buns, but it was alright! The bao bun itself was really good--quite fluffy and the perfect texture, but the char siu slices were unfortunately a bit too thick and it was cold and hard to chew. Next time, I'll try the chicken and duck, but I do think that the char siu slices should be a bit thinner! I will say that if you are wanting to try different bao buns, you are able to mix and match if you want, which I didn't know until after I ordered! THE AGUA BABE: Also another first for me, and it definitely was my favorite vendor of the three we tried today! We had the Lava Cloud, Lilikoi Dream, and Ube Paradise and ALL THREE were absolutely AMAZING! The drinks were light and such a perfect pair with any dinner/dish at the night market and their flavors were SO on point. The Lava Cloud was very coconut heavy while the Ube Paradise was mostly horchata, but with the perfect amount of Ube Poi drizzle to add a fun twist. I WILL be coming back to try all the other different flavors for sure! The vibe of the entire night market was so precious! The live music was awesome and the singers were pretty interactive with the crowd, and the family friendly vibe was awesome (there were a ton of kids having fun today which was such a fun sight to see). Even though it was my first time at the Village Market, I WILL BE BACK and will definitely be trying all the other vendors! :)

Two, it's not overly crowded, you will always find a seat in the large, covered eating area to enjoy your finds. Booze and live music a plus if you're into that. Three, the vendor list is not booked solid with regulars (ie What the Truck where you will see the same vendors event after event). This means lots of new, first time vendors or those from other parts of the Island who can't get a spot at the sold out, established markets. A reliable IG post of the exact vendors who will be at the Market the morning of allows preplanning; who to visit, what to eat, even if it's worth your time. Additionally, the price to be a vendor must be low meaning generous portions and reasonable prices (if you attend a lot of these events around the Island, you'll quickly learn when the price of participation is high, food quantity drops and prices are several dollars higher). Add a great layout with plenty of space, a handful of family friendly vendors, and onsite local kine friendly security and it's a solid experience. So yeah, not the biggest, nor the most popular but one of the best for foodies.

PARKING: You have to park on the street on Malakeke (free). Don't pull into the parking lot of the Haunted Plantation thinking you can sneak by, you'll get turned away or caught. Crossing Waipahu St was like being in a live Frogger game; only later did the police show up to direct/stop traffic for pedestrians, which was very much appreciated. I don't want to be a real live ghost at the corner after being squashed by a speeding motorist. PRICE: $21.00 cash only. You have reserve your time slot online, then go in person and pay up the cash. Stand in the line that leads up to the metal cubicle that opens up to magically reveal a table that will take all your money. ATM on premises. TOILETS: Port-a-potties. Dark too. Don't drop your phone into the abyss. DRINKS and THINGS: It was really hot in October. We ended up buying bottled water for $2 at the "snack cubicle" - another metal cube that had water, juice, candies for sale as well as those glow stick necklaces that light up and make you an easy target in the dark for the actors to scare. PHOTOS: No photography or video recording inside the HP. They are serious. If you get caught they will escort you off property. ATTRACTION: you wait in line at the entrance of the tunnel that leads you to the many cute plantation homes, the paths are lit with those mini candles on the ground. If you're lucky you're going on OCT 28, 203 SATURDAY on a full moon, so you can see better. Each home has a bunch of scare actors that dart across you, come up to your face, skittle on the floor, jump out from behind doors and corners, slam and pound the floor and boards. WEAR SHOES. One of the actors meant to slam the floor with his foot only to stomp on my husband's (protected) foot. Scared people may back into you and step onto your feet as well. If you're easily spooked, you'll get a lovely thrill and scream your head off. My son didn't scream once, but he's not easily scared. My husband screamed once. I screamed the whole way. I wish there was more scenery other than dark dimly lit rooms. There was only one memorable one, a barber-shop that had some light in them. If the owners of 17A are reading this, let me come do the mood lighting for future haunted plantations, I can make the houses a LOT scarier with blue, green, purple, red or orange lighting or a combo. I do my own haunted scenes at home and use theatrical lighting to make things pop. TIPS: Take cash, pee/poo at home, wear covered shoes, drink cold water in your car before walking over, wear diaper. RETURN FACTOR: Only if my vocal cords can handle it.
