"Not an Escape Room, Just a Frustrating Candy Hunt" I've done a lot of escape rooms, and I can confidently say this was the worst one I've ever experienced. We booked "Sadie's Sweet Shop" at Room with a Clue expecting a fun, candy-themed escape challenge. Instead, we got a poorly designed scavenger hunt with no story, no urgency, and no objective beyond collecting candy. There is no escape element whatsoever--you're not solving puzzles to get out or to advance a storyline. You're just wandering the room trying to figure out what random combination of props might unlock another piece of candy. It felt like the creator designed puzzles purely for their own amusement, not for the enjoyment of players. Many of the puzzles were confusing not because they were hard, but because they were disconnected, self-indulgent, and illogical. To make things worse, the room was filled with red herrings--not clever misdirections, just pointless distractions that wasted time and made the experience frustrating instead of fun. The whole game lacked cohesion. There was no narrative thread tying things together, no build-up, no satisfying payoff. Just a cluttered space full of unrelated tasks. It felt like a rough draft of an escape room, not something worth charging admission for. Escape room fans: skip this one. Honolulu has much better options. Save your time and money read more

So fun!!! Our escape room theme was Sushi, and we had to collect as many Shoyu packets as we could within 50 minutes. You can earn Shoyu packets by cracking codes, solving riddles, and answering triva correctly. To be honest, I did not think it was going to be super challenging, but compared to the mainland chain escape rooms, I would say it's about a 6 considering you want to "breakout" AND beat the other teams that have set records for collecting the most Shoyu packets. Plus, since they only offer one breakout room, they probably can't make it too difficult. I LOVED that our administrator was just as excited and happy to be there as we were. I wish I took more photos of the inside, but pls check it out because they change the theme every quarter or so. Let me help you out.... This is located where your GPS is taking you but as soon as you turn at the lights just head to the back of the building to the SECOND FLOOR!!! It is confusing because our GPS didn't know exactly where so we thought it was in the front building where all the businesses are and we quickly figured out to head to the back. This was our first time coming here. We were celebrating my daughter's birthday and she loves escape rooms. She chose Dales barbershop and omg it was harder than we expected. I did appreciate them trying to sneak more time so we could figure it out but my girls did catch the timer was off. Lol. I thought that was very thoughtful of them since they saw my kids struggling. I told my kids to just keep working we eventually figured it out. They enjoyed it very much and want to come back to do another room. Thanks to the staff for being so helpful and friendly!! I visited Room With A Clue over the weekend. My friend recommended this escape room so I was excited to try it with her. When I got there, the lobby was full so I waited outside. Once the lobby cleared out, I could check in with my party. The lobby area is tight and at most can fit two small parties of 4 people. In the lobby is where you will watch the introduction video to your escape room. Each escape room is a different theme. Themes are regularly updated to keep the game refreshed. So my group of 4 watched the video and we were on our way to the Barber Shop escape room. To give you some background, the barber shop room is where an apprentice accidentally locked the barber's tools in the safe by accident. A big VIP is coming to get a haircut but you need to help get the tools out in an hour. I hadn't done an escape room in awhile so once the countdown began I was frazzled. I was impressed by the decor on the room. It gave an authentic barber shop vibe. I didn't know where to start but my friends were already looking for clues. My friends moved quickly in finding combinations and opening locks. We got stuck at a few points, but the game master was very helpful. To ask for clues, you have to use a walkie talkie to communicate with the game master. You're allowed 3 clues. My friends and I did our best without the clues but with 14 minutes left we were stuck and asked for 1 final clue. I could feel the adrenaline rush but we made it out with 4 minutes to spare. It felt like a great accomplishment. I enjoyed teaming up with my friends to finish tasks and work together to "escape". After we completed our game, we got to decorate a "keyhole" to post onto the wall. It's fun because what better way to immortalize your win or loss by posting your team keyhole on the wall. read more

We came by last minute in the night after dinner to see if they would let us play with a small group. One of the owners was running it that night and he said he's not there that often but he was able to get us started. Overall it was a fun experience for the 3 Adults and one Child.... I forgot the name of the game...but it was themed off the false missle warning in Hawaii that other year.... Challenging, frustraing and hard at times...but overall doable....I would give it 5 stars but some of the clues didn't work cuz of a malfunction, but he gave us extra time to figure it all out and I would say it was worth the time and money and effort to have an enjoyable game.... I've done about 40 escape rooms thus far so this review is in relation to alllll that I've experienced. My partner and I did one room and it was decently enjoyable - especially for a locally owned, created, and supported small business! Room: - A Strange Case: It's rated 9/10 and in reality it's closer to 7.5 I say this with utmost humility mainly because our group of TWO (my partner and I) got out with about 10 minutes to spare. Remember, we've done over 30 rooms so we have a general good idea how these rooms are run. Granted, we did ask for a few hints and did get a few pointers that were helpful.. Quality of the room is pretty good, some unique puzzles, satisfactory quality of the puzzles - and although there is SOME wear and tear, it's not grimey or gross (some rooms are just...sticky). What makes this game challenging is there's some "multiple layer" puzzles which DO make you scratch your head a bit. ***Take note, prior knowledge of the 80's and of Stranger Things will help a bit!***. You'll appreciate the game a bit more if you have these references too. ***Getting started solving the first couple puzzles took the longest time*** ***There is no horror in this game*** Pros: - Mom and pop shop. Yes, it's in a businessy area and the rooms are converted, but doesn't take away too much from the experience. - Our one room was enjoyable! If we had more time in Oahu we would have tried one more room. - Open late. Check their website. Also, if you call them they can play around with game times and accomodate you as long as they're not full. Their website can be a little tricky to maneuver. Cons: - A little tricky with finding their location. Follow the instructions of how to park on the second story of the parking structure. - Their bathroom is alllllllllllll the way across to the other buildings. Does require a tiny bit of walking. If you have a shy blatter or need to pee during your game, good luck dashing out of your room, across the complex, to the locked bathrooms! - They dont pick up their phones all the time...so leave a message or text them. This place is awful. I really wanted to like this place. It's apparently locally-owned, seems to be a mom and pop operation, so I really wanted to support it as a local business run by a local family. But it was just terrible. I don't understand why it's so highly-rated here. The venue appears to have been built as an office with closets, and they turned those into the escape rooms. It was amateurishly done. The owner's father came up with the games, and they owners made the props themselves, with supplies you could just get from Party City and Home Depot. We did the Krampus game. Some of the locks and devices did not function, so the game master had to frequently come in and make stuff work. The last part of the game entailed a contraption with a golf ball and some sticks (hard to describe) but it was literally impossible to do because it was so poorly thought out and poorly made. The game master himself said that he's never actually seen anyone win it. There are companies on the mainland that devise escape rooms and make the props and sell them to smaller local escape room operators. I do think Room with a Clue should utilize those, so the setups would be more professional, the game play would be better, and it wouldn't end with a task that is literally physically impossible to accomplish. I love escape rooms and I've been to many of them with different companies in different cities. I won't be going back to Room with a Clue. read more

I have a mixed review of this place. I had a great time with my friends doing the puzzle. We did the krampus escape room . I guess my bad experience was with the room and game master. Maybe the place was understaffed when we went on 12/8 but there was only one person working monitoring 2 maybe 3 games at the same time. We were calling for our clue for a good10-15 mins and no answer . Since we were stuck we kept looking around the room . They said not to touch anything with a red dot one of my group pulled a plug out .. which did not have a red dot on it and it caused a key to drop which kinda made it seem legit. We went it the game and still asked for clues and we were left unanswered. One of our group had to leave the room and knock on the door and ask the guy directly for a clue . Basically he said we skipped steps since we pulled the plug and were at the end of the game. The kicker if he would've answered in the first place that probably wouldn't have happened . I feel ripped off since we were asking for clues but they never came and tike eventually ran out read more

Visited their newly re-opened location on Pensacola. Loved the new format where it's not Win or Lose, but solving as many of the puzzles as possible within the time limit. I booked their new location on Pensacola with my husband! I suck at finding clues and my husband is just naturally great at it, but IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! In fact, we had so much fun just the two of us, I booked another session with my entire family the weekend after, and we all had a blast together! I love how it's not formatted like all other "escape rooms" but it has a fun, local twist to it. It includes clues and trivia! You communicate with a walkie talkie and when we got a little stuck with some clues, they were super helpful in guiding us along. I love that the clues range from easy to challenging so it's great not just for a group of friends but for families with young kids. My niece is 10 and she left super thrilled and couldn't stop talking about it! We also love the fact that it's locally owned. Coming from a family who co-owns a small family business, we love supporting local and love their new set-up! Overall, both times I went, I left smiling and energized! Break out- first timer! The highlight of this place was the amazing staff! From start to finish each team member here gave great directions, positive vibes, and explanation. I did not expect the puzzles to be so challenging! Very entertaining with a good mix of 80's vibe, nostalgia, and super cool effects as you solve each stage of the break out room. The room used today was called the "Stranger Room" themed from the movie of the Stranger Things! Great for kids- small iPad waiver that must be used for minors! They had lots of fun- begging for more! 20% coupon given at the end for return visits! Awesome! Love that there was lots of parking, not a lot of traffic and family fun! We will be back! Plenty of parking- just make sure to head up to the 2nd floor parking level of the shopping center! My girlfriends and I just did the sushi theme room last night and it was so cute and fun!! Loved the decor and it made for some great group photos after. Our group had 4 people and was a mix of experienced players and some beginners (me!). It was challenging enough that we escaped with 5 mins to spare even with a hint or two. Escape rooms are one of my favorite things to do with my family. Since we had already completed all the Break Out Waikiki locations we decided why not check this place out. Parking was easy compared to Break Out Waikiki. No need to park blocks away and walk over. No need having to worry about the garage closing before you are able to get your car out. This place has ample parking right in front of the location. If don't already know where Room With a Clue is located they can be a little tricky to find. They are on the second level behind New Eagle Cafe on Nimitz. You have to drive up the parking ramp all the way down a make a left. There isn't a lot of signage outside so if you're not really looking you could easily miss the inconspicuous door on the corner. They seem a little short staffed with only 2 workers but that's probably why they work by appointment only. I was bummed when I found out that they had ran out of stickers, which is the Yelp check in offer. Nevertheless I still had an awesome time breaking out with my family with second dus to spare! One of my favorite escape room! Everything so flowy and make sense, we tried all rooms from Kobe Sushi (really fun!), Strange Case (highly recommended, full reminiscence of the 80s thing!) and Barbershop (really great flowy room). The game master is so professional, he agreed on our request not to give us hint when we don't ask for it. Thank you! So glad we chose to do Room with a Clue. Heard about this place years ago, also seen one of my friends post that they came here too. And earlier this year, my brother came across here and said let's do it one of these days. We finally got around to booking it for a random, spontaneous, Monday night out with my siblings and partners. Dylan welcomed us, had us sign our waivers, let us check out the escape room we were doing, which we picked, Kobe Sushi, he explained what and what, locked us in, and got down to it. There's a tv where the hints/clues are given by the game master, also where your timer is. It was very fun and interactive. You are given one hour to figure out how to escape. It was such a fun, bonding experience with my family. I, personally, had fun watching them solve all the stuff lol I was just tinkering around lol. All in all, if we could plan to do an escape room again we'd definitely come back. I think we want to try the White Room next time. Would also definitely recommend to all our friends and family as well. And Dylan was so awesome, very welcoming, friendly, informative, awesome customer service. Room with a clue is 10/10 recommend. My friends and I love escape rooms. We decided to try out Room With A Clue for a friend's birthday and it's our first time trying this escape room. We chose the room, A Strange Case, which is a theme of finding the missing children with the Stranger Things vibes. The theme was interesting, but it was the hardest room we have experienced. My friends and I did almost all the escape rooms Hawaii had to offer and we have a pretty good success rate. There were 6 of us and we were unable to escape this room. A Strange Case room was pretty small and it does get warm after awhile since we are packed in together. The puzzles were challenging but solvable. There were some issues with the locks, but our game master was understanding and stopped our clock to help clear it. This room, had a lot of puzzles and I do mean a lot! Our team had to split into 3 groups to be able to solve a different puzzle. Each puzzles gets harder and longer which was a little frustrating since it took so much time to solve it. An hour flies by and we were informed that we only completed about 70% of the room. Man, they were not kidding that this room was the hardest they got. Overall, even though we didn't escape, our team had fun. Our game master was super friendly and helpful. She gave us a good amount of free hints and explain to us the puzzles that we were unable to solve. We definitely will be back to try out their other rooms. read more

I looove going to escape rooms but never have enough friends to go with! lol.. most escape rooms require 3+ people or have u paired with randoms so I like that I was able to reserve a room for just me and my friend (2 people) without worrying about being paired with randoms. It's also awesome because after your first room they give you a discount code to come back! I hope that they continue to add new rooms over time because I've already done half of them! The staff are super chill and helpful and very observant so we never really ran into any issues. Since my wife and I are escape room enthusiasts, we had to find at least one room to do in Hawaii. We found out that Room With A Clue was offering a sushi restaurant themed escape room, Kobe Sushi Co., which was a new concept to us. We were disheartened to hear at first that this room actually wouldn't be open until the week after we left Hawaii. But thankfully Paul was super friendly and accommodating and allowed us to come try out the room a week early. We were super grateful to get to try out this room! Kobe Sushi Co., as a room was very whimsical and charming. The theme is very cute and the puzzles are pretty well-kept to the theme. We saw a few puzzles that were pretty unique based on the theme. There were a few glitches during our experience, which took away from some immersion since Paul had to come in to manually fix a few things. But since we were essentially testing the room out prior to opening, we didn't mind so much. Overall the room is not too challenging, and not too reliant on high-tech production value, but a lot of fun. There are a few puzzles that feel a bit redundant since they are slightly similar, in terms of using similar logic to figure them out. But aside from that, the room is well-designed and worth a try. read more

I booked a room to start at 7 pm, of course it says to arrive early by 10-15 minutes to fill out waivers. We arrived at 6:50 and the door was locked. I called the number on the door and left a voicemail. I rang the bell and no one answered. The girls pulled up at 7:05 pm and walked right by us and unlocked the door and went in...would have been nice to have been greeted, I mean we are the only people standing there and it's obvious we were waiting. I just yelled out, oh do we follow you. Oh yeah they apparently just came over from their other job. Great way to start. No apologies for the tardy or for us waiting in the pouring rain. The room we did is all white. It is probably the worst room we have ever done and we have done over 800 rooms across the country and abroad. Very janky. Don't expect anything high tech here, looks like a 10 year old did it. Half the props are broken. One of the clues was broken and there was no way of being able to solve it. The end puzzle is broken also. Just don't go here...it's definitely like a room that someone did on a low budget but charges the same as other rooms that have high tech. We asked them if we could try the last puzzle and they couldn't even open the lock to the puzzle, how were we to do it? They ended up cutting the rope so we could try, but how could we the puzzle was broken. There are way better rooms in Honolulu. Hard pass on this one. That wouldn't be fair. What I can tell you is this. You will have loads of fun. Real Escape Rooms started in Japan 2007. However, they seem to have florished in Europe 2011 where they are heavily themed towards the macabre. On the mainland many have popped up in the major cities. Here in Hawaii, several have started up. Room With A Clue is uniquely run, designed, operated by an all women's team. What is an escape room? It is a game where you are locked in a room with other people. To get out your group needs to solve puzzles and clues allowing you to open locks, access codes and other trickery to escape. I played here last year when there was only one room available. We were seconds away to escaping. I was here now for vengeance with a second group of people, not of my choosing, attending. JK. We did choose to be part of this UYE and fortunate to have gotten in. At the end of the day, again, we were so close to escaping but It was not meant to be this time around. Should you be scared to play? No. Do you really need to be smart, know lots of things? By all means, no. This game is a great team building game requiring lots of communication. As you play, be observant, relay what you see to the rest of your team. Ask questions. Share your thoughts. The more information shared, the greater chance someone will be able to piece it together. What I notice too is if you have a team that is diverse, from different professions or walks of life, is really helpful. I think it's because we think differently the clues or puzzles can be looked at from different perspectives. Some perspectives show a more obvious answer, or the sum paints a clearer picture. This is also a great way to spend family night. I love taking my son. After, we always end up talking for hours about it. It's been a year and this place still rocks! A year ago there was 1 room, now there are 3 escape games to try. We have come about 4 times and we still need to try all the rooms. My last visit, I planned my last work day party and brought the big boss and some of my coworker friends to come and try it. I left room for my secret weapon (the workout partner. duh! he's the smartest person I know!) We were soooooo close! But we didn't get out. That is ok. Because my main plan was to get them hooked, and oh boy, did I get them hooked. It was a little funny to see the big boss not want to stop because they HAD to solve it so they could sleep. Feeling like challenging my kids tonight, I headed to Room with a clue for a fun family game night. Reservations can be easily made online (Tip: check their website for any discounts before you checkout). Checking in was quick and before we knew it we were headed into our room. I chose the Strange Case room for our family adventure. Without giving too much away, I really enjoyed all of the details in the room and how challenged we all were. This room definitely has a throwback feel to it and those of us who grow up in the 80's will get a kick out of this room! Our game master Aaron was awesome and took the time to explain to us about the room & how escape rooms work. Being a Newbie can be a little scary and a little intimidating at first, however when you go with the right people you mesh well together with, this experience will be an obsession you want to continue doing! $32+ seems a lot? Try it once see how you like it, save up for it, whatever makes you happy! Then go book a room and enjoy the escape! My family and I decided to come here on a Saturday, we booked it the day of and was all set to go. Prior to arriving we all had to complete a waiver form online . I'm kinda still a newbie to these breakout rooms, pretty much this was the second room I've ever done. The first one I did was in Thailand, and I was craving to do something similar. We booked the room "Haunted Manor" I was a bit hesitant because I didn't want anything jumping at me and scaring me, however this room does not contain those things, but I believe other breakout rooms have those rooms. We arrived a little later than our call time, however our Clue Master RJ was awesome and explained everything very well! He walked us through and gave us clues when we were really stuck at some parts. If you decide to do the Haunted Manor expect to have limited light sources, but as you begin to uncover mysteries and solve puzzles, you might find light sources. (A little hard for newbies) With the limited lighting this room was spectacular! Unfortunately we did not escape on time! However we are definitely excited to come back and redeem ourselves and conquer another room! This was also 2 of my cousins first time doing a room, and they are hooked and wanting to go for another try! read more

I love Room with a Clue! I've been here 3x, my first for a Yelp Elite Event - so glad I went! Now I keep coming back! I've been to many Escape rooms and this one is just the best on the island. Challenges are well thought out, exciting and fun! And the props WORK and are kept in super good condition which I really appreciate. Moreover, the staff here is excellent. You can reserve online, pay online, and their website is very straight forward and informative. You can also call and reserve as well! They usually run about $35/person. They are open pretty late. We booked ours at 8:45PM. They occasionally have specials, so don't forget to sign up for their e-mail newsletter. My favorite and most recent room so far has been "A Strange Room" - a Stranger Things themed roomed. I've done a few escape rooms, but definitely wouldn't consider myself an expert on them. I've done a few here, including breakout Waikiki and some on the mainland. It's a fun experience if you like solving puzzles. It definitely brings heightens peoples' personalities, though, so make sure you're with a good crowd of people. I happened to try room with a clue with my amazing coworkers. None of us had been to room with a clue, so we were all really hyped up and excited. We booked the Island Taskforce room which was renamed maybe? But I forget the new name. We chose it because it has an 18% success rate. I've been to the Nimitz center a few times, so I knew how to park upstairs and found room with a clue easily. Definitely give yourself a bit of time to find it, especially if you're not familiar with Nimitz center. I was surprised at how small the business is. It looked like there were maybe only 2 or 3 escape rooms. We checked in, signed the waiver and were locked in the room. We watched a couple instructional videos and then the clock started ticking down. We got 4 clues (1 extra for checking in on yelp), but we ended up not using all the clues anyway. It was stressful, but fun, and we managed to escape in 42 minutes! Again, I have the best coworkers with all the best qualities. We treated ourselves to boba on the bottom floor of Nimitz center and debriefed. Those of us who had done breakout Waikiki believed that room with a clue was easier.... or maybe we were more experienced? Idk, things seemed to flow more at room with a clue. We did the White Room. It was fun but several things weren't intuitive. Also, WATCH YOUR HEAD! They really need to redo this room because there's signs posted that say "watch your head" but it's dark and hard to see there's more than one place where you have to watch your head! I'm sure the signs are posted because people have hit their head more than once. I smacked my forehead pretty hard and woke up with a knot and it hurts to touch it. I couldn't see in the dark and couldn't determine the depth of the object my head smacked into. Honestly, it's probably a matter of time before something really bad happens to someone. This is a really fun place to be when you're out with friends or family. It always makes me wonder how people can imagine such creative ideas. Secret rooms, hidden keys, hidden parts of a key, it's truly amazing (or maybe I'm just too much of a square). Luckily we didn't require much hints but will say that the key to winning this is teamwork. The person that helped us was super cool. Wishing we could've done more than this but know that this place is definitely on my list to do after covid 19. Please keep it going so many can enjoy what you have to offer. Prices are not bad either compared to other escape rooms. The experience is well worth the money and I'm the kind of guy that believes in dancing and drinking at home for free rather than going to a club. This is the third place I've tried an escape room. I generally enjoy escape rooms so this was a fun one. Definitely will come back to escape the other rooms. We did "Haunted Manor" as a group of 6, which is the max players for this room. I don't want to give it away but this was a spooky room :) Everything went great from check in to check out. The staff was really friendly. We did a 9:00pm slot and it was not buy at all. Lots of parking outside of the place. It was empty and dark which made the spookiness of our challenge even better. The only thing I didn't like was where the restroom is located. You have to walk across the parking lot to a different building and again it was at night and really empty. So be sure to go with someone. You need a key to enter the restroom and it is a single stall. They have one for women and one for men. read more
