late night solo sessions

This gym is my sanctuary Staff: Superb. Whenever I call in a panic because I need to submit some receipts for work - no matter how many times they tell me to use the portal- they are chill about it. The staff ALWAYS say hello & goodbye; therefore, manners on point. Clean: Duh. Equipment: For my needs, perfect. Dance Room: Premo space for late night - training - solo - conditioning - sessions. Retired gymnasts/dancers sometimes need space to get a little loose - here ya go. Sauna: sometimes it's down but it's better than the one I have at home * sarcasm with a smile * Classes: no comment... yet! *random note to the socially anxious or individuals looking to find a gym &/or new to the gym world -- the members here are so cool - such a focused attitude - no creepers - rock your tiny gym tops or teeny shorty shorts, because no one here is pulling any skeevy moves - just be you and sweat it out.

Good gym with a lot of different activities to participate in. Offering spin classes and much more. Showers and sauna's in the locker rooms. Nice lounge when you walk in to cool down with beverages. If in the area and looking for a nice place to workout this is the spot. I also service this client so I get to see the effort that goes into keeping this place so comfortable.

View from the treadmill....ah windows!

It's my third day. The people at the desk were *very* nice and it was easy to sign up without jumping through tons of hoops. There is a wide variety of cardio equipment which is good because I get bored. The gym is clean and spacious and so far the clientele seems friendly and in-shape. Locker rooms a bit small but there's a sauna!!! Yes!!! One person asked to jump into the middle of my deadlift sets when I was literally bending over to pick up the bar on my final set. I am all for sharing and "working in" but her request was pretty odd because there was a free bar and cage right next to me. Why couldn't she just use that? It seemed like she needed to express her aggression to someone. It is true the gentleman next to us was super setting three exercises and hogging the whole area. Later on I saw her behind the front desk so I guess she works here. I hope we'll become friends. If I didn't have to try and fit an hour workout into 45 minutes everyday, I'd have gladly had you jump in!!!! But instead I had four private massage clients and an entire rugby team waiting in the city for me. The weight equipment itself is varied (free weights, cages, machines). Not ideal for every movement (cable crossover doesn't have enough levels) and some of the machines do not fit natural body mechanics (other cable crossover is too narrow. So you recruit upper traps which is, well, BAD), but there is enough to work with and make do. And that's not just this gym, it's pretty much every gym. This one is waaaay better than most! Hence 5 stars. As a personal trainer and licensed massage therapist I am seeing a lot of bad body mechanics and potential injury as people are working out wrong here at Chalk. Again, that's any gym. I wish I had time to correct them all but no one really wants to hear it anyway so I keep my mouth shut unless they ask me. I wish these people would all hire a qualified trainer so they would end up in shape and fit and flexible, instead of in pain on my table. In all, a nice place if a bit pricey. But this is Williamsburg, where my rent just went up 40% in the last 30 months.

Their setup is awesome, with 6 hardwood platforms with infinity racks that span all of them. They have all the standard kg bumpers and nice 15 / 20 kg bars available. There's two power racks on the first floor and many more on the second, and they all have safeties. The first floor doesnt usually get very crowded except for a couple days during which there are classes between 6-8 but even then, you should be able to find a place to lift. If you're looking for coaching, Coach Joey runs two 90min sessions a week and provides exercises for a third session in the week. The first day is usually focused on snatch and the second on clean and jerk. There's a heavy emphasis on proper form, and I've found it to be an excellent environment for someone who is still learning the lifts. Usually there's no more than 6 people in the class, so each person gets plenty of individual attention. Lastly, I just want to mention how great the weightlifting community is here! Everyone I've met is pretty dedicated to the sport and super welcoming of new lifters. I've been given a few tips from others that have really helped me get better.

Disliked: terrible ventilation/climate control (asked if they could install fan, but they said nah), music too loud (had to wear earplugs), and the final straw: they rented out the yoga studio, so there is no quiet, out of the way place to stretch. Ended my membership and joined Grindhouse, which is cheaper, has good AC and high ceilings, plenty of machines, music not too loud, and has an OK place to stretch-- alas with no views.

That said, what ultimately made us walk away wasn't the facility--it was the people. At this price point, hospitality should be part of the experience. Unfortunately, nearly every interaction we had with the front desk felt cold and transactional. The staff often seemed more engaged in conversations with one another than acknowledging members or prospective members. Instead of feeling welcomed, we frequently felt as though we were inconveniencing them by asking basic questions or checking in. For a luxury fitness brand, that's am extremely disappointing first impression. After touring multiple gyms, we ultimately chose to stay loyal to Orangetheory Williamsburg instead. While it's a completely different style of workout, the difference in customer experience was impossible to ignore. From our very first visit, the staff greeted us warmly, remembered our names, and made us feel like part of a community rather than just another membership. That sense of hospitality made the decision surprisingly easy. One additional point of feedback is the sales experience. I work in enterprise sales myself, so I understand the importance of following up with prospective customers. However, there's a fine line between persistence and becoming overwhelming. Orangetheory occasionally sends a promotional text or email, which feels respectful. Equinox, on the other hand, repeatedly called, texted, and emailed after our visit to the point that it became excessive and I felt harassed. Rather than reinforcing the value of the brand, it had the opposite effect and made the experience feel more aggressive than premium. For a luxury gym with a luxury price tag, I expected a customer experience that matched the brand. The facilities are impressive, but management should seriously consider investing more attention into the hospitality culture at the front desk and the overall sales approach. Those interactions ultimately influenced our decision far more than the equipment ever did.
