The meal is structured in four "tranches," each with three choices. Our party of four managed to sample almost the entire menu. We started with cocktails and a dark chocolate Japanese ale, which set the tone nicely. Standout dishes included the tuna solera, scallion lamb, salt-baked shrimp, satay chicken, and key lime pie. Honestly, there wasn't a weak dish in the lineup. We all opted for the wine pairing ($75), which was thoughtfully selected and generously poured. Service was excellent throughout. All in, with tip, dinner for four came to about $1,200--and it felt well worth it. Highly recommended.

The milk bread and miso butter were my favorite part. The server sent me home with some of the butter. I also love that they have a tea menu. Beautiful white table cloth restaurant with moody lighting and a great bar program. I would go back for another girls' night. Heads up, if you book a reservation online, you have to put up a deposit. I was amazed at the ambiance at the decor but noticed that it felt a little quiet and there were plenty of open tables. They have a beautifully decorated seating area. I'm not sure if it's meant as a waiting area or if you can order food and drinks from the soft sofa type seats. I just couldn't help thinking that it was quiet and felt empty. They had music playing but it wasn't really adding to the ambiance. Let's talk about the food. My friend and I started with 3 appetizers to share thinking that it might be enough to satisfy us. We went with the Bang Bang Shrimp, Tuna Crudo and the Lobster Toast. My friend ordered a pomegranate cocktail which she liked enough to order another round. We were surprised at how small the portions are on the appetizers considering the prices. The best one was the Bang Bang Shrimp. But I honestly still think that it's a pretty simple dish. Nothing is really unique about a battered deep fried jumbo shrimp tossed in a kind of spicy aioli. Definitely not enough to warrant the price. We added an order of their grilled meat plate to share. Unfortunately, that was also a tiny serving for almost $30. The portion in the protein was so small, the plate looked a little sad. I didn't take a picture of it because it looked so sad. Let's talk about the service. Remember that pomegranate cocktail that my friend liked enough to order another round? Well that round never made it to our table. It was time to get the check and my friend just had to politely tell the waiter to cancel it. After we have paid for our check, the waiter then asked us to share a positive review of our experience on Google. That's fine and all, I understand if they're being asked to do so, but I think bringing attentive service should come first before asking for a positive review. The vibe is good for romantic date nights, but with NOLA having so many options for date nights ambiance, I wouldn't say there's anything truly remarkable about this place.

While holding my baby, I opened a door because we saw a sign stating that minors were permitted when accompanied by an adult. I remained at the entrance, did not step beyond the mat, and simply asked for menus and whether we could order sushi and be served outside. A brunette female bartender immediately and aggressively told us we could not be inside. I calmly explained that we had seen the sign regarding accompanied minors and were only trying to understand how to receive restaurant service. As we walked back outside, she said, "Read the fucking signs," under her breath, but loudly enough for us and nearby patrons to hear. My friend reopened the door and explained that we had read the signs but were confused. At that point, we decided to leave. However, as we were nearly off the property, the bartender rushed outside, screamed at us while pointing at the sign, and then slammed the door. The people seated outside appeared visibly stunned by her behavior. This was not a simple misunderstanding or a firm explanation of a policy. It was profane, hostile, and unnecessarily aggressive conduct toward customers, including a mother holding a baby. We were so shaken by the encounter that we left immediately. I have lived and dined throughout this city for 19 years and have never experienced treatment like this. I fully respect that establishments have rules, but customers should be able to ask for clarification without being cursed at, screamed at, and publicly humiliated. Management should take this incident seriously and review who was working behind the bar at the time. Regardless of how good the food may be, we will not return after being treated this way.

But first, we started with the Chicken Spring Rolls--six pieces that were slightly larger than bite-sized and really good. They come with two dipping sauces, and while both were good, we definitely preferred the sweet chili sauce. The Thai-Style Tilapia is served in a flavorful curry sauce with a little kick--not overly spicy, but just enough heat. What makes this dish so good is the combination of flavors. There are pineapple chunks and small tomatoes mixed into the curry sauce. I'm not a tomato eater, but I'll actually eat a couple of the tomatoes in this dish because they soak up that delicious curry sauce and taste so good with the fish. The pineapple is also surprisingly good with the curry and tilapia. This is a dish my husband and I order almost every time we come here. We also ordered fried rice--my husband had the Sake Cafe Fried Rice with shrimp, and I had the Pineapple Fried Rice with shrimp. Both were really good, and one thing I have to point out is that they are NOT stingy with the shrimp! Both dishes had plenty of shrimp throughout, which I always appreciate. We've noticed that Sake Cafe isn't nearly as busy as it used to be. Years ago, it was usually packed, the bar was lively, and I especially loved sitting outside. The outdoor seating doesn't seem to have the same presence it once did, and the overall atmosphere feels different. It makes me wonder if some of that is due to changes in management. Even with those changes, the food is still good, and we continue to enjoy coming here. The drinks are good, too. If you're in the Magazine Street area and enjoy sushi but want to try something different, I'd definitely recommend giving Sake Cafe a try--especially the Thai-Style Tilapia!
