I had really high expectations for this place after waiting a full month for a reservation and seeing so much hype online, but unfortunately it didn't quite live up to it. The experience started off strong -- I ordered one of their specialty drinks and it came out bubbled and fun, which set a great tone. The speakeasy vibe is honestly super cool, and I appreciated thoughtful touches like bag hooks and warm towels. Service overall was great. That said, the food is where things started to fall short. The sushi was fine, but not nearly as impressive as I expected for the price. The sashimi cuts were very thin and lacked flavor. The nigiri was definitely the highlight of the meal and the best thing we had. Other dishes were disappointing -- the alligator bao, teriyaki lamb, and sirloin fried rice were all overwhelmingly salty, and the pacing of the meal was slow with long waits between dishes. This place is cute but not really worth the price. When I go somewhere yes atmosphere is a factor but for a restaurant the food is the main thing and this place just missed the mark. First let's talk food. For a sushi place the menu is very limited. Only had like 6 rolls on the menu and then some sashimi/ nigiri options. We got the dinimata roll which is in the appetizer section. Good, nothing to write home about. Then we had the wagyu roll which is the best thing we ate there but again nothing amazing, comparable to other sushi places. We also had the hamachi sashimi which was good but not the best I've had. After that it was all downhill for food. The short rib boa was soooo salty and overpriced for the serving. The pork fried rice also super salty and just not a good fried rice. The teriyaki lamb chops also salty and just so basic. Then they barely gave us any water for all that salty food like damn are you going to run out of tap? Star of the show definitely the matcha lava cake desert. This was basically a butter cake, I tasted no matcha but it was very good. Second the atmosphere. Personally I don't get the whole speakeasy thing. All she did was type in a code to a door. Cool if you're into that but it did nothing for me. The decor was lovely. The blues and golds and moody lighting was such a vibe. However the tables were so close together and I found the chairs uncomfortable. The bathroom was cute as well and clean. Third the service. Our server told us to order everything at once and they would stagger bringing it out but then it felt like he forgot about us. We had so much wait time between each course. Two tables next us came after us but finished before us because that's how long they were taking to bring out our food. We were there for over 2 hours and it's just two of us and we split everything. It just felt like the waiter forgot or wasn't paying attention when to tell them to work on our next item. It was really no benefit to ordering every course first other than getting that oversized menu off the small table. Seems like whoever started this place went to sexy fish Miami and was like "oh cool I'll do the same thing in New Orleans" only they're severely lacking. Food overall in taste; I would say that I would go out of my way to experience some of the food again. We had reservations at 7:00 for 4. Arrived in plenty of time so not to be late since this restaurant was new to us. We arrived at the door Marked Sushi By Us but could not enter there. You need to enter through Tacos del Cartel. This should be noted on the door that says Sushi By Us. After the hostess found our reservation, she walk us to a door that with a push of a button that slid the pocket door opened. Upon entering the room, we noticed that there was seating perhaps for about 50 quests. This is why reservations are a great idea. The room was warm and mysterious with the choice of decor. The ceiling was beautiful with the adaptation of Coral in warm colors. This to me was an "AHA" moment. It is a tag team service with someone taking your Oder and delivering your drinks and some food while another is clearing and also delivering food. This where the service fell a little short. Trust me when I say it is lack of room in that room to allow too many people walking around. One of our entrees, fried rice with pork, was cold. No one stopped by to see how the entrees were until they came around to ask about dessert. This entree was taken home to reheat because pork cold is chewy & tough. Server did apologize however, to his defense, he was serving many other tables. Back to the menu. We each ordered a drink. Two had just gin and tonics, Miso Harmony and Hikari Blossom. Saw many other drinks that were definitely interesting to watch served and consumed. Appetizers; Salmon Crispy Rice and Mushroom Dunpling. Nigriris; Wagyu, Salmon & Hamachi. Rolls; Wagyu and Salmon. This was a cute spot! It's "hidden" inside tacos del cartel and it's a totally different atmosphere when you enter. The table we were at was a little overstimulating because servers kept walking on both sides of us constantly. The lychee drink is really good! Everything was tasty! Stopped by Sushi By Us recently. The food was good overall fresh, flavorful, and presented nicely. You can tell they're putting effort into quality, and some of the rolls really stood out. That said, they're freshly opened and the back kitchen doesn't seem fully "well-oiled" yet. There were a few hiccups with timing and coordination, but nothing major just typical new-restaurant growing pains. Service was friendly, and the vibe has potential once they get fully dialed in. Sushi By Us is hidden inside a Mexican restaurant, which was actually a pleasant surprise. Once you step inside, the entire space is under-the-sea themed. It truly feels like you're underwater while eating sushi. The concept is creative and immersive, and I loved that part immediately. The only downside to the ambiance is the space itself. It's very small, and it feels like they tried to maximize seating as much as possible. There's no clear walkway when you enter, so you're squeezing past tables saying "excuse me" and trying not to bump into people or their plates. It makes for a slightly awkward entrance. As far as service goes, the staff was kind and welcoming. However, there was some confusion at the start. Before we were given menus, we were told we would experience different courses that would be explained to us, almost as if it were a set-price tasting experience. But shortly after, another staff member brought us regular menus and asked for drink orders. There was no option for a one-price experience, so that was a bit confusing. We ordered one appetizer and two entrées: steak fried rice and salmon. The appetizer came out promptly and was very good. The steak fried rice was brought out next, mixed in front of us, and plated. It was wonderful. We decided to wait for the salmon so we could enjoy both entrées together. About 25 minutes passed with no salmon. After we asked about it, it came out shortly after. The waitress explained that because the tables are small, they typically do not bring out multiple plates at once and wait until you finish one before serving the next. While I understand the space limitation, we did order two entrées and expected them together. I ordered my salmon well done. When it arrived, it looked beautiful on the outside but was very raw in the center. I asked for it to be cooked longer. Another 25 to 30 minutes passed. At that point, I let them know that if it wasn't ready, they could cancel it and we would just pay and leave. Salmon, even well done, does not take that long to cook, so it honestly made me wonder if it had been frozen and needed extra time. The waitress apologized, removed it from the bill, still boxed it for me to take home, and offered a complimentary dessert. We chose cheesecake. Unfortunately, the to-go packaging created another issue. The containers do not sit flat inside the branded bags they provide. By the time I walked to my car, juice from the salmon had leaked through the bag and onto my dress. The bags are very nice aesthetically, but practicality matters more. Either the containers need to fit the bags properly, or regular flat-bottom bags would make more sense. The cheesecake was also disappointing. I opened it immediately after leaving and it was extremely soft, almost like yogurt. It didn't have the firmness you expect from cheesecake, and without a spoon, it was impossible to really eat. To be fair, this restaurant has only been open for about two weeks. There are clearly some kinks to work out with timing, communication, and packaging. The concept is strong, the fried rice was excellent, and the staff was polite and apologetic throughout the experience. I would absolutely give them another try once they've had more time to settle into their rhythm. The foundation is there. They just need to refine the execution. read more

Everything was phenomenal. The tuna crispy rice had the perfect crunch, the mushroom dumplings were rich and flavorful, and the spicy tuna roll was fresh with just the right kick. This establishment has been showing up in my social media feed lately, so I thought on a nice Friday night, why not try this place out? It's the first Friday of Lent, so seafood is definitely on the menu tonight! I'm an avid sushi lover, and there are just a handful of really great sushi restaurants in New Orleans (Nobu and Bisutoro are among my faves), so I was excited to add another one to the list. Unfortunately, this experience did not meet the mark for quality/superior sushi. The vibe, ambiance, overall service and presentation of the food was enjoyable, but unfortunately the sushi itself majorly downgraded my experience. I am fortunate to travel often and have had some phenomenal food experiences including high end sushi - this is definitely NOT it!! To put it plainly, the fish seemed fresh but had zero taste - as if it was all farm raised or engineered. The sashimi cuts dish completely exposed that - no sauces or rice to mask the complete lack of natural, high quality fish taste. It was truly an odd experience and did not compare to the ambience and overall vibe. I am not a food snob, but I know great quality, and this wasn't it. We each only took one bite of the sashimi cuts and sent it back. Our server didn't even ask what was wrong to attempt to correct or find out the concern. We had the Dinamita roll, spicy edamame and crispy salmon rice to start - all ok, but nothing exciting. Then we had the otoro and hamachi nigiri - these were good but not quality. Next we had the spicy tuna and hamachi roll - these were a unique presentation and the components of the roll made it tasty. The hamachi tiradito was not good at all, but my partner ate it and thought it was ok. Again, the flavor beyond what it was dressed in was not there and something about the texture was off too. My partner had the alligator bao and really enjoyed it and said it was the best thing he ate. I really wanted to enjoy this place, but they are fighting above their weight class in my opinion. I'd like to see them thrive, but based on this evening's experience, it wasn't favorable for a return visit. The auto 20% gratuity is also not copacetic for a two-top, but even more not mentioning it at all when handing over the POS device for payment was not in proper taste. Also the server assistant poured house water into our half filled glass of $6 bottled water. Attention to detail is missed, and the overall experience and quality of food doesn't match the vibe, price point or current social media hype. read more

So I really wanted this place to be great. I do love that it's got speakeasy vibes, but it is hard to overcome the food experience. To summarize, we ordered 5 small plates. The mushroom dumplings were the star of the show. The wagyu nigiri was really underwhelming. The overall presentation and ambiance was great, and the cocktail menu was worth it. Because of the food, I think our review is more like 3.4 stars. I don't think we've quite had an experience like this so it deserves 4 stars for now. Ambiance was 5 stars. I almost wish it was a speakeasy bar only with a simple more affordable Mexican menu. Located just behind tacos del cartel, the space is beautiful. Obviously you can tell the kitchen is shared with tacos del cartel. Service was really good, staff were attentive and explained dishes in detail. For me, honestly the food was just ok. Over priced, thick rice rolls with lots of imitation crab stuffed. I was underwhelmed. The best item On the menu is the mushroom dumplings in a miso butter. It was so delicious and such a flavor bomb. Really enjoyed that. Many of the rolls all tasted the same, mayonnaise intense, crunchy nonsense inside. Not a fan. read more

My husband and I went last night for dinner, and we absolutely loved it! The small intimate restaurant was absolutely breathtaking. My husband and I were sat right away and were quickly greeted by one of the managers on duty. He was very nice and attentive and asked if we would like still or sparkling water . Our waiter came shortly after and introduced himself and explained the menu , asked us to look over the drinks as well as the menu and came back about 5 min later. Which I thought was perfect. We ordered and had questions about our drinks and he answered them with ease. I felt like through the whole process everyone was very attentive. The food was beautiful and everything tasted amazing. First off the ambience was amazing, the duel concept of Hispanic up front, Japanese in the back is polarizing but in a good way. The room is beautifully crafted and designed so it's the perfect date spot, girls night out or even to bring the homies. Our server Christian did an amazing job being personable, explaining the craft and theme behind everything, and they have a bunch of little touches like giving everyone at the table a hot towel to start the experience. That's something you would rarely find even at a 5-star restaurant. The sushi was good, fish was fresh fresh, only thing was the lamb was rather dry but that's what we get for getting lamb at a seafood spot. Overall great time read more

You server and the restaurant we had to wait in RUINED our experience. Our reservation was at 8:30, and getting there at 8:32 they didn't grab us until almost past 9. Guess what we did? Sat at a bar, where the bartender gave us attitude because we didn't drink, while fear factor was on and we got to watch people eat worms and crickets for a half hour. Finally we make it inside. I tell the FOH manager/host of the first restaurant how DISGUSTING that was, and she laughed at us. I'm furious at this point. My girlfriend is allergic to soy. When I told our older, black male server who served the first table to the left as you walk in Thursday night- he rolled his eyes and was like "well this is sushi." I was like OKAY well let me know if items have SOY in them that we order. He made us feel like we were such a burden with this one question. He rolled his eyes at me when I asked about the mocktail and he was like I couldn't even tell you what it tastes like you'll just have to see or not see. Who speaks to a table like that? We ordered things throughout the night, and thank god for the very sweet shorter guy, maybe a food runner who kindly described everything. Our server messed up our order, forgot to put in our entire order of sashimi, brought out a fried rice app that we DIDNT order, then tried to make us pay for his mess up at the end. He was like I miss heard you I'm sorry, then we hear him LOUDLY yell- THE LADY CHANGED HER MIND. No we didn't- HE messed up our order the ENTIRE NIGHT. For the most delicious food this was THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER and I'm so mad I have half a mind to go in there and speak to the manager without my girlfriend today. UNACCEPTABLE.
