Statue about him

I had never walked through this park before and didn't even know there's one in Sacramento. I know of the one in San Jose which was also in downtown. This one is a big park and is near the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, one of the church I frequent. Today, there was a car show which looked like it was hosted by the Sacramento Lowrider's Association. The park itself looks nice with ample seating areas under shady trees. I've driven passed this park numerous times. When there isn't an event, it can be hit or miss with finding some peace and quiet while sitting and enjoying the park. Sadly, there's some homeless individuals who may be screaming or fighting one another. The park is also surrounded by other establishments such as a coffee place and a restaurant so it can be quite busy, not to mention the downtown traffic.

The tex Mex music festival brings the liveliest and one of the most exciting music to northern Cali. It transforms Sacramento into Texas. There's great Texas BBQ, vendors informational booths with a beer and wine garden.

A cold & frigid day in January 2018 - still quite a lot of homeless here with no place else to go.

Tragic, Sad Face Of An Abandoned Humanity Lost SITREP My yelpie Regina W. sums it up best in her pithy review-statement from August last year, "If you are looking for homeless people, this is a good place to find them at any given time." THE SETUP I will focus on the positive first: * Wednesday Morning Farmers Markets during the late Spring through the early Autumn months - keeps us city, county and state workers very happy to keep coming back to check out some fresh produce and great food truck options (from BBQ, to sandwiches, to tacos, etc.); and, * Friday Night Concerts - also during the warmer months - with lots of great local musician showcasesm coordinated by the outstanding promoter team of Jerry & Linda Perry - and other promoters - all cultivating a great local music scene with their musician discoveries - I absolutely love it. GLOOM, DESPAIR, AGONY But if you want your heart to break, if you want to see the direct results of an economy and country that create the conditions for a growing population of "throw-away people", then Cesar Chavez Plaza is this poor demographics hangout. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/cesar-chavez-plaza-sacramento?select=WcMNWbjUuSxjFaVQI-YJXg&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w * Lots of space to spread out; * Even though under the shadow of Sacramento City Hall, still a sanctuary for people to smoke their medical marijuana in peace without getting harassed (even though they are obviously in pain and need more medical & psychiatric condition-"appropriate" medications beyond just marijuana (like this tragic couple I met & befriended who are battling chronic pain); https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/cesar-chavez-plaza-sacramento?select=Q0XzNFZNjNhymRnfFoMKQQ&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w * And on balance, the plaza is just a nice place to sit & chill on the lawns, enjoying the sunbeams, and watching playful crows and squirrels tussle over crumbs. LA COSECHA Recently, La Cosecha restaurant anchored itself firmly on the western edge of the plaza, and it's a very popular & tasty place. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/cesar-chavez-plaza-sacramento?select=6WEnHWeKT3kAKv4sjeJukg&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w Our own Yelp Community Manager (CM) Alex L. even hosted a very well attended Yelp Elite Event (YEE) there. But it remains to be seen if the "water and oil" of urban dwellers vs. homeless encampments can mix well enough to not cause problems. REPULSIONS (Objective & Subjective) * I have friends who refuse to go to this park under any conditions because of the homeless. * I have more friends who refuse to patronize La Cosecha or visit the park because they don't want to park their cars along the perimeter of the block. And I'm not in a position to them not to because I've had my own car vandalized (smashed back passenger window) while parked on this block in the evening while I was at Temple Coffee. It's sad and I don't blame the homeless. I blame the country and a narcissistic local business development & city government culture that has exasperated this situation and only increased the problem two to three fold this past year with their greed for development money, by short-shifting the social service programs. Ce la vie. THE LOWDOWN Cesar Chavez Plaze is indeed a plaza of mixed enjoyments and issues.

This park is the heart of the downtown. Most of the events and functions occur in this park from farmers market to concerts. However, if you walk in this park on the weekdays or weekends when there is no major events, you'll find homeless people. It's sad but at the same time eyesore too. I don't like to walk in this park because of the homeless people. At times, they are sitting in groups.

OMG, let me see where do I begin..This was an evening to remember. So when I get here the concert it is in full swing. The music is jumping and there are literally people every where. The weather is perfect and lucky for me there's a parking garage right across the streets from the park. Just an FYI, after 5pm its only $5 to park in the garage. As for the park, I really couldn't say how big it was, because it was hard to see the whole thing due to the fact that there were so many people out here. People were everywhere, they brought chairs and blankets and was there just to enjoy great music eat, drink and relax. I met one of my closest girlfriends and we just chilled. We walked around for a bit to check out the food choices and the drink options. If you wanted beer or wine, you had to first purchase a token in one line. And then go to another to pick up your drink. The lines were long but they moved very quickly. The prices were reasonable, only $4 & $5 bucks for beer/ or wine. The food, well was not really me per say! I went with the street tacos (that was the name for them). They were extremely small and it was 2 for $5 bucks. I got the steak tacos with most of what I had no ideal what it all was. I asked if it was spicy and the young man said just a lil. My friend got the nachos which was $8 buck and the plate was rather big. They gave you plenty. As we were walking away I took one bite of one of my tacos and my mouth was on fire! I couldn't eat another bite. I wanted some fried fish, but that I didn't see/or smell out here. I saw people with Jimboy's tacos but I didn't see where they were selling them. I really didn't see a lot to choose from as far as food goes. They had the outdoor sweat box bathroom stalls set up for use. Something you will rarely see me get in. Lol The music was Reggae and one of the groups was ZFG. One of the guys from the group proposed to his girl..'SHE SAID YES'! I believe there were three groups total that preformed and I only got the name of this one (ZFG). It was all so great, it seem like everything was just perfect. This was my first time at Caesar Chavez Park and it was a nice experience. The CIP went on without any problems and to hear it was 7900 people that were there and that was a record breaker. Park was bigger than it looked I guess..Not bad..I can't wait to come back again. Hopefully before the summers over.

Play Structures: I was seriously impressed by the variety of equipment specifically designed for the 2-5 year old age range. It's hard to find parks that cater so well to that specific gap! Creative Designs: The creativity here is next level. The kids absolutely loved exploring the castle and the ship structures--it really sparked their imagination and kept them busy for a long time. Right next to the playground is a great duck pond. It was a huge hit with the kids and provided a nice, scenic break from the climbing and sliding. Even late in the day, the park felt welcoming and well-maintained. It's a perfect destination for a family outing where the kids can safely burn off some energy.

Just as with furry children, human ones also have tons of energy that must be let out. So instead of having them cooped up, I'd will myself to take them to the park even when I'm bone tired after a long week of work. William Land Park is THE best place to help kids burn off energy so they can simmer down and sleep well after they have all the fun. It's really not a bad thing, I don't want to sound like I'm begrudged to take my kids out to play, but you know how sometimes you just want to veg out at home after work and esp on weekends? Yup. But my wife's always right that it's better to just suck it up and take the littles out and let me run wild than to fight the inevitable and try to keep them occupied at home. So we make the trek and we're never disappointed, even when parking can be challenging (hint: don't go at peak times on the weekend, esp Saturday mid morning to early afternoon). With all that said, WLP is really a great place. It's huge, first of all, with a big free playground on the North West side of the park, then of course there's the Sacramento Zoo which is just the most iconic place in Land Park. Then for littles there's Fairy Tale Town which was really a hit with my kids when they were younger. And when they got older and wanted more excitement, Funderland was the place to be for several years with all the roller coaster and other amusement park rides that were good enough for their age when they still got the thrill of being up and down and thrown around on a coaster or a spinning tea cup or a rocking pirate ship. And it helps that both places are pretty affordable for a fun day out. What's impressive about Land Park though, is that there's something for everyone in this 166.5 acres regional park. I looked up some stats and it features 23 picnic areas, 2 softball fields, 1 lighted Little League field, 3 baseball fields, 2 bantam soccer fields, 1 full-sized soccer field, 1 basketball court, adventure play area (the free playground), tot play area with free wading pool (in the same area as the playground), an indoor community facility, several restrooms, several ponds, a 3.4 mile jogging trail, the Ampitheater, fee-based pony rides, and 5 garden areas including the WPA Rock Garden, 3 groves, 2 parking lots, the well loved Golf course, the Sac Zoo which my kids really loved as kids, Fairytale Town and Funderland as mentioned above. In fact, for awhile I was playing volleyball here every Saturday, it must've been a couple of years from spring through fall and even over the winter if the weather was good and the grass wasn't soggy/ground wasn't muddy from rain. I had a great time playing vball with young'uns half my age as well as those who were quite a few years older than me and yet were so fit they literally kept me on my toes. There were definitely some talented folks on the vball courts and it was all volunteer organized and free to join and play. I might have to go back to it before I'm totally out of commission. All in all, William Land Park is very unique and truly is one of Sacramento's most historic and special places. We drive by often, but don't go there enough, and really need to get out and get some fresh air and exercise on the beautiful grounds of this local gem.

By 12:50pm the rain was starting to pick up and we were almost running for cover. I had my raincoat on, but my husband only had his leather coat on. He was warm, but getting wet. He wished he had brough his umbrella. The park is very lush this time of year with a few puddles here and there on the paths. We though we were on the capital look, but realized that the loop is referring to the outer edge of the park, we started on the loop and then wove through the park, so I'm going to just review the park today and post pictures from the interior park. I really like the cactus garden. It's a little scary at times as the prickles are so large and my husband is worried if he walks by too close they will attack him. So, we kept our distance and skipped the close up shots. Today some of the cactus was in bloom which was pretty spectacular. I loved their orange color and brightness. They really popped. They do have a warning that says keep out of the Cactus garden so you are forewarned to stay away so you don't get poked. I took a picture of a cool tree. The top must have been cut at one time because now there is only a branch that goes over the path. It's fun to read all the tree tags and see what kind of trees growing in the park. They have two types of paths in the park, some that are paved and some that are possibly finely crushed rock. Both paths were a little puddly today, but not too back that you couldn't walk around the puddles. There are a few benches in the park. May of the ones under the trees are occupied by the unhoused population. The ones out in the open are usually vacant and used by local workers to enjoy some fresh air and have lunch outside. Come enjoy Capital Park. I suggest you take public transit here if you are visiting on a weekday as the parking is slim on the streets, but there are aways garages available. If you come on the weekends, there is much more parking on the streets. So, you have no excuse as to not enjoying this beautiful park.

We even came on a windy day, and it was still a wonderful place to be. It is so spacious that it's the perfect spot to fly kites. A few of us were flying kites together, and it was such a relaxing, heartwarming experience. It's incredibly family and dog friendly, super roomy, and has so much going on. Because it's so clean and well maintained, this might just become the park I bring my kids to most often, and it is definitely a top choice for hosting future family events! It is perfect for a workout, sports activities, or just letting the kids play. I love the layout, especially how they designed the two separate grass areas where one sits at a lower elevation, while the other is level with the rest of the park. But honestly, what really blew me away was the restroom. I know that sounds like an exaggeration, but I'm serious! So many park restrooms are cold, dark, dirty, and lacking privacy. This one felt downright luxurious. It is completely temperature controlled, which was especially nice since it was breezy outside! It was warm, well lit, exceptionally clean, and had absolutely no odor. It even sounded like it had a great ventilation system running. The only minor downside was the lack of toilet seat covers, but that's an easy fix. The entire park feels pretty new with a beautiful, modern design, conveniently located right behind the Sky River Casino. Highly recommend checking it out! Rate: 10/10
