The four square park features a play area, picnic facilities & a softball field with lots of trees and grass area. One circle around the park is about half a mile. A great park for the kids, dogs and family picnic/barbecue. While I love McKinley Park and William Land Park, East Portal Park is smaller with less car traffic. Easier to meet someone and walk your dogs.

Many years later, I bring my children here and now a few generations later my grandchildren enjoy this park. My dad volunteered at the library at the park for many years and we ended up holding his celebration of life here (both in the rose garden and inside library). I have years of memories of hanging out here using the swimming pool, climbing trees, playing tennis & I used to run around the park when I lived nearby. We had roses planted in the Rose garden for my grandmother, my aunt and a child who died at birth. However, when they were redoing the rose garden, we had to take the plaques with us and now I have my aunts and grandma's plaque in my backyard with the same rose from the original rose garden. Shortly before my mother passed, we brought her to this park in her wheelchair and sat under a tree, enjoying a picnic with three generations of us. Needless to say this park holds numerous cherished memories.

Interestingly, the Sacramento Street Railway Company built the park in 1871 to attract people to take its trains. Then the park became a recreational area around the train line and continued to serve as a gathering spot for the residents in this neighborhood and the greater Sacramento community. Recently, we visited again to hang out with friends who wanted to meet up and have our kids play together and get out their wiggles while we chat and catch up. After the kids played for some time at the (new to us) playground, we walked over to enjoy the pond and to take a walk over to the Rose Garden. There's a path that surrounds the pond so you can get exercise with a view. We saw a lot of ducks and geese that day. Please don't feed them. They were friendly and very used to humans. After hanging out w/said friends of the fowl flavor for a few minutes, we walked towards the Rose Garden to enjoy the beauty of the roses and to people watch as they get their pictures taken and to hang out some more. Overall, I enjoyed visiting McKinley Park again, I really should come down here more often as it's a pretty great park, so big it takes up a whole city block and there's just so much nicely landscaped grounds, plant life, wildlife. It also offers a bunch of facilities to include a community pool, basketball court, a community center, picnic areas w/tables, several sports fields, plus tennis and volleyball courts. A lot offered here in one location!

We can get competitive and give each other some good exercise. The other feature we like about this park besides the walking trail, the tall oak trees that give it a secluded oasis feel, and the play structure, is the exercise equipment side of the park, on the southeast corner. My kids like to get on the balance beam and try to walk across it quickly and try to push each other off. My daughter used to be really good on monkey bars and she'd climb those over and over too. Good times. We've also met quite a few nice neighbors here just by chatting it up, otherwise people keep to themselves in this area, but it is good to make some new friends and watch out for each other. A nice park to create your own experiences and memories! Just remember to use the bathroom before you come here as there's no restroom facilities here which is the one negative.

The play structures are great for littles (I'd say 2 to 10), there's shaded areas to sit, and it's always clean and well cared for. There's a workout area for the adults, too, and if you keep your eyes peeled there's a fairy door hiding. My only gripe - and honestly, it's a big one! - is that there are no restrooms. If those were added this would be a perfect spot. But as is, it's pretty damn good and we're super happy to have it in the neighborhood.

I spent almost $40 on it so it wasn't cheap like the ones you see at the river given out for free for "safety." They would not let my kid wear this life jacket because they said it wasn't "whatever approved." It's a billion times better then what they offer at the river and it's a life jacket for Christ sake. Like anything is better than nothing! And again it was a million times better than the cheap ones they put out at the river. How can that be ok, but mine wasn't?

We went to a church picnic recently that was held at Tahoe Park. It was a brisk and very windy day,…read morebut the sun was shining and it was a mild day so it was still a great day for a picnic at the park. The kids had a great time. Tahoe Park is huge. It's between 59th and 61st St going east and west and between 8th and 11th Ave going north and south, and it is almost 18 acres big according to the City's website. There are soccer fields, a baseball diamond, a full basketball court, a smaller but adequate kids playground, 2 actually, one bigger, and one for smaller kids. In the summer time, the swimming pools will be open, so that's a great facility for hot weather fun. There is also a big gazebo with tables and seating on the side closest to where we saw kids playing soccer. We hung out closer to the picnic table area since we were grilling up some burgers and hotdogs, and there were several picnic tables to sit at and plenty of room. Although that area isn't very shaded. Our church reserved the tables, but it wasn't at the gazebo so it was a bit hotter where we were picnicking, but since it was so windy that day, it wasn't hot at all. It was the perfect day for flying kites so the kids did that for quite some time. Super fun for them to try to figure out how to get the kites to catch the wind and keep afloat. There's a set of bathrooms near the playground but I didn't use them so I don't know if they were clean or not. All in all, this is a nice park that I've just never been to, guess I keep frequenting the same ones that are familiar to me, but this is an underrated park and it's in a safe residential area, so it's a great place for a BBQ or a picnic or a party. I'm sure we'll be back.

Tahoe Park is one of our favorite places to visit!…read more We've lived in the area for almost six years now, and we absolutely love coming here. In the summer, they host food trucks on the last Friday of the month, which is always a treat. The park has lots of shady areas, two playgrounds (one for bigger kids and a smaller one for toddlers), and a track for walking or running. You'll also find fields for soccer, volleyball, and baseball, plus BBQ areas you can reserve. The neighborhood is safe and very family-friendly. One of the best parts is the public swimming pool that opens during the summer. They charge $3 or $4 per person, which is very reasonable. Just a heads-up--this year, they're only accepting cash at the pool. It would be helpful if they posted a sign in the parking lot to let families know. I've seen a few frustrated parents who had to unload all the kids and gear, only to find out inside that they couldn't pay with card. Despite that hiccup, it's a wonderful park for families and we're grateful to have it nearby!
