I dined at Central as part of a party of four, all out-of-towners. The food was exquisite. The service was friendly, attentive, and flawless. The place is charming and attractive. Among us, we had four of the regular entrees, Wood-Fired Gulf Catch, Gulf Shrimp Thai Currey, Roasted Half Chicken, and Eggplant Cannelloni. The seasonal field pea & collard green succotash that accompanies the fish dish (Red Snapper) was fresh and flavorful. Thinly sliced eggplant replaced the cannelloni pasta. Reviews suggest this is the best place in Montgomery. I have not tried other places, but this one would be hard to beat! read more

The food was really good-- salmon, lamb, risotto all delicious. The waiter (Izzy) was also great. Very friendly and professional and not intrusive. The decor on the inside is really charming. The bad: The parking! They don't have their own lot and there isn't much on-street parking available. My husband dropped us off and then circled for a long while trying to find something. I have eaten meals at fine dining establishments in most major cities all over the country. And I am not sure that I have ever had a better meal or experience than I had at this restaurant. I dined alone so I elected to sit at the bar. The bartender recommended the Lion's Tail cocktail. It was wonderful...a variety of flavors. Sweet, sour, and bourbon. I also got the filet and brussel sprouts. The filet was easily competitive with any that I have had. Tender and cooked exactly as I ordered. The bartender also recommended the brussel sprouts. I believe the sides were meant to be shared but the brussel sprouts were so good that I ate them all. And the dessert...the chef's beignets. I made myself miserable. Absolutely amazing. A must stop restaurant in downtown Montgomery. It is part of "The Alley" district in downtown, which is full of shops restaurants, bars, and the Legacy museum. I started off with a 16 oz can of fat orange cat white stout - so good! I wasn't extremely hungry, so I concentrated on the apps. Had the Fett Sow (fat pig) fries. These are thin strips of fried pork belly with a side of peach chutney for dipping - incredibly tasty! Along with this I had the Central fries. These were hand cut fries with a pinch of roasted garlic, parsley, and malt vinegar. Aahhh, such a beautiful thing! I chose to sit outside and dine on this beautiful spring evening. What a fabulous place! Service: Fantastic. Never felt rushed, we were checked on an appropriate amount of times and the small things, water refilled, plates removed, etc were done subtlety and without interruption. Ambience: definitely upscale and casual. People dressed up or in t-shirts and jeans, big tables and small, a bar area that stayed classy. Lighting, tables and style all very cool and contemporary. An open kitchen area was fun to watch from the table but it didn't come across like a Waffle House. Food: Amazing. Had the flatbread and pimento cheese appetizer that was plenty for two. Enjoyed the tres majors and filet for entrees and a side of fried brussel sprouts that again were easily a two person serving. The meat was cooked to perfection, the garnishes and presentation were on point and the brussel sprouts served in a dish with honey on the bottom that took a great side to the next level. Truly a Superlative Dining Experience in Montgomery, Alabama. Our group of 4 enjoyed a 'Tapas' collection of Appetizers, of which all were deliciously inventive. Grilled Oysters with a requested menu change from the Pimento Cheese Sauce to a Garlic Sauce, Lamb Ribs and Grouper. We also tried the Bolognese. We finished with Blueberry Cheesecake, Beignets and the Mile High Pie. The only miss was the Pie, as it was frozen solid rendering it inedible. read more

The staff was very friendly and helpful from the start. They provided excellent suggestions of the many good looking meals, and I went with it. Started with the aged pimento cheese, had to try it and took most home with me, but it had a solid depth of flavor to it. There was a pleasant smoked paprika spice that I couldn't get enough of. It's a great appetizer to share and pick at. The main course was the short rib dish which was very good. The grits had the consistency of mashed potatoes, but the flavor as a whole was unique. According to the bartender, everyone loves this dish, and I have to agree; it's solid. I'd probably try the pork chop next, since it looked equally pleasing from a carnivore point of view. Now the star was the side of brussel sprouts! Balanced sweet, salty, and savory flavors that had you digging to the bottom of the dish each time to get each drop of honey. Excellent side! The new menu and entrees are no where near as good as their previous entrees. The quantity and quality is subpar and we are really disappointed about this! Central has always been our "go to" place for meeting friends and celebrating special occasions. My wife and I had dinner there last week and we were not satisfied with our meal, the very first time this has ever happened at Central and we've been going there for years. The food was bland and not as flavorful, the portion size was very small, and the prices have increased! My wife received 5 each small scallops in a bland sauce for $41, and I received a small piece of Sea Bass in an "okay" sauce with four pieces of asparagus for $48. The She Crab Bisque wasn't anything special and it was an unusually small cup for $12. Regrettably, we will be taking Central off our list and meeting friends and celebrating elsewhere. Dear Central, get your old chef back and stick with the delicious dishes that were plentiful and very tasteful. This is what made Central the extra special place it was. read more

The pimento cheese was very cold, and the dipping "crackers" they came with it were sheets of brittle bread. Was not a fan of that. The oysters were OVERPOWERED by the cheese. The sweet and spicy salad was pretty good, very strong in flavor. Braised pork was lovely, would highly recommend. The crisps made it great. Sweet sauce, good grits underneath. The mousse cake was not very good honestly. Just a bit bland, but still very delicious compared to other mousse I've had. Key lime pie is best ever! Was a pretty good place. 4/5 read more

Impressive, fine dining in downtown Montgomery. Although pricey ($135 for dinner for two, one shared appetizer, two glasses of wine and one martini) we felt it was worth it. We ordered brussels sprouts (a vegetable menu side item) as an appetizer. It was deliciously browned and sweet. For entrees, my wife had braised beef, served in a wonderful sauce over pasta. I had pork chops, which were perfectly tender, with a strawberry glaze, potato cake and vegetable. We were both very satisfied. The service was attentive, and, amidst Covid, we usually tip 25% to thank the servers who risk their own health to serve us. Bottom line? I recommend Central for a special night out. Ours came as part of a two-night, three-day visits to the Rosa Parks and Legacy Museums and the Justice and Peace Center, which were both impressive and moving. It was a wonderful getaway for an old couple that has been penned in by the pandemic. read more
