We hired Make It Right Construction for a fairly extensive kitchen refacing of the cabinet doors…read moreand drawer fronts, building a new island, installing quartzite countertops, and replacing an existing oven and wine refrigerator with new drawers and cabinetry. The quality of the finished work was exceptional. The refaced cabinets are beautiful, the new island came out beautifully, and the quartzite fabrication and installation look terrific. The new cabinetry where the appliances had been blends seamlessly with the rest of the kitchen. There was also some plumbing that needed to be redone along the way, and they took care of that as well. We especially want to recognize a few people. Ivan, the cabinet maker, did beautiful work. There were a lot of details in the cabinetry that mattered to us, and his craftsmanship and attention to those details really show in the finished kitchen. Manuel and Luis, who did the painting, were terrific as well. They were careful, meticulous, and clearly took pride in getting everything just right. In fact, that was our experience with the crew in general. Everyone who worked in our home was polite, considerate, accommodating, and as unobtrusive as you can reasonably be while tearing apart someone's kitchen. Whenever something needed adjusting or redoing, they took care of it and kept working until we were happy with the result. The one area where the experience could have been a little smoother was communication about scheduling. Since we stayed in the house during construction, it would have helped to have more advance notice about who was coming and when, and the project did take longer than we originally anticipated. But those were small inconveniences during the process rather than problems with the finished work. And the finished work is what we'll be living with for years. We couldn't be happier with it. The craftsmanship is excellent, the kitchen is beautiful, and when something wasn't quite right, they made it right. Five stars.

Impressive work and wonderful collaboration!…read more Make It Right Carpentry helped us replace our 30-year-old, 30 sq ft rotting wood landing with a 75 sq ft steel-frame deck of our own design. From initial consultation to final completion, we were impressed with how co-owners Wilber Sr & Jr worked with us to understand our options and to resolve challenges as they emerged (as they always do!). We were wowed when the crew took down our old landing in 25 minutes and planted solid footings for the new one in a matter of hours! We appreciated both Wilbers making sure we got the ideal railing for enjoying the view of our backyard. Wilber Sr is a true craftsman and our new Fortress steel frame deck with Cypress Timbertech (boards) exceeds all our expectations. It's beautiful! We now have a comfortable and inviting outdoor space to eat, relax, read, nap, hang out with friends and literally smell the roses. Thank you, Wilber Sr, Jr, and crew, for adding this wonderful outdoor room to our home! We enthusiastically recommend Make It Right Carpentry!

Nothing of that happened whatsoever with Larry. He created a bedroom, bathroom, laundry, storage and corridor for me so a pretty decent size job. He's a general contractor but one that works too, in fact does all the work except for the specialist stuff like plumbing, electrical, tiling. For all that stuff he has a fantastic crew that he brings in. I didn't have a problem with any of them at all, and importantly they all did first class work. Not only am I super happy with the end result, but it's really the little things that made a big difference like cleaning up the site at the end of each day which minimized the amount of dust settling in the house, arriving on time and on the days he said he would, when I wasn't happy with some part of the job (which wasn't very often at all) he would fix it straight away and on top of all that, was just so polite and considerate to deal with. I can't recommend him highly enough. It was a pleasure working with him. In fact, this is the third time he's worked on a project for me so that says something about his quality and work ethic.

Within a few hours of contacting him, Larry was at our door to appraise the job and give us a rough estimate. Larry always showed up when he said he would, and was always within the timeline of when he said a phase of the work would be completed. Our job was a kitchen and bath renovation. Larry is a perfectionist in how he expects his work to look. Larry took care of all the details, for example: he applied for building permits, and made sure all work was done within city "codes". Each phase of his work easily passed inspection. He had an excellent knowledge of which materials to use and we were always pleased with the finished product. Overall if you are looking for a good and reliable general contractor, Larry is your man. He is one honest and hardworking guy. We have and will continue to recommend him to any friend or family member who is looking to have any contracting work done.

We put our house on the market this past May and prior to that, at our realtor's recommendation, we hired HomeGuard to do the home inspection. HomeGuard claims to be the biggest real estate inspection company in Northern California. Our inspection by Tyler M James came back with minor repairs recommended at around $3k The buyers we chose wanted to do their own inspection. Their report came up with major damage approximating $15,000. So we got in touch with HomeGuard and asked why is the buyers inspection showing more damage. So HomeGuard sent John P Manville to do a re- inspection John had found extensive damage. So then had to renegotiate and extend close of escrow. We credited the buyer $15,000. HomeGuard did refund us the cost of the inspection, but that didn't make up for the time and stress of renegotiations. The deal could have fallen through. I think HomeGuard should have reimbursed us the $15k that we had to credit the buyer because of their negligence. Also we sent a email to James Steffenson Jr. (President) and James Hessling(CFO and CEO). Never got a response from them. I'm sure Tyler M James is still employed there doing bad inspections The bottom line is HOMEGUARD INSPECTIONS CANNOT BE TRUSTED! This one was caught, but how many others haven't been. This could open you up to a lawsuit. BEWARE! Sent

He overheard me sharing my project, and introduced himself. From there, he had a simple and straight-forward bid process, showed up to meetings on time prepared, and is a very good communicator. He's friendly, fun to work with, and no-nonsense. More than anything, he cares to get everything right and safe. Through our months of work together he would listen to my ideas, always working with me to make my dream home. All of my questions were treated with respect, and nothing was left undone. His team was creative and positive as they navigated any unforeseen hiccups. Most of all, every member of the team showed up with an open mind and integrity in their work. In working with a contractor, one has to be adaptable to their schedules. From the top-down, these are blue-collar guys, giving 100% everyday physically. As owners, it is our job to treat them as the peers they are: they should be allowed to take family vacations, pivot to other clients while subcontracting takes place, and they can get sick just like anyone. Marin is a very wealthy area, and I did not take for granted that these gentlemen would get up at the crack of dawn to be cognizant of commute traffic, to be most efficient with their time on the job. Similar to other counties, the permit process stinks. But the permit process should be no reflection of the contractors. Both contractor and owner have to be highly proactive in the permit process, given the broken system we are forced to use. I have already referred Brownstein Construction to family and neighbors. And I will certainly use them for future projects.

Unfortunately I would not recommend Brownstein Construction nor would I choose to work with them again. We had to wait 2 months for the County of Marin to issue the permit. The project started in July. We had a deadline for the project of October 15. Then we moved the deadline to October 30 then to November 1 then to November 15th. Despite the apartment not being ready I had to move in about November 20th. The guys had made a big show of coming down and working for a couple of days before i moved in but to my surprise they left without installing the shelves in any of the largest cabinets, not the kitchen or the linen cabinets. I wrote Clark and said the rolling retractable shelves aren't installed and he wrote me back saying watch a You Tube video and do it yourself. I lived here in the apartment with all the boxes containing kitchen items piled in my living room for well over a month. Also I couldn't put anything away into the linen closet. They did not come back to work for a long time after that. They did not come back to work for a long time after that. Then just 1 man would show up to work for some hours and then week or 2 later some other guy would come and work a little. There were meetings Clark scheduled with me for which he did not show up. One time I waited for 45 minutes before texting him and about 45 minutes later he called to say he is not coming to the meeting he is doing something else. I was ghosted by Clark more than once. Luckily I came to the apartment the day they were laying the floors and they were laying the floor crosswise the way you walk in the apartment. When we talked about the job Clark told what they could and would do and then did not do it. They said we can put that cable box in the closet behind the tv and no one will ever see it and then did not do that. Oh we will have a cleaning person come and clean it up before you move in and then took that back.. From the beginning of talking about the project i said i want cedar shelves in the linen closet and into the project he said no. I wanted a ceiling fan and had bought it and he said no after saying yes. As Christmas approached I said whatever is left to do please do it before i go out of town on December 18 and as the day approached Clark said they, or 1 of them, could only come on December 18 so I changed my plans for sake of getting the project done. Still it was i think January the 23 when I was finally able to shut the door behind Clark. That day he kept saying "It's always a rough road. It's always a rough road." and made a big deal about shaking hands. The work is ok. There was nothing complicated. It was completely straight forward. The tile in the primary bathroom is a little uneven and around the shower they did the seams with some silver joiner. It looks cheap and I would not have chosen that look and have never seen that silver capping used anywhere before. The grout on either edge of the silver capping is at uneven depths and needs to be cleaned all the time or it looks bad.

A rite of passage for new homeowners is to deal with a major repair. Less than a year after moving in, heavy rains led to water from outside making its way inside without invitation. Noticing some damaged wood that was likely to blame, we called on Nelson to help. Of the various contractors we solicited for quotes, Nelson was the most through and punctual. And throughout, Nelson and team were reliable, communicative and provided expert work for a job which started as a "minor" siding repair but expanded (to our dismay) in scope as increasing amounts of rotting, structural wood from the previous owner was uncovered. Although it was disconcerting to see how much damage we would need to address, Nelson was sympathetic and assured us that it would be straightforward to fix and advised on a couple of different approaches, which we agreed to. His team arrived on time every day and worked around weather conditions to perform carpentry, waterproofing, and offered continuous updates. We also hired Nelson's team to paint afterwards, and are very happy with the results. By the end we started dreaming about other projects or repairs we could accomplish and started getting his feedback on those as well! One thing we learned is that it's necessary to make sure the discussions are thoroughly documented-we had a couple of misunderstandings about what was included or not after verbal discussions, which we either resolved through the contract, or realized after the fact that it was something discussed but never written down so we let it go. But making the agreement itself was a breeze, and Nelson is good humored, flexible and was easy to work with at all of the stages of the process. We would certainly work with him on future repairs.

The company is professional and follows the rules set forth by the city of SF to ensure that our bathroom was up to code. The quality of their work is really good and they built it out exactly as we had wanted it per the specs of our design partner. What I especially liked about them was that they had a detailed project plan and was transparent as to the cost of each step. They also were very timely in their construction, which as you know, with it being your primary bathroom, is extremely important. There were a couple of issues with communication that we had during the project as well as a couple of billing items, but once we talked to the owner about this over a call we were able to clear things up to everyone's satisfaction. I can tell you that it is definitely not as easy to resolve these types of issues with many other contractors. Our bathroom has been in use for over 18 months now and there are no issues with any of their work and I'm sure that if there were, they would honor their workmanship guarantee. They are highly recommended.
