Definitely not on the fence about Clough Construction! Clough just completed building our backyard fence and every aspect was perfect. They provided us a detailed and very competitive bid. They showed up when they said they would and kept to the schedule. The quality of the work by Raphael and the hardworking and efficient crew was exceptional - including dealing with a few unexpected conditions. I didn't think I'd ever be excited with the end product (it's a fence!) but I am. read more

We feel very lucky to have found Clough Construction after moving back to Marin. Scott arrived and set us in the right direction in what was needed to replace a fence. The crew who took the project from start to the finish were wonderful to work with, and it was completed and looks great. A year later we added a puppy to our family. We called Scott for his expertise in what we needed to do to prevent the dog from squeezing through the older fence that came with the property. The project was completed by Quinn and Salvador. The dream team. They knew what was needed and made these changes look like they had always been there. Kudos to Clough. Highly recommend them. read more

Five stars isn't enough for Clough. Everyone, from Sessi answering the phone the first time, to Deanne walking us through the process, to Scott and our amazing crew: Quinn and Lowell, it's been a white glove service from beginning to end. They took care of everything; permits, inspections, you name it. Quinn and Lowell always arrived on time, were respectful of our home and never left a mess, but most of all, the incredible attention to detail and superior craftsmanship has given us a deck that's not only functional, but one that we are excited to showcase. We couldn't recommend them enough and know for certain we'll be calling up again for more projects in the future. read more

We just finished having our magnificent deck finalized from Clough Construction. I must say that the experience with Quinn and Salvador was spectacular. Their professionalism and knowledge was top-of-the-line! Every aspect of their work was accomplished on the highest level of perfection. They took the time to achieve the highest level of quality in their workmanship. I cannot say enough great things about those men. And additionally, working with Deanne and Scott Clough just added to the perfection of the overall experience. I had worked diligently searching to find a good fit for us to work on this project. It took time to find the right fit. The beauty of Clough Construction is in the tenure they have achieved working specifically on decks, fences and gates for 30+ years, and gives them the specific know-how of how to accomplish their finished product with every conceivable detail important to proper construction. My second major project in three years has just been completed by Clough Construction, and I am thrilled! It includes a new fence encircling my front yard, a large front porch, entryway and arbor, and a small back porch, as well as two gates and three sets of steps. The foreman, Quinn, and workers Salvador and Maynor, were so professional, competent, hardworking, courteous and friendly - it truly was a pleasure to have them around! I can say the same about every other individual involved, who participated at various times. My experience with Clough Construction has been extremely positive, and I highly recommend them! read more

A few days ago, Clough finished building a small deck for me next to my kitchen. The two-man crew, Quinn and Salvadore, were a superb team. They were in synch every step of the way, openly discussing the best approach to each stage of the build and the best solution to any technical problems that arose. What they left me was a superb piece of work, a flawless redwood deck that, frankly, I've been afraid to even step on because I hate the idea of walking on art. I know that reluctance will fade, but after seeing all the pains Quinn and Salvadore went to while constructing my new deck, I'm going to treat and maintain it, and enjoy it as lovingly as I can going forward. Everybody at Clough, including its principals, Scott and Deanne, was great to work with---approachable, personable, professional. I'd happily recommend the company to anybody who asks. read more

Clough Construction has done three jobs for me over the years, so it's probably about time I gave them a review. First off the Deanne and the office staff are super helpful. Despite a busy schedule they always find time to help me out sooner rather than later. Scott Clough then comes out both to survey the job to give a bid and then on the day the crew arrives to make sure everyone is on the same page. In the past they have built an amazing fence along the street that still gets the attention of people walking by and rebuilt part of a failing deck along a steep hill. This most recent crew of Quinn and Salvadore were efficient and professional. They replaced a bunch of dry rot under a deck and just looking at the result warms my heart (homeowners with dry rot will understand). The guys were friendly, hard working, and completed the job in record time. The clean up was also excellent which in my experience not a lot of construction companies do well. Hire Clough Construction if you want the job done right. read more

We are so happy with our decks that Clough built for us. We had an old rotten cantilever deck off the top level of our house about 30 feet above the ground that needed replacement. We worked with an architect and engineer to design a massive three level deck to replace it. When we bid it out, many contractors said that the job was too difficult due to the terrain and narrow streets where our house was located. Some did not even respond. This did not deter Scott at Clough Construction. He gave us a very fairly priced bid for the job. During the whole process the Clough team was very professional. We have had other contractors do decent sized jobs at our house and I can definitely say that the Clough crew, led by Rick, was the most professional and least disruptive to us and our neighbors. Not to mention that the quality of the work is amazing. The attention to detail and ability to account for a few inconsistencies in the initial plans that we provided to them show that they really know what they are doing. We will definitely be working with Clough again in the future. read more

Just had Clough do yet another project for us. Over the years they've built 2 back decks (we're 3 stories off the ground), a gorgeous enclosure for our trash and yard waste cans (in fact, some neighbors have copied it!), interior moulding, and last week a small but necessary deck for our solar project. One thing with Clough, we're NEVER concerned that the project isn't going to be built correctly and never feel the need to check on the workmen. It's a pleasure dealing with the owners, Deanne and Scott. Obviously we're big fans and highly recommend Clough Construction. read more

This is a great company to work with. From the time you call until the project is complete there is great communication. Scott came out, looked over my project and made some suggestions I had not thought of. (saved me some $$) Our fences were over 50 years old. Design was on point and keeping with the theme and design of the house. The crew arrived on time every day and it was the same guys from beginning to end. We personally made sure they had plenty of liquids to drink as it was VERY warm. Great quality, top end materials, Awesome crew that kept the job-site clean every day. Not the cheapest but not expensive when you factor in the above. to me a quality company with superior products and a team that enjoys their trade. True craftsman. Biggest drawback is you will need to pull permit for the project. I live within city limits of Novato and it took 4 weeks to get my permit. Was not too difficult to do. The team at the city was a great help in this. But, back to Clough. I really can't say enough good about them. Thank you everyone there. read more

Clough just completed a project to replace and improve our deck at our home in San Rafael. We provided Scott Clough with sketches before getting started and Scott worked with his drafting and design team at Draftech of Marin County to produce permitting and construction documentation that reflected our design goals. Scott's cost estimates used in contracting were accurate and Clough saw the project through a successful permitting and inspection process with the city. Builders Quinn, Salvador and Oscar did an excellent job and we are very happy with the result. We enjoyed the process and really appreciated frequent communication with the crew along the way. We also appreciated communication with Deanne in Clough's front office during the process so there were no surprises in terms of schedule or cost. I definitely recommend Clough Construction. read more

Kudos to Scott Clough, and his talented team, Fecundo and Hugo, for truly transforming the look and feel of our Tam Valley creek-side home, which we affectionately call "Walden West." We love our new entry gate and fence, and the possibilities it creates for the adjacent creek views and further outdoor decoration and furnishing. Clough construction replaced and expanded the deck around our pool (and finished about a week ago).. They did a fabulous job and worked with us on the plans and minor changes as the job progressed. The workmanship was superb as usual, as they'd replaced/expanded another part of the deck about 6 years ago. For this job their bid was almost identical with another bid we sought. Quinn, Maynor and Salvador were a pleasure to work with-- personable, skilled and efficient, considerate of the havoc any such project can cause (and it was over the holidays), kept us informed routinely, were responsive as questions/preferences arose, and thoroughly cleaned up the worksite daily before leaving. This level of quality and professionalism is part of what we paid for and in our minds, well worth it! read more

My family and I worked with Deanne and Scott to build a new fence/gate for the front of our house. Both them and their crew were extremely professional and overall delightful to work with. The fence turned out exactly how we pictured and continues to hold up great. It also felt good to work with/support individuals who are dedicated to sustainability, and clearly passionate about the work that they do. Clough Construction did an amazing job on our back deck.  From design to execution it was a great experience!  From the first meeting with Scott the decision was clear to use Clough. Lowell and Quinn were super helpful walking us through their process during construction.  They are skilled craftsmen and have a great sense of humor. They had great communication and always kept us in the loop at modifications needed to be made based on the uniqueness of the space.  They had a great rapport with the city inspector which made the inspections sail right through.  The deck is seriously built to last.  We appreciated the professionalism and love the new beautiful deck!  We would use them again without question read more

Clough has now done two large and a couple of small jobs for us - first was a 6ft high fence along 200+ feet of our yard, including a steeply sloped side fence. Scott was great about recommending which style, and the crew were fast, professional, and left the site cleaner than they found it. They built a couple of gates in the fence, including one in a small section of existing fence and they did a great job of matching the style. The second large job was our deck - they removed an old deck, put piers in the ground for the new one (25 ft above a slope, so they had to go into a steep slope and drill into rock to ensure it was solid and would hold up to years of wear, tear and the occasional earthquake), and built a new deck. We loved the whole experience - they helped us with choosing materials - Deanne walked us through all the wood and composite decking choices, styles etc. at their office, where they have a lot of built sections at the side so you can see how they deal with the weather - and advised us on design. Their crew were again professional, communicated clearly, turned up on time and left the site very clean and organized. They happily worked carefully around my beloved redwood and were happy to resist any trimming so the deck really feels as if it is in the tree. I'll post some photos, but I have to say, it's gorgeous! A few weeks before the installation was finished, Deanne called to say that a new product had come out that was similar to the one we chose, but nicer and she suggested we go to a lumber yard to see it. She was right - it's a better texture and we are very happy to have gone with the faux wood so we don't have to stain/finish the deck. They charged only the marginal difference in the cost of the material for the change. The railings are redwoods and look great. The little jobs they did - shoring up a structurally suspect pillar under our house and straightening and reinforcing a small wobbly deck, we done quickly and well. I highly recommend Clough - there are very very few times I have dealt multiple times with any construction firm and found my opinion high and rising the whole time. If all contractors were as lovely, professional, skilled and ethical as Scott, Deanne and their team, services like Yelp wouldn't have to exist. It's rare to have such a consistently great experience. read more

Clough Construction built a side porch for us. As always, they were professional and did a great job. Lowell and Quinn were wonderful at communicating during the whole project. Wonderful job. On time, professional and very nice to work with. Love the new fence and gate.

Our house has 1000 sq ft of decking over three levels and we have lived here for over 15 years.  I have I used Clough Construction in the past for smaller maintenance projects, to replace beams and gates, and they have always been excellent. So when it came time to do an expansive project to replace all of the old railings with modern Feeney cable railings, as well as rebuild two sets of stairs between our upper, middle and lower decks.  It was an easy decision to call Clough Construction for the project.  I did not even get any other bids, as I already had confidence in their work quality!  The Clough Construction team are very easy to work with and put clients first at every step of the way.  Deanne follows up on a regular basis to make sure you are happy and Scott is flexible to work with as project changes inevitably come up. The team were onsite for 6 weeks as it was a significant amount of work.  The job site was always kept clean, Quinn and Lull's work ethic was exception and their attention to detail was second to none.  They really are master carpenters. We have had many compliments on the finished work and could not be happier with it.  Whenever I need any decking or fencing work, I always call Clough! read more

I recommend clough for their though rough construction to build a fence around our house that looks beautiful and is very functional. it enhances the beauty of the redwoods in Mill valley and with surrounding park while protecting our privacy and safety. Braulio and his whole crew build the fans in nine days or so quickly then I thought and also thought of ingenious ways to let the water of the rivulette glow thru a gate. Clough Construction did an excellent job on our deck remodel, here in San Rafael. We were confident from the start that our project would be done correctly and without worry. Quinn and Lowell, our team, are both highly skilled, hard-working, positive, and focused on every detail. They were a pleasure to have here. The site was cleaned up every day, and they even, when possible, kept access open to our yard for our dogs. Clough is everything you want in a service provider and more. Not only did they do an amazing job replacing our deck (which is over 30' above the ground on a steep hill), but they were super pleasant to work with. I first heard of Clough Construction because my neighbor used them for a fence. The fence was solid, good-looking and went up quickly. A couple of years later, I googled Fence Builders in Marin and they came up again. I called, got courteous service by Deanne and Ann Marie. Scott came out and gave me a bid within a day or two. I got three other bids, which were much lower. The first guy, disappeared after the bid and I have no idea what happened there; he was way too cheap though. The second and third guys, nearly the same thing...hello? Every time I called the Clough office, I got a response. Because I have a big dog, I needed a good fence and I needed it soon. That was another thing, though busy, Clough could fit me in their schedule soon. So, I sucked it up and paid the money but I got EXCELLENCE. Rafael and the team are the award-winning performers who showed up on time everyday, got the job done quickly, professionally and perfectly. My fence is stunning...solid, strong, attractive and will last for decades. I don't regret it for a minute, because you do get what you pay for and any deck or fence, better be done right. I consider every dollar I paid to Clough, an excellent investment in my home. read more

Where do I begin? I am not sure I have enough words to adequately describe how completely and utterly DELIGHTED I am with EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of the remodel that Clough Construction did on my decrepit old 1960's deck and railing. To be clear, we did not hire them for our job. This review is simply of their estimate/prices. I've looked at their work on their website, and from what I can tell they do excellent work. We had them come out to give us an estimate...now honestly Marin prices are outrageous to begin with... of the 10 quotes I got for our fence job, the 7 highest were from local companies, and the 3 best were from out of town. Go figure! Shows that people in our area simply are not willing to shop around...and trust me, there are plenty of good contractors that will come to Marin to do quality work. So I told them up front that I was concerned about the prices I'd received, and he offered to show me his "spreadsheet" so I could understand what his costs were. I said great! When I got the estimate, I was floored. He built in a line item for "profit." Ok, fine, every company deserves to make a profit. But then every other line item on the sheet was inflated. Labor costs that were outrageous, "company overhead" of $1,000, and even the materials cost was slightly higher than I'd priced on my own from a reputable lumber yard. Needless to say, I did not hire them. However, I did get a call 2 weeks later from their office. She was very nice, at least to start, and I tried to avoid a long discussion about the price, and told her simply that I felt the quote was unreasonable. But, she kept pressing me for more information, so eventually I calmly explained to her that while I have no problem with them charging whatever prices they are able to charge...I personally was not willing to get Marin gouged and I would not pay those prices, since other companies were willing to do it for more than 25% less. She didn't like that so much...but she asked, so I told her my honest thoughts. Finally, our sister in law told us that they had received a disturbingly high quote from Clough on their fence. I won't go into the details about it, but let's just say that it was over $12,000 for a fence that should in no way have cost more than $6,000. Bottom line, I'm sure Clough does great work. And if you're rich, you should hire them. If not, contact me for better options. There are plenty of folks in the east bay or further north that will come and do quality work for more reasonable prices. (Their price for a simple fence was over $55 per foot. Compare that with $39 per foot which we actually paid. And in other parts of the country it's standard to pay less than $30 per foot) read more
