The crew was respectful, diligent, pleasant, and very very expert. They didn't mind me looking over at them whenever I wanted. They completely removed my old 320sf deck, hauled all the debris away, then built a brand new 320sf redwood deck with railing and privacy screen on one side, on the second story, on a hill. To be clear, we did not hire them for our job. This review is simply of their estimate/prices. I've looked at their work on their website, and from what I can tell they do excellent work. We had them come out to give us an estimate...now honestly Marin prices are outrageous to begin with... of the 10 quotes I got for our fence job, the 7 highest were from local companies, and the 3 best were from out of town. Go figure! Shows that people in our area simply are not willing to shop around...and trust me, there are plenty of good contractors that will come to Marin to do quality work. So I told them up front that I was concerned about the prices I'd received, and he offered to show me his "spreadsheet" so I could understand what his costs were. I said great! When I got the estimate, I was floored. He built in a line item for "profit." Ok, fine, every company deserves to make a profit. But then every other line item on the sheet was inflated. Labor costs that were outrageous, "company overhead" of $1,000, and even the materials cost was slightly higher than I'd priced on my own from a reputable lumber yard. Needless to say, I did not hire them. However, I did get a call 2 weeks later from their office. She was very nice, at least to start, and I tried to avoid a long discussion about the price, and told her simply that I felt the quote was unreasonable. But, she kept pressing me for more information, so eventually I calmly explained to her that while I have no problem with them charging whatever prices they are able to charge...I personally was not willing to get Marin gouged and I would not pay those prices, since other companies were willing to do it for more than 25% less. She didn't like that so much...but she asked, so I told her my honest thoughts. Finally, our sister in law told us that they had received a disturbingly high quote from Clough on their fence. I won't go into the details about it, but let's just say that it was over $12,000 for a fence that should in no way have cost more than $6,000. Bottom line, I'm sure Clough does great work. And if you're rich, you should hire them. If not, contact me for better options. There are plenty of folks in the east bay or further north that will come and do quality work for more reasonable prices. (Their price for a simple fence was over $55 per foot. Compare that with $39 per foot which we actually paid. And in other parts of the country it's standard to pay less than $30 per foot) read more

Finding good contractors in Marine turns out to be harder than it should be. Some fail to show up for appointments while others just won't follow-up afterwards... Fortunately, we came across Clough Construction, and I have to say that this was one of the better experiences we had with any contractor over the last few years. We have been working with Clough on a recent project that involved replacing a failing deck support post reaching up to a deck attached to the second level of the house which required a new concrete support footing, as well as building a new redwood deck towards the back of the house. Communication from Scott and Deanne was exemplary. Scott immediately put us at ease with his experience and understanding of what we wanted to accomplish, and his bid was very fair. Deanne was in constant contact regarding the scheduling and was checking in on a regular basis to make sure everything went according to plan. Getting the permits from the city, as well as all passing the inspections went very smoothly. It was obvious that these guys knew how to manage the process. The team, consisting mainly of Quinn and Lowell, worked really well together and were professional, punctual, and most of all master craftsmen that take pride in their work. In addition, they were extremely personable and fun to work with. They had a great attitude and held on to the motto of "let's do what it takes to make our clients happy". Afterward a neighbor told me that he "couldn't see what had been fixed" ... which basically said that it was perfect. I highly recommend Clough Construction for any fence building and repair. Gates too! I've hired them many times and have always been very happy with the results. They recently built an extension of a fence that made it so the existing fence extended to the wall of the house. The gate they designed as part of it is not only pretty but very functional. One latch to reach over and open it, but (such creative thinking!) another on the opposite side to latch the gate open. IfYou are carrying in groceries and kids and pets and whatever else you may have loaded up your car with,having a securely latched open gate is perfect! You can make multiple trips without having to open the gate each time. The work crew also fixed a different preexisting gate and fence, strengthening it structurally so if anyone slams the gate it won't loosen the boards and therefore make the fence fall apart. Adding support boards in several places made it even more secure. Now it closes nicely, you don't have to pull hard or slam it sit to get it to open/close. We are very happy with the work done and the Clough Construction family/company. Oh, and equally important, the people with whom you talk on the phone and Scott, the owner, are very kind and knowledgeable. It's a pleasure to work with them. This is an update, so I guess traditional white stars on red background aren't available. We hired Clough Construction again to build a new fence on the back of our property. Scott had a great idea - let more greenery in (to look at). So he had his workmen, Rafael and Salvador, build the support posts and beams, then use wire to create a beautiful fence that is "see through". Lots of greenery, which I find very calming, particularly during this extended shelter in place time. They also fixed the fence between my property and my neighbors' house. I said I wasn't ready to re-do the whole thing. No problem (or attempts to upgrade my request). The crew did a fabulous, very professional job. They also were respectful of Covid-19 protocol (masks, gloves, social distancing) and very friendly and considerate. Cleaned up their scraps of wood and took all their tools. Rechecked our irrigation system to be sure installation of back fence didn't disturb anything. I didn't even ask them to do that! What a fantastic company. Clough Construction just completed a 75' stepped good neighbor fence for me. I was worried about the overall project due to the fact the fence sits on uneven ground, has a retaining wall below part of it and an oak tree growing into the center of it. They had a solve for each issue and delivered an absolutely beautiful fence for way less than I expected to pay. Our deck extension was built several years ago. It is sound and nicely built, BUT the hardware used rusted. (I had to pay another contractor to replace the hardware on the handrail shortly after the deck was built and the screws or nails used now show rust spots which spoils the look of our stain.) I would be careful to specify the hardware used on handrails, and even on the deck itself. read more

We hired Clough to build a deer fence around our hillside garden. I was looking for something basic and functional -- I got a work of art. I am amazed by how beautiful and strong it is. The price was reasonable, and there were no added charges. For instance, it became apparent during construction that the design would work better if the ground rail was a 2 x 12, instead of the specified 2 x 6, but we were not charged extra. I am adding to my last review on 8/3/13 - it's been three years since our deck was completed by Clough and we had some issues with the tannens bleeding through some of the wood headers. It may have been caused by incorrect stain used by our painter, and nothing to do with Clough's work - however, Clough was very agreeable to coming back out to our home and replacing the headers free of charge. Wow! That's what I call standing by the quality of their work. We thought it may have been poor grade wood, affecting only two pieces, and Deanne at Clough was wonderful to work with again. I recommend these guys for your decking, fence or any construction project you have. They may not be the cheapest, but by far and above, their dedication to quality and their professionalism is second to none! read more

They listened carefully to our ideas and integrated them into the deck design. The planning process was extremely easy as Clough seems to be well-regarded by the San Rafael City planning department. The Clough crew was always friendly and professional. They even took care of my dog when I was at work. She loved them and sometimes still looks for them in the backyard. This is one of those times you thank God for yelp. I scheduled a fence and gate replacement with Dee Ann at Clough. The week before the install my roof started to leak during the December rain and I had to cancel on short notice while I dealt with water cascading through my living room. I rescheduled in March for the last week in April. I was splitting the cost with my neighbor. The Neighbor decided to move but agreed to go forward if Clough could do it in Mid-April. Clough could not and I postponed the job with three weeks notice until the new neighbor moves in. I called today about just fixing the gate; which is all on me. Dee Anne said, "I am sorry but I just do not feel good about this job. We'll pass" What! I was incredulous. Partly that she refused my order but mostly because her attitude resembled that of a 15 year old as opposed to her more probable age of 50.
