Bob and his team were great. They installed 6 recessed lights and 4 wooden wall panels, which they sanded and finished. Everything turned out great and they even spent extra time on the panels to get them just how we wanted even though it took them longer to do. We appreciated them going above and beyond with their time. I would definitely recommend them! read more

Bob does exceptional work. When we bought our home we used him to replace an aging wooden back deck with composite materials. It came out great, strong, sturdy and good looking. We recently had him back to install a new front deck. Again, sturdy, well designed and attractive. Highly recommend. read more

Waterproofing in shower has failed. After 6 years of light use the water damage started showing. No response from Nicholson Builders. Beware of Nicholson Builders quality of work. Showers installs should last more than 6 years. Pictures are from American Leak Detection. 2/16/2023 - found out it wasn't the waterproofing that failed. It was the design the of the pan. The shower floor tile sat above the wood curb that was wrapped with rubber waterproofing, which caused water spill over. The wood used to build the curb up was to small. Unfortunately it was an inexperience tile job by Nicholson's crew. read more

I had Bob Nicholson of Nicholson Construction aka Nicholson Builders do a remodel of my home here in Novato, CA. The recent remodel was to move the kitchen to a living room area, expand the kitchen to include an island, new appliances, electrical and plumbing and all new low E windows. ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS. We added a new laundry room and moved the garage pantry inside the kitchen area. Great design and great ideas from Bob to make this project a dream kitchen and remodel come true. Another job well done! Our first opportunity to engage Nicholson Builders was on the installation of our whole home generator. The project required a wide range of skills including masonry, plumbing, complex electrical, and drywall work and dealing with the city's Planning Department for approvals and inspections. All aspects of the project were done promptly and with great craftsmanship and quality. The areas the work occurred in were left spotless. (And we're admittedly picky about that). Based on that project we asked them to remodel our kitchen. Again, the Nicholson team's work was terrific. They ensured that everything was perfectly installed; no detail was too small. Bob found ways to source products that helped us save on the expenses. Based on their work we've asked them to do the remodeling work in our bathrooms. We have done small and very large, yearlong, remodeling projects on multiple homes. Nicholson Builders is the best general contractor we've found. One final note: My wife and I joke about the answer we get from most builders when we ask them when the project work will be completed. Until we started working with Nicholson Builders the answer has always been "We'll be done in two weeks", regardless of the project and their progress. Of course, they're never done in two weeks. Bob gave us an estimate for the project timeline and beat it by ensuring everything needed for the project was in place prior to starting their work and sticking with the work once they started. Great work and super easy to work with. We asked Bob (and Paul) to tackle creating a wooden gate in a tricky stucco archway that required the gate to open outward, with several other oddball constraints from our old house. Bob's Construction; I am more than pleased with the work Bob and his crew have done here! We had 3 bathrooms remodeled, 2 full and one 1/2. See photo's! One bathroom is my a spa! Heated floor, heated towel rack, 8 jet tub with heated bubbles and aroma therapy, separate rain head shower with a steam shower along with built in shelves and jet sprays! And look at my Chandelier! I added photos of my kitchen redo also! He doubled my space and put in a new window, gave me a pantry, a warming drawer and gas cook top and took out a wall which opened things up and was able to take space from a non used closet so I could put a convection oven and microwave! We live in a townhouse but you would never know it!. read more

This is actually my first five star review but that is really how happy I am with this company. Any homeowner who has ever had any construction done to their house, knows how much of a nightmare certain contractors can be. Nicholson Construction is a true example of how a contractor SHOULD run a business! We have worked with other contractors in the past that either did not disclosed info, used shoddy materials and shortcuts or would simply disappear to another job making the finish date weeks late. All we really wanted was a sense of trust in our contractor. It was such a relief to have Nicholson construction build our deck . The owner, Bob, really takes pride in his work and it shows. The finished product showed exceptional workmanship and attention to detail. He was upfront, flexible and honest. Bob and his crew did an amazing job for us. The initial work was to install a whole house generator, which required permitting, and all of the trades: landscaping, construction, plumbing, electrical and gas. They did all of the work in such a way that, other than now seeing a generator on a pad in our yard, you'd never know that they had to do some major interior and exterior work. The inspector, and even the generator service representative who generally does commercial installations, commented on the quality of their work. Based on what we saw, we're quite picky, we asked them to do some interior work. The degree that they did to cover and tent the work area, and cleanup afterwards was such, again, that you'd never know the work was done; it blended in perfectly. Bob's upfront and ongoing communications was terrific. We have had many large and small construction projects done in our homes, so we know what great workmanship and partnership looks like. My wife found Bob Nicholson online and read a review. Based upon that review we asked him for a quote. He quoted my 'hurry up' job based on a .jpg that I emailed him as well as some answers to pertinent questions. He showed up on time, was very careful not to damage the house during his work, took care of another job that I requested after he was here to do the first. He was fast and surgical in his work. Nicholson Builders has done multiple construction projects and remodels for me. They are my preferred contractor in Marin and they have always done great work. The reason why I have continued to work with them is because they plan ahead and think about the best way to perform the work and complete the project for the client. Most recently they built a retaining wall to reinforce and hold the load of my driveway. The original retaining wall lasted for 40 years and with the quality work Nicholson Builders performed on the new retaining wall I would expect the new wall to last twice that. Earlier today Bob Nicholson and Nicholson Construction completed a large and complicated deck project at my home in Mill Valley. In addition to the house being on a 45 degree grade with the deck approximately 45 feet above ground, to replace the existing deck all of the ceiling in the lower level of the house had to be removed. This meant that we needed to move out of the bedrooms and my office until the project was completed. From the time I was introduced to Bob, he quietly and accurately assessed every aspect of the job, set realistic expectations and worked closely with me to ensure he met or exceeded his goals. In every aspect of the job, from demolition, through construction and final clean-up Bob walked the extra mile to ensure we were not just satisfied but genuinely happy with the work from Nicholson Construction. All too often I have heard of construction jobs that have gone wrong or over budget, not this job, and the final project came out better than I could have hoped. Bob Nicholson is not only a skillful and gifted contractor, he is a great guy! He is honest, competent, practical and generous. I asked him to help me remodel my master bathroom but I had not a clue about how to go about it and was very nervous about cost. Bob made good suggestions, took care of everything in the promised time, was attentive to my questions and did a very nice job. Bob Nicholson and his crew are amazing to work with. They are extremely professional and bring a craft to the work they do. Bob is the best example of how to run a construction business. We had them remove a load bearing wall and install a beam in it's place, as well as replacing another sagging beam. The work they did was perfect and even worked hard to preserve as much of the plaster as possible, so that I would not have to try and match after the fact. At every phase of the project, Bob was thinking many steps ahead, which has become a rare thing in contractors lately. Our job was very small in cost compared to his current work, but he never made me feel like I was any less important. He even stepped away from his crew on the the other jobs to make sure my project got done. The crew left the site very clean each evening they left and was very careful not to let dust and debris get into the rest of the house, he even made sure that we did not bring our 8 month old baby in to the work area. If you need a contractor, do not use anyone other than Bob Nicholson. Trust me, you will regret not using him and wished you had him doing the work. read more

Bob completed a kitchen and family-room renovation at our house in Belvedere a year ago, including a counter-levered extension. He did a great job. High quality workmanship and good communications when necessary. But this is to note that he came back this week to fix something that was due to an unusual problem with some of the plywood that was used. While it was not Bob's fault, he responded to my asking him to come and look at the issue, we investigated it together and then he took on the responsibility to fix it in an exemplary way. In this day and age of finger pointing, it's unusual to work with someone that takes this approach. I highly recommend Bob and his team. read more

Bob Nicholson has worked on 1930's SF house off and on for the past 10 yrs. It hasn't always been easy as these older homes come with many challenges. He transformed our older home into an updated and very lovely place to live. More recently Bob took on his partner Paul and as a team I can tell you the two of them are a great complement to one another. I can't rave about Bob and his team enough. We did a major remodel recently and Bob was so helpful every step of the way. I was anxious about the process and we interviewed and met with 3 different contractors before deciding on Nicholson Construction. Ultimately, we went with Bob because he was the most thorough in his bidding process. Every item was detailed and accounted for. Unlike other renovations, we really felt like we knew what the end cost would be and his bid was right on the nose with what we paid. He sat down for over an hour to review it piece by piece before we signed the contract. That was really an important start to a big project like this for us.
