In my old age (36), I've developed a set of criteria for brunch places, one that probably knocks out most hype beasts. My root philosophy is that brunch is best used for catching up with friends. NYC, please give the frenetic energy the morning off and serve me a soothing balm for my fevered soul. Back to the brunch spot: it has to take reservations, and it can't hustle people out of their tables after 90 minutes. The vibes need to be calm, maybe even lethargic. The food should be serviceable but doesn't need to knock my socks off; eggs and toast are not going to change the world. A view or some vibes are an added bonus. From my perspective, Celestine nails all the things I consider essential in a brunch spot. First, there's that million-dollar view. There's not a bad seat in the house; you're guaranteed a panorama of either the Brooklyn or Manhattan Bridge, and possibly both. The menu and the space both feel comfortably small; not too many options, not too cramped. The food leans Mediterranean; the mezze appetizer plate my friends and I shared was excellent. You won't find instagrammable novelties like Thai Diner's French toast under the mains, but my pancakes were delicious. My friends fought over the burger and mortadella sandwich, and portions were hearty. A nice selection of cocktails and wines complemented the food. No line out the door, very solid food, nothing but tranquility and good vibes. I think Celestine is my ideal. read more

Tucked away from the New York craziness but still full of the New York noises (can hear the trains). We ordered our drinks and got them right away. I ordered the duck hash and the three of us shared the mezze platter. The duck hash was so flavorful but light and felt healthy. I wish it was spicier & asked for hot sauce and got a sauce that wasn't spicy at all but I ended up using the spicy dip from the platter! The staff was super accommodating and allowed me to change my reservation to a half hour later ( I'm assuming due to the availability at the time). This definitely off loaded our stress. Shout out to Freida! Our waiter Daniel was super chill and guided our table with our selections quite well. They have indoor and outdoor seating both with great views of the bridge. Camomile cooler: hands down best spirit-free drink. I d'Inès hère twice and came back just for this and another dish below. Stay tuned! Mezze Platter: definitely a great pick if you want to try all the dips. Come with a fantastic warm flatbread which our table orders more of. My favorite dip was the pistachio. Ceasar salad: solid. Can't go wrong Roasted beets: STAR dish. Well seasoned beets. The fruit and almonds complemented it all. Felt like a party in my mouth. Came back for this dish alone. Roasted chicken: juicy. Solid dish, but was not a standout for me. Lobster Tagliatelle: it was ok. It did not have that "fresh from the sea" flavor that you want with seafood and the broth it's cooked in. Pasta was Al dente, but without that flavor fell flat. I wouldn't order this on a return trip. The strengths of this restaurant are its small plates. Definitely a place for the ambience. The place is situated to overlook the water under the Brooklyn Bridge. I was in a wedding dinner so all the items were family style. The food wasn't wow for me. Everything was a bit lacking in salt or flavor. My favorite was the Muhamarra (roasted red pepper) that was much needed on the filet mignon. The brazino was a bit fishy and the accommodating Slaw needed more freshness to help the fish. The cabbage veg mix under the filet mignon was a poor choice. It was bitter and didn't work well with the protein. The lamb croquettes was okay and again, needed more flavor in sauce. The accompanied sauce was bland for the croquettes. I understand that you should try to be able to taste the true flavor of each item but it was too bland or things didn't go well together. Lastly, not sure why the servers was so adamant of clearing our tables so fast and just dumping the food. If we didn't end up asking for the leftover entrees, there would have been lots of wasted meat and fish. We should've realized and pack the apps too. Service wasn't great/attentive especially considering it was a special party and not a regular dining. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it. Far more better choices in the area. read more

I love eggplants and I was expecting more of a babaganoush dish but Celestine's version didn't deliver. Also please do yourself a favor and skip the fries! They weren't good at all. However, I truly enjoyed the entrees here. A big reason I'm giving this place a 4 and not anything lower is because I really think I had the best grilled mackerel with sauce I've ever had in my life here. It was a true delight! I also really enjoyed the squash curry! If you're in the area and wanted to go to a nice restaurant, I'd highly recommend Celestine. Came here on a Thursday night to celebrate a friends Birthday. The only thing I would ever come back is for the view... It's definitely a great view of the Manhattan Bridge but CAUTION: if you do sit by the window (which is probably the best views in the restaurant) you WILL see a few rats run by. It is NY so you see rats quite often but its still not the best thing to see while you're eating overpriced food. Honestly, the food wasn't bad. My friend and I ordered the Mezze Platter and Branzino with a side of Fried Brussels Sprouts to share. The reason why I gave this place a 3/5 was the egregiousness of charging for flatbread ($3 each for a small flatbread) that usually comes standard with Mezze at other establishments. Granted, this is NY and almost everything is overpriced and I haven't been to ALL restaurants that serve Mezze but in the good amount of places I have been, flatbread of some kind is complimentary??? So on top of the Mezze Platter being $27 we had to pay $3 for flatbread to eat with the Mezze and another $10 for the crudite. So Mezze + flatbread + Crudite = $40. Just no. read more

I was disappointed with my meal here. I was here for my birthday dinner with my two daughters, and the view of Lower Manhattan was as fantastic as the food was forgettable. The biggest disappointment was dessert, a tinny piece of Tahini Date cake that could not have been more than 2" across and 1/2" thick with a small dab of ice cream on top, all for $13. You come here for the views, not the service or food - at least not the brunch food. We brought visiting relatives here for brunch the Saturday before 4th of July and sat outside. The ambiance was wonderful. The patio overlooks (underlooks?) the Manhattan bridge and is surrounded by greenery and it's just heavenly. There is also a very nice breeze which was just perfect for the hot day we were there. The food is very mediocre but we expected that. The mezze platter was delicious but everything else was meh. I imagine the dinner food might be better as they seem to do a better job with the traditional Mediterranean cuisine. Service was also not great and our server had zero social skills. They have both indoor and outdoor seating on a back deck by the water. The mezze platter with flatbread was so tasty. Fresh, warm bread with various dips that were all unique and delicious in their own ways. The tomato and egg dish was perfectly cooked on a thick slice of what I believe was sourdough. My friend enjoyed her fried chicken sandwich and the fries were make with thick potato slices. The wine selection was also good I opted for an orange wine while my friend got the white. The mezze platter was a great starter to get everyone comfortable. I especially liked the whipped labneh. Order a few flatbreads for the dips - love that they're made in-house and they are fluffy and deliciously nutty. For a more delicate choice, the heirloom tomatoes was a surprisingly beautiful and delicious dish! Thinly sliced perfect summer tomatoes with creamy cheese over good toasted bread, plus a side of eggs and salad to complete the plate. Yum! The brisket burger was delicious as well, and definitely hits the spot with a mountain of fries. I am so happy that the desserts have changed, because the olive oil bread is amazing - please don't leave without ordering it! It's the perfect elegant way to end the meal. Simple but done really well. I wasn't mad about the doughnuts either though, so if you have room then order both! First full weekend of summer, we took a golden hour NYC Ferry in Bay Ridge and landed in DUMBO. A beautiful summer Sunday night stroll lead us to Celestine. Beautiful contemporary interior, large windows reaching from floor to ceiling, creating open industrial design. Outstanding views of NYC skyline and East River. Celestine has a big city view with a quaint location being tucked under the Manhattan bridge. We came for the unique Mediterranean menu and amazing reviews found on Yelp. Unfortunately, no seating was available in the dinning room and a private event had the restaurant bumping for a Sunday night. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some well mixed drinks from the very attentive mixologist. We also got to watch (smell) how the chef and kitchen crew prepared the unique and delicious fusion of middle eastern dishes with fresh Mediterranean flair. A very good friend of ours had made brunch reservations on a beautiful spring Saturday and we arrived 25 mins later than our reservation time and were nervous that we'd lose our table. At 12:25 pm on a Saturday, we were seated right away and the place was half full, with outdoor seating being almost full, where we wanted to sit. The view from our outdoor seating was beautiful. The only problem which made us move inside within 5 minutes, was too much wind and too less sunlight which was making it a bit chilly for us. On a perfect warm summer day, I'd highly recommend outdoor seating! We started with some brunch cocktails which included Gamma and Jupiter, priced at $15 each. Both cocktails were decent, not enough kick to them though. For Mezze, we got the Hummus and Baba Ghannouj ($9 ea) which came with pita bread. The Hummus was absolutely delicious. For mains, we got Steamed Egg ($16) and Chicken Thigh Kebab ($16). Both were very delicious, but i wish the portions were slightly bigger as far as meat was concerned. If you eat bread, the Chicken Thigh Kebab will stuff you but for all non-bread eaters, I'd recommend getting that plate with salad replacements. The thigh kebab although very delicious, barely had small pieces of chicken in it. We also ordered the French Toast Casserole ($12) for dessert and it was absolutely amazing. One for the table was the perfect amount of sweetness we needed for our sugar craving. Service was excellent and it was a very friendly staff who welcomed and served us that day. Noise levels were low making it a perfect spot to have conversations with your friends. Will definitely recommend this place for brunch or a romantic date night! read more
