Everything was on time and the first flight crew was great. The next flight out, the crew was equally great, the boarding process was fast, and the flight arrived early. Hard to beat that. They also were offering a $1500 travel credit if someone gave up their seat, but on the heels on a fun but mildly exhausting trip, I couldn't rally for it. Just wasn't in the cards this time but I appreciate them not crapping out a low ball offer like I've seen from Southwest where they roll a few points onto your account. $1500 is a real, "we mean business" kind of offer which is a good sign. In an era of consolidated airlines and travel delays, this was a welcome breath of fresh air. I probably need more info to really gauge it, but glad to try them out recently.

I flew one of their small CRJ jets. And while I'm diehard Delta, United's CRJs are a million times nicer and more updated than Deltas. No janky seats that are broken and leaning backward even when not reclined. Nice, new upholstery. Very clean. And a better designed flight attendant galley. They even have an open and free snack shop in first class, with cookies, candy, etc. I didn't check a bag because it was only a 30 hour trip and I packed a backpack. Another nice thing is that unlike Delta's/West Jet's CRJs, you can actually fit your personal item under the seat. Flight attendants were kind and helpful. Pilots kept us informed.

I understand stuff happens but come on.. everytime i fly in and out to Denver there's something. Since they changed their business model and became like the other main airlines...like no more free bags or open seating, their service has gone downhill. Almost every gate agent now asks for voluntary checked bags as they claim overhead bins are full. As I had a layover iMCO I was like ok I'll do it. I thought I was doing a good thing. I even asked the gate agent is there anything I need to do because I have a layover? No he says... it will meet you at BWI. The one time I dont put my apple tag is when they lose my luggage!! I arrive at BWI... it's 1 am. And everyone else got their bag except me.... They track my bag it's at MCO. My bag tag apparently fell off. The airport code tag fell off. Not cool. It took a day and a half to be reunited with my bag. However SW customer service agents over the phone were great. My bag was placed on the next flight out and they used like a courier company to deliver my bag to my house I did have the option to pick it u at the airport but it's too far. I 100% place blame on the baggage handlers at DEN. If you are voluntary doing a checked bag make sure you take pictures of your luggage, make sure the tags are secured and throw in an air tag. SW should limit the amount of carry-ons if they constantly need people to have their bag checked or lower their prices. SW did look out for me and issue a voucher for the inconvenience.

For decades, Southwest Airlines stood out as one of America's best-run airlines. Its success was…read morebuilt on a simple formula: low fares, friendly service, operational excellence, and a genuine focus on the customer. This strategy created remarkable loyalty and made Southwest one of the most admired and fun airlines in the industry. Today, the company appears to be moving in a very different direction. Following pressure from activist investors and changes in leadership with the CFO being promoted to the CEO, Southwest has embraced a more revenue-driven strategy focused on increasing shareholder returns. The introduction of checked-bag fees, paid seat selection, and other ancillary charges marks a significant departure from the business model that differentiated the airline for more than 50 years. Today, checking a bag can cost around $90 on some fares, and passengers often have to pay extra to secure a desirable seat. Without doing so, many will end up in a middle seat toward the back of the aircraft. I did on all my flights to SLC via Denver and Los Angeles. These initiatives may improve short-term cash flow and earnings, but they also risk weakening the customer loyalty that was once Southwest's greatest competitive advantage. In my case, i will avoid Southwest like the plague and i really fly a great deal. Over the past couple of years flights are systematically delayed, luggages are lost , agents at the gate have little authority to change things as the focus has shifted away from customers and operations. Profitability and shareholder value are essential goals for any public company. However, the strongest businesses create long-term shareholder value by first creating exceptional value for their customers. Time will tell whether Southwest's new strategy proves successful, but from a passenger's perspective, the airline has lost much of what once made it special.

Had gotten there extra early, even though the TSA website indicated short wait times at DIA. Boarding was easy. Sank into my seat and ordered tonic water to stave off leg cramps. The ONLY annoying aspect of this trip was the constant interruption of announcements, perhaps ten before takeoff. Flight attendant was masked. I read lips. I didn't note my lack of perfect hearing on my account, because I don't like people shouting at me. The mask made things slightly more difficult, but we communicated by her pointing at things and me speaking. It was fine. Lunch--cold salmon salad--was delicious. The wine was a generous pour, and I was able to sleep. Which was the desired outcome. I was exhausted. Entertainment selection, again, was okay. I didn't find any movies that I wanted to see, so watched SVU instead. The flight took off on time, and landed on time, too. All in all, a very enjoyable experience for a once-devoted Southwest flier. This beat "Choice Extra" hands down, and cost very little more for many more perks. It seems like a no-brainer.

In economy, within Alaska, two bags are free, which are a stellar deal; you're looking at about a minimum of 12 hours of flying. You better get comfortable. I arrived at Heathrow hours early as I shared a cab with a coworker and his flight was much earlier. I could not check in on the app or on the website in the day prior, so I stood in line for close to an hour at the American window where they told me I was actually flying BA (my travel record showed American) and I needed to go to another terminal. I got to that terminal and tried to get in line to check in but BA employee said I needed to use the kiosk. I explained I was unable to check in on apps or online and needed an agent. They insisted I try the kiosk first. Unsurprisingly.. it didn't work. I was allowed to get in the check in line with an agent where I stood for the next almost 2 hours. Yes, 2 hours standing on a concrete floor. My back was screaming (old people problems, I know). I finally got up to an agent who said I wasn't able to check in because I needed to show my visa. I pulled up my British electronic visa and she said "no love, your American visa".. while holding my American passport in her hand. I explained I don't need a visa because I am an American returning to my home country. She looked confused but decided she needed to call someone to help. I stood while she was on hold and transferred around to different places who eventually told her it was an issue in the system today and they would remove the error. She then told me I had no seat on the flight because it was oversold and they couldn't guarantee I would get on, so they may have to book my on the next flight which was the next day or would need to look at another airline for me. She gave me a boarding pass that was or standby and said to hurry to the gate to try and get a seat. I got in the security line and about 15 minutes later, I was up.. I scanned my boarding pass and it errored out, not letting me through. An employee told me I had to get in a different line to see what was wrong with my boarding pass. I stood in anther line for a good 40 minutes. Once I got help, they told me I couldn't get through because I don't have a seat and would have to fly standby. I explained, yes.. that's why I have a standby boarding pass. It says standby on it. She said it wasn't standby in the system and it needed to be fixed, so she had to call someone to assist. Another 15 minutes later and they couldn't get it to work and I was going to miss the flight, she said she would take me through a different security line so I could get to the gate. She did that and I had to take a train to get to the gate, which wasn't working for about 5 minutes because it was having a "security sweep" with officers and dogs going through it. I finally got on the train, got off at the right place, ran all the way to the gate as they were boarding. Asked if they had a seat for me, and they huffily said they did but I almost didn't because I waited so long to get to the gate. Are you kidding me? I got on the plane and will be happy to never fly British Airlines again. I guess all the great luck I've had traveling was made up for on this trip. Just terrible.
