Cavanaugh's is a rarity in today's world of souless corporate restaurants ... it is a local neighborhood pub and restaurant. The type of place you bring your kid after the big playoff game, music recital or on their birthday. It's the type of place you run into your friends and neighbors. A place where everyone is laughing and smiling and forgetting about the outside world for a while over good food and good conversation. If I were shooting a movie or sitcom about a hometown restaurant/pub, this is the location I'd pick. The atmosphere here is great ... it's broken in and comfortable but it feels clean and maintained. On the walls are sports jersies from the local teams and local photos and newspaper clippings. The front room has a long bar and some tables and the rear room is a bigger dining room with several tables. I believe they serve dinner or lunch making the bar the perfect place to come after a round of golf in the afternoon or to watch the playoff game at night. The dining room would be a great place for a family to eat ... while it has that great warm 'buzz' at dinner, it is not too loud to enjoy your meal and conversation at the table. The food here is great and the portions big. Everything is good quality and you can tell by tasting the food that no corners have been cut in its prep. It is pub type food but they make a damn good steak and have a little something for everyone on the extensive menu. My favorite would be the 'Irish Nachos', which are seasoned waffle fries loaded with cheese and served with sour cream and salsa on the side. Next up will be the Shepherd's Pie. A friend of mine had the T-Bone steak and it looked as thick as some of the NYC steakhouses I've been to! I've also been told that the French Onion soup is 'the best ever' by more than one person who has had it. The family that owns the restaurant are well known in town and the owner, Chris always makes the time to stop by and see how everyone's meal was. The waitstaff seem to have been working here for quite some time, which is a rare thing in the restaurant business these days and their knowledge of the menu and happiness to be working there are apparent in the way they interact with customers. Our waitress was great ... always smiling but making an occasional fun joke and cracking everyone up. If you are looking for great food in a fun environment, look no further than Cavanaugh's. This seems like an easy place to become a regular at. While lots of new restaurants pop up and then pop out in small towns and lots of corporate chains are opening all over Long Island, Cavanagh's has been in business for a long time for a reason. This is a local favorite. It's always crowded, especially the bar. Lots of regulars who come for the beer and to meet neighborhood friends. I'm giving it 3 stars for the food. It's fine for ordering hamburgers, fries, and old Irish favorites like beef stew. Other than that the food is just mediocre. On a recent visit, and we've been here 6 or 7 times in the last 10 years, we were disappointed in the meal. The chili was a thick clump of fried chopped beef with a very small amount of beans and almost no liquid. My corned-beef reuben wasn't much better with a fatty cut of meat and bread that was too-greasy. Potato salad was good but the cole slaw was swimming in mayonnaise. My husband had the chili also, which he could not eat. His fish and chips were fine, with a generous portion of fish. So, in summary, it's a neighborhood bar with friendly locals who love the place, and just mediocre food. If you like beer, hamburgers and fries, then give it an extra star! As far as I'm concerned, I'll wait another year or two before I give it another try! read more

Seemed promising at first, the French onion soup was absolutely delicious. The rest of what we ordered not so much. Everything was overdone, absolutely everything. It was as if they kept yesterdays cooked fries, onion rings, fish etc and and refried it...terrible. Burger was over cooked. And I hate being nickel and dimed. Nowhere on the menu does it say you will pay a credit card fee, yet there it is in the bill and $1 each for a little extra tarter sauce and sour cream. I know there are places that charge for extra sauce, but .25 would be accurate for portion. Needless to say, I won't return. read more

We went last night for date night. The servers were super attentive and my bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions was simply divine. Their sweet potato fries are some of the best I've ever had. It's an Irish poob, laddo! Burgers are decent- simply seasoned and cooked to order. usualt pub grub on the menu: wings, pastrami and reubens, fried whatever. The space is a bit tight and reminds me of what would happen if **I** opened a bar. Eventually, every bit of memorabilia and kitsch would come to festoon every spare nook and cranny. But that's what i find cool. Definitely a Locals' Vibe but not a hostile one. Stop in for a burger and a beer, you can't go wrong. Rustic, festive Irish pub in Blue Point has a locals only vibe. I really liked the dining room in the back with its dark wood interior. They have one of my favorite beers on tap which is a bonus. Ordered the shepherd's pie which was delicious. However the stuffed flounder was iffy. The stuffing was good and I like the sweet potato fries but the flounder itself was fishy and off tasting. Let's just say if it was me who ordered that, I would've sent it right back. Service was very welcoming and friendly and prices are quite reasonable even for beers. I do recommend it but I would steer clear of the fish. read more

Let me take the time to thank one business (who will not be named, but also in blue point) that has been closed the three times I tried to visit it. I didn't want to go on with hunger so I found Cavanaugh's on Yelp. It has a small parking lot on the side but we got there early enough to get great parking. When I walked in I felt this is my kind of place. It was a hole in the wall with modern amenities, such as a electric juke box, 14 TV's and Lotto. The place is packed with pictures showing its 30 year history. There are Tiffany lamps and ceiling fans to add to the character of this place. I also fell in love with the conversations of the patrons, talking about Football and life. They seemed to be very knowledgeable people telling entertaining stories. They also had clean tables as well as a great bathroom, that had a urinal in it (Sometimes it's the little things that make men happy). Now onto the review of the food. I honestly wish Yelp offered 6 stars, I would not use it unless everything was perfect. Good food, service, and atmosphere. The keys to a establishments success. We started with potato salad and it delivered! It had chopped veggies as well as big potatoes in it. The second were the potato skins. They just don't get it wrong. They put a lot of bacon on top with cheddar and don't charge for more sour cream like other places. My main meal was a cheeseburger with waffle fries. The burger was 8 oz. of pure beef and they cooked it the way I asked without issue. The waffle fries are what other restaurants should model their's after. They came out hot with the perfect seasoning on them. Also my brother, reluctantly, let me try his sweet potato fries. Bravo! They were the best I've had since I started Yelping. The maple syrup dipping sauce was excellent too. Will I be back, yes! Should you go, absolutely. I don't know about you but the next time I come I'm getting those wings. read more

It was getting late on a Sunday night and football was over, we were hungry and had not thought ahead. We took a ride and stopped into Cavanaugh's, thrilled to find out that the kitchen was open till 11pm. I had been in the bar many times and had appetizers and snacks at the bar but it had been a while. I had not had a sit down dinner so this would be a first. To say that we were pleasantly surprised would be a massive understatement!! We started off with some wings, these were not the little ones you usually get but big nice meaty wings. I don't like HOT HOT so the standard house wing dressing was great. My wife ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with Sweat Potato Fries and I got a Cheesesteak with regular Fries. Everything was cooked to perfection, the fries were crisp and had that crunch you look for the burger was perfectly cooked and the bacon was crisp and cruchy. The Cheesesteak was awesome not a bunch of slim jims on a roll but a nice cut of steak with cheese, onions and peppers. To wash it down we had a few Stella's and even tried an desert. I found the entire experience to be great, the food was wonderful the waiter was attentive and friendly, the bartender even came over to apologize for the noise at the bar (we never noticed), to find such a great meal at the last minute late on a Sunday night was wonderful. Ok... there might be better steaks out there, or better burgers, or so on... but THIS is the place to be if you just need to kick back, tuck in to some good, solid grub, and be served with a smile. It's a neighborhood place, that feels "family run" and welcoming. The kind of place that makes you want to go back to... I'm not saying the food's not good - it IS. Steak Night on Wednesday - get there. Great atmosphere, great service. Went with a group of people and sat in the back dining room. Got all our food quick and our beer cold. Cheese sticks were great, as well as the kickin' Irish nachos. Pretty crowded for a Wednesday-- we parked at the bank across the street and walked over, which was a good choice since they have a tiny parking lot. Watched some baseball, had a good time, and didn't have to pay a whole heck of a lot for it. read more

Great spot! Was in the area, and stopped in for a quick bite, and was really surprised on how much I liked Cav's.. The decor is TV monitors, sports and beer memorabilia, or what I hope heaven looks like, but with great deer hunting out the back door! But let's get back to Cav's review.. The food was on point. We went with a grilled corned beef Reuben and potato salad, and a Philly Cheese Steak with sweet potato fries. The meats were piled high and thick. The corned beef was excellent, lean and tasty. The steak was so tender, and real steak too, no steak-um type meat here. The potato salad was tasted good but was a little too creamy for my liking. The sweet potato fires were perfect. This is a great place, great food and atmosphere! I love the Irish Nachos( what you would expect of a nacho platter, with waffle fries opposed to chips). Tap selection is limited, but that would never deter me from this place. It really its a great establishment!!!! I took my family here after my 12 year old son's baseball game on a Saturday night. It was perfect. We waited only 5 minutes for a seat in the back dining area. The Bud drafts were ice cold and only $2.50. I ordered a Chicken Burger that was tasty. My children loved their food and the ambience was quiet and quite pleasant. The waiter switched the big screen TV to the Yankees game very quickly. Overall, If I am in that area again after a game, I will go back. read more

My wife and I went there for the first time last night and we could not have been more pleased. I had the fish and chips, my wife had the chicken francaise and french onion soup and we shared an order of stuffed mushrooms and I couldn't find fault with any of it. Even the fries were perfect and the Guinness was served properly. It was a little noisy, not necessarily the place to go for a quiet romantic dinner, but for a fun night out it was great. My wife and I had gone to dinner there several times. The steaks are really good and the atmosphere is noisy but bearable. Last night we had dinner and when we got the bill they added $.50 for rocks for our after dinner drinks. The waiter said that we got a double shot in our drinks and added the $.50 for rocks. I said that was no double shot, it was filled with ice and very little liqueur. He said that he was sorry and removed the cost from the bill. While we like the restaurant very much and the amount charged was very little, it was not right, and an obvious lie, you have to watch your bills at this place. read more

Came here for a quick bite to eat and a order of wings to go (for a party). From the outside, it didn't look like anything too special, but once we walked in, I was pleasantly surprised. Great sports bar / pub feel, tons of tv, horse racing, quick draw etc. The place was pretty packed, and now I know why. Even so, we were seated in less then 5 minutes and a waitress was ready to take our order. Of course I was going to go with my normal chicken finger platter (because I have the palate of a five year old) but then the stuffed chicken burger caught my eye. So glad I stepped out of my comfort zone on this one because it was DELICIOUS. My boyfriend got the ribeye steak and all though I didn't try it, he seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. Cooked to perfection too. Food came out hot and fresh. The pumpkin beers were cold and crisp. I took note of all their weekly specials and those seem to be pretty awesome! Highly recommend this place, and we for sure will be back. This is the perfect example of "don't judge a book by its cover" ... because this is the perfect little hidden gem. Great pub! Very "feel good" vibe when I went to Cavanaugh's; I immediately felt at home. The moon burger was great, it had mozzerella and mushrooms (my favorite)! The best part about this bar is the monthly beer specials. This month is Land Shark, which is wonderful news, but I can't wait until June for shock top pints at $2.50!!! I love coming here for lunch! The menu is extensive and delicious . The best burgers I have ever had and a wonderful specials menu that changes often. I would come here with my family often for lunch and usually on triple crown race days. You can bet and watch the races or the game on their many TV's , and there is always something for the kids to eat and enjoy. A Saturday on race day ( or game day) is well spent.
