I would eat Cava every other day of it didn't break the bank- it's my #1 quick lunch option on Bethesda! I'm not a frou-frou kale-y eater- if I didn't have time to pack a lunch you can bet I'm going all out with my bowl and drowning it in harissa and tzatziki - the flavor awaits, and if you didn't love it, you have thousands of other combinations to create next time (roasted veggies and black lentils are such a wonderful addition to their options!!!). It gets crowded and confusing at lunch, but considering you'll love it enough to go more than once - order online. I fell in love with this place my first time here last summer. With such a positive experience from the food to the helpful staff, I decided to come back again since I was in town. This visit, I got a white rice bowl with tzatziki, red pepper hummus, crazy feta, chicken, pita chips, tomato + onion, lettuce, and lemon herb tahini. The flavors just didn't work out for me this time. The chicken was also pretty dry. I felt disappointed after my first bite and dreaded each bite afterwards. I can't believe this gets such high reviews. It's efficient and reasonable, but the food products are poor quality (soft, unsalted, weird textured feta; lame hummus; tasteless tomatoes) and the chicken was tender but very bland. I also asked for a "tiny bit" of harissa, which is spicy, and the slopped on about 3 tablespoons. The portion size of the pita was also small - I wasn't full after eating. Conclusion: Not bad if you want to get something interesting and fresh veggies, but almost every shwarma place I've ever been to is way better than this, even the lame ones. read more

I think everyone agrees there are similarities between Cava Mezze Grill and Chipotle. What I do like about the Chipotle model is the "do one (or a few things) and do them well" attitude. Unfortunately, my experience at CMG did not exemplify that. The big problem was the meat was burned. I got a pita. And almost every bite was bitter, leaving my mouth with the taste of burnt chicken. I could vaguely taste all those exciting Mediterranean spices behind the char which was very much in my face. The chicken was also dry, probably from being overcooked. The owner/partner of Cava was at the restaurant. I overheard him talking to some customers about how him and his business partner opened Cava in Rockville, then this, and are planning some expansions. It's ironic he was standing 1 foot away from me spouting the success of his business while I forced burnt chicken down my throat (I was hungry). I'm assuming it was a fluke. Probably one of the best or perhaps the best falafel I've ever had! This place seems to use the same model that Chipotle uses in putting together your order. First, you choose your carb, then your meat/filling and end with toppings/veggies. Very simple and efficient, especially during lunch rush. Recently tried the lamb in my pita, which was different than most Mediterranean places. Instead of thin slices, the lamb is served in mini-patties. It is also spicy, which I'm not a big fan of, so I'll probably stay away from the lamb next time. Overall, a great place for a meal! read more

Well that was delicious! First time in. It's right behind my booth at the Bethesda Art Fair. I got a grains and greens bowl with black lentil, brown rice, organic arugula and falafel. I added harissa, eggplant sauce, and red pepper hummus and topped with cabbage, banana peppers, and tomato cucumber mix and green harissa sauce on top. So nice and spicy on a cold day! The staff greeted me warmly, gave suggestions, and offered tastes. I deeply appreciate the availability of recycling and compost. The bowl, napkins, and all utensils are compostable. They even had cool music, most of which was along the lines of downtempo instrumental. Great drink selection too. I highly recommend this place. read more

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so I guess Chipotle should feel pretty darn flattered by Cava Mezze Grill. Almost everything is exactly the same as the revered burrito bar, from the spartan chic interior, and quick, efficient assembly line style ordering process. Except it's Greek food. Pitas replace tortillas, rice instead of beans, and wider selection of fillings including falafel, which is what I ordered for my inaugural visit this weekend. There was a small puddle on the floor where you begin your order, which I chalked up to the sweat of anticipation among the customers. They seem to have taken the Chipotle model and squeezed out any inefficiencies at all, including any unnecessary banter from their servers or even a "Thank you" when you have paid and completed your order. The interior is metallic and neo-brutalist, but luckily there is a small amount of outdoor seating where you can be entertained by the G'town cupcake sh*t show next door. The food itself was pretty good, and the falafel was interesting and above-average compared to most other recent examples I've tried. The actual way the the bowl is assembled is slightly odd, with the sauces buried underneath the toppings. The portions are noticeably smaller than what you would get at Chipotle, but luckily the prices reflect that, and I felt it was a good value for the meal overall. The main thing I was slightly disappointed with is how shamelessly they have ripped off the Chipotle concept without actually improving it by any significant measure, other than offering a different style of cuisine. I'm also not sold on this food being particularly "healthy." They are environmentally conscious, and one can compost everything which is great. Dear Cava, My food allergies thank you. ____ I'm allergic to tons of stuff AND vegetarian. Don't ask. So It's hard to eat out. Cava has changed all that for me. They have so many options that you're bound to find something you like. When I first walked in, I was a bit overwhelmed with the options and process. But once you do it, there ain't nothin to it! Here's what you do when you get there: 1) RICE or PITA ("for here" or "to go") 2) ADD DIPS They have about 6 - my favorites are the hummus and tzaziki sauce 3) ADD MEATS OR FELAFEL I just skip this section due to my allergies but I heard that the spicy lamb and chicken are good. 4) ADD TOPPINGS I always ask for "double cabbage". THE CABBAGE HERE IS THE BEST! And I don't even like cabbage. But ever since I had theirs, I can't stop thinking about it. Sometime, I'm going to pretend that I'm taking it to a party and get a bowlful to go! 5) GET A DRINK As much as I love their cabbage, they also sell a soda called spindrift sparkling mango orange....nuff said. The Tysons Corner location has nice outdoor seating but the one in Bethesda has a spot for you to sit by the window and people watch. read more

A favorite easy breezy lunch stop in DC. my only suggestion would be to have a seafood option for those that do not eat meat and are not fans of the falafel. Looooooove this place. Yes, it's Chipotle-style dining. Yes, the seating can be awkward to non-existent depending on the time and day. Yes, the food is AWESOME!! I tend to choose the salad as a base. The pita is pretty friggin' awesome but c'mon, they now have several different options as a salad base...my favorite being a mix of the super greens, spinach, & arugula. I am in LURVE with their meatballs and rarely...ummm...NEVER deviate from them. I'll order falafels on the side...because they're also pretty good...different from normal falafels in that everything is ground up. These bad boys leave some of the garbanzos whole leaving some texture to them. Ground up or textured...as long as they're good, I'll eat them. I always choose the harissa, Crazy Feta, & tzaziki as my three sauces (you get to choose up to 3). I get allllll the toppings...including the finishing items next to it. I skip the dressing because there's already so much flavor going on. Then I eat...with minimal talking. They've updated the drink selections too. In addition to the standard fountain drinks (two thumbs up for Coke products), they have some in-house drinks that are pretty good. We liked the Watermelon Mint drink on one occasion but I didn't care for it last time. The Raspberry Ginger Lemonade had a good amount of pucker to it but was my favorite. The Pineapple Coriander juice needed some more sugar in it (and I do not prefer sugary drinks). Tip, order the trio of dips & chips for around $8...you'll get more Crazy Feta than the $10 tub they sell at Whole Foods...plus their yummy pita chips. It's almost a must-get when I'm there for lunch. My kids love this place as well and scarf down a meatball pita in no time. The toddler is our picky kid but super happy with the pitas. The Husband loves this place too. Thumbs up for changing tables in BOTH bathrooms...so Daddy can be on diaper duty (oh the pun I could've done with that...but this is a food review...don't be gross) when we're out. The menu is decent (not a ton of variety), but the food is fresh, and you will most likely find something to suit your palate. The new trend of chipotle style, assembly line ordering is all the craze right now! &pizza does it too and I can see why this method is so appealing for businesses and customers alike. Long line? No worries! If you ever been in a long chipotle line that's out the door, you know that the line goes rather fast. Another good thing is that you can make your own food, so no complaining! When you first get to the ordering line you have to at least prepare yourself for a bowl, salad, large or two mini pitas. I think there are other base options but these are the only ones I remember off the top of my head. Then you add in the dips/spreads such as (pick 3) hummus, eggplant, roasted hummus,tzatziki, etc. Then you add your protein (pick one): chicken, meatballs, braised beef, lamb, falafel. Following that are a bunch of different toppings that are unlimited. Finally you top off with dressing. I'm not actually a big fan of chipotle but love Mediterranean style food so Cava hits the spot! You order at the counter in the back so you can see all your options, which is kinda nice. (1) Choose a "base" of salad (too many types to list!), bowl with basmati rice, large single pita, or two mini pitas. (2) Then choose your protein ranging from chicken, spicy lamb, grilled meatballs, beef, falafal and others, you can even get 1/2 portion of two different proteins. (3) Choose up to 3 dips and spreads: tzatziki, crazy feta (YUM!), red pepper and regular hummus, spicy harissa, eggplant dip. (4) Choose as many toppings as you'd like: lots of different veggie combos with tomatoes, cucumbers and onions, greek vinaigrette, kalamata olives, tahini, rice, greek yogurt w/dill, and more. Since I am a longtime customer of the original CAVA restaurant in rockville, i expected more from the new CAVA grill. Tried it first time on a friday afternoon, the staff were nice enough, but the food really underwhelmed. The design of the place takes obvious cues from the Chipotle experience, right down to the menu. I found the meat options (i tried the lamb) dry looking, and tasting like very cheap and oily meat. My girlfriend tried the falafel sandwich, the falafel were made out of potatoes, were oily and had a few whole chick peas inside. Far from what a falafel should taste like, and i've tried them in the middle east, new york and Israel. The pita filling options were not huge, a few spreads, a few salad type fillings. But for $8 dollars a pita you can easily try it and judge for yourself. read more

Very happy with this place. Came here for a quick lunch on recommendation from coworkers. While the interior and food ordering process is almost a clone of Chipotle, this place is much better. Scorecard time: +1: You may or may not like that it's a clone of Chipotle. However, I have to say that coming here for the first time it took a total of 6 seconds to figure out how exactly the system works because it's so familiar. I can see how that helps the customer base. +1: I got the falafel balls. I've had better falafel and I'm willing to give it another try because everything else was so good. The tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce were all very fresh. The basmati rice (I got a bowl with a pita on the side) was fragrant. The pita itself was warm and soft. I especially loved the spreads -- the spicy harissa and the creamy tzatziki. +1: I feel more inclined to eat healthier here than at Chipotle. After a full bowl plus pita, I was full but not heavy and laden after you are eating a loaded Chipotle burrito. +1: Certainly you can get better Greek food around the DMV, but for the price, portion, and convenience you cannot beat this. BONUS: They use sustainable disposables and compost and recycle everything. They provide the bins AND instructions on how to dispose of your trash properly. This is so good. I know it has been said, but this place really is a Greek Chipotle. The interior even has a similar layout and decor. Anyway, the food was great. I went for the bowl because, let's face it, you can fit more food in a bowl than a pita. That was decision one. Next decision: dipping sauce. I went with the harissa. VERY spicy, just as I had hoped for. Next: meat (or falafel). I went with the lamb which proved to be yet another great decision by me. Finally: toppings. I won't bore you with the intricate details of my bowl, but I would advocate more toppings. They add rather sparingly so the only option is to get everything to create a full, heaping bowl. They also serve Honest Iced Tea products, which I like. The seating is pretty sparse. Just a few long tables with an L-shaped counter around 2 sides. There is also outdoor seating if you can manage to score a chair on a nice day. Just be careful: within just a few blocks are several ice cream, frozen yogurt, shave ice, and gelato options. It is pretty tough to resist to put out the spice from the harissa sauce. read more

Keep in mind that this is not a good representation of Cava restaurants - the restaurants are quite different, focusing on mezze. The concept is a similar style to Chipotle, where you walk down the line and built your pita or bowl. I'd been dying to try out this new, fast-food, casual version of Cava for quite a while now (since I heard the buzz about it opening). Finally came on a gorgeous day. The inside decor is very different from the Rockville restaurant. The long rows of wooden tables and padded stools underneath hanging lights that looked like outdoor heating lamps gave a very modern and utilitarian vibe. But much like Chipotle/Potbelly, you order in an assembly style line, choosing your style (bowl, pita, salad, etc.), sauce (harissa, hummus, tzaziki, etc.) then main filling (meat/falafel), toppings (cucumbers, lettuce, etc.), and finally drinks (which included nice bottled flavored sodas, wine, and a selection of beer). Two gripes I had: 1) There are no prices ANYwhere. 2) If you get anything that comes in a bowl, they give you an ice cream scoop of your sauce on the side. Usually that's not a problem, but the sauces they provide are very thick and hard to spread evenly. I can't think of a better way to dole out the sauce, but I'd definitely appreciate it if they figured out a better method. Portion sizes were SO large and filling. The ingredients were all super fresh. The flavors were all unique yet cohesive. The workers were helpful and nice. Please note that this IS like a Chipotle/Potbelly in that you do have to clean up after yourself. After a few minutes of trying to figure out if a worker comes to clean up after us, we found (by the front doors no less) a long row of trash cans well-marked as to what belongs in which bin. Chipotle style Greek food. California needs this ASAP!! People who complain about Chipotle will probably have the same complaints here. "It's not authentic.". But the modern take with local ingredients makes it even better than the traditional version in my opinion. For example, you know how in gyros the tomatoes and cucumbers can be sliced so thick and end up overpowering? Well here they dice them and marinate then to make something like a salsa but then you are able to get a little in each bite. In addition, you can put sauce on twice!! Once on the pita in the beginning and then later as a topping. They have sauces such as harissa, sriracha Greek yogurt, crazy feta, tzatziki, yogurt dill, lemon herb tahini, roasted red pepper hummus, etc. It gets even better with the meat options. You would think they'd only have kebabs and gyro meat but it goes beyond that to beef meatballs and lamb sliders. Usually I don't like falafels that arent straight from the oven/fryer but these were so flavorful that I didn't mind. I added some lentil soup which was more on the tangy side. Be warned that the lines get incredibly long at lunch, but the authentic falafel and variety of dressings make the wait worth it! The Cava boys did it again and I am a huge fan again! Like most said, it is like a Greek Chipotle. I ordered the lamb with pita, harissa, tzatziki, feta, eggplant, and everything but lettuce for the remaining of toppings. I thought it was delicious. The bowl looks huge, if you are a big eater I suggest get the bowl and add a pita on the side. I tried the pork sausage and it was equally as good, if not tastier than the lamb. All ingredients are fresh, and contrary to my friend Phi's comment about the lamb being dry, my lamb was so juicy that as I was eating the juices were dripping down my hand. The place is really nice, its small but fits enough people. You pretty much sit next to strangers but it gives it personality. Everything looks very nice and modern as well. First: What I got: Pita with Eggplant & Pepper spread, Crazy Feta, Hummus, Loukaniko, Cabbage Salad, Tomato & Onion Salad, Tomato & Cucumber Salad, and Feta. Yes, more feta. Don't judge me. Best of all? As packed as I had mine, it didn't break. Crucial test. The meat I chose was their Loukaniko, which is a pork sausage. Very juicy and flavorful. All the spreads and toppings were perfect- very fresh and flavorful. I love the use of lemon in their salads, as it helps brighten and lighten up the pita. I feel the Cabbage Salad (let's be honest, this is a slaw. Please rename for my personal convenience. Thank you.) is essential, as it adds that great crispy bite to the sandwich/wrap. Gotta love a texture change-up. The "Crazy Feta" surprised me, as it's more a spread than a sprinkle-on topping, and does have a bit of a kick to it from the jalapeños mixed in. Very friendly staff, which was awesome. I had read in an article that there was a limit on how many items you could put on the pita- I asked how many I was allowed and was told as many as I wished. I wished a lot, as you can see! My bill for the stuffed-to-the-brim pita and a fancy-pants Boylan Soda was $9 and change, so good deal (and comparable to Chipotle.) Side note on the soda: I got their ginger ale... I am a ginger enthusiast... and this was a let down, especially with tons of other ginger ales/beers out there that pack a punch. I simply can't think of a better quality fast casual concept in the metro DC area. The quality of each ingredient is high, and the meats are exceptional - just terrific. Well seasoned and not kept on the line too long before they are replaced. There is an upcharge for lamb but the quality is terrific - you get the flavor and quality of lamb at full service restaurants, but at a much lower price. Yes the prices are higher than other fast casual restaurants, but not egregiously so and I always leave thinking about how good the food was and not the expense. Finally - kudos for their recycling section. Others (Boloco, for example) try to do a similar job but these guys nailed it. I'm not sure why I appreciate this so much on each visit but I do. I went here for the first time this weekend, and me and my family really liked it. The food tastes really good, that's the most important thing, right? In addition to being nutritious, which it can be if you choose the right food, as I did. Also, this place is pretty inexpensive for Bethesda, which is nice. WOWOWOWOWOWOW. I ate here 2x last week and that is unheard of in my life. Easily one of the best meals under $10 that I've ever had. First off you can go crazy with all of your selections and regardless of what you get, it will be PERFECT. Why? Who cares! It's delicious! My go-to has been the greens n' grains, chicken, harissa (don't let the peppers fool you, it's not THAT spicy), eggplant hummus, ALL of the veggie toppings, and the herb tahini dressing. Top it off with one of their juices (pineapple apple mint is my favorite) and you've got a hearty meal that will send you into flavor paradise. Every bite is just......... *heaven* It's hard not to be impressed with locally sourced, cheap, MTO fresh and flavorful food. I'd go back in a heartbeat today, tomorrow, and everyday. read more

Imagine a Mediterranean/Greek style Chipotle and you've entered Cava Mezze Grill..a contemporary and pseudo-fast food style joint where you can get flavorful food as well as prompt service. It's styled like Chipotle where you can get a pita, bowl, mini or salad - then you pick the type of meat (the chicken that I had was flavorful) - then you pick up to 3 sauces (I'd be careful not to add too many because then you'll just have a very yogurt-like and thick tasting rice bowl) - then top it off with as many toppings as you want ranging from lettuce, quinoa, salsa, etc. I like the concept for a quick meal yet still ethnic taste. You pick your base, protein, toppings, and dips. I chose a chicken salad, with three different kinda of hummus, and just about all of the toppings -which include the typical Mediterranean fare: tomato cucumber salad, olives, pickled onion, etc., I really enjoyed the fact that you can add as many toppings as you would like, with no additional charge. I also ordered a watermelon mint juice, which was absolutely delicious and incredibly refresing on a hot day! My salad was also very good and all of the ingredients were fresh and flavorful.
