This store and the personnel are one of the reasons I am glad I moved back to Chico after being away for most of my adult life. You can find almost anything you are looking for in regard to quilting, sewing or even vacuuming. The staff makes you know you are welcome and are very helpful and knowledgeable when asked for information about a product. I only intended to do quilting here and ended up buying a vacuum as well that I really love as it does the job (no cord needed (except when charging.) I had a Dyson that I could never dismantle to empty without help and the vacuum I bought makes emptying it a breeze. I also bought a Solaris and the staff gave me a great trade-in and let me complete the sale in November rather than the few days earlier. Why? I've been coming here for years and Dan / Cathy have always gone above and beyond to help me with whatever I need , dan always goes through his warehouse to find whatever I need if the showroom doesn't have a said product. Love this place! I live in Southern California but every time I come to Chico I stop by. They staff is incredibly knowledgeable on the machines and helped my father and I get a new sewing machine for my mom. Then there is Honey Run quilters.... absolutely AMAZING FABRICS! Forget going to the large chains for fabric.... the price is similar and the fabric is nowhere near the quality at Honey Run. The staff, again, is incredibly helpful. I don't usually complain publicly, but this is a must. In my life time I have never been treated so badly like I have at Kathy's Sew and Vac. They may have had a good reputation till that day. I brought my problem vacuum in which had one days left on it's warranty. As I approach them I immediately felt suspicion and bad energy coming form the people behind the front desk. I explained what was wrong with my vacuum, with a stiff upper lip, they already decided I felt they were not going to do anything to resolve the problem. This was not the worst. There were two people with me during our conversion when one said to the other you are wanted over there, he leaves, as I watched him leave with out saying a word like excuse me I'll be right back, I turned around to the second person who also left. There I was standing alone. As I was walking out the store alone, my vacuum problem not resolved I couldn't believe how rude, how disrespectful, how uncaring these two were to me. There was an issue with my moms machine that couldn't be fixed. There was a lack of communication as to the reason. They worked to correct that pppr communication by giving her a machine similar to hers that is dated in the 60's. read more

I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door and felt welcome. I was looking for someone to help me with my very old serger. Unfortunately, the person that could help me is only available in a couple days a week. I got the information to come back when they are there. Half the store is dedicated to sewing and the other half is dedicated to vacuums. There are many quilting fabrics to choose from, but you won't find many fashion fabrics. I have yet to find a store that carries more than a few, besides some of the chain stores. They do carry sewing notions and machines, so if you're in the market for those items I would check this place out before heading off to a larger store. Keep it local if you can. read more

Someone carried it out for us, and our greeter wished us good bye. This was only my second time here. The first time, when I dropped off the machine, I received similar service. I brought an upright vacuum cleaner in for repair after a few people beat the tar out of it. My cleaning lady pretty much dragged my vacuum own the steps (bam-bam-bam) to clean the carpet there, and I can only guess that the moving guy wasn't a Eureka man from the way he threw it about. The plastic housing around the base was cracked, and the latch on the cover for the bag had snapped off. When I went to Cathy's, I was pleasantly surprised. They have a warehouse with a HUGE selection of old, broken vacuum cleaners that they use for spare parts. This means I didn't have to wait for a replacement part to come by mail, even for my fifteen year old model. They were able to tell me the final cost on the spot, and the repair was completed in just a couple days. The service man was friendly and all too glad to explain everything they'd do to the unit. He seemed to genuinely enjoy working with these, which made me confident that he'd be thorough. The service man didn't even try to push me on a new model, although they do sell vacuums there. It's not just a service place. In the end, I got the thing back on time at the promised price, they were good about calling to ensure I knew it was ready, and they even put a new bag in it. My review is based on a repair, which was a 5 star experience. Per the other reviews, check their return policy for purchases. If they still don't do returns, you may as well save a few bucks and buy the unit online. read more

I found service to be unacceptable. I went in to buy vacuum cleaner bags for my commercial vacuum. They didn't have them in stock but could order them. They would be here in a week. I called in a week and they said they weren't in yet. I called again 4 days later and was told they weren't ever ordered because they were having trouble finding them. What the heck? Would have been nice to have known that a week ago! read more

The service is good, and the staff are friendly and helpful. They have a wide range of machines with Janome being their top line. They have tables, sergers, etc, and carry a small amount of fabric etc. All around a night bright place to get sewing things. They sell high-end vacuum cleaners, e.g. Miele--which are amazing quiet machines, imho. They service professional machines too, e.g. Sanitaire. Like many small shops in Chico, they are not amenable to refunds should you want to return something. NOTE I've removed a recent negative review based on some unfortunate poor customer service. I did this since their overall customer service is good. Just don't ever try to get your money back. read more

So the first time I went there the service was horrible! I own and operate a cleaning business and need a new vacuum. I figured I'd give it a second chance, after all every one has bad days... big mistake. I walk in and the guy walks right by me closes the front door and says "if you need help just yell for me", and walked back to the front desk and stood there like an idiot! Ummmm... I'm looking at $900 vacuums and that's all you say?!! So I proceeded to wander around the store he keeps looking , but doesn't say anything until I got closer to him. Then he says still looking? I give him a eyebrow raise and walked out the door. I will never come back, nor will I refer people to their store. It is pretty bad that a store with so much potential sucks so bad!! read more

I have a Riccar Brilliance, and i love it. It is the best vacuum i have ever owned. I have purchased many cheap vacuums only to throw away within a year. Not my awesome Riccar! I also bought a fur piece to put around the bottom of my vacuum to protect my walls. Other than vacuums, i love their line of Ms. Meyers. Its all i clean with. It works great, smells even better, and its earth friendly! What else could you ask for? I also swear by the charlies soap. That's all i can use because i have sensitive skin. Once again its non-toxic & completely biodegradable. Anyways i would like everyone to click on Monti M.s other ratings. Looks like she dislikes everyone. Maybe a very bitter lady! She's "never going to best buy again" She had a face-lift and is unsatisfied with that. Doesnt like the way wagg in wheels washes her dog. Nor the receptionist at her long time doctor. I think she just needs a little happiness! I agree that some people may not like the return policy. Me i don't mind. If its past the allotted time i have no problem finding something else to buy. All in all im glad we have places in Chico that i remember going to as a kid. I remember the store on the esplanade across from the studio inn. I have been to Cathys many times and I am always impressed with the professionalism and service. I bought a Pfaff 130 here about a year ago and the younger lady and Thor where so kind. Every time I have had any issues with it I bring it in and Thor fixes it up, He makes it sew like butter ! I wouldn't buy or take a sewing machine anywhere else. They're unbelievably kind and knowledgable about machines . Also the prices are extremely fair. I really appreciated that when I bought my machine they gave me more than enough time to make sure I was running it correctly and also using the correct threads and materials. We got excellent service. We got a great over view on a canister vacuum for our travel trailer. The person helping us showed us every thing about a Riccar Canister. Did a demo for us in the store. Told us to check out the site on the internet for more info on the brand since we never had heard of it. The site was having a sale, so we called him to let him know the price was better than his. He honored the lower price and also had It delivered to our location which was an 1 1/5 hrs away. I would say that is excellent grade a service with out a doubt. Plus they will service our little machine if we have any problems. Don't need to send it away in hopes of getting it back. read more

I visited Cathy's for the first time to check out their fabric and sewing machines. They happened to be quite well stocked in the lines I like best, i.e. Kaffe Fasset, Amy Butler, etc. These fabrics are often difficult to find anywhere but online. But my greatest find was their voile line. Beautiful fabric colors and designs, so soft and silky- feeling. I bought enough fabric to make their pattern, Green Goddess. Very Bohemian and exotic. I predict a coming trend. They also had some Indian print that was a very pretty -gauzy fabric. The voile and Indian fabric was a bit costy but is also unique and much widerthan the standard width. So,somewhat limited but unique fabrics.. My only complaint was that when I asked to try out one of the Babylock machines, the sales associate was in a hurry, snarky and borderlline rude. They also carry a vast supply of vintage and antique sewing machines. I didn't have time to really browse (husband not as enchanted as I), but I plan on returning soon and spending some real time just drooling, and, of course buying some more lovely voile for my quilt backing. read more

He didn't pressure me whatsoever, he just gave me my options in my budget and explained the differences between each machine. Do not take your sewing machine (or vacuum cleaner) to be serviced here! I took my old machine in to be cleaned and serviced. While waiting at the counter, I listened to a very unsatisfied repair customer wailing about her experience with them. I should have taken her at her word. But I left my machine with them anyway. I waited 5 weeks, then had to call to find out status, The tech said he had called me, but that was not true. He then reported that parts of my machine were "seized" and he had been unable to unfreeze them, and there was nothing more that could be done unless I wanted him to spend a lot more time on it at their going rate. It was going to cost a lot. I decided against it and went to pick up my now worse-than-original-condition machine. They didn't charge me for the repair time, but kept my $25 deposit, and were very happy to show me some new machines. Before I took the plunge and bought a new one, I took my old one to Quilt n Thyme in Corning. They had it repaired, back in good working order a 3 days, and charged me $25 total. When I tell my story to other sewers, the response is,"We've heard that story before." Make your own conclusion to this. read more

This is the worse business that I have had to deal with ever. I bought a Brother sewing machine from them which included all the covers,cases and it came with a Dell laptop computer and software patterns. The sales lady did not tell me that it came with all the cases and did not give it to me at the time of the sale. She was nice and wanted the sale but did not want to deal with the follow up of the sale. I called several times to remind her that she was suppose to mail me the covers and cases that came with the sale. She finally sent me the covers and I had to call and ask about the laptop and the software. She said I will call you back that would not happen and it did not. I bought the machine back in Oct. and still to this day no computer. Wow great sevice right. Well the deal the sales lady made with me was for a cheaper price on the sewing machine she would get the computer and I would get the software. Well she never did file with Dell the computer person the paper work and there for the deal with dell was expired by the time she filed for it which she did not file another sales person had to clean up her screw up and she still does not have the computer which they are suppose to mail to me. I had to send dell the bar code and fill out a rebate form which I did and sent it out. Have not heard a word from them either. What a joke this whole thing has been. The second sales person sent me my software and the computer oh well I did my part and the rest is up to Cathys sew and vac. I can't say enough about the customer service I have received from this business. Dan (the owner) went more than above and beyond to insure that my Koala sewing cabinet that I purchased from Cathy's was set up and ready for me to sew. He personally came to my house, called the Koala dealer for installation troubleshooting, and spent more than 3 hours of his personal time making sure that I was set up and ready to go. This man is really committed to customer service. Right down to going out, purchasing extra needed items that the Koala dealer failed to mention were necessary, and coming back to install. I have purchased 3 sewing machines from Cathy's, one very expensive sewing cabinet and many accessories for sewing. I am always pleased by the attention to customer service and knowledge of products. Where do I start in singing the praises of this place? And how do I express in just a few words my appreciation of the quality of service I am given over and over? I clean professionally, so my Miele canister (of over 25 years) and Riccar upright get a LOT of use. More often than not, whatever issue my vacuums have is due to the heavy use they get, and they both just keep on working. Often the places we clean have their own vacuum cleaners, but we continue to use our own because they are simply the best!!! I have used sooooooo many different vacuums and they are quite simply junk. Whether I need vacuum cleaner bags, filters, a new belt or help unclogging a hose (which is always my fault), I am helped (almost always on the spot without needing to leave the machine) with courtesy, kindness, efficiency and skill......these guys know their stuff and I am a happy and (very) grateful customer. read more
