Heartstrings is a world class yarn store with neighborhood heart! I am a lifelong knitter (60+ now) and have lived all over - New York, Boston, Bangkok, Singapore - and Heartstrings has the range of yarn, tools and books that I find in the best stores in these large cities. Amazing yarn selection and knowledge. But being as it's in Chico it's low key you don't get the feeling of any pressure. I went in looking to find yarn to match some no-name homespun that I had and got exceptional advice on yardage, weight and fiber matches. I cannot say enough good about Heartstrings. They have a huge selection of fine yarns and knitting supplies, along with tons of fiber for spinning. The service was exceptional. I was made to feel very welcome, but not pressured at all. They also have a great little spot where my husband could sit and the kids could play, as I stopped with all of them while I was on a road trip. I was directed to the spot they keep the clearance yarns, and I checked it out, not expecting much. There were the usual clearance suspects, some crazy yarns that I'm sure someone out there loves (though not me). But there were also some amazing deals! Noro for 50% off?!! Yes please. I recommend this place. I've just started knitting and they have been very kind/helpful. I don't have much to compare to but for me they have been great. If you need help be patient because only one woman works at a time and can't help every one at once. They also have a lot of pay classes and free groups that meet in the back room. read more

I was in need of a particular yarn in a particular colorway, one of the yarns that is hand dyed so there were no dye lots. I hopped onto the internet, and Heartstrings Studio listed the desired yarn on their site, but the colors in the photo weren't quite what I was looking for.... I sent a question on a Tuesday evening, hoping to hear back from someone by the end of the week. I was very pleasantly surprised to get a photo of the perfect yarn sent the next day! I bought that yarn (plus another color on spec) and the yarn arrived today. The colors are exactly what I need for my project and I cannot be happier! These days with travel and in person shopping limited due to Covid 19, it is wonderful to find reliable service and products on the internet, as well as be able to support smaller businesses, even ones at the other end of the state from me! read more

Found this shop on yelp whilst wandering through Northern California on lots of little back roads. I'm from Los Angeles. I have access to yarn stores, but not like this. WOW! These folks have about twice the good yarn as most of the stores that I shop at, and a lovely variety of accessories, needles and spinning supplies as well. In talking to the three lovely ladies, I also scored a list of celiac-safe places for dinner tonight and breakfast tomorrow... Not only did I leave with a large bag of yummy yarn and roving, I left feeling like these ladies care about their customers...even new customers just passing through the area... read more

I learned to knit at Heartstrings when it was on Mangrove Ave. 2004 I think. I have loved it ever since. Joanne is so nice and all of her staff are so helpful. It's a beautiful store. Just a great selection and help when you need it. I just moved back to the area and I'm so glad to be near Heartstrings again. read more

I've been to all the knitting stores in Chico and the one in Paradise on the Skyway. This is by far my favorite. Excellent selection of yarns and the staff are very helpful. There's even places to sit and knit in the store. read more

I'm a beginner to knitting and only went to this store because it was across the street from my chiropractor. I happened to be planning on going to Michael's for some needles after my chiropractic appointment, so when I saw this place right across the street, I figured I'd save time and traffic stress by going here instead. I'm so happy I did because I bought some patterns and tools at a reasonable price and the lady who helped me (who I think was the owner) was unbelievably helpful without being the least bit pushy. There is drop-in knitting on Saturdays 2-4, apparently, so hopefully I'll be able to make some of those. Regardless, I will be back. read more

I am really disappointed in Heartstrings. I took a knit blanket in to be repaired in late October. Joanne said that it would be fixed by a "couple of weeks." Three weeks later, I called her to find out what the status was. She said that she would have it done by the following Monday and that she had had a headache the weekend prior and couldn't get to it. I called that Monday, and Joanne was busy and wouldn't be able to get it done until Tuesday. So over a month after I dropped it off, I got it back. I investigated it when I got home, and it really doesn't look like any stitching was done. It looks like she just took the ends and tied them together (something I could have done myself). I paid $20 for it, and there is still a sizable hole in the blanket. When I went to pick it up, I had to wait for 5 minutes while Joanne talked on the phone with a family member regarding personal issues. I would go back and demand that the job be redone, but I fear I wouldn't ever receive my blanket back. I am so disappointed! I will never go there again, nor will I ever recommend this business to anyone else. read more
