In short, I would recommend to AVOID using Master Tile & Carpet as they are dishonest and do not…read moreabide to their contracts. The following is a bit abridged since every detail won't fit. We used Master Tile and Carpet (MTC) in October to remove our old floor and replace it with a new tile floor. It was an absolute nightmare from the time we agreed to go with them until the day the job was finished. Some of the things that sold us on going with MTC initially were that Walter (owner) said if we moved our stove he could tile under the stove, he offered an "unconditional lifetime guarantee on his work" if we used tile from them but he also gave the option to use our own tile, they could finish the job before a mid-October deadline we had , and the price was fair and included multiple layers of flooring to remove. After we agreed to use them and put down the 50% deposit we found out every single one of these things would be an issue. When we first contacted Walter we were about 5-6 weeks out from the day we needed the work finished he said it would be no problem and there was plenty of time (many other places said they couldn't get it done in our timeline). A few days later we decided to use MTC and when I called to start the process the owner became unsure if the job could be done. After I gave him the choice of taking the job and finishing on time or I'd take my business elsewhere he all of a sudden became sure it could be done by then but couldn't give me the exact completion date over the phone. He said he would call me the next day (Wednesday) with date. He didn't call Wednesday, so Thursday afternoon (2 business days after we called him initially) we called to ask if he had a date he could finish the job so we could put down a deposit and get things started. He became agitated and told us that he wasn't sure yet, it was our fault we waited so long to get back to him, and that he would call us when he knew. Friday morning he called us with dates the work would be done so we put the deposit down later that day. The first thing my wife noticed on the contract was in bold print at the bottom "ONE YEAR LIMITED LIABILITY ON LABOR" which obviously is not lifetime. Unfortunately at this point we had already agreed to use their tile but had we known that initially we would have bought tile we liked more from Home Depot (and was cheaper) to use instead of paying for his higher priced tile for no added benefit. My wife told his daughter that Walter said it was a lifetime warranty on his work at which point the daughter apologized, said it was only a year, and said that Walter was getting "a bit senile". The contractors came to remove the flooring a week later, I was disappointed the contractors didn't seal off the doorways leading into the kitchen because sawdust ended up in my dining room, living room, and hallway rather than just being contained to the kitchen but other than that there were no other issues with removal. They used a circular saw to remove the flooring and just pried up all the old floor down to the subfloor. The next morning Walter walks up to our door with an updated contract in hand saying we owe him an extra $120 for an extra layer of flooring that was removed the day prior. Our contract said nothing about additional cost to remove layers, it was a flat price to "remove floor to subfloor". When this was pointed out Walter became very rude and started questioning my wife's intelligence. He then accused us of "tricking him" in to tiling under our stove when that area was always included in the square footage he charged us for. At that point realizing he didn't have a case, he shifted again and said that if we weren't going to pay him extra money for the additional layer of flooring removed that he would walk away from the job. He would return our deposit (minus the full cost of the floor removal that included the $120 more) and we could find someone else to finish the job. Basically he strong armed us for an extra $120 because he knew we needed the floor done by that weekend and he was going to be paid the extra $120 for removal anyway. Even the actual install was an issue because the owner didn't give the installer enough tiles to complete the job! We were short 7 tiles to finish the job.Walter actually tried to tell me he might only be able to get 5 tiles and we might need to use a different tile under the stove. I was fed up at that point and told him to finish the job; then an hour later he apparently just happened to get enough tiles to finish the job. When he came to drop off the tiles, he came in to see the job and actually had the audacity to say to me "this came out nice, come here and look at what I did for you here". He did nothing but give us issues and insults. At the end of the day, MTC is no cheaper than anywhere else and the owner seemingly tries to nickle and dime people so save yourself the massive headache and go elsewhere.
