You cannot go wrong with Casper's. Open from Labor Day to Memorial Day - Mon-Fri 10:30 - 3. If you go at lunch, expect a wait. Also, plan on sharing a table, if there's only 2 of you. A great way to meet new people. My favorite is a Super (fried egg, ham, cheese) with pickles on wheat toast....and a cup of chili with cheese. Casper's turns 100 years old this year!! Quonset Hut Cuisine. My experience with taking folks here generally results in them either loving the place or hating it. You can be elbow to elbow with patrons in the small quarters and the food is traditional Americana: chili, burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, etc. Inexpensive and served hot, this place is a wonderful greasy spoon. The decor is basically a little kitsch museum and the servers treat you like family (which is unsettling for some). I recommend the cheese burgers and the chili mac. read more

One of Springfield's best little spots. Been around for over 100 years for a reason. Some of the best chili I've ever had. Great food. Always great service. Is truly a gem. Just wish it was open all year. There's usually a line around the building at lunch time. Only open for lunch. I recommend the chili cheeseburgers, but just chili is always a good call. read more

Very disappointed. I had a coney dog. The chili on it was barely warm and flavorless. The hotdog was of low quality. I also had fried pickles that were really greasy. I had to go buy Rolaids immediately after eating there. The "decor" was interesting, though. I don't recommend this restaurant. It deserves one star but the service was good and the wait staff nice so I gave it two stars. read more

I tried to quit burgers but came here because it's an awesome looking building. Well I fell for it and come back every time. If not just for their amazing burger but at least for the random desert they have. Oh ya - make sure you bring cash or they'll kick you out and make you find an ATM. What else can they do? Great chili. I had an open faced burger that was supper filling. I came in with my family ten minutes before they closed. The serving and kitchen staff were there to work and promptly got our food out. I have been places where the staff gets mad at their tables or just gives bad service because they are more concerned about closing, I can say that wasn't the case here. Everyone was nice and the aesthetics were cool. It makes you feel like you take a step back in time to the 70s. The building in itself is a cool shape. It's small so privacy is kind of non-excitant. Caspers is a neat little place. Drawn to the place by other reviews. I had the Casperito. A tortilla filled with chili, cheese, sour cream lettuce and tomatoes. Very tasty. My coworker had a frito pie and a cheeseburger. The food was pretty good and the staff was great. Genuinely friendly, genuinely hippie. As we left, it looked like Jerry Garcia sweeping the floor! I LOVE this place. Its so quirky. The place is in a airplane hanger! Its super tiny, only seating around 35 people or so max. Usually, around lunchtime, there is always a line out the door. The wait isnt horrible, they are good getting people in and out. They do have community tables, if you go with a friend and sit at the big table, you will probably be sitting with strangers. You have to get the chili. Its greasy and so good! They are happy to top it with cheese and onion. Prices are pretty cheap. You can get out under 10 super easy. The staff is so nice! Most of them have been around forever! I am a regular and they are so nice to us! Oh, and the decor is so odd! Its full of old, weird art and I always seem to notice something new on the walls. Only open from 10:30-4 but delicious food. No menus, order from handwritten board on wall. No checks, just tell cashier what you ordered. No credit cards, cash only. No french fries, but small bowl of chili is a great accompaniment to a greasy cheeseburger. Delicious homemade desserts. Has about 9 stools at counter, 2 tables, and 3 or 4 booths. I have lived in the Springfield area all my life (almost 36 years) and i finally went to Caspers. I was not disappointed. I had the chili cheeseburger. It needed a little salt, but once you add some salt or a dab of their Arizona Gun Slinger sauce, it was perfect. I like to throw my fries in with my bites of the burger and the sauce. Epic. Caspers is a truly wonderful local experience! We had their cheeseburgers, single is plenty big - double had to be eaten with a fork (husband tried that!), but the real treasure is their fries! The flavoring is finger licking good. Although sketchy looking from the outside and a very tiny space inside , the colorful paint and unique decorating keeps you scanning the curved walls looking at an assortment of collected pictures and old posters. Hostess/server was an absolute gem! Super friendly and efficient! She even saved us some money by suggesting one order of fries - plenty big for our family of three!
