My husband and I stopped in at Cask and Vine this past Friday, May 24th 2013. We had been meaning to make it there for a while and were happy that we finally had an afternoon free from our 5 kids, did I mention I needed the wine. We headed right there, after of course the required "homework" on the place a.k.a. checking Yelp like the two technology addicted junkies we so pretend not to be. I was skeptical in all honesty, with the reviews being just so amazing. I thought for sure it was all the friends and family of the owners padding the results. (Sorry Andy and Alana I am forever the skeptic.)
Now for some history, I am a hardcore foodie, I am easily one of the most critical diners you can come across. My critiques do not rest at the food, I believe dining is an experience and the atmosphere and service lends to my dining experience so I examine those just as fervently as the food.
So with all of that being said, Cask and Vine is an amazing "hidden" gem in the middle of a long suffering downtown Derry. When businesses are struggling and moving on or out, Cask and Vine saw a unique opportunity to be an oasis for those who enjoy and desire great beer and wine, great ambiance and amazing dishes artfully crafted by Chef George Craft (Ha see what I did there?) that lend themselves to the menu perfectly.
Let's first talk location and ambiance. The location, smack dab in the middle of downtown Derry NH, is certainly convenient as it is only about 6 minutes from exit 4 off 93. Parking isn't terrible although I could see it being an issue on a Friday or Saturday night during the rush. But for a "date night" you really couldn't ask for a better pre/post dinner stroll a block or so to alternative parking areas. What the location might lack in curb appeal, located in a store front area, it certainly makes up for in low key sophisticated charm on the inside. The bar is beautiful, and the few tables and chairs are friendly and inviting. Next time I go I am absolutely staking my claim to the oversized sofa area, it's cozy allure was calling to me the entire time I was there. *Note to self, remember to see if reservations can be made for the sofa. *Note to others, definitely call and make reservations if you have a party of 4 or more. The staff is very accommodating and will make every effort to seat you quickly but for peak hours (Fri. & Sat) I would say reservations are an absolute must.
On to the food and wine. My husband and I both got a wonderful glass of woody merlot. I was told they rotate these offerings (as they do with the tap craft beers) so just ask the bartender what is recommended at the time of your visit and with whatever food you order. The staff from what I witnessed are extremely knowledgeable and very passionate about what they do, a rare and wonderfully refreshing combination. My husband ordered the cheese plate, I ordered a Chef special of fiddle head ferns and we split a crème brûlée. The cheese plate was just the right size for two people to share and taste everything but still small and light enough that you could polish it off on your own if you truly had to. I know such sacrifices must be made on occasion ;). Fiddle heads are my absolute favorite spring vegetable and it takes a deft hand and intimate knowledge to prepare them correctly. These were perfectly cooked. They were paired with goat cheese and a roasted red pepper puree, and the fiddle heads were sautéed in a beautiful brown butter sauce but this where my only critique comes in of our entire experience. The richness of the goat cheese, brown butter and silkiness of the red pepper puree was searching for just a small amount of acid or brininess (crisp prosciutto maybe?) to brighten it up, but otherwise perfection! The crème brûlée should have a review all to itself. My husband thought the sugar could be a bit more caramelized, but I don't think it needed it. I would love to see a lavender version on the menu for summer or early fall. My absolute favorite .
So in conclusion if you are within driving distance of Derry stop by Cask and Vine, you will absolutely not be disappointed. We plan on making this a regular stop and can't wait to share this find with all of our friends. And to Andy and Alana, thank you so much for giving us a great place to learn, love and live great wine and beer and experience Chef Craft's amazing menu. I look forward to visiting again and again. read more
